LONDON: Reacting to the alleged antisemitic remarks made by PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith on Tuesday said that she had left Pakistan due to such antisemitic attacks.

Taking to Twitter, Goldsmith wrote, “I left Pakistan in 2004 after a decade of antisemitic attacks by the media and politicians.” She maintained that at the time she had been receiving weekly death threats and protests outside her house in the country.

Despite the passage of over 16 years, such antisemitic attacks against her still continuing, she said.

PM Khan and Maryam traded antisemitic remarks during their recent political rallies ahead of the polls in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In his speech, talking about the pictures of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who went abroad in 2019 for treatment, attending his grandson Junaid Safdar's polo match in the UK, PM Khan said, "The poor should go to jail and the powerful get NROs and go park themselves abroad and watch their grandson’s polo match."

“The common man cannot play polo. You need a lot of money to keep a horse and play polo. So tell us where this dear grandson got this money from. It's your money" he had said.

Following his statement, Maryam also launched an antisemitic tirade and said, "He is Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, not Goldsmith’s. he’s not being raised in the lap of Jews."

Politics is a dirty game and it only seems to be devolving in Pakistan. Lately, our politicians have regressed and instead of attacking their opponents, they're going after their children.

This was the deeply disappointing takeaway from the speeches Prime Minister Imran Khan and PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz made in Kashmir over the weekend.

In his speech, the premier referenced pictures of former premier Nawaz Sharif, who went abroad in 2019 for medical treatment, attending his grandson Junaid Safdar's polo match in the UK. Junaid is the son of Maryam and Captain Safdar and was playing polo for Cambridge University.

"The poor should go to jail and the powerful get NROs (National Reconciliation Ordinance) and go park themselves abroad and watch their grandson’s polo match," Imran said in his speech.

"This grandson who is playing polo in Britain [...] I’ve met so many Kashmiris in London and Manchester, ask them what kind of person can play polo there," the premier said, not masking his disdain. "They will tell you it's a king's sport!"

He said the common man cannot play polo. "You need a lot of money to keep a horse and play polo. So tell us where this dear grandson got this money from. It's your [the people's] money!" he told the crowd.

The next day, Maryam addressed his comments about her son in her speech, but instead of taking the high road, she went even lower.

"[Junaid] is now the polo team captain and is increasing Pakistan’s respect [abroad]. [Imran] says 'that grandson' is going abroad and playing polo, he doesn’t even spare children," she jibed. "He says, 'where did he get the money to play polo'.

"I didn’t want to bring children into it, but the way you’re talking, you’re going to get a befitting reply," she said before launching into an anti-semitic tirade.

"He’s Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, not Goldsmith’s. He’s Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, he’s not being raised in the lap of Jews," she said.

There you have it — Pakistani politics at its finest.

Both statements are problematic and unnecessary but apparently that's not obvious to our politicians.

Let's start with PM Imran.

If you want to bash Nawaz Sharif for going to a polo match when he says he is too ill to return to Pakistan to face court cases against him, do it. That is where you criticism should have ended.

Dragging Nawaz's grandson into politics, for merely playing a sport, makes no sense. Imran Khan himself was a sportsman and his private life, including assets and acquaintances, were scrutinised relentlessly. His own experience with the media poking holes into his private life should teach him not to go after a young man who is neither in politics nor a professional player.

Yes, the main target of Imran's address was his political nemesis Nawaz but raising questions on where Junaid got the money to play polo from is uncalled for.

He has a father, mother and grandfather — all political figures — for you to take potshots at for their sources of income, and you have done that. So don't go after the kid thinking he's fair game just because of his family tree.

Now, on to Maryam. There's so much to unpack here.

1) Don't bring down another woman

Jemima Goldsmith (formerly Khan) has been subjected to so much hate from our people. When someone wants to take a hit at Imran Khan, Jemima and her religion inevitably become the butt of their jokes. Yes, she married a Pakistani man but even years after her divorce, she and her kids are dragged into dirty politics. She has even spoken about the hate she got from both quarters — the Islamophobes and the anti-semitics.

As a mother, and as a woman, Maryam should know better than to go after another — and that too knowing full well how Jemima has been targetted personally for her ties to Judaism.

