What's new

India has now a better W/L ratio in ODI cricket compared to Pakistan

Pakistan has been a fantastic odi side for nearly 3 decades, started going downwards since 2011 wc. Even in early to mid 2000 they had a gun line up.

11-0 in WC the biggest event.

PAK gave INDIA a HUGE PHAINTA in the one and only ICC 50 OVERS FINAL between the 2 sides. Most of India wins in WC are really meaningless like for example 92 and 99. India had no role in those 2 while PAK reached the finals...:hasan2:shhh

Much Like India beat Pakistan in in the B&H Finals 1985, back when Pakistan has it's 'Lion' Imran Khan in the team, and we were borderline minnows :D

BTW, India vs Pak matches in WC is all about pride and prestige. It's pretty much irrelevant what both the 2 teams do after their matches against each other are done. But the memories, and humiliations :)) are remembered forever.

Anyways, Pakistan's superior record in head to head encounters in numerous meaningless ODI matches against India are of utmost importance. But India's victories against Pakistan in WC tournaments hold little value :))

Enjoy it while you can. India's golden era is now, ours was in 80's/90's. All that means is we're due another soon and will overtake you again :P

Yup, we will be a football crazy nation within 20 year's just like we are crazy about hockey and then cricket.

Hahaha if there would be any match b/w India and Pakistan in these WC would be out in group stage forgot about final.
We are now better team than you as we have better W/L ratio and it will only increase from here. Sorry you are now 2nd best team of Asia in cricket and always remember 11-0 , it's shows how good we perform against you at the biggest stage and not on those meaningless bilateral.

Not happening. India’s success in cricket and other fields is all due to the economy. Pakistan’s downfall in cricket and other fields also due to the economy which has been suffering post 01.

When there is more money it gets funneled into systems. India is growing at 7-8% on a larger base while Pakistan is growing at 3-4%. If anything the gap will widen.

As an Indian fan it just feels so satisfying having the best bowling line up in the world. Best fast bowler, best spinning duo, couldn't have asked anything more.

That team was not borderline minnows and for a 2-3 year period, one of the best teams in the world. Various political reasons led to demise of that era. Someone like MMHS can give you the history.

On topic, both teams have pathetic historical records.

At least Kohli understands that India needs to be dominant to be par.

Well deserved.

But, seeing the recent new crop of upcoming cricketers of Pak I am sure if managed well these guys can also perform really well in coming few years.

Our time will come again inshAllah. :pmik

With booming economy and billion plus highly competitive people you have no chance. It's our time and our century. We are getting better in not only in cricket but everything be it sports, tech, research etc.
While Pakistan facing lot of economy and education related problem.

No, it isn't.

If economy was to decide the cricket eras WI of 80s and Aussies of 2000s would never have happened. Further you are talking about things which are not related and you dont know a lot about by the looks of it.

Not surprising. India has two world cups and is humiliating teams abroad. The next gen is waiting in the wings and will be even more dominant and ruthless. Kudos to BCCI for a strong structure and pipeline.

Last two years have been awful as a Pak fan and it hurts even more when rivals keep getting better and better.

Having a billion people is a burden at the same time. Why do Indians think that we will always remain like this ? if you turned it around, we will too, infact we are already on that path and once we sort our systems out, believe me, you won't be able to catch us. So enjoy your victories while you can.

Good stuff but it is long overdue.

I can only wonder had Pakistan continued to invest well in talent in the 80s and 90s and created a proper system like what India has now, it would have rivalled ATG teams now.

Not unlike the Windies of 80s it chose to squander it with lack of vision at the top.

Boss the ruthlessness of the corporates have made an impact where every player is certain of getting the boot of they do not perform at the highest level..

Talent stocks can dry up regardless of the state of the economy. India excelling in all sports can be good and bad both, future generations will have other options. Look at Australia right now, billion dollar tv rights deal but is no longer producing quality batsmen

Ruthlessness or corporates if are going to be effective, they can only be effective when there is talent which India has at the moment. If you would have tried these strategies to the 90s Indian team with toothless bowling it would have produced no rewards as there was no talent to work with.

You really do write a load of tosh don't you?

Pakistan are and never should be our benchmark.. We should try and beat Australia's WL record in coming years.. we should aim to be the best and hopefully in coming decade we can reach beat Aussie WL.

Surprised it took India 2019 to overtake Pakistan. Pakistan has been terrible for 15 years in ODIs.

A meaningless stat.

Aim must be to become a force in test cricket

It does help massively. Australia have always been a sporting nation with world class facility so no surprise they dominated 2000s

WI dominated 80s because cricket was still not as professional back then and the WI had superb athletes who honed their skills in county cricket/Sheffield shield. So did Pakistan for a matter of fact, ever since counties put restriction on foreign players countries like WI and even Pakistan stopped producing world class players because they don't have a competitive domestic structure . WI do good in World T20s because their players play T20 leagues around the world.

