As per a tweet by Najam Sethi, he has proposed that the name of Gaddafi Stadium be changed to Edhi Stadium.

I think its a wrong move. There are plenty of other stadiums located in Pakistan which don't have a proper name give to them.

The Gaddafi stadium's identity has been the name itself. By changing its name, they are just removing its identity.

There is Pindi Stadium, there is National Stadium Karachi, why not change their names?

They are making a new stadium in Islamabad, why not name that stadium as Edhi stadium?

Looks like Sheryar Khan is just showing his hidden hatred for Gaddafi

Gadafi staduim was named after the Libyan dictator, he had almost zero connection to Pakistan

So naming it after one of the greatest Pakistanis is not a bad idea

zero connections?

Boi you need to learn your history

Zulfiqar Bhutto's govt had great relations with him, plus he was always very supportive of Pakistan that he even wrote a strongly worded letter to Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi accusing her of aggression against Pakistan in 1971

There are tens of thousands of stadiums in Pakistan that could be renamed

Lol then why was it named after the guy?

THe reason why it was named Gadafi stadium was because of Gaddafi's speech in Lahore, which was in favour of Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons

Gaddafi was supportive of Pakistan and a good person from the point of view of Pakistani interests so it makes sense to name a stadium after him.

However, now, he is dead and his supporters scattered. He is universally reviled by everyone in the world as an aggressive dictator. Not a good person to be associated with, hence the Edhi name is better.

Gadafi did a lot for pakistan in the 70's its part of our history wheather you liked him or not. Plus edhi sb was mainly associted with karachi so its better to name his hometown statium rather than one a few thousand kms away

Not universally just in the mainstream media i have many nortg afican friends who have a lot of live for him not just libyans but algerians tunisians and moroccans as well

Either name National Stadium Karachi as Edhi stadium or the Islamabad stadium which is under construction for last 15 years ;-)

Lahore stadium ? Just to amuse anti Gaddafi forces and give the credit to Lahori PML N.

Well we can understand if likes of Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa are honored but why Gadaffi of all people and that too an important structure in Pakistan?

Good move if true and in the right direction.

First decision I might respect PCB for actually.

Sorry don't no much about of pak history, I'm was raised in Canada

But I still think they should consider naming it or maybe name a pavilion after him

Who cares what people think of him universally and that so on social media.

The guy did good for pakistan and was very supportive for us.

There are 10 other international stadiums that could be renamed, but they are targetting this stadium on purpose

Good decision. Pakistan needs to dissociate itself from people like Gaddafi.

So because of mass propoganda, we should dissociate with him and become namakharams....

One of the reasons why i like the nation of Iran, they dont go by the worlds opinion.

He did a lot for his country but his crimes are not propaganda.

Gaddafi stadium is Pakistan's most historic cricket ground. Naming it after a Libyan dictator (regardless of his good history with Pakistan) just doesn't sit well, naming it after a national hero like Edhi who is not globally remembered for his crimes is a much better option.

I have personally been hoping for the name of the stadium to be changed for a long time now. Hope it happens.

What will naming things after edhi achieve some are saying name new islamabad airport after him too.

I am sure he would never want any of these to be named after him rather he would have preferred more help towards his eshi foundation so the edhi foundation could help even more who are in need of help

So instead of naming things after him why not make his institution a national institution and take to achieve his all the goals

By naming a structure after him, he won't be forgotten, and future generations will remember him. Although, instead of a stadium, naming an Airport after him would make more sense.

I never knew who Pearson was, but because of Pearson airport, i was able to do some research and found out that he won a noble prize and was a Former Canadian prime minister

Edhi was a saint, he wouldn't have wanted the protocol he got on his funeral as well. However, that does not mean that it was not the right thing to do.

Naming landmarks after him is a way of honoring his memory and celebrating his life, so that the future generations don't forget him.

100 years from now, kids in Pakistan will know the name Edhi because of the Edhi stadium and the Edhi airport, or the Edhi road.

Besides, the Edhi Foundation is the biggest in the world of its kind, it is not going to be impacted with his death, as long as there isn't much external influence, especially by our greedy politicians.

As long as his family and the current management stay in charge, it will continue to prosper.

What he did for Pakistan is in the past. Nothing to be gained by reminding people about it. It doesn't project a good image for Pakistan to be associated with Gadaffi.

Yes, they are targetting this particular stadium and rightfully so.

