Manjrekar: "It was a great game of cricket. I remember Javed Miandad, after the match, came to our dressing room. It was his final game and he loves India in a different way. He wanted to beat India, of course, but once the match was over he was happy that India was one of the teams that was going through. He came in and spent some good 30 minutes with us, hugging us, and he was very emotional and he shared his emotions with us in the dressing room. I will never forget that."

I for one was crying my eyes out and couldn't stop crying for hours and hours. It took me years to get over this defeat. Infact, I don't think I have yet. I was 11 at the time, now I am 25 (nearly 26): the pain eases but never disappears.

Interesting how Miandad reflected on it, the players have a different viewpoint simply because of the friends they make in cricket and the places they visit.

:jm old man should never have played that cup.......he played for the 'record'........whats the point of that recoed now as :sachin 's equalled it and might as well break it

Yup Miandad batted horribly slowly in that match, he looked so past it. A match i would want to forget. But its history now and all forgotten, its not like India won that World Cup anyways so doesnt matter.

the only thing I remember from that match was Amir Sohail and Parsad incident,

In my heart I knew when he was talking to him that the match was lost...

It still hurts like hell because I was only 11 and in my head and heart I was convinced that we were going to successfully defend that title.

Given the team we have and given the 2003 defeat, the 1996 defeat hurts the most given the relative strengths of the teams in 1996

This what I remember from the match

Code:
Bowling O	M	R W	Econ
Waqar Younis	10	1	67	2	6.70	(1w)
Aaqib Javed	10	0	67	1	6.70	(1nb, 4w)

In particular, Waqar being smacked to all parts of the ground by Jadeja.

So you had no faith in our so called greats like Inzi Javed and Malik to chase 170 at under 5 an over with 8 wickets left?

Waqar: there was no sling in his action, it was very front-on as opposed to side on in this match, cue no reverse swing and getting hammered all over

This what I remember from the match

Please dont underestimate role our batting greats in that game.

We lost the match primarily due to Ijaz and the great Inzi flopping big time, not due to Javed's slow batting...infact Javed and Saleem Malik consolidated and brought us back into the game before losing their wicket

Ijaz and Inzamam played like idiots.

Infact one big Pakistan World Cup match I have not watched in recent times, although a dead rubber, was v bangladesh.

I heard Ijaz laughed after getting bowled!

None of our specialist batsmen got into double figure that day.

Oh yes, amazing player and love the guy: but that was clearly fixed with the injury. No way India would have won with Akram in the team!

its not faith (or lack of it in Miandad or Inzi etc), its just that this type of showing up does not suit our team, and nor a good thing per our religion. The nusrah was gone from that moment...

I still feel Jadeja's shots shattering my dreams and their revival through Anwar & Sohail flamboyant start of innings. The End was so heart breaking that i still feel sting of that defeat.

:wasim Should not be forgiven to be injured just before this match.

I WANT REVENGE. REVENGE.
:AAG REVENGE JINDABAD :AAG

Go lions go :afridi:razzaq:akhtar:gul:yk Take that revenge for US
as you must have felt the same as Pakistani Fan at the time.

:misbah I hope you will not play that reverse sweep again :)

The match was lost on a number of fronts, poor bowling by Waqar at the end of the Indian Inns, openers throwing their wickets away after a great start(it was around 70 of 7overs), Amir sohail showing that he was an idiot and nothing that he has done or said since has changed my mind about him, other batsman wilting under the pressure and Miandad batting like a 50 yr old.

We had the match won with the way Amir Sohail and Saeed Anwar batted through the first 10. It was a paltry 200 runs in 40 overs. 5 an over. Not hard. You put two guys like Misbah and Younis with 1 great hitter and you've won that match.

Instead Miandad, Inzi and co. all failed miserably. I don't blame Miandad, it was already a sinking shape when he came in to bat.

What was tough about this loss was how great a start we had from our openers. We really should have won that match after that start.

My memories of the game are...............:waqar 's wicket of Ajju and :rashid 's celebration with :waqar then :waqar 's phainty from Jadeja or lathi charge more like.........stunning start from :anwar and :aamer then his rush of blood to throw away his wicket.......:inzi :ijaz batting like amateurs :jm lookin ''after'' his average and scored 38 of 300 balls got the RR up :rashid threw his bat around hit 2 sixes.....Kumble effed our batting line up.......

Prior to this match I was strictly a baseball fan. I was 10 at the time. Now I don't miss cricket period. Not only do I watch all of Pakistan's games but I watch everything else. I now religiously play club cricket during the summers. Thank you ajay jadeja

i wasnt even born :))) so it doesnt effect me

i watched that match ball by ball..still haunts me a lot..
Akram pulled out at the last moment although he could have played with pain killer injections.
Sohail couldnt control his nerves and threw away his wicket to prasad although he was the captain.
ijaz and inzi throwing there wickets too.
i was sure that match was fixed due to what akram did.
miandad was not used properly through out the world cup by akram.miandad has always played at number 4 in his carrer but akram pushed him to number 6 in all matches.

watched the match when I was just a kid. Couldn't sleep that whole night, went in to what you call "sakta" in urdu for at least 20 minutes once the match was over.

why the hell are you guys even discussing it?

