LAHORE: Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has offered veteran batsman Muhammad Yousuf to join as a batting consultant in the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

“We want to see Yousuf in the NCA, and are offering him a one-year contract,” a board official told The Express Tribune.

The official added that the board approached the legendary batsman after watching him coach Peshawar Zalmi’s junior team in their cricket academy.

Responding to the offer, the 42-year-old said he hopes to help newcomers if he takes up the new position. “Yes, I have been offered to join the NCA and work with young players,” he said. “I am ready to help newcomers and share my experience with Pakistan’s future batsmen. However, nothing is final yet and I hope everything is done quickly.”

Yousuf played 90 Tests and 288 ODIs for Pakistan, scoring 7,530 and 9,720 runs respectively, between 1997 and 2010.

Let's see whether MoYo is all talk or not...

Wastage of money.

First of all you have to look.at the coaches philosophy and what he believes in.

He doesnt believe in fitness and when he doesnt how will he influe ce the youngsters at NCA?

Hopefully its a short stint before this spot is given to Younis

Good decision by the PCB to finally use greats of Pakistan cricket like Inzi, Mushtaq and now Yousuf.

Its not yusufs job to teach them fitness but his job is to polish their techniques. They should know about fitness and diet from an earlier age

i think his job is to teach batsmen about technical issues and other batting things

It is Yousufs job.

How should the players know themselves. 90 percent of these fuys are really poor guys who cant afford food. They cant enjoy 2 meals. How could they have 1 meal and do firness?

Good appointment more of this is needed by pcb. His job isn't to teach fitness but to teach and correct batting faults.Pcb should hire a dietian and fitness expert at NCA to make youngsters understand the importance of fitness.

PCB has different coaches for fitness

It's not one guy taking care of everything

Mudassar Nazar supervises everything though

In theory it's a good idea providing he does what he is asked to do.

I believe these are Najam Sethi effect. I saw his interview in PTV 6 month ago. I felt he tried to say that PCB had made several wrong decisions in past. Now he want to involve ex cricketers in board. All these are happening in the likes of Inzi/Yousuf.

PCB is taking professional steps!!! Really impressed

Does he actually have any coaching badges or is this based on his own abilities as a batsman?

Does he have social ability to teach others without being condescending? I think not.

He is a critic by nature, would be better as a scout.

A batting coach/consultant is different from a nutritionist or fitness coach/consultant, each have a unique role with unique requirements.

I agree with this post unfortunately

He was a great batsman and a pleasure to watch but he is a very negative person

Interesting choice for Batting Consultant, but lets see if it will work. Loved and grew up watching his 2006 run. One of my favourite batsman but it depends if he can now become a teacher and teach youngsters the art of batting. Hopefully he would have met M.Arthur on what he is looking for in a test level batsman. Personally would have asked someone like Saeed Anwar. But then again that's what I think

whatever we think about Moyo the man and the pundit he was still one of our greats and maybe he can impart some technical knowledge on our players that other coaches cant. Good to see PCB recruiting our Greats.

this is total crap.... people with no food or very very poor family who cant afford to have two meals a day will never waste time playing a sport rather would start working in a very young age.
yousuf is appointed as a batting consultant not a coach.. he wont be working with boys all the time like coaches for regional teams those boys play for.

really really sad to see he didnt get a chance to 10k runs in one day.. he was just 250 odd runs short.

Good decision this!

MoYo with his experience and guile has a lot to offer as a batting coach and mentor - will greatly benefit our youth players.

what happened to him and Afghani cricket team? was that not in the air a few months ago?

It will be a very good decision, I'm happy ex-greats are trying to contribute towards the PCB, first Inzamam and now Mohammad Yousuf. Thank God we have moved on from the Mohsin Khan's Intikhab Alam's and Haroon Rasheed's that have plagued the PCB for so long..

bro, i play club cricket, and i have witness this from my own eyes. easy to make comments on a PC, need to go down to clubs in Pakistan.

WHat do you think? Cricket is played by the rich or the middle class in Pakistan? THats what i use to think, the situation here is much worse.

A batting consultant also has to teach the kids about fitness and stuff. Fitness does come in handy when batting. DOes it or does it not?

Running between the wickets requires fitness

Yousuf is a good friend of Inzamam's and it's most likely that Inzi is pushing for a role for Yousuf.

He is going to be a batting consultant at the NCA.

Are there no fitness specialists at the NCA?

If so, I don't see the problem.

Firstly, has he even 'officially' retired from international cricket?

Why would that matter? He's retired for all intents and purposes, an official press release isn't needed everytime someone hangs their boots.

Excellent move if it is confirmed. The skills cannot be allowed to be wasted like that

MoYo has attitude issues, because he is not open to suggestions or criticism (& he doesn't listen or trust to qualified people, unless he is one of his own group - one can check the number of contractual issues that he had in his playing career). He is poor as a media person because of lack of diplomacy, for that I don't think he is a good choice for any coaching role with senior team. I just don't find him tactful & professional enough to work with fellow National players, who like him are also representing PAK team on their own credit.

But, he is the best possible local candidate for such a role, where he'll be working with kids. To the academy boys, MoYo is one of the greats of the game, a boyhood hero of many of them - I am sure, there will be no personality clash; rather these kids will accept everything that he tells. For an U19 cricketers, more than strategy, it's important to develop the fundamentals - work ethics, long net hours, solid technique, good batting habits (value to own wicket, concentration, shot selection ....) these are where MoYo was a Champion & he learnt lot about these habits from Bob.

I think, long back I had chosen MoYo as a batting coach at NCA which finally did happen. It should be a long term appointment, but I guess PCB also needs to be sure that MoYo has the right frame of mind & mental maturity to manage such roles for long term. If he passes the behavioral aspect of the role, he can be there for long, long term; at least as long as Mushi & Mudassar are there.

Its a good choice .

Moyo will instill something good in the younger players. He played cricket recently , so not much generation gap also.
