One of Pakistan's greenest provinces is becoming greener still: in just a year, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has added three-quarters of a billion new trees, as part of a "tree tsunami" aimed at reversing worsening forest loss.

The success on the ground is phenomenal.

"This is not just about planting trees but about changing attitudes," said Rab Nawaz, senior director of programmes for WWF-Pakistan, which has helped audit the tree-planting effort.

The Billion Tree Tsunami, which involves adding trees both by planting and natural regeneration, is backed by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI).

It aims to turn around deforestation and increase the province's forested area by at least 2pc.

Years of tree felling have reduced Pakistan's forests to under 2pc of its land area, one of the lowest levels in the region, according to a 2015 UN Food and Agriculture Organisation report.

About 40pc of the country's remaining forests are in KP, where PTI's tree planting effort is expected to hit its billion-tree goal by the end of 2017.

Scaling up saplings

In preparation for the reforestation effort, the provincial government helped set up a network of tree nurseries across the province in 2016, providing loans and purchase agreements for tree saplings.

Altogether it has spent Rs11 billion ($110 million) on the effort, said Malik Amin Aslam, the chairman of the province's Green Growth Initiative.

About 13,000 government and private nurseries, in almost every district of the province, are now producing hundreds of thousands of saplings of local and imported tree varieties, including pines, walnuts and eucalyptus, Aslam told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

The nurseries have provided about 40pc of the new trees in KP; the remaining trees have come from natural regeneration in forests now put under protection, he said.

Many small-scale nurseries, producing up to 25,000 saplings, have been set up with cash advances and a guaranteed purchase agreement from the provincial government.

Such small nurseries can earn incomes of around Rs12-15,000 a month, a sizeable income for rural villagers, said Aslam.

An estimated 500,000 green jobs have been created through the effort, some of which have gone to rural women and unemployed youth, he said.

"People have become aware that forests are KP's precious resource," he added.

Aslam said the regeneration effort is being monitored by both the provincial forest department and WWF-Pakistan, working as an auditor.

Nawaz, of WWF, said he had just returned from three days looking at 2.5 million new trees in the province. He called the restoration an amazing achievement by the government's forest department and by local communities who are paid to plant trees.

"Whether you support PTI or not, no one can deny that this is an environmental, economic and social success for other provinces to follow," he said.

Better tech and enforcement

The project is being monitored using modern technology. Last week Khan launched the project's website, which includes GPS coordinates of all the plantations and a live tree counter.

"This is a project for the future of Pakistan and something I keep very close to my heart. It is not only helping KP by providing a green, breathable environment and green jobs but is also building up Pakistan's much-needed defence against the high climate vulnerability that it faces," the cricketer-turned-politician told the the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

"It significantly contributes to the global efforts for sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change", Khan added.

To protect its forests, the PTI government has also enforced a complete ban on the cutting and felling of trees in reserved forests.

The government says the activities of the powerful "timber mafia" have been curtailed through dismantling more than 600 illegal sawmills and arresting more than 300 timber cutters, as well as issuing heavy fines.

"Two of our forest guards have been killed in timber encounters while many have braved injuries," Aslam said.

"All of these steps have forced the timber mafia on to the back foot and delivered a clear political message of ‘zero tolerance' to the illicit cutting of wood."

Effort goes nationwide

The project has been recognised by the Bonn Challenge, a global partnership aiming to restore 150 million hectares of the world's deforested and degraded lands by 2020.

The KP government – the only province to register under the Bonn Challenge, officials said – has committed to restore 380,000 hectares of forests and has already achieved nearly 80pc of that goal, Aslam said.

The Bonn challenge website estimates an economic benefit of the reforestation effort at $121m for the province, in terms of carbon sequestration, better watershed improvement and future sustainable wood supplies.

The project has proven so popular that the federal government has now begun implementing its own "Green Pakistan Programme".

The aim of the programme is to plant 100 million trees all over the country over the next five years.

Massive coverage for Billion tree tsunami in global media from last few days. I have never seen any Pakistani project getting this much coverage and appreciation in global media. Billion tree tsunami is finally becoming a reality and not just a khokla vaada by another pakistani political party.

Well done PTI and IK and i hope there is a massive effort across all provinces and if done well could lead to both environmental protection and sustainable logging to develop a timber industry worth billions.

In an age where the world environment is under siege due to developing countries soaring industrialisation, this is a welcome step in the right direction. While I realise that emerging economies like China and India want to play catch up with the west, we still have to consider the impact on our future generations even if our predecessors ( in the west) didn't.

Good initiative. With only about 5% of the land under forest cover, Pakistan really needed this.

There is something very comforting about tree's. I always find peace and solace sitting amongst them away from all the problem's of the world. Ik has done a great job here.

Always been a fan of PTI's eco-friendly policies. Love trees.

I hope this is done in other provinces as well even the cities. I almost cried when I went to Khalid Bin Waleed road pechs Karachi 2-3 years ago. I lived near there for many years. That road was one of the greenest in Karachi with many trees 50-60 years old. PPP gave a contract to someone who cut them down and sold off the wood.