2) Hold yourself to a higher standard

While Jemima frequently shares her thoughts on Pakistani politics on Twitter, her sons have pointedly stayed away. They have never made any public remarks about Pakistan, politics or anything really. They don't even have public social media accounts.

Ironically, Maryam in her speech even pointed out that "he (Imran) doesn't spare children", but then went on to do the same.

"He's not Goldsmith's grandson," you said, as if that is something to be ashamed of. "He’s not being raised in the lap of Jews." When you drag someone's religion into your argument, you know you've lost any credibility you ever had. Perhaps we expected more from Maryam because of her own struggles or the fact that she too was in the spotlight for being the child of a prime minister. We believed she would be above targeting children and wouldn't justify doing so just because her political opponent did the same.

3) Anti-semitism is never okay

We can't even begin to explain how uncalled for your "raised in the lap of Jews" comment was. If Imran Khan is everything you say he is, then be better. Why are you sinking to this level to one up him? Anti-semitism or any kind of hate for any religion has no place in politics and Maryam Nawaz should know that.

What kind of message does this send to the kids being raised in non-Muslim households in Pakistan? Will that be held against them? If you aspire to be a leader of this country, then know that it has people of all faith. Derogatory language regarding someone's upbringing, particularly because of their religion, is not okay.

To both of them we say, stop the petty politics and acting like children — wait, we retract the last part; children are also taught to fight fair.

Tbh I doubt most of the western media have any idea who Maryam Nawaz is. SMQ's comments got mileage only because he was Pakistan's foreign minister. If he had said the same to PTV instead of CNN or Fox, I doubt if it would have made the headlines in the west.

If she had said the same while being the PM though, that would've been an entirely different matter. She would've been castigated by the western media.
 
Maryam Nawaz has to be the most dumb and incompetent woman leader. She really has a low IQ! She is the same person who stole $60 million grant meant for female education.
 
May it never happen but if by some turn of events she becomes PM in the future, these words will haunt her and PK on international forums . This cretinous women needs to be in jail

Where did Imran Khan make any anti-Semitic remarks? I have read through the statements and couldn't find any. Did I miss something?
 
In the latest turn of events in the war of words between Prime Minister Imran Khan and PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, which drew in the premier's ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith at one juncture, Maryam said to Jemima "you have only your ex to blame".

The chain of events began with PM Imran Khan criticising how the poor are jailed in Pakistan and the powerful "get an NRO and go abroad and watch their grandson play polo", during an address to an election campaign rally in Bhimbar, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It was a jibe at Nawaz Sharif who recently went to watch a polo match played by his grandson and Maryam Nawaz's son, Junaid Safdar, in the English town of Windsor.

At this, Maryam responded during her own AJK rally by saying Junaid Safdar is "Nawaz Sharif’s grandson, not Goldsmith’s".

"He’s Nawaz Sharif’s grandson. He’s not being raised in the lap of Jews," Maryam said.

Jemima, in response, said: “I left Pakistan in 2004 after a decade of antisemitic attacks by the media and politicians.”

The premier's ex-wife said that at the time she had been receiving weekly death threats and protests outside her house in the country.

She regretted that despite the passage of over 16 years, such antisemitic attacks against her were still continuing.

At this, Maryam, in her latest tweet, replied by saying: "I have absolutely no interest in you, your sons, or your personal lives because I have better things to do and say but if your ex drags in families of others out of spite, others will have nastier things to say.

"You have only your ex to blame," she added.

I get that Maryam might have took offence to Nawaz's grandson being dragged into it, but the initial report is saying that he has been trading anti-semitic insults with Maryam, when clearly those have come only from her. That's really shoddy reporting, and no excuse for it.

Dawn was a respected newspaper but has lost all respect and accuracy. Its been the case since its editor was accused of raping some guy.
 
All IK can do is make speeches against Nawaz. He has been unable to take proper action against him.

Lolz. IK is not an all powerful dictator. He has presented the evidence against Nawaz Shareef and his den of thieves. In the end, it all depends on judiciary system to convict criminals.

