IPL 2019 auction : all you need to know

With the 2019 Indian Premier League fast ap and the all-important player auction set for Tuesday, 18 December, we break down all the need-to-knows regarding who is in, who is out, and what we are to expect this ti me around.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) returned to the fold in 2018 in scintillating style following a two-year absence, capping off a blistering campaign by toppling Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Shane Watson's unbeaten century guided the side to an emphatic eight-wicket victory.

CSK will be a firm favourites again this year, given their strong track record in the competition – they have three wins – but expect a high standard of opposition, as usual, as a plethora of fresh talent has emerged, and some eye-catching global stars have thrown their hat into the mix. Delhi have even changed their name from the Daredevils to the Capitals, so they will be hoping that a change in moniker sparks a twist in fortunes.

All eyes on Tuesday will turn to the franchise owners as battle commences in the auction room to fill the remaining vacant squad positions. While the majority of slots have already been filled with retainees from last season, 346 players, all currently without a side to their name, will look to make their way into one of the eight teams, into the 70 remaining places available.

The auction will start at 2:30pm IST (9am GMT). Richard Madley has been replaced as auctioneer after over a decade wielding the gavel, and is to be replaced by Hugh Edmeades.

Let's take a look at each side and break down which players have stayed put, who has been let go and which areas each side might need to strengthen in order to mount a title challenge.

Chennai Super Kings

Position finished last year: Winners

Star players retained: MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Faf du Plessis, Murali Vijay, Shane Watson, Ravindra Jadeja, Mitchell Santner, David Willey, Dwayne Bravo, Kedar Jadhav, Ambati Rayudu, Sam Billings, Harbhajan Singh, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Shardul Thakur

Star players released: Mark Wood

Budget: Rs 8.40cr

Areas in need of strengthening: Chennai have a strong and stable squad, with some of the world's most coveted T20 players. With only two vacancies to fill in the already 20-man strong squad, the current holders are looking very comfortable going into this year's auction. With bags of experience in their ranks, perhaps some young Indian bowling options would be useful to provide competition for the likes of Harbhajan, Tahir and Ngidi.

Delhi Capitals

Position finished last year: Eighth

Star players retained: Sandeep Lamichhane, Shreyas Iyer, Prithvi Shaw, Rishabh Pant, Colin Munro, Kagiso Rabada, Trent Boult, Amit Mishra, Chris Morris

Star players released: Gautam Gambhir, Jason Roy, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed Shami

Budget: Rs 25.50cr

Areas in need of strengthening: The departure of Jason Roy and the retirement of Gautam Gambhir left a gaping hole at the top of the order for Delhi, but the astute acquisition of seasoned opener Shikhar Dhawan is a world-class replacement. With 10 squad vacancies to fill, expect the Capitals to be busy on auction day, as a fairly scarce line-up of middle order batsmen provides a means of direction in terms of where the money must go. Rabada and Morris will also likely depart for South African international duty on 10 May, so don't expect any more Proteas players to join up.

Kings XI Punjab

Position finished last year: Seventh

Star players retained: Chris Gayle, David Miller, Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal, KL Rahul, Ravichandran Ashwin, Andrew Tye, Mujeeb ur Rahman

Star players released: Axar Patel, Yuvraj Singh, Marcus Stoinis

Budget: Rs 36.20cr

Areas in need of strengthening: Kings XI have a hectic auction day in prospect, and with 19 spots to fill, all departments require reinforcement. It could be a new-look side once the season comes about, and finding a balanced line-up alongside hitters Gayle and Miller could prove a tough task. Expect the arrival of some young domestic Indian talent, particularly in the seam department, as the home-grown bowling options look scarce.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Position finished last year: Third

Star players retained: Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Kuldeep Yadav, Piyush Chawla

Star players released: Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson

Budget: Rs 15.20cr

Areas in need of strengthening: Losing the two Mitchells is certainly a blow for the Knight Riders, and much like the Kings XI, here is another outfit somewhat depleted after last year's campaign and in search of a whole host of new players. There are 17 spots to fill, and the obvious gaps left by the Aussie pacemen need plugging, as well as options at the top of the batting order. The presence of Russell and Narine could be the key for Kolkata, as the Windies' limited-overs experts should be present for the whole tournament.

Mumbai Indians

Position finished last year: Fifth

Star players retained: Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Krunal Pandya, Aditya Tare, Evin Lewis, Kieron Pollard, Ben Cutting, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne, Jason Behrendorff

Star players released: Mustafizur Rahman, Pat Cummins, JP Duminy

Budget: Rs 11.15cr

Areas in need of strengthening: Mumbai are blessed with a plethora of overseas superstars for this year's IPL, like they so often are, spearheaded by the imperious Indian limited-overs contingent of Sharma, the Pandya brothers and Bumrah. Securing the services of Proteas keeper Quinton de Kock nice and early was a smart move too. With just one space left for an overseas player, it is likely that they could cash in on a big-money top-order batter to compliment Rohit, while the rest of the side looks generally well balanced. There are seven spots remaining for domestic cricketers, so perhaps some seam bowling back-up will be the result.

