Is Rohit Sharma the most entertaining modern day batsmen?

he is a product of his time , he suceeds because LOI tracks are 90% flat and then he goes missing in the 10% , if he was in any other decade post Golden Era with the exception of the Noughties era he would've failed miserably.

Rohit Sharma is now one of the biggest names in world cricket. Apart from being the Indian cricket team captain, his batting prowess has made him one of the most respected cricketers. Always considered as a rare batting talent, made his India debut in 2007 in an ODI against Ireland. Currently, Rohit has 3379 runs in 49 Tests (average 45.66), 9825 runs in 243 ODIs (average 48.63) and 3853 runs in 148 T20Is (average 31.32). He is one of the few players to have scored a ton in all three formats. Despite having such a track record, there was a time when Rohit was depressed due to his cricket career.

Indian women's team star Jemimah Rodrigues has revealed a conversation with the Indian men's team captain regarding the time when he was not picked for the 2011 World Cup in India.

"Rohit Sharma was also dropped from the 2011 Word Cup. I asked him the question, '10 years down the line, you are leading India, did you ever think that this would happen?' He (Rohit Sharma) was like 'No, a lot of people came up to me at that time and said a lot of things but nobody knew what I was going through'. There was only one person, Yuvraj Singh, who came up to him (Rohit), took him out for dinner and there was nobody else. He said he was depressed for a month. Because the WC is something that you dream about. So, when he said that, I was crying inside. I was literally in tears," Jemimah Rodrigues said on 'Breakfast With Champions'.

"He said: 'Tough times will happen but you know it is what you do next. Make sure when you get the next opportunity, you are ready for it. It happens (or) doesn't happen it's fine.' And that stuck with me. I don't have to prove to anyone or anything. I just have to play for the pure joy of the game," she said.

Kris Srikkanth while commentating on Mumbai Indians and Chennai Superkings game: "Not Hit Sharma". Rohit Sharma should change his name to ‘NO HIT SHARMA’, I will not even play him in XI if I was Captain of MI."

NEW DELHI, May 7 (Reuters) - Batting great Sunil Gavaskar has advised India captain Rohit Sharma to take a break from the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) to keep himself fit and fresh for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia next month.

Mumbai Indians captain Rohit fell for his 16th duck in IPL, most by any batters in the tournament's history, in Saturday's defeat by Chennai Super Kings and now has five runs from four innings.

The off-colour opener demoted himself to number three against Chennai but fell for his second successive duck after attempting an ill-fated scoop shot against Deepak Chahar.

Rohit will lead India's bid for the WTC title at the Oval on June 7 and Gavaskar felt a break could do wonders to the opener's fitness and confidence.

"I would say that Rohit should maybe take a break for the time being and keep himself fit for the World Test Championship final," the former India captain told Star Sports channel.

"He can come back again for the last few matches, but right now (he should) take a little bit of a breather himself."

New Zealand beat India in the final of the inaugural WTC in 2021 and Rohit would have to lead by example if they are to prevail this time around despite mounting injury woes.

India will be without pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, recovering from a back surgery, and first-choice wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who remains sidelined after a horrific car crash in December.

Batters KL Rahul (thigh) and Shreyas Iyer (back) have also been ruled out of the contest at the Oval with injuries.

Five-time champions Mumbai, the most successful IPL team, are sixth in the points table having won five of their 10 league matches so far.

They host Royal Challengers Bangalore in their next match at the Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma's workload "have doubled" in the past years and said that not being in form with the bat has affected Rohit's captaincy as well. Rohit is the most thriving captain in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL), having led MI to five title victories- the highest in the IPL - in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. They did, however, have one of their worst seasons last year, finishing last on the standings with only four victories in 14 games. Prior to pulling together a couple of victories, they also dropped their first two games this season. They are now ranked sixth in the standings.

Shastri agreed that not being in form with the bat has affected Rohit's captaincy as well.

