This is a sort of wicket where Saffers failed mainly because they don't have stomach for a fight. It was not a 121 all out wicket by any stretch of imagination. India can't afford to get complacent in this match. India need to make as many runs as possible. 300 should be a comfortable lead, but 400 or 500 is definitely better if possible.

Indian pitches have become so difficult to bat with such run rate or is it just the failure of batsmen? How would somebody like Sehwag, Laxman cope with such pitches who have good strike rates and normally don't go with many failures in home conditions.

Don't forget Shreyas Iyer is blazing Ranji Trophy for second year running with 800+ runs. Remember its always difficult in your second season but he has gone one step ahead and bettered his first year performance. He is almost scoring runs at 100+ strike rate. And also his runs have come in different situations including difficult fourth innings run chases. It's Sehwagish. You can't keep such a talent away from the team for long. Actually Rohit too admired him when they batted together for Mumbai in a recent Ranji game.

Iyer needs to get a chance now.Rohit isnt a test class batsman.Thats pretty obvious.

Another guy is Hanuma Vihari.

Also its about time Uday Kaul of Punjab is given WK spot.Much better batsman than Saha.

No pitch can hold Sehwag. Sehwag would have perished early on these wickets or he would scored a brisk 50 or 100. Laxman can fail anywhere, he was never very consistent.

Howz AK Bains and Robin Bist? Always find them in the run scorers columns

India should take the lead to 500 atleast. SA made some similar improbable comebacks against India in South Africa..so anything is possible.

That was back on South Africa. Saffers haven't scored more than 200 more than once this series and you think they're gonna perform a record breaking chase for a non Asian team? No chance of that happening . This is all academic now. However yes we should still be ruthless and bat as long as possible .

Kinda feel bad for the schoolkids who've come all the way to watch the match.

Must be bored af watching the batsmen graft at an RR of 1.9

Kohli showing how it's done, ICC and the rest of the world should focus on improving their tactic against spin instead of blaming pitches in India. A Kohli century will make ICC writing an apology letter to :kohli

This was one ego-shattering series for batsmen. :))

Faf was averaging 50+ before this tour. Now he is 44.
Amla was 52. Now he is barely 50.
Only de Villiers has remained somewhat afloat.

It's a shocking fact that Morkel averages more than du Plessis on this tour.

We should be looking to bat for an hour tomorrow and then declare.

Some weird posting in this thread. The runrate is the least of India's worries here. We have two full days remaining. I honestly have loved the way we have ground the SA bowlers to dust. This ruthless approach where a team grinds an opposition out of the match is exactly what was needed. 2 full days to go, and we've shut SA out of the match completely, instead of going ULTRA AGGRESSIVVE POSITIVE INTENT and getting allout for 190 in 35 overs.

Very pleased with the day.

This was intelligent test match batting. There were no demons in the pitch so there was no need to take risks. If India had folded for <150, they would have left the door open a bit. Now they have ensured that only one result is possible. India need to bat till lunch tomorrow, and get to a lead of 500 and then they have five full sessions to bowl them out. I don't see SA surviving even three sessions given the way they have batted so far in this series.

Perfect batting so far.

India finally takes a leaf out of Pakistan's UAE formula which I must say is the most brilliant and soul sucking way to destroy a team.

This is more if what we should do to every touring team. Agreed. Hopefully we'll see a lot more of this when Cook and co. come next year :D

There is the widespread misconception that aggressive batting = throwing the bats around. Aggression can be displayed in many ways, like India did today by grinding the bowlers to dust.

This might be Rohit's last innings for a while now.. Ranji performers are knocking on the doors. Even his Mumbai junior - Shreyas Iyer has been in great form this season. Right time to blood him in?

South Africa's confidence dented by the earlier test matches, this pitch should have been better to bat on but they have been defeated by the earlier pitched.

Indian fans will be saying see, it's only about application but it isn't hashim amla and AB have very good records against India but the dustbowls got the better of them.

Not enforcing the follow on and batting all day, on the 3rd day, is the way to break up the pitch !!! Wise thinking ..... really. I think they will still bat until lunch on the 4th day and then have a go at SA. Don't see the match going past tea on the 5th day !!!!!

Why not Lokesh Rahul, have heard a lot about him.

