What's new

Is Vernon Philander going to be recognised as a great of the game? [Retires after England series]

Longevity doesn't make anyone better.

Who's had a bigger impact for his country in Tests? AB or Steve Smith?
Is AB a better bat for his "longevity"? Or do we have different parameters?

Border. Best Aussie batsman I ever saw, after Chappell. Excellent record against WI.

Line and length bowlers will never run through sides in all conditions, history suggests that unless the said bowler is Ambrose.

Maybe we should first ask,

Do non-line and length bowlers do better than line and length bowlers in all conditions? If so, which non-line and length bowlers?

More generally. who are these bowlers who do "run through" sides in all conditions?

How consistent were their demolitions? Did they also fail in the same conditions? Does such failure matter?

I think he won't be recognised like Steyn, Marshall, Imran, Wasim, Waqar and McGrath.

A tier below them.

Steyn is a perfect example. Wasim is another. Was had plenty of 5fers in an out of the sub continent. Ditto for Marshall, Waqar etc.

Not many bowlers have ran through batting line ups in all conditions.

South African number 8 playing cover drives and backfoot punches in the mould of Jacques Kallis.

And against Mohammad Abass who is one of Top Test pacers around in Int Cricket.

Shear quality.

Faheem Ashraf & Amad Butt need to take inspiration from Philander and no better person than S Masood wrt work ethics n focus needed to up ur game.

He is a quality player to have in your team. But perhaps he needs to do more in Asian countries to achieve the greatness. He looked a nobody against a mediocre SL in SL.

Outside Asia, it will be futile to underestimate him

This is a nice chance for Vernon to improve his records on subcontinent in the upcoming series.
If there is movement in the pitch then he will trouble many batsman including Rohit Sharma who is walking wicket against moving ball otherwise he will be treated as a trundler.

hell no. He always deigns to tour india. He is afraid his figures will drop. Is he scared again and is he going to fake an injury?

He is a good bowler but definitely not a great. His figures are dubious.

His numbers are quite dubious. Lol on soso_killer , who used to argue how great Philander was, he was so ineffective in Sri Lanka itself that Faf himself stopped Philander from bowling in those conditions.

He is a SA great, still won't make the all time XI though. Steyn, Donald, Rabada, Pollock were all much better.

As for ATG...lol

Philander was a great bowler but he was not a legend. I think he will be forgotten just like many other pacers.

A stock bowler in Asian conditions but in conditions where there is something for swing/seam bowling, he is absolutely outrageous.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have the legacy as some of the great SA bowlers had- Donald, Steyn, Pollock and now Rabada.

He is in the other tier alongside Morne Morkel and Makhaya Ntini.

One thing I will recognize and remember is how he conveniently gets injured when there are no seaming conditions on offer. Even in South Africa, he gets fit for the Newlands test even if injured before :ua

Vernon Philander announces retirement after England Test series

Monday, 23 December 2019

Standard Bank Proteas all-rounder Vernon Philander, has called time on an exemplary international career with the announcement of his retirement from all forms of international cricket at the end of the Test series against England in January 2020.

In an international career that has spanned more than 12 years, Philander has played 97 matches across all three formats, taking a combined 261 wickets with 1784 runs scored.

The 34-year-old from Cape Town burst onto the scene with an unforgettable debut Test match against Australia in November 2011. It saw him take an outstanding combined 8/78, including a famous spell of 5/15 that had the visitors bowled out for 47 in their second innings of the Test at Newlands as South Africa cantered to victory by eight wickets. He also took a record-breaking 51 wickets in his first seven Test matches which earned him the 2012 South African Cricketer of the Year accolade at that year’s Cricket South Africa annual awards gala along with Test Cricketer and Fans Cricketer of the Year trophies.

Over and above those enviable achievements, Philander picked up 100 Test wickets in 20 matches and pulled off an remarkable batting innings of 105 minutes and 98 balls for an unbeaten 27 runs in Sri Lanka in 2014 to save the Test match, helping South Africa regain their number one Test ranking.

Philander made the following statement:

I would like to hereby announce that I will be retiring from international cricket at the conclusion of the Test series against England. I feel that it is the appropriate time to conclude what has been an amazing journey.

