Journalist Matiullah Jan released 12 hours after being abducted from Islamabad

The judges actually gave a fair verdict but this loser attacked a fair verdict as he is a mafia employee. What is wrong with the SC asking one of their own to provide a money trail for properties worth millions. He accused them of being cowards for asking for a money trail. The whole thing is fishy and like with Gul Bhukaris disappearance and Maryams team disappearing after the bye election in 2017, this is dramabaazi.

He accused them of being cowards because non of them have ever asked any general about money trails. You know, the people who actually run the country and do the most corruption.

Not true. Post the tweet here and you will see that what you aew saying is rubbish. @Mods can you please embed the tweet here please. The guy is Isa's mouthpiece and a crook.

He was aspirant of the same plots and other privileges for which he is criticizing generals. His issue is that he was unceremoniously kicked out from army and from that day onwards he is busy settling scores.

He attacks anyone that attacks the mafia. From memory he attacked CJP Nisar as well.

Truth will never come out. All parties have something to twist this their way.

intersting how Mamoon couldn't answer why and how Journalist shared his Twitter password with his son ?
If their is no explanation, that weakens the case of one party.

Hey you haven't hash tagged your friend...

I don't support the same party as him. All views are my own, so nothing more to it than that.

But it must be said that this post sums up the mentality of PTI supporters, as they're always diverting the attention away from the flaws of their leader and trying to score points over petty matters.

Lol you either have to be a complete imbecile or a corrupt thief to be questioning the mentality of a party and a party leader who has only been in power for two years... that’s coming after decades of looting and corruption...

So every time the likes of you, and it happens very often, come out with the “cult” PTI supporter rubbish I chuckle, because it actually shows your mentality...

It’s funny how people can happily live with the land grabbers, utility and food mafias stealing from the poor when their leaders are in power but when someone who strived for his country for 22 years comes in, you give don’t even give him half a term to see what he can achieve.

What’s the big deal if his son knows his password? A lot of people have a generic password across platforms for simplicity, and their children often know about it.

I also know my mother’s Facebook and email passwords because I set up the accounts for her years ago.

But enough for all parties to blame other and truth will probably never come out.

This is a sad thread to read through. There is no longer an independent press in PK, never was. It's depressing news for the bold journalists in Pakistan. Toe the line or perish.

What is very clear is that Jan is the mouthpiece of Isa. It was Isa attacking the SC, not Jan. I hope the judges realise who threatens their independence, and its non other than their crooked colleague.

While the press was never completely free, the press is more free than ever in Pakistan. The current goverment has been trashed non stop for the last 2 years. The government is not responsible for this abduction.

And this is not the first abduction that has happened to a journalist. However this one has received non stop coverage, which is a credit to the environment the current government has created.

I remember somebody said the press in Pakistan was more free than the UK.

Yes, you're right. I watch too much western media. The Uighurs are completely free. There is no censorship in China. There was no one child policy in China. There is no Christian persecution in China where Catholics are forced to join state-sanctioned churches and clergy who refuse are detained. There was no pressure and government control on Larung Gar Tibetan Buddhist Academy. Nothing happened in Tibet. Nothing is happening in Hong Kong.

Everything is just a figment of Western Media's imagination. China is a brilliant non-censoring religious tolerant free state!

You said there are no freedoms in china whatsoever, you are wrong. Not interested in any sort of discussion with you.

There is no discussion. We may have had a discussion if there was something to debate about. There is no debate as I'm right and you do not have any logical answers.

Didn't this government throw a prominent media owner into jail ? There are many articles that describe how media freedom has declined under Imran era.

In any case, the true test of an independent media is how much it is able to criticise the real power centres in a country, which in Pakistan's case is the army. No media is able to touch them. Political parties like PTI or PPMLN are the low hanging fruit.

That has more to do with power of social media than government's influence, I would say. I remember another journalist Gul B being abducted and released during Nawaz Sharif's rule.

Not sure about that case, but in general the reason that the media hates Imran Khan is that he reduced the goverment advertising for media. This has led to people losing jobs, reduced salaries, and some channels have closed. The media in Pakistan was dependent on this subsidy, and so they have been hurt. However they are not entitled to it, and they have no restriction on criticizing the Civilian government.

Yes that's true. There are significant restrictions on mentioning them by name. However in Pakistan a term called the "establishment", is used to criticize them and their policies in the media. Everyone from a PHD to a rickshaw wallah knows what is meant by "Establishment". Even then there can still be some restrictions, however people in Pakistan for the most part have a good idea on things that they are responsible for.

Social media plays a big role, because you can intimidate the owner of a tv channel, or newspaper, but there are too many people on social media to silence. However mainstream media has given this particular case more attention than any of the other abductions. Maybe because its one too many. Maybe because they lost funding they dont care about the "red lines".