Can't you discuss anything more positive on such a festive occasion?

Inzi used to be useless in that era. Ijaz was always miss and hit. It was usually our openers who carried us. Pretty hard to believe now as since Saeed retired our openers are the passengers while middle order started carrying us. Inzi only became a great, dependable batsman when he took the captaincy. He was useless in the late 90s.

Ahh 1996 against India, most painful match, I was 13, lost my appetite n sleep that night. Never felt that way even after 1999 final or 07 final loss. They say time can heal the wound n it has healed but that wound has left a scar..Even winning this wc wont remove nasty memories of that game. But since a lot has happened in my life but Ive been loyal hater of Indian team through out :afridi

There were two turning points in India-Pakistan cricket. The first was when Javed hit a six off the last ball in Sharjah, after which followed a long run of Pakistani dominance over India. The second was the 1996 game, after which the tide was reversed.

Didn't want to discuss the occasion really, more Miandad's emotions, classy individual

That match really did break me down. Reason being that I still thought Pakistan would win the match even though India did score 280 odd.
I remember vividly that Pakistan were 86/0 after 10 overs. Saeed and Aamer just got too greedy after that, they should have consolidated for a bit.

Lets not get carried away now. Since that quarter final, We've won 42 matches against you while you've only won 33. Infact, from 1998 to 1999, we won 8 consecutive matches against you, and 18 out of 22 matches by 2000. We've always been ahead of you, and always will.:inzi

He smirked as he walked off.

Exactly!

Malik and Miandad rebuilt but then Malik got run-out at a crucial time. Then Rashid and Miandad try to rally but Rashid got out.

Miandad did what he always tried to do, that is be there till the end. The strategy of sending Miandad at 6 was flawed and he wasn't given a full run in an innings in any of the preliminary games even though he was coming back from a 2 and a half year lay off.

This is the earliest match that I can recall I was 8, watching it with my older brother and his friends. I still didn't know much about cricket then but after we won when I saw the celebration in our living room I knew we had accomplished something significant. After that match I knew we would beat Pakistan when it counts.

Can you imagine knowing you will beat your arch-rival when the pressure is on? I don't even get nervous I just know the outcome will be in our favor, I can assure you it is a amazing feeling.

head to head we may still have done well but overall as a team, they have done well in the last 15 yrs compared to us.

I remember I was taking Urdu tuitions in those days (they didn't teach Urdu at school)

after Sohail got dismissed we kept losing wickets, but my Urdu tutor said 'fikar matt karo, hum zaroor jeetenge...'

safe to say that certainly didn't happen!

was a very painful loss, only to be replaced by an even more horrific one in 1999.

I think 96 was more painful as we were eliminated. Also, this was the first time in a long while that we played in India.

Add to this that we let the game slip on many occasions. We had them under control until the last 10. People forget that Waqar bowled brilliantly for his first 8 overs. I think he only gave away 25 runs then I think 40 came off the last two.

Then we started so brilliantly and then we handed the initiative back. Each time we rebuilt we lost a wicket.

can't agree more...
plus, aamir was not thinking straight that day.

after wasim declared himself unfit, it was evident that $%^& was going to happen, so he should have given chances to the right group (miandad, rashid) instead of inzi/malik/ijaz...

what the heck miandad was doing at #6...

For me , nothing beats t20 semi final. It still hurts whereas 2007 final doesn't because I was happy that Pakistan showed some fight.

Do you seriously think Aamir decided the batting order that day?

I just wonder how much money our stars like Wasim, Ijaz, salim malik made for losing that match

well in that case im glad i missed that match becoz it wud hv been painful to watch it.

head to head we may still have done well but overall as a team, they have done well in the last 15 yrs compared to us.

They were talking about Indo-Pak games only!
Even in the period you mentioned, Pakistan seems to have done well against India!

this match was fixed, wasim, ijaz and inzi definitely made good money off this match

And your point was, the discussion is about India vs Pakistan only; for a so-called Pakistani, you have a big fetish for anything Indian?

I am yet to see a post where you do not bash Pakistan when a Pak vs India topic is being discussed. Is there something we don't know about you?

Why on earth did anyone remind anyone of this game, about the only game I almost cried, went straight to bed fell asleep, and as they say slept on it.

Miandad was kept out of the side for two years then drafted in for the world cup, when he should never of been out of the side, no thanks to Wasim!

You didn't know much about cricket but you figured THAT out? :)))

Sure mate, we believe you :)))

Yes, he's Saqlain's long lost brother

Jadeja smacked us to all parts of the ground.

But we started brilliantly,we were cruising along, the RRR was in control. Then Sohail-Prasad,and our middle-order flopped.

Very bad day at the office.

Well even tough I didn't know much I haven't been wrong have I?

You believing me or not is irrelevant to the discussion.