I want to give thanks to my Heavenly Father for blessing me with the opportunity to represent my country for the last 12 years. It has been a honour and privilege to have played alongside the very best in the game as well as being part of the best test team for a number of years.

Thank you must also go to CSA, the Cape Cobras, all the coaches, management, captains and team mates and the very special fans from all over the world for your love and support.

I would like to say a special thanks to my wife, family and friends for your loyalty and support on this journey which has obviously had its ups and downs. And to my number one fan since day one – Mom, thank you so much.

I would like to express my gratitude to all the sponsors of the game of cricket in South Africa as well as my own amazing sponsors who have become like family over the years.

My entire focus and energy at this time is to help the Proteas beat England which I am really looking forward to. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Love,

Vernon Philander.”

Cricket South Africa Director of Cricket, Graeme Smith commented on the effect that Philander has had on the Proteas set-up and South African cricket as a whole.

“Vernon has been an outstanding performer in the time that he has represented his country, especially in the Test format. He has made a huge impact for the Proteas and has been at the frontline with the ball for most of his time in the set-up. He has given his best in every appearance and I think that how he has turned himself into an all-rounder has been particularly pleasing to watch.

“One of the many things that have stood out for me with Vern is his character, his determination and the way that he has always been up for a fight and a challenge has shown the heart of the man. He has really done himself and his family proud and I hope he can finish his final series for South Africa with the same character and flair that has become synonymous with him.

“I wish him all the best for his future endeavours and I’m certain that he will continue to make an impact on the game we all love in one way or another with future generations,” he concluded.

CSA Acting CEO Dr. Jacques Faul echoed Smith’s remarks saying; “Vernon has made a huge contribution to the success of the Standard Bank Proteas over the past years, particularly in Test cricket. Nobody will ever forget his memorable debut against Australia in 2011 in red-ball cricket or his remarkable opening spell against New Zealand, also at his beloved Newlands, when he took what was is the fastest five-wicket haul in the history of Test cricket as far as it can be ascertained.

“The finest tribute one can pay is that he briefly overtook our acknowledged champion, Dale Steyn, as the No. 1 ranked bowler in Test cricket.

“He also made big contributions with the bat, notably to save a Test match in Sri Lanka, while his all-round contribution with bat and ball went a long way to win the memorable Lord’s Test match in 2012 and earn the Proteas the No. 1 ranking in Test cricket.

“On behalf of the CSA family I thank him for his valued contribution to South African cricket over an extended period of time and wish him everything of the best for his future endeavours,” concluded Dr. Faul

In my opinion here's my rank of South African bowlers -

Tier 1 - Steyn, Donald, Pollock

Tier 2 - Morkel, Rabada, Ntini

Tier 3 - Philander, Nel, Ngidi

Tier 4 - Kallis, Langeveldt, Abbot

excellent list, except I would place Abbot on tier 3 and demote Nel to tier 4.

Vernon Philander will take the Kolpak route after retiring from internationals according to sources, he got few offers from English county teams.

I am not a big fan of Vernon Philander but surely he has done at least enough to be at the same level as Makaya Ntini.

The guy had another 3-4 years left. Is the pay in South African Cricket so poor that players are being forced to take the Kolpak route?

I am not a big fan of Vernon Philander but surely he has done at least enough to be at the same level as Makaya Ntini.

Ntini's pace ensured he remain relevant in all conditions he played. Philander's pace rendered him useless in unhelpful conditions. Ntini is also the first black South African fast bowler and an icon of the highest order. Philander is nowhere near his stature.

Remarkable statistically, but lack of longevity made sure that he will not be counted among greats of the game. He is atleast 80 wickets short on that front.

You could smell his retirement from a mile. It was obvious for a very long time that it is only a matter of time before he takes the Kolpak route. He is misfit in this young looking South African attack.

Philander is amazing on helpful pitches, isn't too bad on others, may not be a ATG but definitely a SA great.

It’s the right time. He is picking up injuries and isn’t much use outside of South Africa these days. Furthermore South Africa have some young bowlers coming through. Good call by him to retire as he easily could have carried on for another 18 months.

