India end Day 1 of the 1st Test against South Africa on a comfortable 272/3

well played mayank-well made 60.
good start.
Amazed at the negativity shown in the comments above.
the obvious wanting to see us fail apart, i think namma banglore hulugas have done a terrific job.
Hope fully one out of che pu, jinks or vk fire and go big, else at least the first two can hang up their test boots.
even as i type che pu is out, this is sure to bring the site locals out in droves...

Strange. Initial ball tracking was showing half ball hitting the leg stump.
The later one showing ball clearly hitting leg stump.

This is what happens when the DRS operators on payroll are left back home :))

P.s is kohli trying to mimick labu and Steven smiths cringy NOO RUN!

But how the hell that ball tracking show three red ,looks suspicious

FHh-_tmUYAEXonE

Ngidi to Mayank, out Lbw!! South Africa review for LBW: It hasn't been given. This one seams back in sharply from a back of a length on off, Mayank hops and tries to work it away, misses the inside edge, struck on the pads and that looks like it's going down leg-side. NO, it's been given out! Ball tracking shows that it's crashing into the top of leg-stump, but it certainly looked like umpire's call to the naked eye (on ball tracking, IYKWIM). India aren't too happy about this, but Mayank has to go! Mayank lbw b Ngidi 60(123) [4s-9]

I think india play pujara and rahane in the XI to give opposition teams a better chance and ensure a good contest

Trash remains trash. It's insane to expect any runs from Pujara and Rahane.

But how the hell that ball tracking show three red ,looks suspicious

No way it was going to hit the stump.
Either missing or at best clipping leg stump to keep Umpire's call. Mayank was also not happy with ball tracking.

The initial ball tracking was showing half ball only clipping leg stump but displayed 3 reds on graphics to overturn on filed call.
Later ball tracking also showing full ball hitting the stump. Very suspicious to me.
But it is what it is at the end.

Sorry for being late and didn't got the chance to laugh at Pujara :))

Hope Rahane fails too :23:

Rahul is the most versatile cricketer in the game since ABD.

The thing that worries me most is we are an aging team with almost no replacements for 95 pc of the guys who are > 30. look at rohit, che pu, jinks, vk, shami, ash, ishant, jads, mayank, kl ...where r the replacements, no young batsmen < 25 other than gill (hopefully Washi sundar morphs into a regular opener, he got the goods, his bowling is a bonus), no young bowlers other than siraj.
in 3 years time come 2025 - if our setup is not wise enough, we will be languishing at the bottom in tc, odi and t20 cricket. somehow our setup has to get more talent thru the systems. whilst at it stop hyping the IPL , yeah it has given some good cricketers, but we have to focus more on long form of the the game. Else get back to overseas defeats and being thorougly outclassed a la early 2010's

Good session for India again, 350 in 1st inns would be a very good total from here.

This stroke alone shows how far past Kohli is from those lofty heights which he once scaled.

India's most pathetic test batsman (someone who played 70+ tests) ever comes to crease.

Earlier when Kohli used to get dismissed, he would get furious with himself. Now he just gets dejected from another flop show with bat and walks back to pavilion with his head bowed down.

This stroke alone shows how far past Kohli is from those lofty heights which he once scaled.

I agree he is not gonaa touch those scales ever.
But i dont agree with that shot thing
Because i have seen him for years
He has this nag of edging and playing strokes and giving catch practice to fielders.
Infact in his peak age in 2018 he almost gave 5 6 catches in england thats the secondary thing they dropped those chances but i have plenty of examples where i can prove you that these shots doesnt show how past kohli is from those lofty heights. Only difference is that time luck was by his side but right now luck is not by his side which is making things more worse.

Worst part is that Kohli doesn't look
too bothered with these consistent supply of flop shows, at least not from the outside as he is someone who used to wear his emotions up his sleeve.

You can't attribute his 600 runs in that England series coming due to him being lucky.

Rahane gets another freebie from Ngidi, his second boundary.

Another freebie for Rahane from Maharaj. SA looks hell bent on keeping Rahane in Indian XI.