Rajasthan Royals

Position finished last year: Fourth

Star players retained: Steven Smith, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ish Sodhi, Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, Stuart Binny, Rahul Tripathi, Dhawal Kulkarni

Star players released: Jaydev Unadkat, D’Arcy Short

Budget: Rs 20.95cr

Areas in need of strengthening: Rajasthan are blessed with a mighty roster of English talent, notably the coveted duo of Buttler and Stokes, and have returning superstar Smith at their disposal too, but some back-up might be required in terms of overseas talent to fill the gap which will appear once they are forced to leave for international duties. Securing another top-tier all-rounder could also be a fruitful move for the Royals.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

Position finished last year: Sixth

Star players retained: Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Parthiv Patel, Washington Sundar, Moeen Ali, Colin de Grandhomme, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Nathan Coulter-Nile

Star players released: Quinton de Kock, Brendon McCullum, Chris Woakes

Budget: Rs 18.15cr

Areas in need of strengthening: There are 12 available spaces to be stocked in the auction, and Kohli's Royal Challengers will certainly be looking to shore up their top-order, given that only three recognised batsmen are currently in the squad. After a disappointing campaign last time out, it could be a big spending evening for Bangalore.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Position finished last year: Second

Star players retained: David Warner, Yusuf Pathan, Rashid Khan, Shakib al Hasan, Billy Stanlake, Kane Williamson, Mohammad Nabi, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Manish Pandey, Shreevats Goswami, Siddarth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed

Star players released: Shikhar Dhawan, Carlos Brathwaite, Alex Hales

Budget: Rs 9.70cr

Areas in need of strengthening: The Sunrisers look equipped for another strong campaign having retained the services of the squad's core, with Afghanistan duo Khan and Nabi set to appear alongside captain Warner once again. Shakib's early exit (15 April) might mean that one of the five available slots is filled by a high profile all-rounder, while personnel at either end of the line-up look set to resume where they left off last year.

Cut-off dates for international players

The ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, which is preceded by the IPL, means a host of overseas players will be forced to leave early in preparation for the tournament which starts on 30 May.

Cut-off dates for international players: Bangladesh – 15 April; England (only World Cup squad members) – 25 April; Ireland (not for World Cup) – 30 April; Australia – 2 May, Sri Lanka – 6 May, South Africa – 10 May.

While Afghanistan are yet to clarify their intentions regarding withdrawing players for team preparations, the Windies and New Zealand will allow their players to stay until the IPL's conclusion before joining up with their respective squads. It is also worth noting that the Australian domestic Sheffield Shield final finishes on 1 April, which could further reduce the participation of many players.

schedule in the new year.

Lockie Ferguson, Corey Anderson in IPL franchises' sights at player auction

A searing one-day series against Pakistan and an impressive debut season in 2017 should see Black Caps fast bowler Lockie Ferguson among the sought-after names at the Indian Premier League auction.

Ferguson joins 12 other New Zealand cricketers gunning for limited spots to fill out the respective rosters for next year's tournament when the auction kicks off in Jaipur late on Tuesday (NZT).

Also hoping for a recall to the IPL are Brendon McCullum and Corey Anderson, both of whom were released last month by Royal Challengers Bangalore who also jettisoned their coach, Daniel Vettori.

Ferguson was picked up for a tick over $100,000 at auction for the 2017 IPL and his rising Pune Supergiant team made the final. He made his name by taking 2-7 off four overs against Virat Kohli's Bangalore, but was overlooked at the auction for the most recent tournament.

His 11 wickets at 12.81 in the three ODIs against Pakistan last month will have caught the eye, along with the appeal of fast bowlers and allrounders in the IPL.

Ferguson set his reserve at the equivalent of $200,000, along with Martin Guptill who hasn't always found favour with IPL owners and coaches.

It will be competitive, with just 20 slots left for overseas players in the auction given a large chunk were retained by franchises including the big names of Indian and world cricket. Among those retained were nine Black Caps: Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne, Trent Boult, Colin Munro, Kane Williamson, Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner. The latter, soon to return from knee surgery, was retained by coach Stephen Fleming's Chennai Super Kings.

McCullum is an interesting case as he warms up for the Big Bash League in Australia, having been let go by his Pakistan T20 side and Bangalore in recent months amid some lean form. His status in the IPL and past performances will help his chances, along with Anderson who has performed well in India. Both set their reserve at just over $400,000.