That's the case with every where in the city. Freaking 50-60 year old trees were cut for nothing.

Now there is another massive surge in tree cutting to make way for the BRT

Good to see. I heard many people in rural areas of KPK use wood as a fuel, should be replaced with cleaner form of energy. Something also needs to be done about Punjab. We are turning fertile land into concrete jungles.

A wasteland in 2013 and now a Green sea! (Plantation near Gambila River, Bannu)

PPP's Bilawal Bhutto: "We haven’t witnessed any change in the province (KP)”

Someone should ask him when was the last time he visited KP? If i remember correctly he and his father were unable to visit KP when they were in govt because of a blast every day.

In Pakistani politics, these kind of projects mean absolutely nothing. Most people would rate local roads or even gutters higher than trees let alone metros.

The billion tree project may never be appreciated but it's impact is lot bigger than most projects completed in Pakistan.

The problem is Pakistani politicians love travelling to London and Europe but never bother to walk into a council office or local authority to undertstand how their citizens are giving clean running water and sewage systems. Hell forget the councils just go to the water company offices etc. But no thats not important. No holistic vision. Thats what really winds me up about the PMLN they just come across as thick and stupid.

Need to make this reforestation work by allowing sustainable logging which benefits the local communities. Otherwise, and understandably the locals will see no value as they dont see the bigger picture.

Not a tree surgeon or horticulturist by any stretch of the imagination, not even sat through a single episode of gardeners world, however I'd say going by how quickly these trees have grown, that shouldn't be an issue.

Pakistan’s Billion Tree Tsunami restores 350,000 hectares of forests and degraded land to surpass Bonn Challenge commitment

The Billion Tree Tsunami Afforestation Project in Pakistan’s northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province has surpassed its target by restoring and planting trees in 350,000 hectares of degraded forest landscapes.

Launched in 2015 by Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaf party, the Billion Tree Tsunami aims to turn the tide on land degradation and loss in the mountainous, formerly forested KPK province in the Hindu Kush mountain range. The campaign simultaneously helped KPK province fulfil its 348,400 hectare commitment to the Bonn Challenge – a global effort to bring 150 million hectares of deforested and degraded land into restoration by 2020 and 350 million hectares by 2030. This marks the first Bonn Challenge pledge to reach its restoration goal.

“The project is naturally restoring a previously deforested landscape, which will assist in meeting present and future needs and offers multiple benefits for climate adaptation and mitigation in a very climate-vulnerable province,” says Muhammad Tehmasip, Project Director of the Billion Tree Tsunami.

The project has achieved its restoration target through a combination of protected natural regeneration (60%) and planned afforestation (40%). In addition, it has established 13,000 private tree nurseries, which have already boosted local incomes, generated thousands of green jobs, and empowered unemployed youth and women in the province.

“IUCN congratulates the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on reaching this momentous milestone. The Billion Tree Tsunami initiative is a true conservation success story, one that further demonstrates Pakistan’s leadership role in the international restoration effort and continued commitment to the Bonn Challenge,” says Inger Anderson, Director General of IUCN.

The planted trees are reinforcing riparian embankments in important catchment areas, including along the banks of the Indus, Kunhar and Swat rivers. The project has also added tree resources to agricultural lands currently engaged in farm forestry, improved biodiversity by restoring wildlife shelters, and will contribute to CO₂ sequestration through new tree plantations.

In support of the Billion Tree Tsunami, the KPK government invested US$ 123 million in funding and will allocate an additional US$ 100 million to maintain the project through June 2020. This support makes the project one of the largest eco-investments ever made in Pakistan.

Restoration is also gaining important national support. In 2016, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif announced the Green Pakistan Programme, with a goal to plant over 100 million trees in the country. Additionally, Pakistan made a national pledge to the Bonn Challenge in May 2017 to complement the existing KPK commitment – pledging 100,000 hectares during the first Asia Bonn Challenge High-level Roundtable in South Sumatra, and helping the Bonn Challenge cross the 150 million hectare milestone.

I would be interested to know how many trees actually survived. ..
As I planted ~200 cedar trees at my place, and every year I need to replace ~10%...and I take good care of these trees.

first sentence of that article is misleading...

Article:

A province in Pakistan has planted a billion trees in just two years

Truth:

I was watching and trying to figure out how Black Zero will turn this into a negative, and looks like he has.

I would say miracle, trees grown ON the water.

You can still see the river in second picture away from trees. In first picture the wasteland is easy to recognize far away from the water. How hard it is appreciate a positive thing for a change? Truth:

I love nature and even if they planted 1 tree...i would still appreciate it...
however, one does not need to exaggerate an already good thing...

Regarding turning this to "negative", i could have just posted below:

Ecologists denounce PTI one billion tree campaign in KP

or I could have highlighted the smuggling of lumber from KP.

Thanks for that article, but if you read all the way down there's a dissenting voice, to the dissenting voice, who talks of long term benefit, as opposed to the short term issues the gentleman brings up.

And as for smuggling of lumber, which party said they'd take on the "Timber Mafia"?

Thanks for the compliment.

In a way we two can claim that it's a compliment but it doesn't end there.

