What a surprise.

Being 6’6 tall as a fast-medium bowler seems to be more important than pace or swing or seam.

Kohli illustrated it perfectly. So taken up with working out whether to go forward or back to a ball leaping up from a full length that he fenced outside off-stump at it.

You seriously think that is a wicket taking delivery lol CDG was the most threatening of al lthe bowler.
 
Pretty embarrassing stuff from India so far. An iron fist over every aspect of cricketing infrastructure and yet being massively undone by a kid on debut. Minnow nation tbh, the 80's/90's weren't that long ago and if it wasn't for Sachin maybe they wouldn't be a test playing team right now.

I think it’s the perfect delivery with a Kookaburra ball in Australia, NZ or South Africa after the first hour.

Bowl balls like that over after over and the opposition can’t score and start playing risky shots.

Kohli made the error of playing it: if you leave ball after ball there a tall quick ends up with a McGrath-like spell of 6-3-8-0.

And that’s how you win Tests in SENA.

You are digging own hole here - there are 40 wickets to be taken, 7 pacers and 3 of them are 6+, may be Southee as well. Do you want people to call you here every time Shami, Bumrah, Boult, Southee gets wicket?

It’s skill first - both from bowler & batsman. Kohli played a poor shot; he would have been out even if the bowler was 5’6” with that shot; and he would have survived had he not chased a ball on 12th stick, even had the bowler been 8’6”
 
A score of 250 is good to achieve, if they do.
Memories of the 2003 NZ tour, with greenest and seaming pitches that I have ever seen, are getting fresh.

If it were pujara that would have been left alone. Kohli always goes after that channel anywhere in the world.

yea man so true. weak team. Should tour away from.home. It's embarrassing. All the money in the world too. BCCI often donates to school system to develop players. Infact bcci has raised the GDP of india. Now india has a higher GDP than SENA nations and still so useless. Have to learn from PCB. They are the true inspiration for these pathetic indians.
 
Shaw dismissal kinda expected as he is still developing his defensive game. Pujara got a pearler. But Kohli threw his wicket away.
 
So far i have not seen any ball crossing 135k from any bowler if i am right. That too only 5 or 6 balls. Mostly between 125k and 133k. Allowing the ball to swing.

I intensely dislike Junaids' obsession with height-centric arguments, but just want to point out that Southee is almost as tall as Ian Bishop (easily 6ft +) and Boult is almost as tall as Wasim Akram of today (probably 6ft + as well).

Yes, I agree.

In the 1980’s you would never have dismissed a Top Six batsman from one of the worlds top five teams by making the ball bounce either from a full length or short.

But white ball cricket has damaged red ball batting techniques so badly (viz Shaw, Kohli and probably Pant later) that tall gunbarrel straight fast-medium quicks have replaced shorter, more skilful ones.

Remember - Lillee and Imran were 6’0 tall. And yet in 2020 Pattinson is kept out of the Australia team because he is only 6’1 whereas the three selected guys are 6’6, 6’5 and 6’4.

I don’t like it, but I recognise it! And that’s why I think that tall quicks are priceless in the current climate.
 
220 would be a good score.

India would be happy with that session. Probably expected worse after losing the toss.
 
In the first session Pujara receieved the highest number of wicket taking deliveries. Anyone else would have gotten out if they had faced this many good deliveries. He eventaully succumbed to it.

Actually no.

Southee is tall - he’s 6’4 - but he only bowls at around 125-130K so he can be a liability at times.

But Boult is slightly under 5’11, and that’s why he sometimes loses control of the scoring rate. He’s by far the most skilled Kiwi bowler, but can bleed runs fast like Waqar used to.
 
Honours even - both side is one wicket behind the comfort zone. Kiwis will need India 7 down by Tea to have an advantage, otherwise India will cross 250 and take lead of day 1.

That's why I find Junaids' arguments so ridiculous and I agree with MMHS on that particular comment.

Just pointing out that Southee and Boult aren't as short as some people initially expect them to be.

That's why I said balance wise n.z has the superior balance for n.z conditions however in terms of individual players, India are better. india has vihari who can give the bowlers rest. That's why I said a pandya or vijay shankar would have been handy for n.z conditions at number 7.
 
I liked the discipline of Agarwal. I was waiting for several brain fade shots. He restrained himself a lot. Stil went after a couple of balls. But never looked out of place. He stood outside the crease negotiate the swing of everyone.
 
n.z has cdg who I still believe is average but for n.z conditons he is perfect.
boult southee jamieson. southee can bat. jamieson isn't too bad either at batting.

ajaz I don't know about.

Should have picked Daryl Mitchell over Ajaz because he can bat. mistake in my opinion.

Looked quite mediocre from what I saw in the ODIs and the last 20 mins of this session that I did watch.
 
NZ attack of Boult, Wagner, Jameison would be hard to handle across all conditions. CDG as 4th seamer/arounder just to keep it tight for 10-12 overs a day & rotate the quicks.

Nope he never looked out of place. He hardly edged anything to three slips. Didn't get beaten a lot. May be 1 or 2 ball. He is a complusive stroke player. So that was a good session for him. Not sure what he will do from here. But he negotiated the toughest period better.
 
wonder if jamieson would have been effective in australia. Not saying n.z could have won but the match would have been closer. kyle though, the jury is still.out. He may have the novelty factor.

I only saw the last 20 mins of the first session and he could have been out twice.

All conditions is a big stretch. You need pace. Apart from boult nobody is touching even 135 that often. Jamieson hardly goes above 130k. He will be treated like dirt in Australia where there won't be any movement on the offer.

His height would have definitely helped. He wouldn't have turned the game but the defeats would have been smaller.

nope he is the real deal. possibly best opener in the world. he battered Australian pace attack in australia off the couch.

Those were not edges. He sliced it. You could call it poor shot selection. But nothing to do with him getting beaten or anything.

He hits the deck hard and gets the ball to jag because of his height. Definitely would have been decent in Aus.

He had no control of those shots and was fortunate to not have been out. Really ordinary batsmen from what I've seen.

yes but you also lost cause you were batting last in both games. Wonder if n.z could have won should they have batted first.

he played and took apart a better Australian bowling attack before. He has serious upside.

At the moment CDG is being picked as allrounder- they believe his batting is valuable enough to influence a game. As an allrounder he keeps it very tight as 3rd/4th seamer. Is economy rate is the best in the world this past year. That's allowing control.

He was also picking regular wickets vs England & Oz in their recent tests. Enough to justify his role as 4th seamer /allrounder certainly.

He doesn't look much, I agree but he's looking a test standard player to me. Not a star, but he's doing his bit. -just- above the bits-n-pieces useless level & into "handy" test player level. His batting is at 37 & his bowling is at 31... That's acceptable for a Test allrounder.

Sure you hope you have a Chris Cairns but if you don't- this guys numbers are better than a Shane Watson.
 
CDG bowled the best length for this pitch. Jamieson was erratic.Probably that erratic nature got him two wickets. Boult towards the end looked better. Southee used the crease well. Overall a decent unit to exploit the condition.

And Shaw is too raw, will have to sort out his footwork, which I am sure he will. Pujara got a beauty. And hope these two continue as long as they can.

On second viewing of SHaw's dismissal ball did move a bit of the pitch. He did cover the line. But it missed the bat just enough.
 
Would have been one of the greatest catch of all time. Almost took it with an inch above the ground
