India v New Zealand | 1st Test | Kanpur | Sep 22-26, 2016 | Day 3

Not necessarily bro.

You can score fast by punishing the loose and marginally bad balls along with solid defense.

Think of it this way. A solid defense to a good ball reduces chances of your dismissal by 95%.

You lose a few boundaries with that approach but you can score a lot more over time.

Last 2 overs...Vijay cut 2 balls that were close to the body and this over Pujara rocked back on a good length ball that could lbw him.

Small hinges swing big doors.

Whats a solid defense when you don't know whether the ball is gonna spin or not, keep low or not?If we keep defending, its gonna look all the more tougher as the bowler gets settled and is confident

Over time you can score with that approach only if pitch is expected to get flatter.Don't think thats the case here.

Here we are forcing the bowlers to adjust which gives us more scoring opportunties

So have to take every opportunity.

I think you are not getting my point Saurav.

I like the fast scoring approach but what I am talking about is reducing odds of dismissal for good deliveries that won't fetch you many boundaries anyways.

Converting relatively safer/not so good deliveries to 4s will put pressure and our top 3 are good enough to do that.

See that 4 now by Vijay...that's a safe delivery...not a bad one...not dangerous too....Vijay turned it into a 4....

Well yes.Dont think they are taking Rohit Sharma level of risk.

Rahul maybe was more risky, but these two look in control

Vijay cut a very close ball for 4.

While I like the 4 and I am in awe of his skills...kinda feel he could have avoided it.

A little bit bounce and he would have found it tough to adjust.

These 2 are our best players of spin.

India will need 300 target min on this pitch to be safe.

Cos we don't know when this pitch will truly breakup.

Was the first innings warning for Wagner on similar not,not in the middle?

Ravi mentioning the quality of spin should also speak about Boult's amazing first innings bowling figures.

Bit of a query. If the Hawkeye operators are in India for this test and evidently have all the equipment there and running why is the broadcaster not showing Hawkeye ball tracking for LBW decisions?

conspiracy!

No wonder Kiwis performed well in England they have some good pace swing bowlers.

Just got back home, wow.. the ball is doing nothing?

What the hell happened? It was turning viciously when we batted?

This match looks wrapped up. Poor bowling effort by the lower order and bowlers yet again.

Which spinner today is good when there isnt anything in the wicket?
Yasir looks quite good.

To be honest, I don't really rate that many bowlers in world cricket.

Boult IMO is very over rated, he isn't a match winner and isn't capable of knocking over quality sides.

Steyn, Starc, Rabada, Philander, Broad and Yasir are the only bowlers in world cricket I rate highly.

Philander is overrated.

There is nothing to be surprised about Aman ji. ;-)

There was turn for NZ spinners but slow one....barring the odd delivery.

Ball has started doing more now.

It was turning viciously when we batted?

It wasn't that way fully. There were pockets where it did and it died out...then did a lot....then died out.

If it had gone rogue when NZ were 150/1 in a permanent way, NZ wouldn't have crossed 200.

----

Now NZ spinners are getting serious turn now.

42nd over.

Will this be permanent or will it die out...that remains to be seen.

The thing is, these two are the best spin players in our team and it shows in both the innings of this match. The ball has already started turning and will turn more from the 40-45 over mark onwards. I won't be surprised if the rest of the guys start collapsing under turn. So these two must make the most of it.

What do think of Karun Nair? I've heard that he is the the player of spin in the country.

We deserve to be playing 2nd tier cricket, our Test team is so garbage.

Horrible bowlers and a 1 man batting line up.

Honestly I haven't watched him much other than a few IPL innings. Him, Rahul and Manish Pandey are regular high scorers in the domestic circuit. Rahul has made a mark. I have followed his scores though and quite frankly, he didn't have a good time during the A tour to Australia in both formats. I think Manish Pandey is the next in line to get a cap but all players go through this form. If he can improve on his temperament (he often makes these 30s and gets out) and develops a hunger for big scores, I think he will be in the reckoning for the test team.

We need strong pacers,we are having pretty good batting talent even in line imo. Don't see any pacer not sure what happened to khaleed ahmed and avesh khan.

If Rohit fails this series he should be dropped from tests and Pandey should be backed..

Lol he is not going anywhere. He will get at least 20 more matches to show his invisible / non-existent talent. And by fluke if he manages to score a 50 in any of match, he will torture us for 20 more matches.

I think it was a deliberate plan in Rahul going for the shots and Vijay laying down the anchor. Kohli has stressed on his liking for attacking batsmanship a lot during his interviews and has maintained that he likes Dhawan and Rohit for the same (however weird that maybe). Dhawan flopping in the west indies series and in the Duleep trophy as well forced Kohli to drop him but looks like he wants Rahul to perform Dhawan's role in the line up. Not sure if Rahul is comfortable with it though.

No doubt brother. This is a good strategy. Rahul,Che and Vijay have attackef the spinners successfully and wrested the intiative from them Hobbits. In years past, our reputation of destroying quality spinners even on minefields was so great that we could dominate them from the word go. These days even mediocre spinners fancy their chances against our lineup so it was good to see their spinners being taken apart. A flashback to the good ol' days. Long may this continue. Spinners will learn to fear us once again.

These two guys are the best spin players in our team, so it's not a coincidence. I just hope that Kohli, Rahane and the rest play with the same aggression.

Umesh Yadav is quite strong, and seems to be improving his accuracy. Commies mentioned how he now completes his bowling action still looking at the ball and the batsman.

Looks as if the Indians will bat until Tea on the 4th day and rack up a 425/450 run lead and then go after NZ. It all depends on how the pitch behaves an hour before Tea. NZ will try and put away the Indians ASAP. Then they have enough time to chase some 350 runs. All up in the air as usual. At this point though, the Indians have their tail up. Also a 4th and a 5th day wicket will weigh heavily on NZ batsmen, knowing what happened in the 1st inning. Should be fun.

No non Asian team has chased 300 in Asia. 80 odd runs more and NZ are finished. No way are they gonna chase that. However ideally we should bat for 80 overs and give out bowlers enough rest and put NZ out there as long as possible .