In today's day and age a proper domestic structure is needed which BCCI was able to build credit where credit is due to Manmohan singh who changed the economy in 1991. If it wasn't for him or his team who came up with the idea we would have been in a massive mess. It takes years and even decade for the changes to start effecting the society.. After 27 years what we are seeing is a problem of plenty where we have enough decent options coming through..

The next generations would be even better as Indians have still not tapped their real potential, sports is still not a viable career choice and cricket structure hasn't reached villages . Also a lot of poverty and malnutrition is there in society still so will take another decade or two for India to reach the max potential.

Pakistan 73 - 54 India :sendoff

In a decade this stat won't be brought up by us anymore :))

Kudos to the Indians, even though we started off with better players they actually knew how to properly nurture their talent, plus having a better economy does help the sport in the country.

I wish people counted those points instead of posting one off statements.

India were minnows in 1985? They had won the world in '83 and were comfortably the best team in the 1985 WCC, so no they weren't minnows, in fact they were probably the best ODI team at the time. Regarding Imran, he was still early unto his comeback, So his bowling wasn't up to its usually big standard.

The fact that India were so good during that period, makes Pakistan's domination over them that much more impressive especially considering the modern gulf in class between the two countries.

Name any underdeveloped nation which is better than developed nation in sports?
Aus with a small population is good in every sports because they have resources to spend on individual player to make them as good as any talented player.
When you don't have money for food you can't expect improvement in sports bcz it needs lot of money.

Great but the present day situation for Pakistan is different and not only cricket but even in field hockey you had the upper hand but look at where Pakistan hockey is at the current moment plus having played squash for so many years it is painful to see that the game too is finished in Pakistan 🇵🇰...

THey are a far better side than Pakistan so it is not surprising they have overtaken us.

Lets hope we can learn from their example and try to improve.

Yes you can but sadly Pakistan condition are getting worse. Your literacy rate fall from 60% to 56, you are put into grey list. Also your export are reducing with Inc in imports.
No major sports happening in country. Less exposure.
Your economy is growing 3-4 % which is very low. Even Bangladesh will be larger economy than Pakistan in 10 years.
India is progressing hell lot faster than Pakistan in every field and gap will be widened in near future.

My last sentence mentioned the current chasm between them. I don't follow hockey, but I am aware that both India and Pakistan are no longer major players in hockey.

Yup agreed but India population is too large. If we split population for 5 sports than it's 30 crore people for each sports . So lack of talent will not hurt India. But im sure that in near future football will be major sports in India just like hockey used to be once.

This year. They already have higher per capita income.

This is the unfortunate truth for us Pakistanis. Quicker we learn from our Indian brothers and replicate their hard work the better.

Up till now cricket got the best talents . Most kids even if they loved other sports switched to cricket due to lack of options. That may change cos even kabaddi players earn well these days . In the cities there is hardly space to play cricket . I don’t see one kid playing cricket in my building .

So no more arguments about being "historically" better. :vk

Congratulations. Especially for the great effort you made to come on here on a Pakistani forum to enlighten us.

Lot of us appreciate good cricket, I certainly do and have praised ICT a lot recent weeks. But wind ups like you make it really difficult.

It’s plain economics . There’s just more money for everything than we had 20 years back . Our generation is better off financially than our parents and most of them don’t see engineering or medicine as the only career option for their kids .

In test , Pakistan has a better W/L.

I suspect, India may catch up in the next 5-7 years. Kohli's team tries to win lots of tests rather than simply winning 1-0 series like earlier Indians teams.

It is really hard for you guys. Hell even, internally it is really hard for one state indians to catch other state indian. For example, Nobody can match the IT sector of south indians even in india. same goes with gujarati communities business minded can not be matched by south indians or others. It is not competition but diversity which india has is amazing. It was just an example for thought.

Can you post W/L list of the ten teams?

This!

Modern sports are not really sports, they are industries. The players are professionals, and the managers are professionals. For India there is no going back to the 1990s when the nepotism of Raj Singh Dungarpur ruled the day. Indian cricket will keep getting better and there will be ten more Bumrahs, Shaws and Agarwals ready to break into the team.

Thanks.

This is sad. The no. 1 ranked team in terms of W/L is rated by some in PP behind Australia, India, West Indies, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, i.e, at no. 6 position.

There is some stat about World Cups in there I'm sure....

Benson & Hedges World Championship of Cricket 1985 was an ICC 50 overs final, it was the CT of that era. India beat Pakistan in the group stage and then the final comfortably with 8 wickets to spare.

Will be interesting if we remove teams like Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Ireland, Netherlands, Kenya etc from the filter. Zimbabwe was decent for a while and Bangladesh is good now, but for majority time period they were punching bags for everyone.

