Shastri backs India’s pace trio to shine in England

Speaking on The ICC Review, former head coach Ravi Shastri discussed India’s pace attack for the marquee Test series in England.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes India’s fit-again pace trio will cause problems for the England batters in the five-match series starting in June.

The series will mark the beginning of the new ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, with India heading into it on the back of white-ball success with their Champions Trophy triumph.

However, their Test side will be eager to bounce back following a disappointing outing in their previous assignment in Australia – a 3-1 series loss in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy that eliminated their hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship Final at Lord’s.

One of India’s struggles in that series was the availability of their pace attack – both Mohammad Shami and Jasprit Bumrah have battled injury setbacks, while Mohammed Siraj struggled in the Border-Gavaskar series and was dropped from their ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad.

Siraj has since made a strong comeback in the ongoing IPL, claiming 12 wickets in eight matches so far, signalling he’s back to his best, while both Bumrah and Shami have recovered from their injuries.

Shastri, speaking in The ICC Review, believes the trio will play a key role in England.

“I think with Siraj, Jasprit and Mohammed Shami, these three, if they are fully fit, they will give England heaps of problems,” Shastri said.

“It's a quality, top-class pace attack when you get these three fit. And what I like about Siraj, I'm glad he was hurt after being put out, not in the side for the Champions Trophy. That's what you want.

“For him to go back to the drawing board and come back the way he has, there's a spring in his stride, the pace is up there, and he means business game after game. And that is perfect from India's point of view with England coming up.”

Bumrah, too, appears to have regained his rhythm in the IPL after the injury that sidelined him during the final match of the Border-Gavaskar series, which subsequently ruled him out of the Champions Trophy.

Shastri did, however, emphasise the need for India to manage Bumrah’s workload during the tour of England.

“I would be very, very careful [with Bumrah],” Shastri added. “I would give him two Test matches at a time and then wait for the break.

“Ideally, make him play four. You'll be tempted to make him play five if he starts off in a great manner, but it's how his body pulls up.

“He should be given the first opportunity to say, ‘Yes, a little, [I am] feeling the niggle. A break would help.’ Give him that break.”

Shami made his return to international cricket for India only in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy, following a long stint on the sidelines since the 2023 Cricket World Cup Final due to a knee injury.

His absence was particularly noticeable during the Border-Gavaskar series, where India struggled without a second senior pacer to share the workload with Bumrah.

In fact, Shami has not featured in red-ball cricket for India since the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final against Australia.

“You'll have to see how he's bowling in the nets, but I think there's enough experience there for him to start off,” Shastri said on Shami.

“The fact that he puts his hand up and says, ‘I'm available for that first Test match’ means he knows his fitness levels.

“He's a workhorse. I've known Shami for a long time. If he puts his mind to it, he'll get there. And the fact that there's Siraj and there's Jasprit doing as well as they are, that is just the motivation he needs to step up and get to that level.”

England and India will clash in the first of five Tests at Headingley in Leeds from 20 June, with subsequent Tests taking place in Edgbaston, Lord’s, Old Trafford and The Oval.

Prasidh Krishna has really impressed me. Should be considered for the tour.

Shastri urges India to shake things up with surprise picks for England Test series

Cricket legend Ravi Shastri has made the call for a left-field selection in India’s squad for the five-Test tour of England.

Former coach Ravi Shastri has called for the inclusion of Sai Sudharsan in India’s squad for the fast-approaching five-match Test series in England.

After the 3-1 series loss in Australia at the start of the year, which put paid to India’s hopes of qualifying for the ICC World Test Championship Final, there were calls for the inclusion of fresh faces in the red-ball set up to reinvigorate the side ahead of the high-profile Test tour of England.

Speaking with host Sanjana Ganesan on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Shastri threw his support behind Sudharsan following the 23-year-old’s standout form in the ongoing IPL 2025.

Already capped in white-ball cricket, Sudharsan is yet to debut in Tests, but Shastri sees him as a future all-format player for India.

“I see this young man, Sai Sudharsan, for all formats of the game,” Shastri told The ICC Review.

“He seems like a class player and my eyes would be on him certainly.”

Sudharsan brings valuable experience in English conditions, having turned out for Surrey in the County Championship in 2023 and 2024. In five matches he scored 281 runs, including a century and a fifty.