How I wish our players could learn from Philander.

india ended his career. I knew it. Called it a while back. He has been ducking the india tour for ages. Many Aussies ducked the india tour too. Faking injuries and other stuff to preserve their average. Ryan Harris, hilfenhaus, philander.
Wouldn't surprise me if starc pulls out again. Ngidi pulled out last time too. Was unfit to even bowl lol. Too many SENA track bullies here. Useless away from home.

Very true a lot of modern day fast bowlers have not enjoyed touring India, that’s why the likes of McGrath, Steyn, Wasim should be given props as they were always ready for tours of india.

you missed fannie de villiers, who imo was a solid tier 2 bowler, only not tier 1 because he had a shorter career cos of south african isolation.

id say steyn, morkel, pollock, rabada (if he continues for another 7 or 8 years) tier 1

morkel, ntini, de villiers, phillander tier 2

abbot, nel, ngidi, kallis tier 3

langevedlt, mcmillan, klusener, hall tier 4

absolutely mate. To me what steyn did in india is freaking incredible. Always have respect for steyn and wasim too.
Both are easily 2 of the Greatest bowlers of all time. I would put mcgrath at 3 only because he did more of a containing job rather than wicket taking in india.

in terms of ability morkel should be in tier 1. My personal opinion though. So should abbot. ngidi can get to tier 2.

in odis id agree, in tests steyn, philly and rabada consistently averaged better than him in matches they played together.

Of course, Fannie was to Donald just as Ntini was to Poolock or Morkel was to Steyn. Unfortunately there is no Steyn/Pollock/Steyn to Rabada. Good catch.

It's funny he failed longevity despite being a test specialist and a trundler. No wonder he got scared straight after India tour.

Vernon Philander likely to sign a 3 year Kolpak deal with Somerset ahead of 2020 county season.

honestly pollock was a bit overrated. he never performed vs australia at their best and away vs pakistan or Sri Lanka.

I've heard that Vernon Philander is another South African going the Kolpak route and is likely to sign a deal with Somerset ahead of the 2020 county season.

He's finished at this level. Was comfortably trundling at 77 mph in India and didn't look that good in the last home season either.

honestly pollock was a bit overrated. he never performed vs australia at their best and away vs pakistan or Sri Lanka.

Pollock performed well in Pakistan test series 1997 where South Africa won the series in Pakistan.
In Srilanka he had 2 good tours,
I agree with you he didn't performed well against Australia but Pollock did well in 1997 tour of Australia,he also missed 2 home series against Australia when he was in his prime due to injury.

Post 1990s, SA have produced three ATG fast bowlers- Steyn, Donald and Pollock. Philander, Morkel and Ntini are in very good bowlers tier but not greats of the game.

Since 90s, the SA trio are well inside in the top 10 bowlers across the world.

McGrath
Wasim
Steyn
Ambrose
Donald
Waqar
Pollock
Walsh

Warne
Murali

Anderson, Kumble, Gillispie are next to follow.

Wasim was also a containing bowler in a few countries .

McGrath has more than 4 wickets per match in india (33 wickets )with avg of 21
Better than wasims record in india.
Wasim averages 28 in india with 27 wickets in 8 matches
In eng, South Africa, wasim has avg of 28 and 39 respectively.

However, wasim completely outbowled McGrath in Sri Lanka, wasim avgs 20 in Sri Lanka.
McGrath avgs 29, with 10 wickets in 4 tests.

If Rabada does well in future I will rate him better than Steyn.

But he would have to improve his performances in subcontinent for that.
Steyn tore apart much better Indian batting line ups

Rabada is struggling in india against much weaker batsmen

Even if rabada takes two 7 wickets hauls in 2 different innings. He still would not outbowl steyn.

In England, rabada might outbowl steyn

Philander confirms Kolpak contract

Proteas seamer Vernon Philander has confirmed signing a Kolpak contract with Somerset in English county cricket.

Philander, who took four wickets on day two of the ongoing first Test against England at SuperSport Park in Centurion, will retire from all forms of international cricket at the end of this four-match series.

https://www.sacricketmag.com/philander-confirms-kolpak-contract/

Not an ATG but definitely a great of the modern era.

