What's new

India [601/5] beat South Africa [275 & 189] by an innings and 137 runs in the 2nd Test, lead 2-0

This is why they say be careful what you wish for, you wanted normal tracks. This is what India does to teams on normal tracks dean.

India is 10x harder to beat on normal tracks lol. Teams should pray that India orders doctored pitch, otherwise they will have a sore bottom for months.

Saffers should thank their lucky stars they got rank turner's last time. On these wickets, they look absolutely toothless.

When india can easily murder opponents on these kind of tracks, Don't know why they prefer Turning tracks most of the time!

Spot on. Rank turners make it equally hard for both teams. Flat wickets with a bit of spin and India will make any team grovel.

Elgar into the attack.
I was waiting for Maharaja's double ton. :(

India should be the last team people should complain about in terms of pitches really. There's a reason India only lost 1 test in 7 years at home (which was, unsurprisingly, a rank turner).

Faf is such a whiny clown lol. Not that anybody respects that serial ball tamperer anyway.

To be fair he didn't whine a lot this time. He knows they aren't as good. Reality checks like the SL whitewash and the CWC humiliation have opened his eyes I suppose. Lol

I suppose so. He already lost all credibility long ago for various reasons, so keeping his mouth shut saved his dignity (whatever's left of it lol).

Elgar is the whiner-in-chief on this tour though he has always been a sook. He even sooked about his own test pitch, lol now beat that!

Indeed, poor Vihari.

Rahane, however humble and down to earth guy he might be, point is Vihari was in a better form than him. And Vihari is a handy bowler as well.

Wish we apply horses for courses policy for batsmen as well, no way should Rahane be a guaranteed starter on Indian pitches. He is the worst Indian batsman against spin I have seen, worse than Yuvi. Might be a nice bloke, humble, team man etc but to be a great team we need to be ruthless when it comes to team selection.

Unfortunate for jadeja, well played but would have loved to have seen another sword celebration.

Jadeja misses yet another test ton and he has missed a fair few.

Good declaration. Would've been selfish of Kohli to try and score his triple ton after Jadeja's wicket.

Approx 17 overs to be bowled by India till stumps, light permitting.

Should snare at least 2 wickets before stumps to make today as their day completely.

Kohli doesn't give a damn about any of those milestones, unlike many other great batsmen. Jadeja losing his wicket broke India's momentum so Kohli wouldn't bother batting with the lower order.

Kohli will garner a lot of ICC ranking points for this unbeaten knock....Will still be at least 20-25 points behind Smith.

I wouldn't want to be the therapist who has to fix maharaj after this. 514-6 in 127 overs look like career ending figures.

lol, he does and every batsman worth his salt does value test triple ton a lot.

Such considerations will come down significantly thanks to the WTC. Winning a match means more points and Kohli I think wants to finish the series off now and put Saffers under the pump. Triple centuries don't really help the team's cause.

Meh, he was clearly waiting for Jadeja's 100 before declaring. And he has declared just after his own 100 a couple of times in tests too

Kohli never plays for milestone, he always put team in front. Can u tell me the instances where he played selfishly???
He thinks he can captain an LoI side and does it for India, that's definitely selfish and it is costing us.

Iam only talking about his batting.
LoI captaincy is another issue, but he is best for test as far as Iam concerned.
Your post was when does he play selfishly, I think playing as a captain in LoI given his ineptitude is selfish. You said playing not batting, he is a fairly selfless batter.

Relentless. South Africans look scared, our spinners haven't even been introduced yet.

South Africa simply doesn't have enough talent, they're not very strong either mentally unlike Australia.

Easily the worst of SENA teams right now. Not a single world class batsman except Elgar and De Kock and toothless bowlers away from home.

That is very unlucky. Well something new for elgar to complain about I guess.

Indian Seam bowlers at Home Test Matches are severely underrated, absolutely severely! People blindly complain on Rank Turners for spinners, Flat Pitches for FTBs, magical switch over between Flatness/Turn based on who bats, etc! But they conveniently forget how brilliant the Indian Pace bowlers and how they are contributing in last decade or so! Visiting team's pace bowlers are absolutely rubbish compared to ours! This has been the difference between the sides most times!

Tbh, saffers are still strong enough to thrash us at our home in tests.

Kohli's missed a trick not giving ashwin a go today especially against Debruyn who he has got both times.

This SA team has totally regressed since Smith era - No wonder they lost a test series to Srilanka at home.

Clearly there are green patches on pitch and it offering good swing.
I just wonder how come duplesis picked two specialist spinners on this picth.
I think kohli took good decision by picking extra pace bowler and that paid well

Sri Lanka is a quality side, I think you forgot South Africa badly they thrashed us in tests.

