‘Probably the most pain I’ve been in’ – Gary Wilson

There is a reason why Test cricket is named as such. In the most literal sense, it is a 'test' – of mind, of character, and patience. On Sunday 13 May, Gary Wilson embodied all these qualities, playing through injury and scoring a 74-ball 33* to help Ireland fight back after Pakistan had reduced them to 7/4 in their maiden Test.

Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Abbas had wreaked havoc on the Ireland batting line-up, significantly moving the ball under extremely favourable conditions. Kevin O'Brien fought valiantly with a 68-ball 40, but his dismissal meant Ireland were reduced to 73/8. It was then that Wilson, who had spent most of that morning in hospital, padded up and walked in.

In normal circumstances, Wilson would have been in a lot earlier. However, a knock on the elbow sustained during the morning warm-up session meant he had to spend most of the first session in the hospital undergoing scans.

If he had hopes of getting some rest on his return to Malahide, they were quashed early on. He found himself walking in at No.9 in just the 23rd over, propped up by painkillers, wearing an arm guard inside-out to protect the elbow.

Wilson grimaced on several occasions when the ball hit his bat. The pain was almost unbearable, but he pushed through the barrier. There was an instance when he had to dive in to make the crease after setting off for a single. He did that too, perhaps further hurting his elbow further.

There was another instance when he reverse-swept Shadab Khan for four, but instead of savouring the shot, Wilson writhed in pain.

He just wouldn’t give up, though. “It’s probably the most pain I’ve been in when batting," he later revealed. "It was pretty sore. I went for an X-ray and there might be a little crack there. It’s unconfirmed.

“The adrenaline sort of kicked in and I didn’t want to miss a chance to bat in the Test match. They just drugged me up and I got out there and got on with it. You’ve got a bit of a responsibility to get out there. At one point, whenever I got back (from hospital), I thought I was literally only going to try and hold an end up.”

Wilson's heroics helped Ireland reach three figures. He forged a crucial 34-run stand for the ninth wicket with Boyd Rankin (17) and then a 23-run partnership for the last wicket with Tim Murtagh.

Ireland were bowled out for 130, with Wilson finishing unbeaten on 33 off 74 deliveries. They did concede a lead of 180 runs, but it could have been much worse.

“It was pretty pleasing to get out there and play some sort of an innings,” said Wilson. "I was able to get through it, got us up to 130 which (was) probably not ideal (for) where we want to be, but I thought the two boys at the end there were unbelievable – to go back out, that showed proper guts.”

Wilson's resolve had a positive effect on his teammates. Pakistan enforced the follow-on, but this time, there was no collapse from the home side. Instead, William Porterfield and Ed Joyce, the Ireland openers, ensured the final session belonged to Ireland, ending the day at 64/0.

“Such a brave effort," said Joyce on Wilson. "I was actually behind the net when he got hit in the back arm this morning and for him to come through and get us up to 130 was a serious effort. He is that kind of a guy you always want in the change room with you.”

Despite all the pain, Wilson is likely to look back on this day fondly.

This, about how successful Abbas has been for Pakistan:

"The new kid in town, Abbas hasn't gone wicketless in the 11 innings he's played in six Tests. Only five Test bowlers - including the likes of James Anderson and Vernon Philander - have a better economy rate in the period since his debut."

That is really impressive...

Amir should ball now because its cloudy so later he does not need to ball to much.

We desperately needs wickets now!!!! Remove useless Azhar from slip.

Nearly another run out...batsmen so afraid to face Rahat that they will risk suicidal run to get to the other side!

Sarfraz going off at Hasan yet again (not necessarily Hasan's fault) despite dropping two catches on his own.

Small price to pay for the terror he strikes at the heart of the opposition batsmen!:rahat

Amir comes on to bowl...hope it's not mistake as might have had another run out in when Rahat was bowling...

To much pressure on Abbas since Rahat is useless, Faheem is okish and Amir's catches are dropping by Mr. Moral 2 .

If Micky is serious about England test he should send back Amir and Rahat and bring Sadaf and Hamza/Shaheen

Our bowling looks serious weak. We really need to get 2 proper bowlers.

Shadab should come over the wicket. Brings lbw into play as well as that slip for the wrong un.

Some of the Irish batsmen are better than couple of our batsmen.

A lead of 100 would be intresting here as pakistans batting is poor under pressure, whether ireland can make pakistan bat again is another matter.

nice going Ireland. It will be a big achievement if Ireland force Pakistan to bat in 2nd inning.

Anything over 150 we will loose this match considering most of our batsmen are vulnerable in chasing.

Wrong move!!!! Save Amir and Abbas for new ball and burn out useless Rahat, give balls to Haris, Babar 3-4 overs each

Amir looking in good rythm today, hopefully he can continue like this.

He is taking easy on the newest test playing nation..... otherwise they would give up the sport and pick up Curling :rahat

Helping the game grow. They should have a statue put up outside the ICC headquarters :rahat1

Pakistan should be a tad worried I think with England coming up.

Amir has been sensational, Rahat and Faheem fairly average, Abbas disciplined.

I think our bowling unit will be fine. It is batting I am worried about.

Bowling attack looks blunt in my view. Abbas is good but he is not going to run through teams, Amir takes wickets once in a blue moon, Rahat is rubbish, Fahim is not a threat by any means, and Hasan has yet to make his mark in Test cricket.

In addition, these conditions are not conductive for Shadab and neither does he have the experience and discipline for Test cricket yet.

The England series is shaping up to be a nightmare for us.

Rahat is the probably the only bowler who swings it more with the Kookabarru in the UAE then with the Dukes in England.

The phenomenon :rahat

I don’t like nightmares, stop it.

tbf Amir has been outstanding, even when not taking wickets he creates such pressure

That pressure will be canceled out by the other bowlers who will release the pressure. It is a mediocre attack but you have not batted to your full potential, and you also got unlucky with Joyce's run out, who was looking good and could have dug his heels for a 70+ score.

England should be scoring at least 350 against this lot, and that is well beyond the capabilities of our rubbish batsmen.

Looks like the Irish public will get a chance to watch Azhar Ali bat again. Going to get their full money's worth :azhar2

Why is the glass always half empty with you?!

I agree with some of your views(Rahat) but would never slate the team. We are in a transitional phase and haven't got the world beaters of yesteryear but give the team a chance. They will not be successful overnight, if you're a supporter be patient and stop the hate. I am sure you will be the first to celebrate the success.

Ireland win by 4 wickets.

Unlucky Syed1 Markhor :yk

Weasley is channel his inner Hussey here. A hundred would be massive for Ireland.

tbh I'm just glad we're making Pakistan work for it and sticking it out. Fully expect us to capitulate when the new ball is taken but its been a much better effort.

If only our first innings wasn't so dreadful, had we managed even a lead of 100 it could've been slightly nervy

We haven't had world beaters for over a decade now, and we have always been in transitional phase. Our team of the last 3-4 years looked good but that was because they were hiding in the UAE. I am not hating on them, just stating the obvious. I don't see us getting into the top four rankings in Tests for years.