I remember the Rashid Latif Sixer :6

"Pin drop silence" said Imran khan (from the commentry box)

i also remember the struggle of Miandad ..... he is legend

I dont really like when people blame Sohail for the defeat. It was still a dream start. The first wicket had to fall at some point . Prasad won the personal battle but Sohail gave good enough personal contribution

I dont really like when people blame Sohail for the defeat. It was still a dream start. The first wicket had to fall at some point . Prasad won the personal battle but Sohail gave good enough personal contribution

Sohail was the captain, which people forget and it was the manner of his dismissal which even today annoys me. The guy showed that he has no brain cells.

So you had no faith in our so called greats like Inzi Javed and Malik to chase 170 at under 5 an over with 8 wickets left?

put the ijaz ahmed in that list as well.

many people still believe many of them were sold out 2 nights before the match! who got the biggest price didn't play.. i am sorry to say these stupid thing but many on the planet believe the same fairytale story for that match and i am one of them!

We lost the game due to stupidity of Sohail. He hit a boundary previous ball and did not have to try the same next ball. pretty much rest of the batting lineup crumbled under pressure. I found Inzi struggled in pretty much all the Worldcup matches against India. That game he had a life just before the ball he got out.

what battle persad won???? getting trashed in first five overs all over the park????

do you think anyother team on the planet could have lost that match after that openers stand? when you have left less than 5 per over to chase on flatest wicket when you have 9 wickets in hand and only 170 was left?

many people believe that there was something wrong with few players.. they don't want to say in straight forward like me they were sold out..

players
Wasim (didn't play for money)
inzi
Malik
Ijaj

batting line up was only left to
two openers and one old man :jm

i have been watching cricket from almost 30 years and know each and every up and down of my team.

he was best player against india, specially in india he gave the one chance and fielder in slip dropped it, but according to agreement he gave the another one to weekest bowling on the flat track!..

what was pressure when you have 100 on the board only in 10 overs and you only need 170 and with 8 wickets in hand with remaing runrate less than 5? what was the pressure???? this is joke called it pressure!

just read the justice qauyom report about fixing of that quarter final.

they are old era's aamer, asif and butt

:jm old man should never have played that cup.......he played for the 'record'........whats the point of that recoed now as :sachin 's equalled it and might as well break it

Tere muh mein Ghee Shakkar Oye :D

Oh yes, amazing player and love the guy: but that was clearly fixed with the injury.

Do explain.. how does it works to be an amazing player and a fixer at the same time ??

No way India would have won with Akram in the team!
This really seems to be the favourite past time of many Pakistanis.. Ye nahi ho sakta tha .. wo ho jaata.. aise hoyega.. dekhna..

India did won in 1999 again with him bowling.

so you mean to say we would have won the game if the match was not fixed?

what you expect else when you have 100 in only 10 overs and u full of batting line up and need only less then five per over with 8 wickets in hand and only 170 runs on the very flat track against bolwers like parsad!

you may be new cricket but u r talking with person who is watching cricket since 1983!

if aamer, aisf and butt were not caught in england and were playing worldcup and we were playing q.final again against india and mazher majeed were staying in the same hotel and offers millons do you think they would have refused to take that real currency notes? do you really think?

what you expect from salim malik and ijaz ahmed two biggest thieves one the planet.. you might not know ijaz ahmed couple of years ago swiped the big amout of innocent man and eat of all it in the name of business when went to jail and start saying i am heart patient and could be die any day!
and other salim malik waking with aussies on elevator and asking then if you would like to fix the match with us! what you can expect from these crooks? when someboy in india offers a huge amout!

Can you write this line in your signature :inti

can i ask why? have you noticed i am not telling my cricket watching experience much now a days... i have reduced it to around 12 times mostly only once a days if it is required spcially when people talk about history or very old matches... have you noticed i don't bring these kind things late games..

if you still want me to put in my signature i can go it to make happy my nice friends!

Haha, classic. Thanks for assuring everybody.

It's funny how the hurt refuses to go away.

Pakistani fans remember Bangalore.

I remember the Miandad six of the last ball with a particular despair that has never quite gone away.

1986, it was. A quarter of a freaking century.

And in my mind's eye I can still see Chetan Sharma running in, and I'm thinking they need four runs from a single ball, now way that's going to happen.

How about Misbah's shot that shook the World in the first T20 WC Finals?

THAT man alone changed the whole course of cricketing history. Had Pakistan won that match, there would have been no IPL, ICL would still be alive as a pariah of the cricketing World AND Pakistan would have had the honours of being World champions 2 times in a row.:misbah

Had pakistan lost in 2009, they would have had the honor of loosing two finals of 20-20 WC in a row.
What's the point of your post?

IPL would have come into existence anyhow, cuz BCCI wouldnt have allowed any other organization in the country to run a show.
IPL is a 20-20 league which made use of the 2007's success. The win helped, wasnt the SOLE reason for the IPL's existence.

Shukar Hai I don,t Even Know About The Cricket At That TIme probably 5 Years Old But 99 Pain final Was Much More Worst Pain Seeing On DD Metro Of India And How Indian People Celebrating Defeat Of Pakistan.....