Game in the balance here. Add 2 wickets to the score and it’s all looking pretty even, but India are in control of things currently.

Reason why rahane is playing good innings here

Ajinkya Rahane in Boxing Day Tests

Total : 515 Runs, Avg : 85.83

The winner of the inaugural Mullagh Medal award lol :))

Hundred in England and RSA in same calender year. Looks like golden era of Indian batting is on the way.

really good inns by Rahul, left the ball well, good in defence and has put bad balls away today. India should be aiming for 300/3 at close here.

Excellent from KL. 7 Test hundreds in 42 tests.

He has centuries now in Australia, South Africa, England, India, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Simply sensational from KL Rahul as he brings up his seventh Test century 🔥

What a knock from the opener!

Another 150 more runs and its Game, Set, Nail, Hammer, Coffin for South Africa in this test match...

The wicket is quickening up, you do not want to be facing Bumrah here on a late day 2 onwards..

Worst part is that Kohli doesn't look
too bothered with these consistent supply of flop shows, at least not from the outside as he is someone who used to wear his emotions up his sleeve.

Kohli has become arrogant over time. He is done , does not have any intent any more.

100 runs in this session for Kohli's wicket, couldn't have asked for more.

Kohli has become arrogant over time. He is done , does not have any intent any more.
He has always been arrogant but the problem for him during last 2 years is that he isn't scoring that surefeit of runs he used to for past few years so this arrogance is putting us all off.

Besides, as you said intent isn't there. He is living on his past laurels and is making the team just because he is the captain.

Why have SA not given India the same wickets they gave to Pakistan in 2019?

Day 1 to India.... Fabulous 100 by Lokesh Rahul.. considering weather forecast India should aim to post Big score in 1st inning..

Why have SA not given India the same wickets they gave to Pakistan in 2019?

Look at bowling attack of India and South Africa...Indian pacers will roll over African batting in no time on green mamba...Batting wickets will be their best bet to salvage some pride in this series

Rahul's ton makes it India's day in Centurion

KL Rahul scored the seventh century of his Test career as India started off brilliantly in the Centurion Test, ending day one on 272/3.

SCORECARD

Calling correct at the toss, Indian skipper Virat Kohli chose to bat first in overcast conditions on a pitch that had a tinge of green on it. But it proved to be the right call as openers KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal showed a great amount of discipline, especially in the first 30 minutes.

They were especially cautious against Kagiso Rabada, playing out his spell by leaving most of the deliveries. Once the ball started getting older, they opened up the blade, playing some lovely shots and driving brilliantly. Agarwal was the aggressor while Rahul was a bit more watchful.

The scorecard started ticking as South African skipper Dean Elgar started to rotate his bowlers in search of a breakthrough. Debutant Marco Jansen did carve out an opening, getting a ball to move away and bounce from a full length which caught the edge off Agarwal's bat. Quinton de Kock though, could not hold on to the catch as it proved to be a major reprieve for India.

The visitors clearly end up winning the session, scoring 83 runs in 28 overs without losing a single wicket as it was a job well done from the Indian openers.

Agarwal continued in the same vein in the afternoon session, bringing up a brilliant half-century, the sixth of his career. The partnership between the opening pair also crossed the 100-run mark as the hosts were in dire need of some inspiration.

They got exactly that from Lungi Ngidi, who was bowling a much more disciplined line and length in the afternoon session. Shattering Agarwal's pad, the initial decision was a not out from the umpire. But it turned out to be a brilliant review from Elgar as the replays showed all three red lines, as the opener walked back to the pavilion for 60.

The very next delivery brought the scalp of Cheteshwar Pujara as the ball moved back in just enough as the No.3 inside-edged it onto his pads and then into the grateful hands of Keegan Petersen. With the double-strike, there was a visible shift in the momentum of the game as India now had to rebuild again.

Rahul continued in his merry ways, playing some breathtaking strokes as he brought up a classy half-century. But the onus was on him to convert it into a big one as he was joined by skipper Kohli at the crease.