In 29 first-class matches overall, he has 1957 runs at an average of 39.93, including a maiden double-century in the format in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season for Tamil Nadu against Delhi in October 2024.

“Being a left-hander in England, knowing English conditions, and just his technique, the way he plays, I think he'll be top of the list for me from the outsiders wanting to get into this side,” added Shastri.

Shastri also wants to see a left-arm pacer in the squad for the seam-friendly conditions expected in England, and pointed out Arshdeep Singh as someone who could fit the bill and shouldn’t be restricted to white-ball cricket.

“I'll be looking for a left-armer,” he said. “I'll be keeping an eye on which left-armer is in good form, and try and squeeze him in there as the sixth (bowling) option.

“It could be anyone. It could even be a white-ball specialist. I don't like this thing when they say someone like Arshdeep Singh is a ‘white-ball specialist’.

“I'll keep a close eye on his red-ball record as well and the number of overs he bowls. If he can bowl 15-20 overs for me, he might very well be in the mix because he's got the mindset. He's a thinking bowler and I need a left-armer. It's just that.

“You need a left-armer, go and find him, whoever it is and whoever is the best of the lot – pick them. There's Khaleel Ahmed, who again, his rhythm is good, he's bowling well. So it's important to get that mix.”

Both Arshdeep and Khaleel have previously featured in India’s limited-overs squads, but neither has made their Test debut yet.

Arshdeep has shown promise in red-ball cricket, claiming 66 wickets in 21 first-class matches. His recent stint with Kent in the 2024 County Championship, where he picked up 13 wickets in five games, added valuable exposure to English conditions.

Khaleel, with 52 wickets in 19 first-class matches, has also been on the selectors' radar. He was part of the Australia tour, initially with India A and later as a travelling reserve for the Border-Gavaskar series, though a niggle cut his time short.

Among the other batting options, Shastri floated the idea of Shreyas Iyer returning to the Test setup, especially after his inclusion in India’s latest central contract list.

Iyer has impressed in sub-continental conditions, scoring 736 runs in 11 Tests across India and Bangladesh at an average of 43.29.

However, opportunities outside Asia have been limited, and he’s yet to make a mark, managing just 75 runs in three matches, with appearances in South Africa and a solitary outing in England.

“He (Shreyas Iyer) can (make a comeback), but it's again going to be a competition,” Shastri noted. “White-ball, certain. Test cricket, we’ve got to see who the other players are around.”

England will host India for a five-Test series – the first of the next cycle of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 – starting with the first Test in Edgbaston, Birmingham on 20 June.

No leadership role for Jasprit Bumrah on England tour

India’s fast bowling figurehead and vice captain Jasprit Bumrah is unlikely to be given a leadership role on the Test tour to England starting June-end, sources in the BCCI told The Indian Express.

The ace seamer had led India to its sole win on the Australia tour at the turn of the year, apart from leading in two other Tests. But since Bumrah is unlikely to feature in all the five Tests in England as part of his workload management, the selectors are likely to seek a player who will play through the tour.

“We want a player who will be available for all five Test matches and he should be given the vice-captain’s role. Bumrah won’t be playing all five matches, so we don’t want to appoint different deputies for different games. It will be better that the captain and vice-captain should be certain and play all five Tests,” the sources said.

It’s also learnt that the selectors want a young face, who could be groomed as a future leader, as vice-captain. From the nucleus of the current team, only two fit the category, Shubman Gill (25) and Rishabh Pant (27). Most of the other regulars, Virat Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja and K L Rahul, are in their 30s while Yashasvi Jaiswal is seen as too young at 23.

He can score and dependable.shami is done bro. He was atrocious while bowling for srh. He needs another 6 months for test matches.

No Nitish. We need proper 4 Pacers and nitish is not a test class pace allrounder.

I think England's strength is their batting and they will likely utilize it instead of making a bowler-friendly track.

Am not happy with Easwaran selection as he cant even buy a run on offside. It's a waste of spot.overall it's a good selection. I hope youngsters like jaiswal, sai, jurel proves themselves. Irrespective of series drubbing we will receive, series will help us to figure out future playes .its a 5 test series , so no way to escape or fluke.a good step in right direction at last with out rohit and kohli.