That prominent media ownef was illegally alloted plots by NS. Its fact he owns them and they were bribes. Why shouldn't he go to jail.
PK is not like Ind, we have a press that is not only free but blackmailing. We don't have a press that declares victory in wars and can't bring itself to even have a debate. You need to be asking for a free press in Ind, PK's press is free, if you dont just watch Geo etc.

ISLAMABAD: As the Supreme Court resumes hearing a contempt of court case against senior journalist Matiullah Jan on Thursday (today), the capital police furnished a report conceding that they are still waiting for replies from different departments the assistance of which they had sought to unearth the kidnapping incidence of the journalist.

“But efforts are under way to trace the culprits involved in the incident and in this regard the reports of various departments is awaited to carry out further investigations,” stated the 52-page report furnished before the Supreme Court on Wednesday by the deputy inspector general (operations) on behalf of Inspector General of Islamabad Amir Zulfikar Khan.

In its last order issued on July 22, a three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed had ordered recording by the relevant police station of the statement of Matiullah Jan about the kidnapping incident.

Matiullah Jan was kidnapped from Islamabad on broad daylight on July 21 — a day ahead of his appearance before the Supreme Court in the contempt of court case — but was released in the midnight after a hue and cry raised by journalists, civil society members, human rights organisations and different political parties.

In its report, the Islamabad police stated that a five-member special investigation team (SIT) headed by the superintendent police (investigations) was probing the abduction incident, adding that police had soon after the kidnapping of the journalist approached the Ministry of Defence with a request to ascertain his whereabouts from the Intelligence Bureau, Military Intelligence and Inter-Services Intelligence so that investigation could be concluded on merits.

Apex court resumes contempt hearing against Matiullah Jan today

According to the report, the investigating officer also sent letters to all hospitals in the federal capital, Edhi centres, the health secretary, in-charge press club, inspectors general of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Baluchistan and AJK, Pakistan Railways and the secretary Fata and prisons with a request to ask their respective staff to check the record of their respective organisations and if any fruitful information was found then informed the local police for further legal action in accordance with the law.

The report stated that written directives were also sent to the superintendent police (investigations) for conducting geo-fencing of the place of occurrence to trace the kidnappers. Moreover, it added, all police stations of the adjoining districts were asked through wireless messages to check if the journalist was involved or arrested in any criminal case in their area of jurisdiction, but as per reports the journalist was neither involved in any criminal case nor arrested by any local police.

The report said a written request was also sent to the quarters concerned for obtaining CDR of mobile phone number of the journalist, in addition to a written request to the director of Safe City Project for provision of CCTV footage of the place of occurrence, which is still under process.

The report explained that the CCTV footage of the alleged suspects was also sent to the National Database and Registration Authority on July 24 for matching of the suspects or their particulars, which is still under process. It said verbal directives as well as written orders had also been issued to the SIT members to peruse the FIR and case file to ensure apprehension of the culprits involved in the crime without further delay.

Police had assured that all possible resources would be utilised to locate and arrest the accused involved in the crime and no stone would be left unturned in this regard, the report said, adding that the SIT members had been directed to apprise the authorities concerned of the progress in investigation into the incident on a daily basis.

The report stated that the police department and SIT members were in close contact with the victim and other relevant departments and every effort would be made to take the case to its logical end.

Committee to Protect Journalists, HRCP demand journalist Matiullah Jan’s release after reported arrest

Several journalists and rights activists voiced their concerns on Thursday after senior journalist Matiullah Jan was reportedly arrested in a case pertaining to the PTI’s recent Islamabad protest.

Senior anchor and Dawn columnist Arifa Noor said on social media platform X that she spoke with journalist Asad Toor, according to whom Jan had been booked in a case against top PTI leadership and others for their November 24 rally.

While Noor had said Jan was being detained at Islamabad’s Margalla Police Station, in a later post, human rights lawyer Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir said she visited the police station but the journalist was “missing”.

“After pleading with police at Margalla Police Station to allow us access to our client Matiullah Jan, we were finally allowed in,” Imaan said on X.

The lawyer said she checked the lock-up herself and the “people locked up inside confirmed to me that right before we came, the police took Matiullah Jan. He is missing”.

A post on Jan’s X account at 5:09am, seemingly made by his son, read: “Matiullah Jan has been abducted from the parking of Pims tonight at around 11pm by unmarked abductors in an unmarked vehicle.”

Referring to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), the post had also said that journalist Saqib Bashir was also allegedly abducted but was “let go five minutes later”.

“This follows [Jan’s] courageous coverage of the protests in Islamabad,” the post highlighted.

“I demand that my father be let go immediately and his family immediately be informed of his whereabouts.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also expressed grave alarm over “reports of the abduction” of Jan, noting it followed “his coverage of protests by supporters of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan”.

“Authorities must ensure Jan’s safety and immediate release,” the CJP asserted in a post on X.

“We call for a swift and impartial investigation into the incident and accountability for all perpetrators.”