The pair saw through some challenging South African bowling for the remainder of the session, heading into tea at 157/2.

It was a positive start for India in the final session with KL Rahul continuing to look serene while Kohli was also growing in confidence. But Kohli's frustrating search for a big score continued as he perished against Ngidi after a phase of consistent bowling by the Proteas. Ngidi pushed the delivery full and wide and Kohli couldn't resist having a dart at it, edging it to walk back for 35.

Ajinkya Rahane joined Rahul at the crease and was looking in good nick, playing some brilliant shots dealing exclusively in boundaries at the start. Meanwhile, Rahul was closing in on what would be a brilliant ton away from home.

Rahul reached the landmark against Keshav Maharaj to bring up his seventh century as his resurrection as an opener in the Test arena continued.

The pair would see through the remainder of the session with Rahul unbeaten on 122 and Rahane (40*) to make put the visitors in charge. South Africa will now hope for some early breakthroughs at the start of day two to claw back into the contest.

Impressive first day from India.

They have put down a marker in the series.

A lesson on how to bat away from home in Tests.

The England team in Australia should all be made to watch the full first day of this match on DVD in their hotel rooms — they might just learn something.

Rahane needs to make a big 100 here.

Brilliant day one batting by India. The weather and pitch flattened out, the bowlers haven't looked that good but India were assured, batted to a plan, left the bad ones, put away the good ones. Expecting 300 as a minimum and as I predicted, a win!

or India's tour last year (except Adelaide lol)

SA didn't bowl that well here

I was disappointed with the SA bowling, particularly in home conditions. Aside from a bit of Ngidi, it all seemed quite toothless.

Good solid show by India. Great innings from KL to shut the critics. India need to put a big score now to get SA under the mat. SA bowling looked faltered . Deliveries were not good in line and length. Jansen seemed under pressure as well. May be he would learn . Seemed SA missed Olivier here.

yes Rabada seemed down on pace and in general they didnt attack stumps enough

I did tell you guys that he isnt anywhere near the bowler and hasn't been ever since the Aussie tampering scandal. Looks short of energy and bowls defensive lengths which statistically give the illusion of succes but are highly misleading.

why would that scandal affect him?

I think he's taking too much pressure after retirements of Steyn,Morkel and Philander.

I am not sure but I sensed a loss of oomph straight after the series. This isn't to say he isn't a solid bowler but the zip has gone l.

I noticed it during the 2019 World Cup in England, he just wasn't quite as nippy as he was previously. There was an impression that he wasn't hitting the bat hard.

His biggest problem is the defensive lengths which give statistically respectability but don't actually do real damage . It's the type thing Broad and Anderson do outside England. Simple solution bowl full on off stump and encourage the drive, more runs will be conceeded but it will create opportunities.

True. For some reason Rabada just seems tired & lacks intensity these days. Is he carrying some sort of niggle?

Rabada has played a lot of Cricket for SA since 2015. Even though he is still young but the workload has taken a toll on his pace, zip, bounce. Let's also not forget, he has mostly been a bouncy track bully.

Let's also not forget the fact that he no longer has the likes of Steyn, Philander, O Livier, Morkel to help create sustainable pressure. It's a totally different beast having to shoulder the burden of the entire bowling line up yourself.

I don't think he is. I just think he has lost confidence and because of that he looks tired. You would think he will get back to his best but I am not so sure.

But he isnt creating chances with skill, the less you beat the bat both on the inside and outside, the less chances you create.

India's strong opening day show may have put South Africa on the backfoot in the first Test but the home side pacer Lungi Ngidi on Sunday said they still can turn the match around if they can bowl the tourists out under 350. Vice-captain KL Rahul slammed an unbeaten 122, while his opening partner Mayank Agarwal struck a resolute 123-ball 60 as India rode on the duo's century-plus opening stand to end day one on 272/3.

"It's Test cricket, you win sessions, you lose sessions. All in all, it's been a good day of cricket. There's still a lot on that wicket. Things can happen quickly," the 25-year-old said at the press conference after the day's proceedings.

