Wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim on Tuesday was declared fit by Bangladesh Cricket Board physicians, but his inclusion in the national team for this month’s Zimbabwe Test remained uncertain with both selectors and head coach opposing to tamper too much with the side.
‘Mushfiqur Rahim and Imrul [Kayes] have been struggling with hamstring and calf muscle. They were undergoing rehab programmes,’ BCB’s chief physician Debashis Chowdhury told reporters in Mirpur.
‘Mushfiqur had a grade-one injury, so we had hoped that he would recover by the second week of February. We had anticipated that Imrul would need one more week.
‘Today they both passed the tests conducted by our physio and trainer. They are both fit to play,’ he added.
Mushfiq, who opted out of the entire Pakistan tour for security concerns, wanted to return to international cricket with the one-off Test against Zimbabwe series from February 22 in Dhaka.
But Mushfiq’s plans received a jolt on Saturday, when BCB announced a 14-man team for Bangladesh’s next three Tests against Pakistan and Zimbabwe without him.
Chief selector Minhajul Abedin cited the batsman’s hamstring injury as the issue behind the exclusion but said that he could come back to the side if he proves his fitness.
But with the Zimbabwe series taking place in between the first and second Pakistan Test, including Mushfiq in the playing XI would mean changing the squad thrice in three Tests, something South African head coach Russell Domingo was opposed to.
Domingo felt regular changes in the Test squad would destabilise the team and hinted that they were likely to stick to the same squad to give other players opportunities during the upcoming Test series.
‘I am under the impression that this is the squad for this one Test match. We will re-evaluate once we get back,’ Domingo said during a press-conference on Monday.
‘You have to remember that Mushfiq got runs in the last Test, but we also need to consider the fact that, it is hard to pick a batting line-up, change it for one Test, and then change it again for the third Test.
‘I want to give guys a run, but we also need to consider that Mushfiq was our best player in India,’ he added.
After passing the fitness Test, Mushfiq will now be available to play the second round match of Bangladesh Cricket League and has a chance to prove his necessity in the Bangladesh middle order.