Always wanted it to be changed, glad it's being considered now. Edhi Gardens sounds good :kapil

Though tbh Edhi Park or Baagh, Edhi Square or Maidaan-e-Edhi are all options.

Edhi Stadium is too plain for our most important stadium. We need to make the name of the legend and the stadium shine.

What will it do? If PCB really want to do something, then they should donate some money every year or month to Edhi Foundation, but here PCB is asking for funds from ICC :))

Excellent post.

Gaddafi was a friend of pakistan and spoke fearlessly in our favor , thats not how you pay back your friends. Change name of national stadium karachi.

Why are we messing with Gaddafi Stadium's name ??. Edhi was from Karachi so naturally his home topwn stadium, The National Stadium should be renamed to Edhi Stadium or something along those lines.

Gaddafi Stadium's name should remain as it is - no need to change it

I am against naming a public structure against a live person. While the person may be good when you named it, they may turn out to be anti hero later. Americans follow that rule.

While Gaddafi was a good person from pakistan's perspective at the time but now imagine western countries playing at that stadium knowing that their country fought against that dictator. I think its a good move, Edhi's legacy should not be forgotton and grateful nation should name things after him for generations to remember him.
Take it from us, we have half the nation named after Nehru-Gandhi family (not mahatama gandhi)

So Gaddafi did invest money for our cricket and we give reward to someone else who does not have any contribution in building the stadium. How ungrateful and ridiculous is this. Regardless people like or not they should give credit/thanks where its due.

I'd wholeheartedly support such a position. Pakistan cricket needed to scrap Gaddafi's name back in 2011 when he was mercilessly massacring his own people. It isn't a matter of mass propaganda. Libyans despise this man with all their heart for what he did to their people for 30+ years. There will always be several individuals who support him (people still support Assad in Syria for crying out loud) but general consensus is plenty vocal. I'm saddened to even read some of the comments praising Gaddafi. Come on, people.

Giving him the name of the stadium for decades because of his good will towards Pakistan was more than enough. We look like morons for still naming one of our most historic stadiums after him.

Change it to Edhi Stadium. Change it to Iqbal stadium. Jinnah stadium, anything. Just change it already.

Better late than never.

A good idea from the PCB.

PESHAWAR: Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) announced on Sunday that Hockey Club of Pakistan will be renamed to Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium in order to pay tribute to the late philanthropist, who passed away late Friday after a long battle with kidney illness.

In a press release, PHF President Brigadier (retired) Khalid Sajjad Khokhar said, “I feel honoured to announce the renaming of Hockey Club of Pakistan in Karachi as Abdul Sattar Edhi Hockey Stadium.”

Army boot camp for hockey players to kick start on Monday

“PHF believes that renaming of hockey’s biggest facility in Edhi’s hometown would be the most appropriate way to pay tribute to our great national hero,” the statement added.

Edhi started his charitable organisation in 1951, and ran it entirely with private donations. He also turned it into the biggest ambulance service in the world.

PHF plans out Olympics Day events

Chairman of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Najam Sethi has also asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to change the name of the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to Edhi Stadium in order to pay tribute to the late philanthropist.

The Karachi hockey stadium has already been named after him.. Can't have both stadiums in the same city named after the same personality.

Great idea. 2 things will be achieved by Pakistan by doing so -

1. Honor the great man that Edhi was. Future generations will remember the great man, his charity work and it will be a constant reminder.
2. Disassociate itself with a dictator hated by the entire world. This move will actually increase Pakistan's credibility among international circles..

But the Gaddafi Stadium is in Lahore.... :danish

I knowwww.. the posters above were saying that since Edhi sahab is from Karachi then the National Stadium in Karachi should be named in his honour, that is why I posted this.

Lol should have made it clearer

Yup, agreed on that.

How can anyone in their right mind say a dictator of another country Gaddafi did more for Pakistan then the Saint that was Abdul Sitar Eidhi.

Ask the millions of people he has fed, or the children that have grew up in eidhi centres, or the sick he has treated or the thousands of dead bodies he collected, washed and buried himself that who has done more for Pakistan Abdul Sitar Eidhi or Colonel Gaddafi.

Shocking statement and it made me feel genuinely sad that any Pakistani would question what Eidhi has done for the poor compared to an oil rich dictator of another country.

