Ok so few weeks back i had a discussion with the Great Khan about how our countries need to keep Kashmir on a status quo for 50yrs.And how 50 years of peace can be the bedrock to build a long term solution to the issues facing both the countries.

Now this weekend i was bouncing that idea of a few people who are in the know of these issues. And it appeared that many think Kashmir issue is only a facade and solving it isnt the prime concern of the Pakistani Army.

The objective seems to have long shifted to avenge the defeat of 1971.A through defeat of Indian Army with loss of substantial territory or dismemberment of the Indian union are some of the goals.

Is there any truth to this?If yes then how do we go about tackling this issue in the short and medium term to maintain peace.

So was 1971 consequence of the 1965 defeat Indian Army suffered?

I watch a lot of political shows and have never heard any person talking about 1971 revenge. It’s all about Kashmir, but nice try to derail the real issue.

Lol only in Pakistan they teach 1965 was a win for them read any neutral sources at best it was a draw..

On topic Kashmir is one of the issues we cannot deny that.. Ultimately if you think from a sane mind what goals has anyone achieved? Kashmiris, Indians, Pakistanis could all have been living a far better standard of life than they currently are if they had lived in peace and asked government to provide better facilities however the amount of money spent on defence is huge..

Pakistani army even if it wants revenge would achieve revenge better if they can help Pakistan overtake India and become the most developed and best state to live in sub continent that would be a bigger slap in face of every Indian than trying to gain any Indian territory while letting your citizens live a pathetic life..

If Pakistan does nothing for the next 20 years they can do zilch after that. The power disparity will be too huge for a resolution in their favour

1965 was at best a stalemate for Pakistan Army.If it was a defeat for IA then PA should have achieved their objective.Isnt it?

As i said it was mentioned to me by some people in the know of these things it may or may not be correct.

Don't think 1971 plays that big a part in the relations. Bangladesh would have formed sooner or later with or without Indian help. The two wings of Pakistan were far too diverse, no similarity in language, culture, cuisine and were separated by thousands of miles of hostile territory. The West Pakistanis also had a sense of superiority over the East and this was obviously not acceptable to the East.

If that's what the Pakistan Army wants then why under Musharraf was the Army ready to meet India halfway and find a solution?

If that is what Pak army doesn't want, why did they sabotage friendship efforts between Sharif and Vajpayee by Kargil war? In my entire life, I was never optimistic about peace between India-Pak as I was during Lahore visit of Atalji.

How old are you lol? Most young people don't even know anything about '71, you must be really old to think it's even relevant today.

Most Pakistanis dont even know about losing half their country? The Pakistan Army has forgotten the loss of 71. You sir have no idea.

Interesting Topic. i think we have to separate a few things here.

I do know of one quote from General Tariq Khan where he mentioned taking revenge for 1971. But you have to understand the context. The Pakistan army is now a battle hardened fighting force that has been engaged in war for the last ten years. That kind of engagement does elicit quotes as mentioned. Especially considering the dirty and intelligence lead nature of the war it is fighting.

With regards to what is going on within the army, its first and obvious objective is to stop Cold start. End of. Yes they will want to look to hold territory if at all possible but ultimatley we cant fight a war longer than a month and thats stretching it.

I cannot speak for the higher echelons with regards to covert ops and other objectives but from what Ive read and when Ive spoken to some relatives in the forces they do wnat a reckoning for 71 but its not a priority and is not the objective. For them stopping cold start, perhaps holding some territory, thwarting covert ops on the western border and doing damage in kashmir is revenge enough.
