More than 600 Indian theater artists have urged the public to vote against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming general elections.

The theater artists across India requested the electorate in a joint statements “to help and safeguard the constitution and our syncretic secular ethos”
The appeal states: "Today, that very idea of India is under threat. Today, song, dance, laughter is under threat. Today, our Constitution is under threat. The institutions that have to nurture argument, debate and dissent have been suffocated."
“The coming general elections as the "most critical in the history of independent India,” it added further.
It further prompted the public to vote against BJP, and its allies.
The statement signatories include famed Indian theater artists like Amol Palekar, Astad Deboo, Arshia Sattar, Danish Hussain, Malika Taneja and others.
Indian Lok Sabha election to be held on April 11, 2019 and will go on till May 19.