I don't care about W/L, only WCs matter as far as I am concerned. SA with such an impressive W/L have never made a WC final while Aussies have won 5 WCs, I know which record I will take.

Enjoy it while you can. India's golden era is now, ours was in 80's/90's. All that means is we're due another soon and will overtake you again :P

Pakistan never had any golden era actually. They were a mercurial team always. Exceptionally brilliant on their good but atrocious on bad days. No consistency what so ever.

What did they achieve in 80's/90's except 1 world cup? Lost every single world cup game against India, couldnt even qualify for finals in the home WC (96), never became no.1 test team, never won a test series in Aust, no Champions trophy. Yes they did win loads of Coca Cola cups in Sharjah though but that hardly counts as golden era.

Other the other hand India won 1 WT20, 1 WC, 1CT, undisputed no.1 test team, series wins in Aust etc. in their so called golden era.

Their were only 4 teams with proper golden era:

West Indies (70's-80s)
Australia (1999-2008)
South Africa (2008- 2012)
India (2012 - now)

#FACT

Considering the 8 major teams and their record against each other, this is what we get. The teams are: Aus, SA, Eng, NZ, Ind, Pak, SL, WI. Sorry but Bangladesh and Zimbabwe have been extremely poor for most parts.

stats.jpg

Very interesting, only Aus and SA have positive W/L. Shows how much they have dominated the other big teams especially the 5 time world champions. By the end of the WC or latest by year end I expect Ind and Eng to join them by posting more wins than losses.

A couple of more for you to share with your Grandkids

We also beat India in Bangalore in 1987 to win the 5th Test match and the series. How can you forget to mention that and the special ODI victory where Miandad hit Chetan Sharma for a last ball six.

The one that hurts most is 1999 Chennai test.

Whether the Pakistan team achieved what they should have needs a whole other thread. There's just too many others factors such as fixing, infighting etc to discuss here. Just break it down to looking at the players and it definitely was a golden period for Pakistani talent and a very barren one for India. The tables have obviously completely turned and in the context of Ind vs Pak i'm sure they'll turn again in the future.

Mostly correct. Pakistan was briefly ranked #1 in Tests towards the end of the 80s.

This is just wishful thinking. The reason India is better now is the culture has changed. This "golden era" of India will not end.

If Pakistan wants another "golden era", it will have to end its sifarish nepotism culture. There are no signs that is happening right now.

:))

Losing to Pak in the final, SA and England test and beating the weakest Aus team in history is a golden era?

India have played 50+ more matches in this time and have just edged ahead by a fraction.

I have no doubt in a decade Pakistan will be ahead again because Indians produce a decent bowler once in a blue moon.

Well done !!

I only know what I know about ICT from what I read on here so I might be wrong but it sounds like you guys have invested heavily and are the Man City/Chelsea of Cricket and it is finally paying off.

I don’t like that method because it stops being competitive, the games boring and filled with plastic fans but at the same time I do think we need some money invested into our game, can you imagine the force we would be - us, the more naturally gifted getting backed financially.

Good post. Agree with you that Pakistan has wasted top years of some very talented players.

They are like Cleveland Cavaliers of NBA who get one of the best player ever "Lebron James" and yet only has 1 championship to show for it

“The bigger they are, the harder they fall”. Every upward curve is always followed by a downward one soon after. There are only 2 questions: 1. Has India got a higher ceiling or have they reached the highest level of improvement. 2. How soon would be “soon”.

I for one believe this is the highest level and India would now go towards a downwards spiral even though they may end up winning the world cup, the rot would start this year.

Exactly! Out of those 11 victories, how many resulted in Pakistan being knocked out or India winning the WC? Its even funnier because in those 11, they also count the 92 victory :))) And they have the nerve to talk about 'meaningful' victories.

96 WC you got knocked out in QF
2003 WC you got knocked out in group stage itself
2007 : The T20 WC Final ... did you forget that??
2011: You got knocked out in SF
2014: T20 got knocked out in group stage itself
2016: T20 got knocked out in group stage itself

You have been knocked and spanked by India so often in ICC tournaments that your memory has gone fuzzy :))

Surprise the gap is still not huge we can be back to top .

On the contrary pakistan have better w/L ratio than india in test the format alot of indian fans care since india become number 1 in test.

India had been mediocre for like 50 years of cricket. Overall stats will not change in a few years. The rate of change is pretty promising though. Don't worry, King Kohli is setting all the wrong stats right in his reign.

You can keep wishing, but the reality is different. The current Indian team is not a fluke. It is the result of a domestic cricket system that identifies and nurtures talent. There are batsmen like Agarwal, Pant and Gill waiting for their turn. We need a couple more bowlers like Bumrah and it will happen soon. You can keep waiting for the "rot" to start.

Mediocre? Mediocre teams do not get to the #1 ranking. India was ranked #1 in Tests no less than 45 years ago!

And won the WC 35 years ago :)
