No one watches cricket in Europe: Kevin de Bruyne

Manchester City footballer Kevin De Bruyne has claimed that no one watches cricket in Europe. Speaking on a game show in England, the midfielder was left stunned that cricket was the second most-watched sport in the continent.

Playing a game show called AI Showdown, De Bruyne had to answer the 5 most popular sports in Europe. After the player struggled, the presenter revealed that football, cricket, basketball, tennis, and Formula 1 were respectively the most-watched sports in the European continent.

The revelation left De Bruyne stunned, leaving the game show host in splits.

"How can cricket be second on the list? That’s a lie," a visibly startled De Bruyne said.

"I don’t know anybody in Europe who watches cricket, let’s be honest," the Manchester City star added.

Once the presenter affirmed the results once again, De Bruyne could not believe what he was hearing and once again asked: "Who? European people? No."

"Yeah, I watch everything else except cricket," De Bruyne had fans in the studio laughing with his responses.

Manchester City's star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne recently announced his exit from the club at the end of this season. De Bruyne joined City in 2015 and won 6 Premier League titles with them, establishing them as one of the best sides in England.

Didn't expect this from Kevin De Bruyne. Heartbroken, I sold him from my FC Mobile team. Even my virtual squad deserves better. :inti @Bhaijaan

it’s all just Bharatiya people. No one else watches cricket bro. Shame on all other cricket nations for killing this game. Akela Bharat kya krega.

Actually the question was what were the top 5 most watched sports globally - not Europe

So cricket is at 2nd - thanks to subcontinental masses. But of course not 2nd in Europe- that wud probably be tennis

He's right though. I'm sure the replies were bombarded by diaspora desis.

Second place sport doesn't really matter in Europe when you consider how big football is.
I mean there is no debate really. Europeans don’t care for cricket barring England, maybe some Dutch but that’s after football etc. also Dutch like hockey too.

No one outside Europeans care for tennis anymore. But yes cricket is not at the top at all for Europeans.

Looks like England's pathetic run of form has given him nightmares although he is not even from England. He is Belgian actually.

LOL

England is invented cricket but only won a ICC World Cup Just few year ago.

Btw how many FIFA World Cup This player( Kevin ) has won for own national team ?

:kp

England last won a FIFA World Cup in 1966 .I don't think anyone here on PP even born at that time 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 :kp

Eye open karo.i search on google to know who is he and already posted SS . Pakistan fans and logic 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤡🤡🤡🤡 :kp
Even if i were to accept that, you could had done that few mins ago instead of making a post on who he is

Cricket is only popular amongst Desis.

Rest of the test playing countries is seeing a slow decline amongst the next generation.

Not sure what’s there to debate or why people are getting upset over what KDB said. No one cares about it in Europe apart from the desi diaspora.

The desi population is what, 1/4th of the world population now? So globally it will be a massive sport just because of the sheer amount of desis out there. But to native Europeans it’s still an alien game.

Who is Kevin de bruyne?? :kp
Honestly, I am really soccer illiterate, barely follow Indian soccer matches let alone other leagues. I actually had to Google that guy, seems like a prominent soccer player. Also, cricket is a small and obscure sport in European context, so I can understand where he is coming from.

I used to watched the football and huge Ronaldo fan &Real Madrid . But after he left the medrid my interest is gone.

Benzema, Ronaldo , Luka Modric and bale were the my favourite player's .

Real Madrid is greatest football club .

Naah tennis is fairly popular worldwide. Djokovic, Federer, Nadal are amongst the most recognized sports celebrities !

Cricket is bit like NFL in USA. Huge in their respective countries but barely a murmur outside their borders !

Just because football is major sport in the world, it does not mean other sports do not matter. For sub continental fans and SENA countries Cricket is still amongst the popular sports.

Cricket is mainly big in countries that UK colonised or countries next door to those countries. It's not big at all in Europe. European cricket league tournament is lower than club level.

In continental Europe nobody plays it much. Holland only have a team because of South African links.

It is an exceptionally difficult sport to take up and follow unless you have been exposed to it since childhood. It is also exceptionally difficult to play even at a semi serious level because you have to make an investment in equipment.

When the emphasis back in the day was on first class cricket and tests were the pinnacle to sport the barrier to entry for the sport was so high that at a country level it put most countries off.

Now there is a transition towards T20 cricket and short form cricket it may become more appealing to a european audience. The barriers to playing at an individual level may still remain but it can become easier for boards to make investments. Plus, if you are a poor european then the chance to play in a world leading economy like India and send remittances back to your poor european relatives will naturally entice more youngsters to take up the game.

Kevin De Bruyne plays for my club, the greatest club of all time. So I would humbly request my fellow Indians to be respectful towards him. It's sad that he'll be leaving at the end of this season.

That said, what he mentioned is actually true. Cricket isn’t really followed in most European countries, and many people here don’t even know what the sport is. In the UK, there’s definitely a following, especially among purists who prefer Test cricket. However, its popularity doesn’t come close to that of football, rugby, or motorsport. In the UK, cricket is largely considered a minority sport, primarily followed by the South Asian community. However, the large population of Sub continental people makes it 2nd most viewed sport.

There is only a greatest club in football ( all Time ) and his name is REAL MEDRID and seriously Most of Indian fans didn't know who is Kevin de bruyne including me.
:kp

Leicester City legend and future Bangla Tigers Footballer 🤣

You need to give it a rest with that lame joke buddy. You been trying yo dig at Hamza Chowdhary a lot since he joined Bangladesh. That Leicester city player is market worth is more than your entire Indian team. What would you know about that, I don’t expect Indians like you to know. best stick to cricket without embarrassing yourself further.

Anyone who follows football knows who he is. He is hardly some unknown benchwarmer. :inti

To be fair to him, he said no one in Europe watches cricket, if he meant only England, that wouldn't have made much sense. And now that I know he plays for @Rajdeep's favorite team, Manchester City, I have reinstated him in my FC Mobile team. Welcome back, Kev. :yk :inti

Bro spoke facts and we got triggered because we suck in sports. Cricket is only sport where we have some achievements and no one cares about cricket outside India. Its painful fact but its true. We are not naturally athletic race of people like Europeans/Blacks etc.

lol what nonsense.
Who said they are all naturally athletic. There is plenty of atheltic desis

It’s more lack of access to high standard for living, lack of access to proper nutrition, facilities etc. Asian race has a huge diverse pool of genes. It’s a mix of everything.

Desi parents don’t endorse sports as an option for their kids. Lot of developed nations have proper school systems in place to encourage sports.

China has changed things around because they invested heavily for the Olympics. Other Asian countries don’t. Aus spends almost double what India does for Olympics.

What offense has KDB caused here?? 🤷‍♂️
Everyone is not supposed to know about every sport.
Cricket has limited fanbase and its a fact. Any mockery about cricket would be the general disdain Europeans have for the English snobbish behavior. And Cricket "the gentlemen's game" has always been the symbol of PEAK ENGLISH SNOBBERY as per the rest of the world. Players having tea breaks during 5 day long games, its pretty easy to make fun of.

crickets peak in england was the 2005 ashes, free to air, everyone was talking about it. then it went to sky and slowly faded from mass public perception. also KDB is right, cricket isnt even on the landscape in Europe. the balkan countries second sport is basketball, the norterh easter European countries its ice hockey. tennis is a cultural sport across the continent but popularity depends on local players. cricket revolves around india, even interest in countries like Pakistan is falling, its no where near the craze of the 90s.