Ngidi's 41st over double strike in successive balls pulled things back a bit for South Africa.

"If you get two wickets in two balls, that means anything can happen. And if we can get a couple of breakthroughs early in the morning that could turn the game on its head.

"Still the balls catching the edge, going towards the slips... It would be great if we can keep them under 340-350." Ngidi was the only wicket-taker for South Africa on the day, returning with 3/45 in 17 overs and also became the only bowler to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara on golden duck twice in Tests.

As the rest of the Protea attack lacked control, Ngidi was also struggling but change of ends did the trick for him.

"I asked at lunch if I could switch ends, but obviously, everyone prefers their certain end so I had to wait my turn.

"I was just struggling from the other side a little bit and finding the right areas, but once I came this side I felt comfortable and all of a sudden, things started happening for me," he said.

He said the home side bowlers were a little disappointed with the wicket as it lacked swing.

"The wicket did less than we thought it was gonna do. And they (Indians) had good disciplines, they left well.

"I expected a bit more swing and when that didn't happen, you obviously got to change your plans and trying to get the ball to move off the deck and that was happening on both ends. The gameplan was to try and attack the stumps, and the pads."

India opener Mayank Agarwal on Sunday said his side’s batters applied themselves as per the team plan, putting the visitors in a strong position on the opening day of the first Test against South Africa here. Opting to bat, India scored 272 for 3 at close of play with KL Rahul remaining not out on 122. His opening partner Agarwal contributed 60 while Ajinkya Rahane, who was struggling for form, also returned unconquered on 40.

“The plan was to be very disciplined, to play balls which come around the stump and leave as many as possible. We could do just that," Agarwal said at the press conference after the day’s play . “At 272 for 3, it is credit to our batting unit, we applied ourselves. The plan is those who get set will have to continue and Rahul bhai did that."

Apart from KL Rahul’s century, the highlight of the day was the partnerships India had. “The highlight as a team was Rahul getting a hundred. We had partnerships and that was crucial. He had a partnership first up with me, and Virat bhai had it also and then with Rahane. I hope they continue the same."

He said the Indian team did a lot of pre-match practice sessions at the ground and also the centre wicket to have a feel of the situation and the conditions.

Asked what would be the ideal total India would be looking for, he said, “We want to score as many as we can to place ourselves in a very good position. The first hour (tomorrow) will be crucial. If we do well in that period, we can pile pressure (on South Africans).

“There was a bit of moisture early on and we could see some balls skidding but it got better as day progressed and got quicker."

On new coach Rahul Dravid’s impact on the team, Mayank, who has worked closely with the former India captain, said, “The conversation of the players with him was about playing with discipline.

“When you play in South Africa and other countries, it is not necessary to look good (to win matches). You have to stick to plan and wait for opportunities. We are glad that we could do that in the first session."

He refused to comment on his dismissal following a DRS call for LBW.

“I am not allowed to give my opinion and so I want to leave it at that. Otherwise, I will be in bad books and my money (match fee) could be docked."

Mayank felt Rahul was very disciplined in his game plan and in his mindset.

“If someone is really watching him closely you will know that he (Rahul) knows where his off-stump is, he is really getting to the line of the ball, he is leaving balls really well and he is very disciplined in his game plan and in his mindset."

Indian dominated entire day for following reasons.

1) Openers - left ball well. Solid in defence and played straight. Also didnt play any over expansive drives, just checked drives or punch shots.

2) Concentration and patience - indias batsmen on the whole were happy to occupy crease, no concern about dot balls and put away the boundary balls.

2) SA bowled both sides of the wicket and just gifted at least 1 scoring bad ball an over so no pressure on batsmen at any point during day. nor did bowlers seem to have any plans for the batsmen.

3) SA didnt bowl well as a unit. Apart from Ngidi, no one was prepared to make batsmen work for their runs. bowlers need to apply pressure in pairs and it didnt happen.

The match is likely to be a draw due to rain taking out at least a full day and some more.