Seamer Matt Henry, allrounder Jimmy Neesham and wicketkeeper-batsman Luke Ronchi have been to the IPL before and - all in form - may attract interest at the base price of $150,000.

Kings XI Punjab have the most slots to fill after a player cleanout, and new coach Mike Hesson will know the New Zealand players well.

Can somebody explain as to what is so special about Jaydev Unadkat?? This guy went for 11.5 crore last season and today went for 8.4 crores. Last season his stats were 15 matches played - 11 wickets taken at an average of 44 and an economy of 9.65. Seriously?? 11.5 crores for that???

KL Rahul was ruined last year.

We were also scammed into selecting Dinesh Karthik in all formats because of this.

Let's see what happens after the $$$ and 52,795 games this year.

Rajastan massively overpaid last time, this time they thought they could get him on a cheaper rate but other teams seemed wise to that strategy and basically made sure he went over what he was worth. Similar stuff happened with senior pandya last time where everyone knew mumbai were going to get him so just made it very costly.

But then you could easily pass. Is it necessary for Rajasthan to have Unadkat? His stats are extremely poor.

It’s depressing that we live in an era where cricketers like Unadkat get millions of $s every year yet someone like Pujara is one of the lowest paid Indian cricketers around.

Their best indian pacer was dhawal kulkarni, so I am going to say yes. This was one of the worst auction's in ipl history in terms of talent pool, so not much they could do about it.

Why would a parent want his child to become a Test star when you can earn millions with an IPL contract. You don't even need to play for India to become a multi-millionaire now. So from the outset, you would focus on getting your child an IPL contract and for that your technique will align towards the requirements for T20. If you are a batter, forget the classic Test match defensive technique and focus on how to clear your left leg and hit across the line for a six. And if you're a bowler, focus on slower balls and slower bouncers and not necessarily on wickets.

Who will be remembered 30 years from now?

Pujara or Unadkat?

There you have your answer. By insinuation, Pujara will have inspired more kids than Jaydev Nobody.

Pujara's income last year was 4.5 crores, BCCI paid him well, you cannot claim T20 Franchisee money when you are bad at T20.

Varun Chakravarthy

Oof, war going on bw franchises for this guy, already surpassed 8 crore mark

Varun chakravarthy sold for 8.40 crore to punjab. Bowls mystery spin.

Jaydev Unadkat and Varun Chakaravarthy fetched whopping deals of Rs 8.4 crore each in the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) auction, becoming the costliest buy among the cricketers who went under the hammer so far.

In a new city Jaipur and with a new auctioneer Hugh Edmeades, the IPL auction has continued to delight the cricket fans. There are 351 cricketers who are listed for the auction with no Indian is in the highest base price bracket of Rs 2 crore. However, left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat secured a remarkable deal to remain the one of the most demanded fast bowlers in the IPL.

Last year, Rajasthan Royals had bought him for Rs 11.5 crore but had to pay Rs 8.4 crore this time. The 10 players in the Rs 2 crore bracket are Eoin Morgan, Brendon McCullum, Chris Woakes, Lasith Malinga, Shaun Marsh, Sam Curran, Colin Ingram, Corey Anderson, Angelo Mathews and D'Arcy Short.

A total of 70 players can be bought at the auction with 20 slots available for the the foreign players. Yuvraj Singh who last played for India in June 2017, has put himself in the Rs 1 crore base price bracket this time alongside other capped Indians - Wriddhiman Saha, Mohammed Shami and Axar Patel. Yuvraj has remained unsold so far in the auction.

Mystery Spinners. Rarely worth, that too only 1st year. After that, they get found out.

I feel a bit sorry for the Pakistan players on a personal level, easily 6 to 10 of them could have picked up some healthy paychecks. Guys like Nicholas Pooran and Sam Curran are raking it in.

Atleast for Pak players...they know they wont get picked and are mentally prepared. But I am surprised that likes of Mushy and Tamim dont get a chance even after performing very well in international cricket. They give their names with reduced base price every year with an aspiration of get picked but IPL somehow rejects them. Being a well wisher of BD cricket, it pains to see this :(

Unknown players getting crores of ruppees without having ever played for their nation is a very scary message fir international cricket.

I'm absolutely fine if someone establishes himself at international level, achieves something for his country and tgen bags 12 crores, 10 crores, absolutely fine with that, but to dish out 8 crores, 5 crores, 6 crores to uncapped players at a very young age is really a scary message.