He was atrocious in India. Performing in India is the gold standard of Test cricket at the moment. If you cannot do well in India, you do not deserve to be regarded as a great of the game.

A great for South Africa. Based on his batting and bowling, he was a very useful performer for them. If only he had been fitter.

He was phenomenal when his efforts helped dethrone England in 2012. His ER is excellent for someone not known to be quick.

tough one. I must say I am impressed by him in SENA. It's just incredible.

He is so freakishly good on SENA pitches. It's the complete opposite in sub continent.

He is a very good bowler but not a true ATG. I mean not a legendary ATG who is top tier.

second tier ATG for sure.

First tier (tests) in my lifetime: Ambrose, Steyn, Wasim, McGrath, Donald, Waqar, Pollock etc

Second tier: Anderson, M Johnson, Philander, Broad etc.

VERNON PHILANDER AGREES PERSONAL TERMS

Somerset County Cricket Club are today able to officially confirm that we have agreed personal terms with Vernon Philander for him to become a Somerset player in 2020.

The Club will now be working through all of the necessary processes with the ECB in order to be able to register him as a Kolpak player once the current South Africa versus England Test series has been completed.

It has been widely reported over the last few days that the South African would be joining the County, but the official paperwork required to complete the deal is being finalised with the ECB, with the Club working towards the full procedure being completed successfully in the New Year.

The 34-year-old, who would be available to play in all formats of the game for the County, is no stranger to Somerset having represented the Club in 2012. During his five-match stint seven years ago he claimed 23 wickets at an average of 21.43 with a best of five for 43 against Middlesex.

Philander recently announced his intention to retire from international cricket after the current series with England. Since making his international debut in 2007, he has represented South Africa on more than 90 occasions across all formats, claiming over 260 wickets and scoring over 1700 runs.

In Test cricket he has claimed 216 wickets at an average of 22.16 and he reached the 50-wicket mark after only seven matches.

Somerset Director for Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “Vernon is undoubtedly a genuinely world class performer and we are delighted to have agreed terms with such a talented player.

“When the possibility of signing him presented itself, and considering the challenges that we feel lie ahead of us with regards to achieving our aspirations, we felt that it was too good an opportunity to miss.

“To put it simply, he is one of the very best bowlers in the game and he would add quality to any team in the world. His experience and knowledge of the game will also be of huge benefit to our bowling group, especially the young players looking to break in to the First XI.

“When we consider the development that a number of our senior bowlers have made in recent years, and the number of those bowlers who are now playing international cricket or on the cusp of playing International cricket, it is vital for us as a Club to ensure that we have the quality and depth in our squad to fulfill our aims of winning silverware in all three formats.

“The addition of Vernon to our bowling unit will enable us to continue to manage the workloads of all of our quality seamers through the demands of a full and demanding season even more effectively.

“As a Club, our procedures usually dictate that we only comment on player acquisitions when the deal is finalised. However, this story has been circulating through various outlets over the last few days and we feel that it is important that our Members and supporters receive information on such speculation through the official channels.”

Vernon Philander said: “I’m really pleased to have agreed personal terms with Somerset. It’s a great Club and I really enjoyed my time there a few years ago.

“I know that they won the 50-over cup last year and came close in the Championship and hopefully I’ll be able to help them to another successful year in 2020. Right now, I am 100% focused on the series against England and then my focus will turn to my next chapter.”

South Africa should breathe a sigh of relief that their brain-drain is finally ending. And I don't think they would mind Amla and Philander going Kolpak seeing how their careers were finished anyway.

Nothing wrong with being a home specialist!

He’s a very fine bowler. Amongst South African quicks my all-time red ball rankings would be:

1 Mike Procter
2 Dale Steyn
3 Vince Van Der Bijl
4 Neil Adcock
5 Allan Donald
6 Shaun Pollock
7 Vernon Philander
8 Kagiso Rabada

I heard it’s worth a 100k a year. Than during the English winter you can play in T20 leagues and some of the IPL before the county season starts.

I can see why South African players are taking the Kolpak route.

Previously reported deals of the likes of Abbott and Rossouw have apparently been around £200k a year and been multi-year deals. It's a bit more than they get from CSA and a lot more job security.
