Is Waqar Younis really an ATG?

A very good test bowler due to his ability to bowl pinpoint yorker at high pace at his prime but not a great one like Wasim due to not being very good with conventional swing.

Among top 50 test cricketers of all time and possibly at same level or slightly below Ravichandran Ashwin among test cricketers from Asia.

Waqar is without a doubt an ATG.

Only a complete kid or a complete ignorant would think Waqar wasn't an ATG.

He has 373 Test wickets and 413 ODI wickets. He had many remarkable performances.

this is the problem with stats.

They never show the whole story, you need to watch the game to actually understand it

Arguably the most destructive bowler ever in his peak, but with the way he bowled, it was impossible for him to have prolonged greatness. In the second half of his career, when he reinvented himself as a swing bowler, he was still very good but not as good as some of the best bowlers of his time.

In ODI cricket, Waqar is inferior bowler to Pat Cummins and Zaheer Khan because latter two have won World Cups for their team while Waqar had to get injured or dropped for Pakistan to stand a chance to qualify to World Cup Final(1992,1999).

Since winning the World Cup is a benchmark and ignorants over here claim Smith is better than ABD in ODIs for the same reason despite AB having Vivesque WC record, so by the same token, Cummins and Zak are better ODI bowler than Waqar who also has a very poor economy as per the white ball standards back in those days, it is perhaps similar to Haris Rauf economy in modern era.

Where he ranks among other ATGs is subjective but anyone who does not co sider Waqar lovingly known was Vicky The Jatt, is being incredibly disrespectful and is no true fan of the game.

A true fan of the game would NEVER insult a great player.

2015 Smith 100% is > Any era abd in odi. However longetivoty counts.

Smith after his 2015 wonder show never achieved the same benchmark in odi. He was still good from 2016-2020 in odi but he wasn't exactly someone you'd have in an atg team and he wasn't that great a batter in odi. Just a good accumulator with a 5th gear.

Overall ABD > as longetivity counts. One year means nothing.

As an overall career or just that year, he was no match to AB because AB himself had a phenomenal 2015 in ODI cricket. You have no idea probably because you started watching cricket since last few years. I was on this forum only back in 2015 and it’s been almost 10 years now.
