Joe Root was drawn into a war of words with old mentor and former England captain Michael Vaughan following his team’s crushing 340-run defeat by South Africa in the second Test.

England’s current captain was visibly angered when asked what he thought of Vaughan’s assessment that his team do not “respect” Test cricket after they were bowled out for 133 on the fourth and final day at Trent Bridge.

In all, the hosts batted for just 96.2 overs across the match, one ball fewer than South Africa’s first innings, as they slipped to their eighth defeat in 13 Tests.

“The England batting has been appalling,” Vaughan said on the BBC’s Test Match Special. “Maybe it’s a lack of respect about what the game is. They look like they are playing a Twenty20 game.”

But a shell-shocked Root, captaining England in just his second Test, was unimpressed with those comments from a man he has known since he was a child and who played alongside his father, Matt, for the Sheffield Collegiate club.

“I think that’s very unfair - I can’t believe he’s actually said that to be honest,” said Root.

“We pride ourselves on winning series like this and unfortunately we’ve played poorly this week but the most important thing now is to respond well and make sure we put it right [in next week’s third Test] at The Oval.”

Vaughan was not alone in his criticism, with another former England captain in Nasser Hussain lamenting the “rubbish brand of cricket” this current team are playing right now.

“I want to see people value their wicket,” said Hussain. “If people bowl well, acknowledge it, don’t say ‘we're trying to play a positive brand of cricket'. A score of 133 all out is a rubbish brand of cricket - they are not showing a steely side, something South Africa’s No3, Hashim Amla, has in abundance."

With the series now locked at 1-1 heading into the final two Tests, England must find an answer to the inconsistency that has seen them follow a victory with a defeat on seven occasions since the summer of 2015.

The Lord’s Test, Root’s first match as captain, saw England wrap up a comprehensive 211-run win against South Africa.

But, after this shambolic defeat, he said: “I can’t put my finger on it. I look at the talent in the dressing room and the players we have and it shouldn’t happen like that. It’s something we’ve spoken about and we want to make sure we put it right. That all starts with how we prepare leading into the next Test.”

Changes will surely be considered for that match at The Oval next week, with top-order batsmen Keaton Jennings, Gary Ballance - who scored seven runs between them during England’s second innings - and left-arm spinner Liam Dawson the most vulnerable.

Root said: “We will sit down over the next couple of days. After Lord’s it happened quite quickly which is when we sat down [with the selectors] and decided the squad for this game. It might take a bit longer in terms of getting us all together in the same room, that will be decided when we all catch up.”

Ballance’s participation at The Oval might be in doubt anyway after he was hit on the hand by Morne Morkel on the final day. The Yorkshire batsman has had scans on his left index finger and the results of those are likely to be known overnight.

South Africa captain Faf Du Plessis, meanwhile, hailed Vernon Philander as the new Jacques Kallis after the all-rounder’s five wickets and 96 runs with the bat earned him the man of the match award.

“He’s becoming the new Jacques Kallis the way he’s batting,” said Du Plessis. “His technique is getting very similar.

“He’s a fantastic cricketer. When there’s something there , he’s probably the best in the world at doing something with it.”

Can actually see where Vaughan is coming from. I guess that's the downside of having a very attacking captain that wants to attack his opposition, no matter the match situation.

That being said some of the bowling by Philander, Morkel and Maharaj was terrific too.

Joe Root shocked at Michael Vaughan's comments following England's defeat

Nottingham: Joe Root was stunned by former England captain Michael Vaughan‘s assertion that his side had failed to respect Test cricket during their thumping 340-run defeat by South Africa at Trent Bridge. Ashes-winning skipper Vaughan, now a commentator with BBC Radio’s Test Match Special, made his stinging comments as England lost seven first-innings wickets for 62 runs to be bowled out in little more than 50 overs for 205 in reply to the Proteas’ 335. Root’s 78 was the only fifty in a meagre total that left England well behind in the game. “The England batting has been appalling,” said Vaughan, who played alongside Root’s father Matt at the Sheffield Collegiate Club in Yorkshire and has been a friend of the family since Joe was a boy.

“Maybe it’s a lack of respect about what the game is,” said Vaughan, one of the leading Test batsmen of his era. “They look like they are playing a Twenty20 game. They have this approach of attack, attack, attack. There is no thought or feeling of seeing off a bowler or wearing a team down.” England’s second innings was even worse, with Root’s men bowled out for just 133 in pursuit of a world-record target of 474 with more than a day to spare on Monday as South Africa levelled the four-match series at 1-1.

This was England’s sixth defeat in their last eight Tests and Root, in charge for just the most recent two, was taken aback by mentor Vaughan’s comments. “I think that’s very unfair — I can’t believe he’s actually said that. We pride ourselves on winning series like this, and unfortunately we’ve played poorly this week,” Root added. But the Yorkshireman accepted his side ought to be able to bat in different styles according to the match situation, whatever the individual preferences of particular players. Hussain slams ENG for ‘abysmal’ Test team selection vs SA

“We need to make sure we learn quickly … [so that] if we are in a similar situation [in the third Test] at The Oval, for example, we play it slightly smarter,” said Root. “Part of Test cricket is trying to find a balance of both (attack and defence) — and even if it’s not your strength, you build it into your natural game,” he added. “You have periods where you can absorb a bit of pressure and find the right moment to apply it when chances come along. We are capable of doing it and have done it previously, but this wasn’t a very good example of it.”

Meanwhile the 26-year-old Root, who led England to a 211 -run series opening win at Lord’s in his first Test as skipper, said this huge loss had been a chastening experience. “I definitely feel older — it’s been a tough week,” he conceded. “South Africa responded very well from Lord’s — and especially with the bat, we didn’t assess the situation well enough in the first innings. After that, we couldn’t find a way to get back into the game.”

The star batsman added: “We’re a side that doesn’t like giving anything away, and unfortunately today that wasn’t a fair representation of how good we are as a team.” By contrast, just about everything went right for Root’s opposing captain Faf du Plessis, who did not play at Lord’s following the birth of his first child. “Pretty much from the toss through to the last ball we bowled, we were in control of the Test match,” said du Plessis. England number three batsman Gary Ballance, out for just four on Monday, was due to have an X-ray on his left index finger after being struck by a Morne Morkel short ball.

Some one tell Root that, Poms in total played 96'1 overs for 20 wickets - that' theoretically taking extended 30 minutes, they were all out twice in a day; something happens to be 19th century staff in Test cricket.

cant disagree with Vaughn here. They were terrible. With all of the coaching, money, setup, playing at home etc etc, its pathetic they did this..

Aww Are you upset Baby Root :mv These comments are from the newly appointed England captain "I am Shocked" :yk3

I tell you what's shocking, the appointment of Root as captain and England's dreadful performance.

Root looked out of his depth as a captain. Looked like a kid. Lacked authority. Clueless about DRS. I'm not saying that he is a rubbish captain as it is too early. Just saying that he doesn't "look captaincy material".

Vaughan's absolutely right. There's no reason for an accomplished Test team to be all out for 133 when two full days of cricket are left and hardly treacherous conditions to battle. England should be ashamed of themselves.

Vaughan is right, to not play even 100 overs across two innings of a Test is unacceptable.

Positivity and aggression is all well and good but you also need to respect the opposition attacks, and be willing to graft when necessary.
