Mushfiq not being forced to tour Pakistan, says BCB
Wicket-keeper batsman Mushfiqur Rahim is not being forced to change his decision and join the last leg of Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan, Bangladesh men’s national cricket team Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin claimed on Tuesday.
According to media reports, Mushfiq had been threatened with exclusion from the second ODI against Zimbabwe on Tuesday if he did not change his decision to opt out of the Pakistan tour. The order to exclude Mushfiq reportedly came from Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan.
However, former Bangladesh captain Minhajul brushed off the claims by a section of the media. Mushfiq is yet to change his decision but still played in the ODI, striking 50 runs off 55 deliveries at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
Minhajul however admitted there was a discussion between the selection panel and Mushfiq where the latter was requested to reconsider his decision. Bangladesh in the final phase of the three-part tour of Pakistan in April is to play one ODI and the second Test of the series in Karachi. Mushfiq, ahead of the start of the series in January had pulled off his name from selection citing security concern.
“We have discussed with him in Sylhet and asked him whether he would tour Pakistan but he said ‘no’ to tour straightway after which we didn’t persuade him about this,” said Minhajul to the media at Sylhet International Stadium on Tuesday.
“But the way the thing came in the media, it is absolutely wrong. There was no pressure from anyone else to axe him if he refuses to tour Pakistan this time also. Even ahead of the first Test match against Pakistan, some media reported that he would be axed if he doesn’t tour Pakistan but those are absolutely false.”
Minhajul pressed that the discussion was going on whether they can field a XI in the third ODI against Zimbabwe that would likely play in Pakistan on April 3 and only if Bangladesh had won the second ODI. This would mean non selection of Mushfiq given he is adamant to his decision of not being available.
“We will select the team for Pakistan ODI from these 15 members, which were given for the Zimbabwe ODIs. Since Mushfiq won’t tour Pakistan so the squad is now 14 members and we’ll replace Mushfiq with one. However, we have plan that if Bangladesh confirm the series today, we’ll field the first XI against Zimbabwe in the third match that probably play the Pakistan ODI. So Mushfiq won’t play the third match if we can confirm the series today,” Minhajul explained.
Selection of right-arm pacer Mashrafe bin Mortaza for Pakistan match is however undecided informed Minhajul. Ahead of Zimbabwe series, BCB chief Nazmul had stated the three ODIs to be last for Mashrafe as captain and that his future selection in the team would be based on his fitness and performance. Mashrafe in a recent press conference said he would be available to tour Pakistan, if selected.