You , and for that matter everyone has right to criticise in true spirit. If we criticise Imran Khan, this doesn't and shouldn't portray us as devils.

But if we criticise IK as a defence of MNS or anyone, this indeed portray us as devil's advocate.

Govt., in a democracy, is in an agreement with people to utilise taxpayers' money to facilitate needs of people in a preferential order according to geo-social requirements of time. MNS has failed.

What I see is a trend where it seems you think criticising IK is best way to defend of MNS.

I do not see much merit in the dissenting voice that's why I did not cite it originally...

You are assuming that I am defending MNS...
its the same mistake when friends assumed, few years back, that I was defending Zardari.

on a separate note, its very simplistic approach to think from pro or anti perspectives...
Let the truth/facts lead you...is the principle that i aim for.

Sorry I forgot to respond to the last part...

Lumber smuggling is a global issue and its good that PTI leadership is paying at least lip service about this issue as this will create awareness.

I do not have the link, but I recall that few years back, PTI's ally member from KP accused IK or Khattak of calling him late night to release the smuggled lumber trucks... I do not know the background and I did not follow up the story as smuggling of lumber from KP is happening for centuries...and very influential people involved and politician may prefer to keep these influential people happy...

maybe WebGuru can add some color to that story..

We will need alot more a billion trees to put a dent on our forested area. Ideally it should be around 20% but we are hovering at about 2%

Green helps to calm people. Great idea, and i hope every one comes on board.

The intentions may have been noble at one point, but unfortunately this initiative has turned out to be a scam.

Less than half of the billion trees have been planted and a lot of them have been regenerated. Furthermore, they have bought saplings for PKR 9 when it was available for PKR 2.

Furthermore, it has been revealed that in most instances, cash payments have been made instead of cross cheques or POs.

How can the tax payers money be accounted?

More than 250 million has been paid in cash, which is against all rules.

But these are all lies and Niazi is honest.

But these are all lies and Niazi is honest.

Another reader of Geo Jang spotted. For your information KP Govt sent the order to Jang Geo to provide 10 million saplings at that rate as they mentioned in their program of Salim Lifafi. And maybe international org like WWF are also part of the scam because they monitored this campaign? the head of this initiative nazar hussain shah (forrest sec) is one of the most honest man in KP bureaucracy he was a colleague of my cousin. Here is a slap from Nazar on Geo Jang news face you can also avail this offer and provide them saplings at that rate they are ready to buy 10 million.

If this is by Geo then theres a good chance of that

Tbf international organizations have applauded this so there must be sth right going on

Funny this guy has a problem with 250 million paid in cash (which is a false claim btw and peddled by patwari media group which this guy subscribes to) but has no problem with the billions that the Sharifs have stolen.

The same Shahbaz Sharif who you call a short term good option as PM had declared that the financing and payment agreement of 200+ billion ruppees Lahore metro train is "classified" and not released any information of where the money is coming from and where it is going for that project. Didn't see you bumping threads for that?

So if GEO are right then obviously they will take the challenge and get the them for 2 rupees each. And if its a lie like all the stuff from you and Geo, maybe you and Geo could pay for the whole project. Take the challenge son.

Apparently Geo has become the Noora bible. How pathetic that the quote a criminal organization as the their only source of news.

Now you are getting desperate my friend and partly because you are reading too much Jang/Geo propaganda. This project is hailed by WWF and IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) as exemplary and they have recognised that Pakistan exceeded Bonn challenge commitment.

Hamid Mir and many top journalists were invited and briefed by Malik Amin Aslam and others on progress and Geo's own Hamid Mir tweeted this after the meeting

People need to understand what is "reforestation" how one billion trees were added in KPK? https://t.co/BPUFils76i
— Hamid Mir (@HamidMirPAK) February 18, 2018

If people even criticise this project that got recognition around the world then you can't take any of their criticism seriously.

Hahahaha that was best shut up call to Jang and their masters, if you can find saplings for Rs2 in market, send us 10 million :))

The way Nazar Hussain Shah shut up Salim Safi was brilliant, he was pretty much out of words.

It's quite funny how PMLN supporters due to their dumb leadership think Imran Khan lied to world that 1 Billion trees were planted and they all believed him without having any verification process :))

And then they come to most lame arguments that all trees were not new, well they were regrown and without that there won't be any trees so what is your point?

But then we are talking about a group that thinks building Shaukat Khanum hospital is nothing special and credit goes to shairrr for giving land :broad:broad

Mamoon actually this has now fully been discredited and even some Geo anchors with independence have confirmed it (Hamid Mir I believe)

This really shows that your agenda against IK is obsessive rather than based on actual content. Disappointing!

"But these are all lies and Niazi is honest"-Do you think Mamoon will take this opportunity to show up IK. Afterall what better way to prove you are right. Maybe after he spent the money on the sapplings there will less money for vacations.

People supporting Showbaz worried about 25 carore that the amount should have been distributed by cheques and not cash. :))
You can also keep records for cash and you can do corruption while making payments on cheques.

Regeneration was always a part of this project along with plantation.
