Is Vernon Philander going to be recognised as a great of the game? [Retires after England series]

Vernon Philander’s Test bowling career has come to an unfortunate end after he suffered a hamstring tear in England’s second innings at The Wanderers.

Philander pulled up nine balls into his spell with the new ball and ran off holding his leg. Scans confirmed a grade two hamstring tear, meaning the all-rounder was unable to bowl for the remainder of the innings.

There were fears that, with Philander having confirmed his intention to retire before the start of the Test series, that his last action in international cricket would be limping off the field. But South Africa head coach Mark Boucher confirmed Philander will be available to bat as the Proteas attempt to gun down a world record 466 to win.

He ends having taken 224 wickets and with a bowling average of 22.32.

Definitely a SA great. Absolutely destructive in helpful conditions and very economical at the same time. Capable with the bat also.

South African fast bowler Vernon Philander has said that “chaos” in the country’s cricket administration hastened his decision to retire from international cricket.

In an interview with the Afrikaans-language newspaper Rapport, Philander also said that a controversial decision to select him for the 2015 Cricket World Cup semifinal in New Zealand had affected him as well as Kyle Abbott, who was left out of the side despite being in outstanding form.

Philander, 35, retired from international cricket after the final Test against England last month, having announced his decision before the series started.

He said the problems in Cricket South Africa’s administration, which led to the suspension of chief executive Thabang Moroe and calls for the board to resign, had been a factor in his decision to quit the South African team and sign a Kolpak deal with English county Somerset.

“As a player, you get to the point where you’ve had enough,” he said. “CSA’s former management only started looking after themselves, the players were the last ones they worried about. Too many things went wrong in the last while, I had to decide what is the best road ahead for me. Then I decided to retire.

“I am 35 now, with a decent career behind me, but I would have considered playing longer if not for the chaos in our cricket administration.”

He said that recent changes, which include the appointment of former captain Graeme Smith as interim director of cricket, had brought “more credibility back now at CSA. Hopefully we’ll see a turnaround in fortunes at administrative level and on the playing field.”

Philander gave his version of one of the most controversial selection decisions in South African cricket history, when he was selected for the 2015 World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Auckland.

Philander had been injured during the tournament and did not play in South Africa’s convincing win over Sri Lanka in the quarterfinals.

The team management wanted to field an unchanged team but it was widely reported that on instructions from South Africa it was forced to pick a fit-again Philander ahead of the in-form Abbott because the quarterfinal team had included only three players of colour, instead of the target of four.

“I blatantly and openly told the coach (Russell Domingo) that the best player should play,” said Philander.

“He told me: ‘You are the best player for the day, you’re playing. But they were clearly not open and honest with me and Kyle. There were definitely things going on behind closed doors.”

Philander said that although he and Abbott were good friends, “both of us took a bit of a knock because of what happened there.” South Africa was beaten in a dramatic semifinal.

Abbott became a high-profile Kolpak signing when he announced an agreement to play for Hampshire midway through a Test series against Sri Lanka in January 2017.

Somerset CCC can today confirm the cancellation of Vernon Philander’s contract by mutual agreement.

Vernon was due to join the Club in early April, but the impact of the global Coronavirus outbreak and postponement of cricket until at least the 1st July have resulted in both parties reluctantly agreeing to cancel the contract with immediate effect.

Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry said: “These are clearly very uncertain and challenging times for all Counties with no cricket until at least the 1st July and the likelihood of a condensed and truncated season.

“It was such an exciting prospect to visualise Vernon returning to the Cooper Associates County Ground, but given the current uncertainty the cancellation of his contract was a prudent and sensible decision.

“I would like to thank Vernon and his management team for their understanding of the current situation and we hope one day to see Vernon back wearing Somerset colours”

The younger brother of former South Africa international Vernon Philander has been shot dead in Cape Town.

Tyron Philander was 32.

According to South African media reports, Tyron was delivering water to a neighbour in Ravensmead on Wednesday when he was fatally shot. His family were washing in the yard when they heard gunshots.

The unidentified shooter is still at large.

Vernon confirmed the news via a statement on his Twitter handle, asking for privacy.

“I would like to confirm the following and wish that our family’s wish to allow us to mourn be respected. Thank you all for the love and support,” he tweeted.

He has asked not to speculate around the incident as they still have no details.

“Our family is coming to terms with the brutal murder in my hometown of Ravensmead earlier today. I would like to ask that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time,” the statement read.

“The murder is now the subject of a police investigation and we respectfully ask that the media give the police the space to conduct a thorough investigation. There are no details around the incident at the moment and speculation will make it very difficult for us as a family to mourn in peace.

“Tyrone is forever in our hearts. May his soul rest in peace.”

Vernon, who announced his retirement in January this year, was an integral part of South Africa Test setup as he became one of the finest seam bowlers of his time.

His numbers are quite dubious. Lol on soso_killer , who used to argue how great Philander was, he was so ineffective in Sri Lanka itself that Faf himself stopped Philander from bowling in those conditions.

Anderson averages 46 in Sri Lanka? 🤔

And where did I say he was an ATG? 🤔

If Anderson is an ATG, then definitely Philander is since the latter is a better bowler. But neither of them is ATG.

Let it be clear:

Who is better in swinging conditions? - As good as Anderson is, Philander is better.
Who is better in seaming conditions? - Philander is much better.
Who is better on flat tracks? - Both are average, but I will give this to Anderson as he is comparatively better because of having more pace.

Overall, Philander is a more skilled and better bowler than Anderson, but no ATG.

Yeah a fast bowler who has taken 600 wickets is not an ATG. How about you post some stats of both the bowlers here? :inti

It'll be the same bombastic spiel about how good performances across 60 tests are worth more than consistent performance across 150 tests. Usually by people that have never held a cricket ball in their hands.

Philander is comfortably below Anderson.

Not this Anderson vs Philander nonsense debate again.

One a player, especially for a fast bowler, plays a certain no.of matches(around 50-60), longevity does not matter much. As I said, Philander was a much more skilled bowler.

Okay you want stats?

Philander averages 22.32 while Anderson does 26.79.
