Squads have been named for Ireland Men’s tour of Zimbabwe in January-February 2025, while Zimbabwe Cricket has released the tour schedule.

Waringstown CC and Northern Knights’ Morgan Topping, 25, has earned a debut call-up to the Test and ODI squads. The right-handed top-order batter, a prolific run-scorer at club level, has established himself in the top order of the Northern Knights in recent seasons.

Pembroke’s Gavin Hoey, after making his international debut in October, retains his place in the ODI squad and is in line for a Test debut – Topping and Hoey the only non-capped players in the Test squad.

Andrew White, National Men’s Selector, said:

‘After a break since the series against South Africa in Abu Dhabi, it will be great to see us get back into action in a few weeks’ time. Since 2007, there has been some wonderful contests against Zimbabwe and this should be no different -and it’s exciting to have all three formats on this tour.

“Morgan Topping gains his first international call up at senior level having recovered from injury which prevented him making his debut against South Africa last year. He has demonstrated key attributes needed to perform at international level over recent Wolves and Academy fixtures and we wish him well."

“It’s going to be exciting to see our two young spinners and the likes of Ross Adair again in action alongside the experienced players and we do, of course, have the return of Josh Little who had a big impact the last time we were in Zimbabwe.

“We also have Gareth Delany and Barry McCarthy returning from injury, while Craig Young misses out in the T20 format on this occasion."

“It promises to be a very busy cycle ahead – from 2026 to 2028 we will see three white-ball World Cups, however, we have 2025 free from ICC events to build towards this key period."

ZC announces Zimbabwe squads for Ireland series

Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has unveiled the national squads for the upcoming multi-format series against Ireland, scheduled for this February.

The tour will commence with a one-off Test match set for 6-10 February at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo.

The action will then move to Harare Sports Club for the white-ball leg, featuring three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) on 14, 16 and 18 February, followed by three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) on 22, 23 and 25 February.

Zimbabwe’s Test squad includes two new faces, the uncapped duo of 27-year-old leg-spinner Vincent Masekesa and 26-year-old top-order batter Nicholas Welch, who have both been rewarded for their impressive performances on the domestic front.

Meanwhile, Dion Myers and Tadiwanashe Marumani have been left out of the red-ball set-up.

Veteran all-rounder Sikandar Raza will also miss the Test match, as he had already committed to franchise cricket before the tour schedule was confirmed.

A major boost for Zimbabwe comes with confirmation of the availability of seasoned all-rounder Sean Williams, who was struggling with a back injury during the recent Test series against Afghanistan.

The ODI squad sees two changes, with Wessly Madhevere and Nyasha Mayavo coming in for Myers and Joylord Gumbie.

However, Myers has retained his place in the T20I squad, which now includes Johnathan Campbell, Tony Munyonga and Mayavo.

Faraz Akram and Takudzwanashe Kaitano have missed out on T20I selection this time.

Ireland beat Zimbabwe by 63 runs in one-off Test

Ireland clinched a 63-run victory on a tense final day in the one-off Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo as Matthew Humphreys' seven-wicket match haul proved crucial.

Zimbabwe started day five requiring 109 runs for victory as they chased 292 but left-arm spinner Humphreys dismissed Newman Nyamhuri for the addition of only five runs.

Crucially Humphreys then bowled Wesley Madhevere for 84 in a massive blow to the hosts' hopes of chasing down the Ireland tally.

That left Zimbabwe still requiring 73 runs for victory but they only added 10 more before Andy McBrine's dismissal of Richard Ngarava secured a third straight Test win for Ireland.

Humphreys' outstanding second-innings figures of 6-57 was his Test best for Ireland.

The Irish defeated Zimbabwe in Belfast last July, which came four months after their first Test triumph over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in what was their eighth game in the format.

Ireland's latest victory looked unlikely on day one as they slumped to 31-5 but McBrine's unbeaten 90 and 78 from Mark Adair helped the tourists regroup and they largely controlled the remainder of the contest.

Ireland have now won 3 Tests in a row (Afghanistan away, Zimbabwe at home, and Zimbabwe away).

Congratulations.

A century from Ben Curran helped Zimbabwe beat Ireland by nine wickets and claim a 2-1 victory in the one-day international series in Harare.

Opener Curran, who is the brother of England internationals Sam and Tom, occupied the crease throughout his side's innings and hit 14 boundaries as he racked up his huge contribution of 118 not out off 130 balls.

It is Curran's first international century since making his debut for Zimbabwe, who he qualifies to play for via his dad, last December.

Ireland made 240-6 off their 50 overs with Andrew Balbirnie (64), Lorcan Tucker (61) and Harry Tector (51) all reaching half-centuries.

Ireland's top-scorer Balbirnie, and Tector, built an 86-run partnership for the third wicket while Tucker and Mark Adair, who finished 26 not out, put on 67 for the sixth wicket.

Richard Ngarava and Trevor Gwandu were the pick of the bowlers for the hosts with 2-42 and 2-44 respectively.

In response, Zimbabwe reached their target off 39.3 overs to complete a comfortable victory.

Brian Bennett smashed 48 off 48 balls before falling lbw to Graham Hume, who turned out to be Ireland's sole wicket-taker.

That left the Zimbabweans 124-1 in the 20th over and Curran's subsequent partnership with captain Craig Ervine (39*) saw their side canter to their decisive win.

Zimbabwe had secured a 49-run win in Friday's opener before Ireland levelled the series with a six-wicket victory on Sunday.

The sides will now contest a three-match T20 series, beginning on Saturday, with further matches on Sunday and Tuesday to conclude Ireland's tour.

Ireland will be without opener Ross Adair for that trio of games as he was ruled out on Monday with a calf injury.

Ireland won the one-off Test between the sides in Bulawayo.
