What's new

Middle-order of Pakistan ODI side needs to be fixed

It's an overall horrible team combination playing today, fast bowlers who can't move the new ball, spinners who can't turn on spin friendly conditions and batsmen who can't score where every decent team is scoring

Weak middle-order + Shadab is not reliable enough to be the first-choice spinner tasked with delivering 10 overs every game. The ideal situation would be a specialist batsman replacing Fahim and a specialist spinner replacing Shadab. This would strengthen both the middle-order and the bowling attack simultaneously.

Same situation as the original question then.

30 overs from the fast bowlers.

10 from a specialist spinner.

10 from Malik + Haris?

We have Fakhar, Haris, Babar, Sarfaraz. I dont think we have better batsman.

Yes. To me this looks better than what we have now, especially in the UAE.

I this this match has been an eye opener. Hope we win it, but it's told us quite a lot. Shinwari sadly isn't consistent enough and wilts the longer he bowls. Had high hopes for him, but time to drop him. Amir needs to come back, but if shaheen afridi can keep bowling like this, our pace attack will look better.

Most importantly we need 2 spinners in the team in these conditions. Shadab has to come back and Nawaz has to stay.

While I like the extra batsman, think we have no choice our pace bowling attack is looking too bad atm, and we need the 2 spinners. So think we need Nawaz at 7, and one of the batters dropped. Probably either Imam or Asif at this point.

Fakhar
Sarfraz
Babar
————
Haris (part time attempted spin)
Malik (part time spin)
Umar Akmal (av.37 at 6 s.r.87)
Faheem (bowling A.R)

Shadab (bowling A.R)
Hasan
Amir
Junaid

I will die happy if we get this squad for WC

My God, one loss to India and everyone freaks out.

Faheem has bowled well enough on most occasions to make the team on his bowling alone, though I can understand that he might not be ideal on subcontinental pitches. However, he should be persisted with because he is crucial outside Asia and needs time at the crease to come good. At the moment, his batting is not up to the mark.

Shadab has been bowling well enough considering his role in the team and is usually a wicket-taking threat though ideally there should be a front-line spinner in the squad alongside him. As for his batting, the naysayers will come to realise his value someday. In the long run, he should aim to bat in the middle-order.

Faheem and Shadab will remain important members of the ODI team.

The only major area of concern is #4, because against stronger teams we'll continue to be exposed with batsmen like Malik or Sarfaraz at that spot. At one point, Sarfaraz was serviceable though not ideal for the spot, while we know what Malik is capable of. Good bowling lineups can always have you two down early and you need a proper bat at #4. Whether that's Haris or someone else, I don't know.

Asif is fine as well though that shot against Afghanistan reminded me of Afridi. Maybe just don't slog wildly and it's all good.

Great post. Always have great perspective.

Coming to Asif, I have been a big supporter of his and I have a lot of faith in his ability. That said it's difficult to say what I am more disappointed in: the shot or some of the knee jerk reactions on here.

Valid criticism:

It was a poor shot and showed a lack of maturity. He had already hit Rashid for a six off the second ball of the over, so four singles from the remaining four balls would have been fine. There were still two overs from Aftab left which Asif could target. He showed batting intelligence and maturity in the most recent Pakistan Cup and that's the Asif we need to see in Pakistan colours.

Not valid criticism:

He's a useless hack. Waste of space. What is he doing in the team etc. etc.

I still think in the UAE we need another spinner alongside Shadab. Zafar seems to be the first choice for a lot of fans including me. Can bat, bowls left arm offspin and seems like a decent fielder. Also his fitness is important. Hopefully goes to a team in PSL so that he can play more often.

Why would we need another spinner when we have Nawaz with the legend Imad waiting in the wings when he can pass a fitness test? :ma

Really hope we induct a proper spinner into the national team setup soon, required in all formats besides maybe T20Is.

The moment Asif hit that shot, I knew what was coming. :29:

Do hope he shows better game awareness in future as that's what is expected of him.

Preferably a finger spinner to give us a variety in our bowling attack.

He plays for IU in PSL, but only played two games in PSL3. His spell against PZ was near perfect.

I know but he should play more regularly. If he can't find game time at IU, he might want to hope for a release or swap to another team.

Even when he scored some runs, he has never looked in control to me. I have very little faith in his batting and he does not give the impression of a proper batsman. His dismissal in the last game was very tail-ender like. A proper batsmen rarely gets off-balance like he did.

If he turns up at 9 or 10, I don't think he will look out of place. However, he does look out of place at 7. Watching him arrive to the crease when Pakistan are 5 down makes me very nervous and anxious.

I’ve noticed that he sometimes plays short-ish deliveries on the front foot. And that’s what he did on that occasion. May be that’s something he can work on but I don’t agree that he’s a tailender.

Its still a problem of which we dont have a solution yet. India's middle order at least makes runs when they get a start, yesterday we had a start and still fell like pack of cards.

Sarfraz
Hafeez
Malik

These guys should be history after the world cup. It's enough.