Can so much money destroy careers of people? Just what it does to young minds but on the contrary, its probably better to earn money this way (and be spoilt) rather than through illegal means

It shouldn't be painful, if you understand the market-based logic of the IPL. IPL teams have 4 starting slots for non-Indian players. They look at those slots to fill roles that they can't easily fill with domestic players. As good as Mushy and Tamim are in ODIs, they aren't exactly T20 stud batsmen. For every Mushy and Tamim, there are Mayank Agrawals, Manish Pandeys who can do that job and not cost the team an overseas player slot. There's a reason why most overseas players that attract max interest are of a few well-defined types - super-fast pace bowlers, big-slugging power-hitters, mystery spinners and allrounders. That being said if a player offers a team a valuable role, he will attract bids - Mustafiz and Shakib are prime examples - they can be expected to reliably play a role in the team.

If you think with emotion, you will take offense at the comparisons to Manish Pandey etc, but if you think it through objectively, you will realize that the T20 records of those Bangla bats isn't exactly impressive. Same reason why guys like Martin Guptill don't get bids either. India has so many domestic top order batsmen available - Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, etc. Its the guys who can come in at #6 and start hitting 6s that are rare.

My takes on 2019 IPL auction:

Surprising unsold players: (Not counting the likes of Steyn, Hales etc who are unsold because they aren't available for the whole IPL because of WC preparation)

Qais Ahmed
Mohammad Shahzad
Brendon McCullum
Ali Khan
Zahir Khan
Rillee Russouw
Chris Jordan

1. I'm not sure about the RR picks of Ashton Turner & Liam Livingstone who are untested internationally.
2. RCB went for Heinrich Klaasen. Is he available for whole IPL ? Aren't SOU players supposed to leave early ? I would have gone for Shahzad. If RCB is looking at fitness ground then Phillips or Ronchi would have been better options as they are available for whole IPL. RCB also should have picked a backup Indian keeper for Parthiv.
3. KKR went for Harry Gurney because of the left arm variation I believe. Ali Khan would have been a better option because of his death bowling skill.
4. Delhi Capitals picked Keemo Paul as a backup of Chris Morris. Chris Jordan would have been a better pick than Paul according to me.
5. SRH picked Johny Bairstow as a future investment I believe. He will not be available for whole IPL. Where is the Indian batsman replacement of Shikhar Dhawan ? SRH should have picked an Indian batsman.

He will do Ghanta.

Varun can bowl carrom bowl and had an excellent TNPL and Vijay Hazare List A matches. Lets see how he goes and whether he can be found out by the batsmen and analysts. But mystery spinners are always exciting and sought after.

Pujara's income last year was 4.5 crores, BCCI paid him well, you cannot claim T20 Franchisee money when you are bad at T20.

This. Pujara is an excellent test player. But he has to prove his worth as a T20 cricketer first. He has a S/R of 105 in 58 odd T20s. He has played in IPL before.

I believe there is shortage in the supply of Indian pace bowlers. Unadkat had an excellent IPL 2017 for RPS. That is why he was paid that much by RR. But yeah I agree 11.5 was a bit too much.

Bangladesh players won't be available for whole IPL this year. As a foreigner to get picked in IPL, extra efforts and continuous match winning performances specially in T20s have to be delivered to create pressure for selection. Quality all rounders are in demand in IPL like Shakib. Quality fast bowlers are in demand in IPL like the Fizz. The supply of overseas batsman exceeds the demand usually and there are some unlucky unsold batsmen every year.

Sad but true. No remedy in sight.

They are not good T20 players so their exclusion isnt surprising

SRH were very exciting last year. Rashid and co made them a force with the bowl. Warner's return is huge and gives them much needed firepower. Losing Dhawan is a blow for them.

I do not care if Mushy and Tamim gets picked or not.

I am just amazed at how ATG Sandeep Sharma, Jaydev Unadkat, Axar Patel always gets multi crore bids.

Some contracts in US $

Jaydev Unadkat - US$ 1.17m
Varun Chakravarthy - US$ 1.17m
Sam Curran - US$ 1.0m
Colin Ingram - US$ 889,000
Shivam Dube - US$ 694,000
Shimron Hetmyer - US$ 583,000
Jonny Bairstow - US$ 306,000
Joe Denly - US$ 150,000
Yuvraj Singh - US$ 150,000
Liam Livingstone - US$ 75,000

Can somebody share a typical IPL contract that would be given to an average player?

Two reasons Imo:
They are available throughout the season and usually prepare for it.
They don't come.under the quota of 4 foreign players.

Now they might not be talented as best, but they know Indian pitches usually and know to get the best out of it, cricket will always be location dependent.

Ashton Turner who has been picked up by Rajasthan Royals has scored 24 (46) in a BBL T20 match. I just wish they picked up someone like Mohammad Shahzad or Brandon McCullum in IPL 2019 ! It's totally totally unfair to the fans as they are denied of having an opportunity to see them play.