It's a good idea but I think they should choose another stadium, then we'll split into Pakistani calling it edhi stadium while whole world calling it Gaddafi

Qaddafi's legacy isnt black and white and open to debate, but either way we should have changed it the moment the libyan government requested it

Take nothing away from edhi sb but what your saying is just mot reality. Gaddafi did a lot for us in the 70's including bankrolling the start of our nucleur program

Guess then a lot of places should be named
Xi Jinping highway, George Bush airport, Nixon Stadium, Clinton ave, regan bus adda, kerry lugar mohalla , kim jon il mandi , mallika victoria parliament etc etc

Let other people have the names such as malala, abddus salam, edhi , bhagat singh , baccha khan etc. I would have them in India over auranjebs, abdalis etc

Nation becomes the kind of heros it look up to

I support the move, I would rather have stadium named after our national hero than a dictator in some far away country

Why was the Lahore stadium named after Gadaffi, an oppressive dictator anyway? It's terrible for Pakistan's reputation. The name should be changed asap.

Funny, how we tend to focus on these things, these gestures ( read politically motivated gestures) dont do anything to honour his legacy , naming an airport after him or a stadium doesnt mean anything , if pakistanis want to honour him , take up a cause , do what he did , or donate to causes he championed .

Qaddafi Stadium - Name Change - Suggestions ???

It is time that PCB renamed Qaddafi stadium. There is no reason to glorify a dictator who is not even respected in his own country.

Suggestions for a new name ???

My suggestion is to rename it after the greatest poet that Pakistan has produced .... Faiz Ahmed Faiz.

Perhaps it can be called Faiz Ahmed Faiz stadium or maybe just Faiz Stadium,

What do you guys think ???

A lot of stadiums in North America are paid big money by commercial organizations to name after them.

Forget the name change, are they ever going to upgrade this awful looking stadium?

Shouldn't a stadium in Punjab be 60k capacity at least?

Fazal Mahmood cricket stadium assuming he was a Lahori, can't rely on wiki. First superstar of Pakistani cricket, a bona fide legend, brought glory to his country in its infancy and started the fast bowling culture which led to major successes later. Or any other great person from there, not a politician but maybe some legend like Edhi, Faiz or Abdus Salam but should have roots in Lahore.

Leave it as it is

Even though I don’t like gaddafi but There is history attached with the stadium name so let it be

Why do we need to change it?

If we must then "Akmals playground". :uakmal:kakmal

Good suggestions if a new name is ever needed. One of the best enclosures in GSL is named after Fazal Mehmood even now.

IMO Gaddafi doesn't deserve a cricket stadium to be named in his honour 6000 miles away. Many legends from Pakistan as well as the Islamic world would be better candidates, people who changed the world for the better. If you go by son of the soil argument even Bhagat Singh can be a great choice and a stadium in his honour will not just enhance Pakistan's international image but also bring cheer to minorities in the country. Mr. Jinnah respected him a lot and defended him when he was on hunger strike at Lahore jail.

We're not suffering from inferiority complex or hate like India that we have to change name of a place and destroy its identity same way India's Hindu govt. is doing to its many cities replacing Muslim names.

Firstly its Gaddafi not Qaddafi and this is its identity. And it will always remain there as there is a 35+ year background to it.

There are more mportant things to be done which are plaguing our cricket system.

“ Originally Lahore Stadium, the ground was renamed in 1974 in honour of the former Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi following a speech he gave at the 2nd Organisation of the Islamic Conference meeting in Lahore in favour of Pakistan's right to pursue nuclear weapons.[5] The stadium houses the headquarters of the Pakistan Cricket Board.[6]” - Wikipedia

Only right to rename it after the person who deemed Lahore as the Paris of Asia. Mian Mohammad Nawaz Shariff Stadium.

I think I wouldn't mind having it as Abdus Salam stadium. I am disappointed why we cannot recognize one of the greatest scientist of Pakistani origin and be proud of him. Or maybe just use a sahabi's name like Khalid Bin Waleed stadium, that would add some fighting spirit to the host teams.

Agree with one poster who said that it is probably more important to improve the facilities then concentrate on the naming of the stadium. I am very sure if there is a resolution in parliament, the most voted names there would be Bhutto stadium, Shaheed Benazir stadium, Kulsum nawaz stadium etc etc. I would rather leave it as it is now.

Not only that but he sold us out and tried to implicate us in the illegal nuclear weapon know-how scandals.

Lot of British generals who ransacked and plundered Muslims, Sikh generals who killed more Muslims tghan British like Hari Singh Nalwa have a whole city named after him (Haripur). Why certain liberals forget about the name of places on monsters of history?

If we start changing names and become like India than not just stadiums but a lot of places will be forced change to suit certain interest groups.