They did and also India but they were on their last legs on both those tours there were signs that they were on the way down.

Couple of tests that SA won in India was due to their fast bowling on first day morning. Steyn bundled India out cheaply. This pitch is somewhat similar to that. Not a 600 pitch. Their. Seamers should have done a much better job. Ball just zips through for pacers.

KOHLI LEADS RECORD-BREAKING DAY FOR INDIA WITH THE BAT

Friday, 11 October 2019

VIRAT KOHLI led a record-breaking day for India as they piled up the runs on day two of the second Freedom Series Test against the Standard Bank Proteas at Pune on Friday and, then, in a repeat of the first match, got rid of three of the visitors’ top order before the close of play.

The Proteas closed the day on 36/3 from the 15 overs that were possible before time was called in response to India’s mammoth total of 601/5 declared.

Kohli set the standard for the day, both in terms of his stroke play and his running between the wickets, to score his seventh Test double century and, by the time he made his declaration, he had reached a career best 254 not out (336 balls, 33 fours and 2 sixes) and also made the highest individual score by an Indian Test captain.

When he reached his individual double century, he also reached the landmark of 7 000 Test runs and was involved in two record partnerships for India in Test matches against South Africa.

These were the 178 he put on for the fourth wicket with Ajinkya Rahane (59 off 168 balls, 8 fours) and the 225 he put on for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (91 off 104 balls, 8 fours and 2 sixes).

Kohli delayed his declaration in an attempt to let Jadeja reach his century but the batsman holed out on the boundary attempting to get there quickly.

India lifted their run rate to score 245 runs in their final session of batting as the South African attack came under the pump.

Kagiso Rabada was not able to add to his three wickets from the first day while the two left-arm spinners conceded nearly 300 runs between them.

SA have ruined their own cricket team by enforcing quota system forcefully.

not true. They are just not producing quality white players. Apart from bavuma every other player deserved his spot. Rabada, ngidi, philander, mahraj etc.

Bavuma is a good player of spin hence he was picked. S.africs just don't have good enough batsmen. Malan is trash. zubair hamza is too raw. de bruyn is average but somehow he got picked.
van der dussen is an odi player. Not great in tests.

Just nor good enough.

Virat Kohli's seventh Test double hundred powered India to a mammoth first innings total of 601/5 declared, before seamers struck thrice to pile on further misery for South Africa on day two of the second Test in Pune.

The Indian skipper marched on from his overnight score of 63*, combining with his deputy Ajinkya Rahane in a 178-run stand for the fourth wicket, before the latter was caught behind off Keshav Maharaj when on 59, to give the left-arm spinner his 100th Test scalp. The visitors had to wait for another 39.1 overs for their next wicket, and not before Kohli brought up his highest Test score of 254* and joined forces with Ravindra Jadeja for a stroke-filled 225-run stand for the fifth wicket.

Jadeja eventually skied one off Senuran Muthusamy, falling nine short of a well-deserved century, with his dismissal prompting the declaration. His innings included eight hits to the fence and two over it, but his brilliance was overshadowed on a day when Kohli showed his immense appetite for runs and the art of batsmanship, yet again. The second ranked batsman in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Rankings hit 33 fours and two sixes during his 336-ball stay, and completed 7000 Test runs in only his 138th Test innings while he was at it.

He has now crossed the 21000-run mark across all international formats in a staggering 435 innings and so becoming the fastest to the mark, surpassing yesteryear legends Sachin Tendulkar and Brain Lara who took 473 and 485 innings respectively.

It was a repeat from the first Test in Visakhapatnam for the visitors, as Maharaj and Muthusamy, their lead spinners, appeared below par yet again, conceding 196 and 97 respectively to earn a wicket each. Muthusamy had Kohli caught in the slips by skipper Faf du Plessis when the former was on 208, only for the replays to suggest that he had overstepped – not for the first time in an innings which included 11 no-balls.

Openers Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar, who walked in to bat with 15 overs remaining before the end of day's play, were back in the hut by the fourth over to leave South Africa reeling at 13/2. Umesh Yadav, who had played his last Test against Australia in December 2018, struck on his second ball, trapping Markram leg-before. He then had Elgar, previous game's centurion dragging one onto his stumps for 6.

Shami then carried on from where he had left off in Vizag, striking with his first ball to have Temba Bavuma caught behind for eight, by virtue of a review. Theunis de Bruyn and night watchman Anrich Nortje ensured that there were no more setbacks, as South Africa ended the day at 36/3, still trailing India by 565.
