Jos Buttler believes he and Dom Bess have given England realistic hope of an unlikely victory after their game-changing century partnership in the first NatWest Test.

Joe Root’s hosts were booked for a miserable defeat inside three days, probably by an innings, when Buttler (66no) and debutant Bess (55no) joined forces still 69 runs in arrears on a second-innings 110 for six.

But they gave the Lord’s crowd, and home dressing-room, a much-needed lift with an unbroken stand which took England to 235 at stumps against Pakistan.

The lead is still only 56 after a woeful start to this series opener for the hosts.

Buttler, fresh back from the Indian Premier League for his first Test in 18 months, and 20-year-old Bess defied all expectations – batting through the evening session after Root’s dismissal for 68 completed a damaging sequence of four wickets for the addition of just 19 runs.

“Of course there is (belief we can win),” said Buttler.

“The atmosphere in the ground was great there at the end, and of course in the dressing-room as well.

“A fourth-innings score, chasing down a total, is never going to be easy – if we can get our way up to a challenging total.”

With the resourceful and confident Bess for company, he is prepared to aim high too.

“Tomorrow we need to make it as big as we can,” Buttler added.

“One hundred and 50 would be great, (but) we’d probably be trying to think more like 200.

“I know that’s a lot more runs, but 200 in the fourth innings will be tough. If it’s 150, that’s going to have to be enough.”

Buttler never met Bess before he left Somerset for Lancashire five years ago, but has since been kept up to speed about the youngster’s developing all-round talent during his rapid rise through the ranks at Taunton.

“I haven’t seen him bat much, but I’ve heard a lot about his batting from the guys at Somerset,” he said.

“He can obviously bat. It was a bit like Joe Root, some of those back-foot punches and cover-drives.”

That is high praise indeed, although perhaps Bess’ most important quality is the optimistic can-do attitude which had him dropping broad hints at a pre-match press conference about possible IKEA endorsements – after new national selector Ed Smith interrupted his furniture shopping last week to tell him of a surprise maiden Test call-up.

Buttler said: “You certainly wouldn’t think it’s his first game, trying to get a free sofa from IKEA, and all that!

“He’s really taken to it. He’s got a great character, and I think he really loves the competition.

“He’s got some really good attributes, which you need in international cricket.”

Bess demonstrated many of them, including a very workable technique.

“We were both just trying to scrap hard for the side,” his senior partner added.

“He’s got a lot of fight, and he was trying to show that – and for me, being back in the side, I was showing how much it means to be out there.”

Pakistan still appear to be well ahead of the game, but are wary of England.

Key batsman Asad Shafiq said: “We won’t be happy to chase anything over 150.

“I don’t think we did anything wrong.

“We should give credit to the English batsmen, especially the debutant.

“He played really well, and the way he and Buttler battled gave them a really good partnership.”

I'm really worried. I'd rather be in England's camp right now :(

I sense nerves in Pakistan camp and I feel like they will create chance early tomorrow drop that and become completely demoralized

Guys relax. Eng are 56 for 6. They have to start all over again vs a NEW BALL. Abbasif and Amir will take care of this.

They have to strike in first hour or we are doomed

We WILL STRIKE for sure.
At some point ENG would of course fight back. Its ENG at HOME. In a way this is good for this young PAK team. The last session was a hard one. True test cricket. Playing in such situations will make them much much better.

Tomorrow around lunch we will hit the winning runs.

Anything over 120-30 is dangerous a bad start can lead to 20-2 40-3 type scenario where pressure can do strange things.
Game should've been wrapped up now it's not over.

Teams have won Test matches from poorer positions than this. It is relatively rare to see such dramatic turnarounds though. Usually the team that was behind the pace from Day 1 ends up losing in the end.

A bit far fetched to think England can win with a lead of just 54 and only 4 wickets left.

It's a terrific fight back and everything I love about test cricket but it is not enough. Pakistan will be fresh, are 2 overs away from the new ball and the pitch will only turn more, unless he rains A LOT. This is still Pakistan's game to lose.

