Man Utd close to signing Wolves' Cunha

Matheus Cunha's transfer to Manchester United is at an advanced stage as the Wolves forward nears a £62.5m move to Old Trafford.

BBC Sport understands United will be required to pay the full fee for the Brazil attacker in three instalments, during a two-year period.

The two parties are closing in on a total agreement over personal terms, with sources indicating a deal over the forward's package is now a formality.

Wolves are yet to receive a formal approach, but that is expected in the coming days.

Cunha's release clause is worth £62.5m, meaning there is no requirement for lengthy club-to-club negotiations - provided United meet the specific terms of the buy-out.

Well-placed sources have indicated that they will be required to pay the full amount by the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

The first £20.8m will be paid upon purchase and the second instalment at the end of next season, with the final amount due in the summer of 2027.

I for one am happy he has come in and STUCK to what he wants to do, and if that has shown up certain players so be it.

I don’t think United should give up on Amorim yet. But think so far Amorim has been one of the worst managers I’ve seen over a season. Tactically rubbish and stubborn. I’m not sure his system will even work even if he gets his player. Nearly every player got worse. I’ve never seen a manager so unadaptable.

Even Europa league final. It was amorims fault. Brought the subs on far too late, sent in the wrong team. I can’t believe he waited 70 mins to do something. Had he even done it at half time I think the result would have been different.

Spurs adapted in the final playing an unusual style for them to cover for injuries to their attack. And it worked.

Worse still spurs can blame injuries for this season. Man United can’t, they didn’t have anywhere near the amount of injuries nearly everyone was fit.

I even think sending away rashford, Anthony, now Garnacho is a bit of a mistake. They are better than the likes of Hojlund, Mount etc.

And because of this disaster season, recruitment will be harder too.

Kind of feel it’s the situation where he might be the right manager just the wrong time. I don’t think he’s the best guy to get rid of the deadwood in the squad, get the best of a bad bunch and get the club to get a stage where someone can actually build. Ironically for all the hate ole did that somewhat. Ten Haag when ahead and ruined the squad spending a fortune. All that damage has to be undone now.

I’d give him time, but it feels like the worst situation and extremely high risk to have a manager like Amorim come in.

I don’t see how the board make that leap of faith backing Amorim fully in the transfer market with results like this. Too much of a risk especially when they are reeling from the signings of previous regime. And they will have to pay far above the proper price and higher wages to attract good players with no European football. Its tough to judge Amorin right now, as he was given a poor squad. Too many players who are not good enough on high wages. However his tactics and subs in the Europa final were strange.

It isn't tough to judge Amorim, as he has been there for 6 six months. That is more than enough time to judge a manager. Yes, the squad is poor, but he made these players look worse than they really are. Last season, Man United finished 8th. If they had finished around the same place this season, then I could make the excuse for him, but not when he has Man United finishing 15th. That is unacceptable and sackable as far as I am concerned. When Ten Hag got the sack, Man United were 4 points of the champions league places. Under Amorim, they have finished 24 points adripft of the champions league. As bad as Ten Hag was towards the end, he looks like Sir Alex Ferguson compared to Amorim.

There’s nothing basically. Amorim hasn’t impressed in any way whatsoever. If it were any other team in the big 7 I would sack him. It’s because it’s united, I’d give him time, because they’ve sacked so many and nothings working. It’s whether he can replicate his Sporting success eventually or not.

I don’t think he should be backed fully financially as it’s too risky. He needs to prove he is worth backing. He hasn’t done that yet. You don’t just throw money at him when he first arrives. They did that with ten hag. Ironically ten hag relied on the players from previous regime/he didn’t sign to get those trophies. He arguably would have delivered almost the same performance had he not signed hardly anyone. There’s even a case he might have done better given there’s an argument he made the squad worse. It’s funny the one time man united actually go and fully back a manager and they chose the worst one to do so who has damaged the club.

Thats why Amorims lack of adaptability worries me. As a manager of a team in premier league you have to be adaptable. Most clubs don’t get everyone they want bar maybe Man City. Champions league football would have helped hugely with recruitment. Either Amorim was so stubborn (especially with Garnacho) that he was willing to lose a Europa final then bring substitutes on. Or he was so woefully tactically inept that he didn’t realise that changing things up/choosing a different set of players would make a difference.

Also the guy is incredibly negative. Calling his squad terrible, worst ever man united team etc. People were praising him back then for doing that, but I thought it was awful. Someone who wants to do best, keeps confidence of squad high, doesn’t negative talk down. I honestly don’t see how you get the best out of the squad, calling them rubbish.

Well. Chopping and changing Managers certainly hasnt helped. Infact, it's caused more problems.

He's been consistent with his philosophy from day one. He won't change. He's basically telling recruitment, im not comfortable with these players with the philosophy I believe in. Let him get rid of the dead wood in hugh wages, bring his players in, then we can scrutinize his results and performances.

Manchester United are interested in Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo.

It's understood they are getting encouragement that Mbeumo wants to come to Old Trafford.

BBC Sport has been told the club will welcome the players back to Carrington if their futures are not resolved, allowing them access to medical and training support.

Rashford had previously indicated a willingness to return for the start of United's pre-season preparations on Monday.

The 27-year-old England forward was exiled by manager Ruben Amorim in December and spent the second half of the season on loan at Aston Villa.