Should have picked Rana and possibly Kuldeep Sen

Made one mistake there

But otherwise yes overall happy

Better selections definitely

Gone are the days of Anderson, Broad, and Archer. I was watching the Test match against Zimbabwe, and this current English bowling attack looks rather pedestrian. Their batting is still strong, but not quite at the level it was a few years ago.

India, on the other hand, will be without deadwoods like Rohit, Kohli, Pujara, and Rahane. For the first time in years, they'll be fielding a young team packed with talent and selected based on domestic performance.

Given the circumstances, I believe India should win the upcoming Test series against England—and anything less would be a disappointment.

Discuss.

And
Shreyas iyer in place of eswaran would have been good.
I am sorry no

Shreyas can’t play bounce whatsoever

I would pick someone more skilled with good shot making ability

I would have picked tilak varma or badoni

They have very good stats and have shot making ability

Kuldeep sen is no where to be seen.not sure what's happening with him.As per previous reports in aus, rana is huffing and puffing by 3rd spell in a day.so he was asked to increase his test match fitness.

I guess bumrah will play 3 matches.rest all of them have fill in for 5 matches.if our pacers are ridiculous on those flat tracks, it's better to have Kuldeep in place of a pacer where there won't be much of assistance after first morning

Should be an entertaining series between two average teams. England would greatly boost their chances if they drop Stokes but that won’t happen obviously.

I think English bowling is looking very weak, both in pace and spin dept. If India don't win this time in England, they should be disappointed. You agree?

England is playing at home so they are Big favourite. If india won more than one test than I'll be surprised . 4-1 or 3-1 to England. :kp

Anyway im backing India to win, however because devad annoys me to death, I will fan boy England just so I can watch him squirm some more.

Its my speciality and what I've been doing since my inception

You forgot to tag me, the Travis head of this forumn

Brother you are expert in Australian cricket and hence didnt tag you. Remember our fights during BGT and how I refused to accept the eventual series result which favoured Australia thanks to umpires?

But what would i miss an opportunity to torment Indians?

Jokes aside I do wish to support India cause unlike others who lie about being neutral fans

I think India are better prepared and England is going down the drain but why would I miss the opportunity to torment Indians?

Root has the opportunity to edge closer to Sachin's record.

Infact although I want aus to smack em in ashes i do want root to achieve 14K runs this year and Steve smith to achieve 11K runs.

Wishing bumrah the best though. Always enjoy watching him bowl.

This is the best bowling attack we have taken to England ever.

It just sucks that this is also on paper the most untested and unproven test batting attack we have ever taken to England.

So our success will heavily depend on the ability of our bowling attack to get England out at sub 200 scores at a consistent level during the series. If not then it would take a surprisingly good batting effort from this young team to win matches for us.

Should be an entertaining series between two average teams. England would greatly boost their chances if they drop Stokes but that won’t happen obviously.

Our test bowling attack isn’t average by any standards. If the conditions are favourable to bowling, England are going to find it tough to post big totals against this attack.

Prasidh Krishna has really impressed me. Should be considered for the tour.

Glad him and Arshdeep both got picked.

Dream come true

Arshdeep with the red ball in England is a mouthwatering prospect

Indian fans are always bullish about their bowling attack before touring England but they never win a series there.

Indian bowling is strong but their batting is as weak as England’s. Both teams will score between 300-350 on average so it will be a very competitive series.

The biggest advantage for India is that Stokes is a clown who makes dumb decisions as captain just so that he can get praised by the media for his attacking intent. Everyone knows Bazball is a load of rubbish.

In addition, he is completely washed as a player and offers nothing in any department. Him in the team in 2025 means you are weakening your batting and bowling at the same time.

England would be better off replacing him with either a batsman or a bowler. However, it won’t happen obviously.

Very low expectations of the Test side. More about building a core for the future.

Would've preferred Rana to Arshdeep and picked someone else for 34 year old Thakur.

Bad selection overall. Shocking not to see Sarfaraz Khan. 50% of the players in the squad don’t have enough domestic experience.

Only talking about the bowling here, overall i believe England have the clear upper hand to win 3-1. Our batting is the most inexperienced we ever sent to England in decades and it cou

The pace attack however this time, the quality, variety and depth in it is exceptional. If one or two of them face injury, we are still secure. If the inexperienced batters are able to do well we can go 2-2

As per cricinfo and agarkar's interview , first test team will be more on these lines

Jaiswal
Kl
Sai
Gill (Gill at first is an opener and later he said 3. Now 4. Don't know how successful he will be on bowling tracks)
Pant
Karun
Jadeja
Thakur/kuldeep if pitch is dead track
Prasid
Bumrah
Siraj

Nitish is acknowledged as batting ar so he or jurel will come at 6 if required.