"If you start getting on a purple patch where you are scoring runs, the job as a captain becomes much easier, the body language on the field changes, that energy on the field is different as opposed to when you are not getting runs. You can go flat no matter who you are," Shastri told a media source.

IPL 2023 season is not going well for MI captain Rohit as in ten matches, he has scored 184 runs at 18.39 and a strike rate of 126.89. This includes two ducks.

"That's where, as a captain, it is more important that your performances come into play. It is harder now because of the stage of his career, and the kind of team that they have. The same team could be a terrific team in a year's time or two years' time, once they start gelling together. But to get that right mix, that's the job of the captain," he added.

"The resources you had two or three years ago aren't quite the same. The challenges as a captain might have doubled for him. The work as a captain would have doubled as opposed to two years ago when everything was nice, set - go out there and do the job," Shastri said.

Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma had yet another forgettable outing in the IPL 2023 in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. With MI chasing a huge 200-run target against RCB, much was expected from the skipper. However, Rohit was dismissed in the fifth over by Wanindu Hasaranga. Rohit wanted to steer a delivery by Hasarange to leg-side only to be hit on the front pad on the final ball of the over. Though the on-field umpire gave not out, RCB took review and Rohit was out on 7 off eight balls.

This is the first time that Rohit Sharma has been dismissed for five successive single figure scores in the T20 league. His previous worst being four single-digit scores in IPL 2017. Rohit Sharma last five innings: 2(8b), 3(5b), 0(3b), 0(3b), 7(8b).

Neither the players, selectors nor administrators (even media & fans at times) in "India" understand when it is time up for a player to go out & retire! They will hang around until they become a liability & lose all their credentials! People will even start to forget their glory days, we will get fed up about them so much! This is the story with Indian players... Look at international players (for e.g., ABD). They will leave the stage when people still want them...

We will continue to see the torture of Kohlis, Rohits, Rahuls playing! And other promising players remain in sideline until they lose all their charm & become the new Kohli, Rohit, Rahul well past their prime!

Lol there are those people who still want Shoaib Malik back in the side…

A guy that started playing internationally nearly 25 yrs ago

Don't really rate him all that high. Very good player but not among all time greats. His T20 World Cup performance is mostly poor and in Tests, he was a late bloomer. In ODIs, he is excellent but overall career is not necessarily ATG level.

He will make my all time ODI XI though

None of the two can score ODI double hundreds on will like the hitman!

Hitman won't hit any double hundred if he played in their era. He is an extremely overrated batsman who laid eggs for 6 years between 2007-13 and after that long run only he started performing well.

Hitman is good and is comparable to Fakhar in this Erea.

I compared Dhawan with Fakhar in one of the threads and most Pakistanis blasted me saying that I am trolling to show Fakhar in a negative way and this is not a valid comparison.

If you see their names, there is something more common as well :

ShikhAR DhawAN
FakhAR ZamAN

Mumbai Indians suffered a crushing loss to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 to bow out of the tournament. MI was blown away by a sensational knock by Shubman Gill who blasted 129 in 60 balls and clubbed with Sai Sudarshan's 43 and Hardik Pandya's 28, took GT to a massive score of 233-3.

The Rohit Sharma-led side did well chasing in earlier matches, with the team hunting down 200+ scores four times this season, however, this was a task that needed big contributions from the top order if MI had to get close. Ishan Kishan was ruled out of the match due to concussion and it needed a big innings from skipper Rohit Sharma to set up the chase. However, Rohit once again failed to live up to the expectations and was dismissed for eight runs by Mohammed Shami.

Rohit's below-par show in the must-win game invited big criticism for the MI captain. Former Australia cricketer and commentator Matthew Hayden went on to slam Rohit Sharma and said that he has never seen Rohit perform for MI or India when the team needed him to.

"Never saw Rohit Sharma performing when his team needs him the most, whether it's for India or MI," upset Matthew Hayden said as quoted by businessupturn.com. A lot was expected of Rohit in the ongoing season but the skipper failed to live up to the standards and didn't make any significant contribution to the team.
