What's new

India close Day 3 at 215/2 trailing England by 139 runs with Cheteshwar Pujara unbeaten on 91

Been a while since Kohli scored a century.

Now would be a good time.

Pujara the most patient man in the game. Love it!

Kohli must put on a sturdy, patient innings too if india are to even have a whiff of a draw.

Wicket will come and India has a long tail.

What this innings underscores is that it wasn't a wrong decision to bat first on Wednesday, all India had to do was survive two sessions and not throw their bats around like it was a white ball game.

That batting effort on Day 1 was monumentally worse than the 36 all out debacle at Adelaide.

25 overs faced by Pujara, hopefully he can face another 30+ overs here..

Lol Anderson already bowled 19 overs out of 68.. Loving it..

He was off the field having a massage and when Kohli came in, he strode onto the field like some hero. Couple of glorious fours later, he calmed down and went to the boundary line to nurse his ego :vk2

England lost the plot Day 2 last session and morning Day 3

India right back in this unless England don’t pick up a couple of wickets urgently

That's stumps. It's 99* partnership between these 2, well batted so far.

If we can put England out to pasture for the whole day tmrw, it would be a great moral victory for us, regardless of the actual outcome :inti

I fear 1 wicket tomorrow will bring a flurry. Rahane and Pant aren't the most reliable batsmen at the best of times also. But good resilience shown today.

Tomorrow will be the end of this test match. The question is can India save the follow-on?

Yeah I know that. I have no faith in Rahane. None at all . But one can hope

India is a dangerous team on flat wickets. Perhaps the best batting team in the world when the pitch has nothing for the bowlers. The moment the pitch eased the batsmen have come into their own

Still wondering why England didn't try to bat longer.. Once they got enough lead they were trying to score fast I believe..

With such a long Indian tail, Eng may not have to even bat again if the new ball gets quick wickets.

Pitch is fairly benign but conditions were helpful and the bowling was mostly high class. Anderson was off-colour by his lofty standards and gave a few down leg, but still got the ball to swing as usual. Rohit was majestic the way he handled him and Pujara later too.

Some of the best batting from the Indians that I've seen for a while not because they survived and scored but because it was top-quality stuff.

You've been so good for us in Australia series and last Lord test.. Hopefully you'll be right (wrong) once again.. Actually seeing your post increased my hope ;-) :p

India's batting effort is same as first innings. Same amount of edges flew in first innings as well. It is just that in this innings, edges are not going to fielders. Normally high percentages of edges don't go to fielders.
But when they go, team gets bundled out cheaply. Same thing happened in Adelaide and same here at Leeds.
India haven't improved their batting or England have not bowled worse. Same thing - just a matter of serendipity.

I really enjoyed today. Thought it was high-class Test cricket from Rohit, Virat, and Pujara in particular. Overton and Robinson also bowled exceptionally well for England. The Indian batting was fantastic.

Tomorrow morning will be huge with the second new ball available. A fascinating fourth day in this ebbing & flowing series awaits!

India is showing good fight here by scoring well in the second innings. Most likely England will have to bat again chasing an uncomfortable score. Even if England win India has come back in to the game for sure. Then again two more wickets and the cat will be among the pigeons:faf

India ended day three at Headingley on 215/2 after crucial knocks from Cheteshwar Pujara (91*), Virat Kohli (45*) and Rohit Sharma (59); trailing England by 139 runs.

England resumed the proceedings on Day 3 at 423/8. They started confidently with Craig Overton smashing Mohammad Shami for back-to-back fours in the first over of the day. However, the bowler had the last laugh as he trapped Overton in front in his next over for 32. The last-wicket pair of Ollie Robinson and James Anderson failed to inflict further damage and Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the former to wrap up England's innings on 432; the hosts securing a massive lead of 354 runs.

India needed a patient start and their openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave them just that. Both Anderson and Robinson tested the India openers, drawing edges, forcing them to play forward. Rahul was given out lbw in the 10th over off Robinson but Rohit urged his partner to take a review, which resulted in Rahul getting a reprieve on 6.

The England bowlers continued with their attacking approach and while the India openers managed to survive for most of the session, things unravelled towards the end as Overton got Rahul in the final over before lunch, thanks to a terrific one-handed catch diving to his left by Jonny Bairstow in the slips.

The second session proved extremely vital for the visitors. Shrugging off Rahul's loss before lunch, Rohit paired with Cheteshwar Pujara to put up a defensive display, frustrating the England bowlers. The India opener survived a lbw review on 35 but managed to hang on. He also brought up a hard-working half-century, his second-wicket stand with Pujara also crossing fifty. Anderson and co kept bowling tighter lines and lengths but the duo survived, strengthening their hold on the match, scoring 78 runs in the session without losing a wicket.

The hosts had the perfect start to the final session as Rohit Sharma was adjudged lbw off the bowling of Ollie Robinson. Sharma reviewed the call and the replays showed that the ball was just touching the stumps, as England celebrated a massive wicket.

Pujara though continued building up his innings, looking fluent while bringing up his half-century. He was joined by skipper Kohli and the pair looked assured at the crease, displaying their best form in the series so far, taking their partnership over the fifty run mark.

With the light quickly fading, the umpires called time on the day with India's score at 215/2, trailing England by 139 runs. Pujara will resume day four at 91* with Kohli on 45*.

Well, I am just commenting based on the base rate of the outcome. Indian wins in Aus and Lords were incredible. Does not happen often. How many times a team putting 70 odd runs and 350 behind can come back? Probably not even 1 out of 100 times. If a team somehow does it then hats off to them.

Only a team like India can get all out at 36 or 78, and then make a comeback like this against a great team like England. Very hard to dislike these Indians as I have been trying for a long time, but they are just not allowing me to.

If we can overhaul this remaining lead without losing a single wicket then probably we can save this test. For that, Kohli has to score a real biggie like he used to do in his heydays.

No one can beat westindies. They can chase 400 runs in test and get allout in one session

Against all logic, a tiny voice in my head says it is possible to save this test