The journalists’ body went on to confirm that Bashir had been released.

Referring to a similar case of the senior journalist, the CPJ said “complete impunity persists for Jan’s previous abduction in 2020”.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan demanded Jan’s “immediate and unconditional release”, noting he had “reportedly been arrested following his coverage of the recent protests in Islamabad”.

This authoritarian tactic to silence journalists must cease,“ the HRCP asserted.

Digital rights activist Usama Khilji claimed Jan had been “forcibly disappeared for investigating the truth behind the killing of civilians in Islamabad at the PTI protest”.

“Journalism is not a crime,” he stated, urging Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to “release” him immediately.

In another post, Khilji wondered: “How can a journalist be charged for a protest that he is reporting on?”

“This is an absolutely bogus case in totality,” the activist added.

IHC suspends journalist Matiullah Jan’s physical remand in narcotics case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday suspended the two-day physical remand of senior journalist Matiullah Jan in a terrorism and narcotics case that was widely derided as being “bogus” on “trumped up charges” amid demands for his release.

Jan was booked in the case on Thursday after reportedly being detained in Islamabad on Wednesday night. His son said “unknown individuals” had abducted the journalist, before authorities confirmed filing a first information report (FIR) on Thursday.

Later in the day, Jan was presented in the Rawalpindi Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) where Judge Tahir Abbas Sipra granted the police Jan’s two-day physical remand, denying their request for a 30-day custody.

Today, IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir took up a petition filed by Jan’s counsels in the morning.

Advocates Imaan Zainab Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha appeared before the court today as Jan’s lawyers.

In a post on X, Imaan had said she has requested for the petition to be fixed for hearing today considering the “urgency of the matter”.

Imaan said a bail petition for Jan would also be filed today. IHC Bar Association (IHCBA) President Riasat Ali Azad was present during the hearing as well.

At the outset of the hearing, the ATC’s order was read out on the court’s directives.

“Matiullah Jan was arrested in a false and fabricated case,” Imaan contended before the court.

“We request that the hearing on the petition against his physical remand be held today. If it is held tomorrow or on Monday it will be useless.”

Meanwhile, IHCBA’s Azad told the court that an affidavit by Saqib Bashir, another journalist briefly detained yesterday, was available.

“This case is a baseless story based on lies,” Azad said. The court removed the objections to the petition.

During the hearing, the IHCBA president pointed out that the FIR against the journalist “had no mention of buying or selling [narcotics]”.

Subsequently, the judges ordered the suspension of Jan’s physical remand and that he be sent on judicial remand.

Amid reports of Jan’s arrest a day ago, rights bodies and the journalism fraternity voiced their concerns and demanded his release.

Human rights organisation Amnesty International said Jan’s “arbitrary detention” on “trumped up charges” was “an affront on the right to freedom of expression and media freedom”.

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed grave alarm over “reports of the abduction” of Jan, noting it followed “his coverage of protests by supporters of imprisoned former prime minister Imran Khan”.

The FIR

On Thursday, Jan’s son Abdul Razzaq alleged his father was abducted from the parking lot of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) the night before by unknown individuals.

However, it later emerged that the anchor had been booked in a terrorism case, which also included charges of possessing narcotics. The FIR, a copy of which is available with Dawn.com, was filed by the Margalla police on the complaint of Superintendent of Police Asif Ali.

The FIR claimed that Jan was found possessing 246 grams of narcotic methamphetamine (crystal meth) when his vehicle was stopped at E-9 in the federal capital.

The case was registered at 3:20am on Thursday, nearly an hour after the alleged incident took place.

The provision invoked from the Control of Narcotic Substances Act (CNSA) 1997 is Section 9(2)4, which specifies the punishment for possessing or trafficking “more than 100g and up to 500g” of psychotropic substance.

The FIR also invoked Sections 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 as well as Sections 186 (obstructing public servant), 279 (Rash driving or riding on a public way), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs50) and 506ii (threat to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

According to the FIR, a white Toyota Yaris car was rapidly moving towards Islamabad’s F-10, when it was signalled to stop at a checkpost at E-9. However, the driver, who the FIR said later identified himself as Jan, “rammed the vehicle with the intention to hit the workers, injuring Constable Mudassir.

The FIR added that when the vehicle managed to stop due to a barrier, the driver stepped out of the car and “assaulted” the constable, then snatched his SMG rifle and pointed it back at the cop. When the police recovered the rifle, the complaint said, the driver was inquired about his identity, which he revealed as Matiullah Jan.

Upon a cursory look, Jan was found under the influence of a narcotic, the FIR alleged. It further claimed that a check of Jan’s car was conducted, during which a bag containing “white ice” (crystal meth) was found from under the driver’s seat.

The substance was then weighed on an electronic scale and a sample of 1g was taken from the 246g for chemical examination, it added. The FIR stated that Jan’s car was taken into police custody.