Obviously he has to say this, he's playing for the poms what else can he say. But reality is no team has lost a test at Lords once they have a lead of 175 - England is against 150+ years of history and don't look like a team that can change it

Eng is 4 wickets away from finishing this inning and so far has only 50 odd runs lead. Pakistan will get new ball and win it easily. Pakistan has to bowl poorly to not win easily from here. Adding 60-70 runs will be very difficult with new ball and even that will be an easy target.

Game in bag for Pakistan.

England are effectively 56/6 with a new ball facing them In 2 overs.

Buttler and the new kid played very well to get them out of deep trouble at 111/6.

Now for England to set anything competitive they need to score another 100 runs. It’s possible but Pakistan just need one early wicket and then I reckon target will be 120 max.

Anyway this pitch is no minefield - 200 can be chased but we know Pakistan has an inexperienced batting line up so the less the better. And they are one batsman down as well.

Lots of High Hopes and Luck talk today !!! Fact is, no one can predict what will happen .... that is why the Test Match Cricket is the very Best !!!! I still like our chances tomorrow with the New Ball and all, also, most fortunately, the Time Factor is Not existing. So .... it is on to tomorrow .... may we win handily !!!!

The end of the day couldn’t have come quicker for Pakistan. I think tomorrow they’ll be fresher and with the new ball hopefully we can get them out for under 120.

After Bess they don’t really have any batters so I expect for us to really attack the new batsmen.

Buttler wicket is crucial.

no need to panic. They have lead of 56 only not 156. Need to get them under 150.I m pretty optimistic! 99% chance of winning this one.

One more wicket and the rest will fall inside 10 runs... yeh tou humaray boys thak gaye thay warna ab tak match khatum ho chuka hota

Love the optimism from buttler but, this test is going only in one direction. A lead of 120 at best is what England can muster unless Pakistan goes back to its old ways of dropping sitters.
England should be ashamed for such a shambolic performance in their own turf. They have been humiliated by a fledgling Pakistani side.

Pak are form favs to win this still.

If England survive the first hour and the lead swells to 100/6, then it can become anybody’s game.

Pak are still 90-10 favs to win this. One wicket will open the flood gates.

Didn't Bairstow make some stupid comment like this before as well, Irish did the same and lol everytime some comment like this, next day they are done and dusted.

Seems more likely to be a Pak summer?

Pakistan should be winner. New ball is there , I do not see pakistan chasing that big target

Well played, Buttler and Bess.

Where are the padosi who were arguing that Jos Buttler will never be able to become a test class level batsmen?

You said Buttler would destroy our attack. All he did was knock a few runs about against tired bowlers in the evening.

Butler still hasn't really shown he's a test match batsmen. His 50 came on a very flat track, old ball and tired bowlers.

England need to stop picking T20 players just because they are 'good guys'. What is even worse is Bairstow who was improving taking the gloves while Butler who can keep didn't.

What would one expect him to say, 'We'll get out cheaply tomorrow and give a walkover to Pakistan'? Always have to put on a brave face no matter the adversity.

I never said he will destroy any attack. He is too mediocre for that at this point of time. In the first inning, him and Stokes was getting some quick runs and I said if these two get going they will demoralize the attack because they score runs fast.

Tired bowlers in 2nd inning?? 110/6 with the best batsmen just gone. You are on top and pressure is huge for a young batsmen to make a place for his side. Definitely a very good inning but he needs to score more on a consistent basis obviously.

Why is that even worse? Surely you want your best keeper keeping?

There isn't much between them. Bairstow is the much better batsmen in test cricket, he's shown a lot of potential to improve. If I was coach I would give him every chance of improving even more and taking the gloves of him gives him this chance.

Bairstow's a far better keeper nowadays. When he came into the side he was very average with the gloves but he's clearly worked on it a lot and is very good now. He's also very keen to carry on keeping.

Ab bolo.
Told you bro.

Well I was wrong. Well done Pakistan, so happy right now, beaming smile on my face :)

Unfortunately Buttler couldn't walk the talk. Pakistan made it look so easy in the end.
