Both India and New Zealand will head into the second and final Test of the series in Mumbai fancying their chances after a nail-biting draw in the first Test in Kanpur.

India vs New Zealand, second Test
Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai
December 3-7, 9:30 am local

After narrowly missing out on a victory in Kanpur, the Indian team will welcome back their talismanic skipper Virat Kohli for the second Test. His return will also bring about some selection dilemmas after the excellent performance of Shreyas Iyer in his debut Test. With Iyer's showing likely having cemented his place in the middle-order, one of the stalwarts of the Indian batting lineup for the past few years, Ajinkya Rahane or Cheteshwar Pujara are likely to miss out owing to their overall performances over the last couple of years. Ishant Sharma could also miss out after being ineffective in the Kanpur Test and may be replaced by Mohammed Siraj on a Wankhede pitch which will likely offer some assistance for the seamers.

New Zealand again showcased all their character and grit which has made them such a formidable side across all the formats. They will be largely happy with their showing in Kanpur and won't make many changes for the encounter in Mumbai. One change likely though is the inclusion of pacer Neil Wagner in place of spinner Will Somerville who was toothless with the ball in Kanpur. The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium will be much more conducive to pace bowling and Wagner will make for an excellent inclusion.

Remember the last time

India batted first and posted a score of 345 on the board courtesy of an excellent century by Shreyas Iyer and vital contributions from Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Axar Patel's fifth five-for then ensured that the visitors were bowled out for 296 to ensure that the hosts had a crucial first-innings lead heading into the second innings.

India were in a spot of bother losing half their side with the lead of only around 100. But Iyer and Ashwin steadied the ship with crucial knocks before Saha and Patel further piled on the runs as India set New Zealand a target of 284 runs heading into the final day.

For the large part, it seemed as the match was headed for a draw but Jadeja and Ashwin ensured that we had a nail-biting last hour on our hands. Ajaz Patel and Rachin Ravindra though showed great determination, batting our 52 deliveries before fading lights finally brought an end to proceedings and New Zealand clinched a deserved draw with one wicket remaining.

What they said

Paras Mhambrey (India bowling coach): "We will have a look at the wicket, then we will see what combination is right: three spinners and two seamers or two spinners and three seamers. Depending on that we will decide the playing XI. But everybody in the group believes whoever is part of the team is good enough to represent the country."

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): "For us, having that experience, going out, batsmen spending time in the middle and bowlers getting overs under their belt after a fairly disjointed preparation was really valuable. For us, it is really important that we make adjustments quickly again. We go to a new venue, and it will be different."

Wagner is the kind of guy who will find a way to get some wickets on any pitch. Bringing him in would be a good move. Last test was so close he honestly might have made a difference for NZ if picked.

Williamson ruled out of second Test | Latham to lead

BLACKCAPS captain Kane Williamson will miss the second and final Test against India in Mumbai as he continues to battle the left-elbow injury which has troubled him for much of 2021.

Coach Gary Stead confirmed the injury had flared-up during the first Test in Kanpur and with it failing to improve in the days following the match - the call was made to rule the captain out.

“It’s been a really tough time for Kane having to deal with such a persistent injury,” Stead said.

“While we’ve been able to manage the injury through the year and the T20 World Cup, the shift to Test cricket and the increased batting loading has re-aggravated his elbow.

“Ultimately the injury is still not right and while he got through the Kanpur Test, it was clear playing in the second Test wasn’t an option.

“We all know how much he loves playing and leading this team, particularly in Test cricket, so it’s a very difficult decision to sit out.

“It’s been a challenging year for Kane trying to manage his elbow and it’s important we now formulate a good plan with him to ensure the injury does not continue to plague him.

“He will likely require a sustained period of rest followed by rehabilitation, strengthening and gradual batting loading.”

Williamson has been dealing with the tendon injury since it first emerged in the New Zealand home summer.

Tom Latham will lead the side in Williamson’s place with the final playing XI to be confirmed at the toss, which has been delayed due to a wet outfield at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Yes, could buy proper covers, and the super sopper etc.
But bit hard to change drainage of an existing ground + these are unseasonal downpour for mumbai.

