In tests, Root's career average which was above 50 since he was 24, has been actually slipped down to 49 and considering his form and inability to score big as consistently as other members of fab four, it seems that just like Amla, Root might end up with a test average under 50 and even around 46-47.

In ODI cricket, he seems a very fluent player quite like Amla was in his days and currently averages over 50 at a good strike Rate. However, he probably lacks the switching gears under pressure as apparent by WC final and hence was overshadowed by Stokes, Roy, Archer and Bairstow as major WC performers for England.

Do you think Joe Root is heading the Hashim Amla way and hence, is probably the weakest of fab four?

Root just played an important role in winning the world cup. Any comparison with Amla is invalid.

Root was England’s best batter in the WC in terms of aggregate. He wasn’t overshadowed - those others catch the eye because they hit more sixes.

The captaincy is interfering with his batting as it does with most England skippers. There is a case for giving the captaincy to one of the lesser batters instead of the main run scorer.

I would give the captaincy to Butler.
he may be out of form but only takes one nice cover drive or another shot to regain it.

Butler always speaks well when interviewed and I just have a hunch that he can be a great captain.

Its just 49....

He still cruises to 50 more or less every time he plays test cricket!

For all the Williamson hype, I rate Root higher. Probably just below Smith and Kohli, but hes still good enough to be in the conversation.

If he becomes as good as amla his team won't lose against windies and aus in home.
Amla is so much ahead of root in test cricket, its not even funny.
Amla has played clutch knocks in test matches, he was a choker in odis but in tests he was a champion.

Root is still quite young. He has the time to come back. It is not like England have any replacement for him in Test currently.