Fully expect another competitive series with England edging it 3 - 2 because of home conditions.

Alot depends on the fitness of Bumrah, if he's fit then it will be competitive, if not, I can see Englands winning margin being wider.

Chris woakes will be a key component of the England attack with his excellent record at home and should be well supported by Carse, Stokes, Atkinson.
Bashirs position is questionable for me, even though he performed against a weak Zimbabwe team, I'm still not convinced with his consistency.

Cant wait for it to start to be honest.
Hugh year ahead for Team England.

This will be a good series. Both teams are equal with the bat but India have upper hand in the bowling dept.

England are clearly the more experienced batting side and they will be playing at home so they have a clear edge in batting. We are sending by far the most inexperienced and unproven batting line up on a test tour in years.

Bowling is neck to neck.
We have a nice looking pack attack with no real weak.

Bumrah is the trump card and everyone knows that. If he plays 3-4 tests in peak fitness, he will win at least one test all by himself. He is that level bowler.

England batting vs Indian bowling this will decide the series, but if India loses this series they can say goodbye to another wtc round lol

Okay, India zindabad, happy now sir?

England will try to score 600 in 100 overs and try to bat india out of game, scoreboard pressure means india will collapse. Can india score 600 in 100 overs?

So far we've experienced a very dry period of weather here in the UK. If that trend continues, we could well have some very flat surfaces.

Thus is where the toss becomes critical and I must admit, indias spin department is far superior, but then again indias spinners are a different kettle of fish when compared to plsying on their home surfaces than away.

England will try to score 600 in 100 overs and try to bat india out of game, scoreboard pressure means india will collapse. Can india score 600 in 100 overs?
The question should be, can India score 600? The number of overs does not matter. This is not white ball cricket.

Its an example, can india score fast? or succumb to scoreboard pressure.
Why do they need to score fast? Play test cricket like test cricket.

White ball cricket should not be brought into tests. One of the reasons Eng/Bazball has been a failure.

This is the obsession of modern day cricket in red ball. Soon it will be a norm for each team

I don't think india will try to score quickly.they have a mix of both styles and are quite inexperienced. If the pitch is so flat that eng can 600 in 100 overs means India can atleast score 400 to 500.gill is an absolute ftb .jaiswal, kl and sai stick for long periods with their old school approach. eng does not have a good express pacers like archer, wood to hurry up the batsmen on flat tracks.

England will try to score 600 in 100 overs and try to bat india out of game, scoreboard pressure means india will collapse. Can india score 600 in 100 overs?
Indian bowling will not let them to score over 600 . There will not play against minnow

I'm worried about Indian batting but not bowling .

Why? They couldnt restrict Australia to 400+ on extremely spicy pitches in BGT? This happened on 2 seprate occasions. One in the rained off game and the other in the 4th test? In both games Indian batting got demolished?

This was with bumrah Included? If England prepares a flat track, why would you assume they'd restrict below 600?

England has to worry about Bumrah who still isnt 100% back to his best, they dont need to worry about the rest.

Indian bowling is great for t20 and odi and so is their batting.

Their very very behind in test cricket.

Good team. I will replace just Prasidh Krishna with Siraj.

Siraj with red dukes will be deadly in english conditions.

Prasidh Krishna is a in form bowler at This moment. He is 2nd name after Bumrah in the Indian bowling lineup . :kp

Siraj's record in England is pretty ordinary, and the other two feel more cut out for English conditions, which is why I didn't include him. Plus, he will play a few matches anyway because Bumrah is not going to play all 5 tests.

You need that seam-bowling all-rounder in England which is why one of Thakur or NKR should play.

NKR is not a test level bowler , Thakur is alright but I think England batsman will target him because he Bowls too many boundary Ball in every overs. Hope we not repeat same mistake like BGT series where we didn't played 5 proper bowlers.

Bumrah needs support from rest of bowlers and this is only possible if we play 5 proper bowler .

Indian batting is very inexperienced so not much expectations from them.