Amorim had also told Garnacho, 21, he will be allowed to join a new club in the summer after the Argentine was left out of the squad for their final game of the Premier League season.

Sancho, meanwhile, returned to Old Trafford after Chelsea paid a £5m penalty not to sign him on a permanent basis following a season on loan at Stamford Bridge.

Brazil winger Antony was on loan at La Liga side Real Betis last season, while defender Malacia spent the second half of the previous campaign at PSV Eindhoven.

United's first pre-season friendly is against Leeds on 19 July in Stockholm before they go to the United States for the Premier League Summer Series friendlies.

A Manchester United fan has admitted assaulting Manchester City player Jack Grealish by slapping his face after he claimed the footballer insulted him.

Alfie Holt, 20, pleaded guilty to a single count of assault on Grealish, who he said had called him ugly and a swear word after the Manchester Derby on 6 April, Manchester Magistrates' Court heard.

Holt, a Manchester United season ticket holder in the Stretford End, was given a three-year Football Banning Order and ordered to pay a £120 fine.

The defendant, of Droylsden, Tameside, told the court: "I did not expect [Grealish] to say what he said to me and I have reacted. I regret it. That's it."

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford's dream transfer to Barcelona is moving closer with a deal in principle reached over a potential loan move to the Spanish giants

Barcelona have been Rashford's preferred destination since he suggested it was time for a new challenge in December after being dropped by head coach Ruben Amorim.

BBC Sport has been told talks have taken place involving intermediaries and an outline verbal agreement has been reached.

The transfer would be an initial loan with an option to buy.

Spanish champions Barcelona looked set to sign Spain winger Nico Williams earlier this summer.

However, the 22-year-old signed a new 10-year contract at Athletic Bilbao.

Rashford spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he made 17 appearances across all competitions - scoring four goals and providing six assists.

He is one of five United players - and the highest paid - told to train separately from Amorim's squad amid a stand-off over their futures.

The 27-year-old does not believe he will play for United again while Amorim is at the club.

Him joining Barcelona would be a big positive for United as they look to strengthen Amorim's squad.

With more than £130m committed to signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, further deals have to be funded through departures.

Even if Rashford's exit were initially on loan, the saving off the wage bill would be significant given only Casemiro earns more than his £325,000-a-week salary.

I like the fact that we have signed two proven premier league players in Cunha and Mbeumo. Under Sir Alex, we usually use to shop in the premier league and that served us really well. In recent years, we have wasted hundreds of millions on players playing in other leagues, and they usually come to Man United and flop. Of course, Cunha and Mbeumo can flop but there is less of a chance of that happening than there would be had we signed some clown playing in the Dutch League for 90 million.

Bryan Mbeumo says he has joined "the club of his dreams" after completing his move from Brentford for an initial £65m.

The 25-year-old has signed a five-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months.

He is manager Ruben Amorim's third signing of the summer after the arrivals of forward Matheus Cunha and left-back Diego Leon.

Mbeumo's move, seven weeks after United's first bid for the Cameroon international, brings to an end one of the longest-running sagas of the summer.

United's third offer, worth an initial £65m with £6m in add-ons, was accepted last week.

"As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up," said Mbeumo.

"My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

"Everybody told me about the environment that is being created here and how exciting the plans are for the future. This is a massive club, with an incredible stadium and amazing fans, we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies."

United submitted their first bid for Mbeumo - worth an overall £55m - at the start of June.

They failed with a second bid of £62.5m at the end of that month before reaching an agreement with their third offer.

Mbeumo scored 70 goals and registered 51 assists in 242 games for Brentford since joining in 2019 from Troyes.

He netted 20 goals and registered seven assists in the Premier League last season - both career highs.

"Bryan's goals and assists record in the Premier League is exceptional, his remarkable consistency has put him among the most productive players in England for the last three seasons," said United director of football Jason Wilcox.

"Bryan's belief in our project and determination to join the club confirmed he was the perfect fit for Manchester United and the culture we are developing."

Mbeumo's departure makes him the Bees' biggest ever sale, eclipsing the £40m paid by Al-Ahli for Ivan Toney in August 2024.

"On behalf of everyone at Brentford, I would like to wish Bryan all the best for the future and thank him for his fantastic efforts over six seasons with us," said Bees director of football Phil Giles.

"Bryan came to us as a teenager, and it has been an absolute pleasure for all of us here to watch him develop as a player and a person. Our fans have loved him, and he has been a part of some of our greatest days.

"There is always a right time for a player to move on and, for Bryan, that time is now. He has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world and we are very happy for him."

The winger, who will wear the number 19 shirt, is expected to be in United's travelling squad for their pre-season tour of the United States on Tuesday.

A player hitting his peak?

Mbeumo recorded career-best figures in the Premier League last season for virtually every attacking metric, including goals and assists, chances created and touches in the opposition box.

With a shot conversion rate of 23.53%, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah and Newcastle United's Alexander Isak were more clinical in front of goal.

His work out of possession in key areas should also be noted. He won the ball back 32 times in the opposition third, ranking him third out of all Premier League players.

But perhaps Mbeumo's unique selling point is his running threat with the ball at his feet. He was responsible for nine carries of more than five metres which directly ended in a goal being scored in 2024-25 - comfortably the most of any Premier League player last season.