India has long batting today , Kiwis cannot afford to waste new ball , they need early wickets otherwise they are in for long day 1 and 2

Looks like its going to be a drawn series! That itself is great achievement for Kiwis because nobody seems to have done it of late... But I guess they would have preferred to draw it by 1-1... Australia & England managed to win 1 test when they visited last time!

Seems like human error during stumping review against Mayank.
Front on vision and frames used during ultra edge looked different to me.
Not sure though.
Anyway he didn't nicked in both cases.

Does any other country use the strategy of "niggling" as effectively as India often does? The strategy of mysteriously injuring players when you need to drop them but can't:shakib

Remember when Vijay Shankar was niggled with an injury during net practice in the ODI world cup:misbah

For some players in Indian cricket, injury is the new coverup for the drop

Jayant Yadav again plays a test out of nowhere.

And this after earning a reprieve on the previous ball when Blundell couldn't gather the ball properly and missed the stumping.

If ever the proof was needed to boot out this pre historic age dinosaur from Indian team here it is.

This is the reason why our batting has gone to dogs under Kohli. He just can't boot out the non performers as he himself is in dire form.

So all those carefully leaked videos of Kohli practising at Brabourne stadium count for nothing!

Looked simultaneous.

Correct decision with the umpires decision standing.

Kohli complaining isn't surprising.

Most ducks scored as Test captain
13 Stephen Fleming
10 Graeme Smith
10 Virat Kohli*
8 Atherton/ Cronje/ Dhoni

India losing 3 top/middle order wickets in 2 overs to Ajaz Patel. Who would have thought we would see this day!
Unfortunate that there is almost a simultaneous decline/loss of form for Pujara, Kohli and Rahane over the last 2-3 years.

Kohli was not out...he is hard done by umpires there. But obviously now 'Indian Umpires are incompetent' thread wont be bumped.

Third umpire decision seems correct to me. He didn't have enough evidence to overturn on-field decision.
However no doubt Virender Sharma is a poor umpire. The guy gets under pressure easily.
Forgot to check even ball tracking.

Reckon Kohli was a bit unlucky to be given out. Tough to overrule on field decision because of the 'inconclusive' clause, but still looked like inside edge first.

This should shut mouths of those who say Indian umpires are biased.

Ajaz Patel in his last 8 overs - 8-7-2-3.

And now Mayank audaciously hits him for 6 & 4 off consecutive deliveries.

From CI,

Sravan gets cheeky: "With the customary hurdle of top order out of the way, the Indian middle and lower order can now focus on their regular job of scoring runs. "

lol, so true.

Pujara should be dropped permanently after this series! Because "home tests" was his stronger suit! (Scoring daddy hundreds) As far as blunting balls in overseas conditions - even Vihari can do that. Even Washington Sunder can be a handy player for India in tests...

Rahane perhaps may get a last chance in South Africa. If he can't perform there (as he has reputation about overseas batting!) against an all time weak South African team even he should go out of this team...

No harm will be done to India Test team if this happens (Pujara & Rahane going away) as it can only bring positivity to the team like what happened after 4-0 drubbings against Australia & England under Dhoni!

Good thing when Gill or Iyer batting is the score card keeps updating unlike Pujara and Rahane.

NZ are a top side but still didnt expect them to fight so well in India. Winning a toss would have really helped them cause serious trouble for India

NZ looks pretty weak without Kane Williamson and Trent Boult. :inti

Yes only a World XI (best players at best form and best fitness) can only play against India in India. OR perhaps 33 players should be allowed in the team. Maybe Toss choice to be given to the opposition and even 3rd batting innings for them! OR rather home tests should be banned completely in India!

Mayank is probably the best player of spin bowling in the Subcontinent (Root being the best in the world) but he'll be sidelined when Rahul and Rohit return. That too for the washed up duo of Pujara and Kohli. Absolutely heartbreaking...

Even a blind man can see there was a inside edge but no worry we still can post competitive score .