I am expecting tough series between England and Pakistan tbh. At least they will play better cricket than SA.

Lead of 500 which means India should play 1st session tomorrow and then declare?

Ideally, India should declare 15 mins before lunch and get a lead of 500 by then.
Minutes before a break have a knack of creating nervousness in batsmen.

Why not Lokesh Rahul, have heard a lot about him.

He will eventually replace Dhawan at the top. Iyer/Bains/Vihari will slot in Rohit's place.

However, Kohli will try his maximum to settle Rohit in the line up. Would be great if he can sort out the issues. Rohit's a proper match winner. Just needs to concentrate more!

England and Pakistan series in England next year? That will be quite tough for Pakistan in my opinion. Or are you referring to Englands tour of India in which case I agree they will do better than SA most likely.

Yep. Nothing is more demoralizing for the bowling team than to go wicketless for long hours.

Much more urgency today. They've done this perfectly. Consolidate position yesterday till we have an unbeatable lead, then attack and swell the lead to 500.

No need to declare before tea in my opinion. 4 sessions are more than ample time to bowl out this batting lineup. The pitch wouldve turned into an absolute minefield by then.

Lunch should be enough.

Its enough to declare even now but I wanna see a daddy hundred here. Our batting this series has been completely unacceptable. This is the perfect time for Rahane/Kohli to score. Ash/Jadeja don't need more than 2-3 sessions to knock them over anyway.

Yeah we gave Rohit alot of chances when he was younger and yes it paid off in LOIs but I don't think he deserves more chances in Tests. Someone like KL Rahul might do better with all those chances. The pro lem with persisting with these guys is they will ,eventually, score a few runs in home tests only to be exposed once again when our next set of away tours start. Can't just think short term.

It's time to boot out Rohit.

I will have Rahul open with Vijay and push Dhawan to #6. That way Dhawan escapes facing the pacers early on, and due to his aggressive nature he can take on the spinners. Also he would handle the second new ball much better. Well worth a shot I believe.

I wouldve agreed with you except that Dhawan looks all at sea against good offspin as well. I think Rahul should open and Shreyas Iyer should come in as well. The guys been scoring heaps of runs and we shouldn't let him rot in domestic at the expense of Rohit or dhawan.

Next two overs should be the last of Abbott's and Morkels spells. Need to attack spinners right away.

An 88 that is far more valuable and will be remembered longer than some big hundreds hit on the pattaa of Australia, Abu Dhabi and Bangladesh.

Well done captain Kohli for leading front the front.

I thought he was pretty positive in the first inning too Indian willow If it wasn't for that unfortunate dismissal he could have also hit a Rahane type big one.

Haters plz shut up now. Kohli is a quality player and the beat of him will be seen. All players boost averages on batting pitches. He hit 4 in 4 when he got them .

The averages of batsmen in this series are worth much more. Pujara averages 33, Vijay 37 and AB 35. All 3 played superb innings on the toughest pitches in the series. Even Saha's 32 and 20 in the series were worth more than what is indicated in pure numbers.

I think his 44 in the first innings was even more valuable. We already had a substantial lead anyway in this innings when he came out to bat.

Exactly Kohli led the way in first inning with a quality 44 , got out to an unlucky dismissal in which he had no fault.

And now a quality 88,when we were 50/4.

Kohli's had a great test match.

Doesn't look easy to bat there.. Rahane has now played 2 exceptional innings in this test. Wonderful to see the application!

If Rahane keeps playing like this, it will be him who replaces Sachin and not Kohli.

Only rahane and kohli scored in this match, hope SA chase starts soon

Nice innings this. Thoroughly deserved twin hundreds.. Congrats Ajinkya!

Should have let the boys bat some more with the license to attack at will. Pile on the misery. Still not a bad declaration.

I would have batted till lunch. With Rahane getting his hundred it would have been an all-out attack :)

Exactly. Wouldve been fun to watch this last half hour atleast. Don't understand this hurry to declare. Saffers haven't lasted 3 sessions in this entire series. Highly unlikely they would have done that here either.

Just saw a bit of trivia on cric buzz : Rahane joins Sunil Gavaskar, Vijay Hazare, Rahul Dravid and Virat Kohli as the only Indians to score centuries in both innings. A very prestigious club, I hope he scales more heights.

Some great names there indeed.