IK doesnt need to attack anyones faith. Hindutva Modi is present yet IK has never attacked Hindus but has clearly stated this ideology is an extremist one, not a Hindu one.

Maryam wont become leader, so this wont come back to bite her. In a decade or so, she will be behind bars too.

Nawaz is enjoying his millions in the UK, that is what he is doing. What has Modi or Hinduism got to do with this? You are avoiding the crucial point that Nawaz is not behind bars neither has his wealth been seized. IK is all cheap talk, that's all.

Yes. The biggest NRO in Pakistan’ s history was given by Imran by escorting Nawaz to a London-bound plane. After harping on about corruption for 25 years and winning the election on the back of his anti-Nawaz rhetoric, Imran was manhandled like a kid by Nawaz and the Sher left with style for London. Imran is all talk. When it comes to action, he crumbles because he has a jelly spine!

You're a top poster so I'm surprised you're being this naive.

PMLN represents a major threat to PTI in terms of being in power in the center and Imran Khan in any election, despite Nawaz being England Imran Khan knows PTI's position isn't safe till PMLN is knocked out of action or till PMLN is weak enough.

PPP and Zardari provide no such threat and are limited to Sindh and politically can be dealt with once PMLN are dealt with.

I'm glad Imran Khan is for once being ruthless and savvy. PPP are no threat to PTI in the center but PMLN are. He can't take both of them on and deal with the mess the nation is in.

Most Muslim's do not understand the difference between Jews and Zionists. Islam has never been anti-Semitic. Muslim's and Jews lived together peacefully for centuries prior to the birth of Israel. Maryam probably realises this but uses the Jewish card knowing Pak people are illiterate with no historical understanding of Muslim-Jewish relations.

Well Zadari is in pakistan and lives a free life right now, what happened to his 'mein choro ko ni choru ga'

ofcourse theres been some statemnets here and there and against zadari, but its only for show, hes never gone after him, Zadaris corruption is tens time more than NS, so if he can put NS in jail why is Zadari free?

This is exactly what i said he has no interest in cleaning corruption, hes just clearing the opposition to him to get to power.

However pmln has become quite worthless now and ppp are favorites to win the next election, so khan hasnt played his cards right. When ppp messes up, people will look again towards NS and not IK.

PPP are not favourites to win anywhere. The only place they are favourites to win is Sindh, otherwise everywhere else they've completely either scaled back or have been routed.

PTI has interest in clearing corruption, as that's the only reason people voted for them or gave them support. PMLN was far more corrupt and easier to go after since Nawaz isn't known for his intelligence. And the court and his defense showed that. Zardari is a completely different ball game in how he has evaded charges or how he has slipped away.

I can't believe I am having to explain this to you.

I dislike and hate the nonsense Imran Khan utters now and then, esp the rape comments, and if there was a better party with bigger appeal I wouldn't give PTI my vote. But there is absolutely no way I'd ever give PMLN or PPP a vote if Imran Khan is alive and contesting.

I can't believe anyone with even basic knowledge of Pakistan would think PPP would win a national election now.

They've been decimated in every area except Sindh, outside Sindh they have had either no candidates or have been forced to ally with PMLN for seats vs PTI. The same PMLN who would distribute fake nude pictures of Benazir. Even in Sindh they were hurt in Ladkana last time, they're finished outside Sindh and even in Sindh they are fighting for every seat.

winning the election doesnt mean winning every seat or getting a majority.

Its this that i should say i cant believe i have to explain to you!

PPP can come to power in the same fashion they have done in the past, all they need to do is create alliances, they will get those in the same way they got to power in 2008, almost all parties want PTI gone, and will form another alliance, zadari is a suave negotiator and will make sure ppp is at the centre of it.
Ofcourse they wont win a majority all alone.

Are you for real! Nawaz is a complete embarrassment, a corrupt buffoon who didn't have the decency to attend his mother's funeral knowing well if I step back in to the country I will be behind bars for the rest of his life.

As for his current situation in the uk, the guy is getting verbally abused by every tom dick and harry he comes across. The guy has zero self respect.

Where did i support Nawaz or say he was not corrupt? What I am saying is IK's promises of sending him behind bars were false.
