Navdeep Saini - Potential express pace bowler from India

Saini.jpg

Abu Dhabi, Oct 4 (IANS): Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) Navdeep Saini had bowled a beamer at Rahul Tewatia in the last over of Rajasthan Royals' (RR) innings that hit the latter on the neck and sent him crashing to the ground on Saturday.

While Tewatia got back on his feet and smashed consecutive sixes off the next two balls, social media users caught the words written on Saini's shoes -- "F*** it! Bowl Fast" -- while the bowler checked up on Tewatia.

While the TV camera focussed on Tewatia, the frame also caught Saini's shoes -- and the words "F*** it! Bowl Fast".

It is not the first time such a message has appeared in a cricket context. Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc, who played for RCB in 2015, sported a similar message on his wrist band during a Test series against Pakistan in December 2019.

Saini and the rest of the bowlers managed to restrict RR to 154/6 in 20 overs before captain Virat Kohli's unbeaten 72 off 53 balls helped RCB reach the target with eight wickets to spare.

Probably one of the naturally strongest players around. he is so fit and strong. If he improves on a few more variations he can be a force.

Amazing story. Was playing tennis ball cricket in local leagues for 100 rupees a match. Gambhir spotted have him, fought with Delhi selectors to get him in the Ranji team, backed him fully and here he is now.

Interested to see how he goes in Test cricket as his natural length is on the fuller side and seam the ball.

That's where veterans like Ishant Sharma, shami and bumrah will help, if saini plays with them for a year or two he will prosper.

Yup Gambhir went all the way to support him, should be our scout instead of a politician.

According to a report, Navdeep Saini is likely to make his test debut in the Border Gavaskar Trophy in December.

Excellent news but yes Ishant is a huge loss.

Saini is capable replacement I believe. I believe in this guy's red ball ability. Good luck Saini. He is not a total Pace toh pace yaaar. But he has skills to back it up which is good.

Went for 81 runs in first ODI vs Aus with 1 wicket and for 70 runs in 7 overs with no wicket in 2nd ODI. Yes he is new to international cricket but, 28 years old with good amount of domestic experience so Indian selectors would have expected a better transition.

He is rubbish. India's obsession with pace is going to hurt them. I am sure there are better and smarter medium pacers than this "fast" bowler in Indian domestic circuit. Should stick to your strengths.

Not impressed so far.

But as many have learnt, domestic to international cricket is a big jump.

Gives Musa Khan a run for his money when it comes to mediocrity. At least Musa has age on his side.

According to Mamoon, IPL is on par with world T20 wc, but we have not seen Saini’s IPL skills at international level, especially in the death overs as Kohli didn’t want to bowl him at all today :)))

We saw his death overs skills today, went for 15 in the last over, bowling two knee high full tosses to Maxwell who smoked them for 6 :))

He won't get many chances. Even Shardul Thakur was better than him. :inti

I would reserve my judgement for now. Bowling to Warner, Finch and Smith in Australia (that too on an SCG patta) is not the easiest of the things to do.

Yes he could have done a lot better but it'll be extremely harsh to write him off now.

He was always a good red ball and T20 bowler. No one said he was special in odi?
Anyway bowling bad on these Pattas can be forgiven. I will wait for the tests and future odi's to judge him. He doesn't have the brains imo to be a skilful bowler. He would still be handy as a 3rd seamer in helpful condtions.

Agreed. Pakistani fans have no patience lol. They should worry about their own team.

I am not even bothered by these huge scores. It is expected on such pancakes.

Batting of middle order was my issue.

You can forgive getting smashed on pattas in Australia sure. But Saini was bowling full tosses, beamers, and half trackers. I agree that better bowlers have been destroyed by Warner, Finch and Smith at home, but poor bowling is poor bowling.

This attitude is the reason India is quite successful today. Despite being mauled senseless, Indian fans are defending their heroes with whatever they can think of, while apne Pakistani bhai log end up getting personal with the players and berate them to the point where they start questioning their career choice as cricketers.

Might have had two poor games, but he is express pace for sure. Exciting to watch him bowl honestly speaking.

He is 145/147 at max

Express is 150-155. Only Archer, Nortje and Lockie Furgoeson are express. Mark Wood is just below them.

Only Nortje and Ferguson consistently bowl 150 clicks. Archer can but rarely does it. Wood, Starc, Cummins, Shaheen, Bumrah all stay in the mid 140s.

The biggest problem he has is the number of full tosses that he bowls, he will cost India dearly in a match if he bowls two beamers which is possible as he just can't control his full tosses.

Bold of you to assume that his beamers were accidental.

Not international class bowler

Pandya is a better bowler when he is fully fit

Who you're bowling to shouldn't affect your accuracy. He was all over the place, from short and wide, to beamers.

Bold of you to assume that his beamers were accidental.

If the beamers weren't accidental then it's a bigger concern.

Bowling sharp bouncers and aiming nose is a SKILL, whereas bowling beamers knowingly in cricket is a crime.

Its a good job he didnt bowl all 10 overs he should had the record of most runs in 10 overs :)

Debuting for India in 3rd Test - as announced by BCCI

Hes gonna be break Naseems records I feel... no not the speed records but the one about being the most expensive test pacer going wicketless :vk2

Has taken his maiden Test wicket

Last Wkt: Will Pucovski lbw b Navdeep Saini 62(110) - 106/2 in 34.2 ov.

He's just another Naseem Shah in making. Sprays it all over and absolutely no discipline.

I'd happily take Nattu over this overhyped Saini any day. He can challenge batsmen with his disciplined attack though a tad bit slower than this guy.

Naseem shah at least has the pace he was mostly bowling 135 to 140 kph

Irrespective of the pace, a bowler who only bowls two lengths - either too full or short will never succeed at the International level, and from what I've seen of Saini in the white ball cricket here, I am convinced he is that kinda bowler.

He might get a wicket or two occasionally like the one of Puc, which honestly should have been dispatched for a straight boundary, but will almost always go for runs thus providing zero control to the captain

tyron_woodley so not an ODI bowler, not a T20 bowler, and not a Test bowler either. What is he?

I think Pakistan and India are learning not to debut fast bowlers in test matches in SENA!

Saini is a 5 or 6 bowler option in pecking order for Indian team. He got played because of injuries.
No one can expect a bowler who is not your first choice to come straight away and get a good top order out.. either u have heightened expectations or you are a headless chicken

You judging him based on his debut test innings in a flat patta? Didn't do too bad compared to some 15 year old bloke who was hyped to the Moon not too long ago.

Is bowling with an economy of 5 better than economy of 3.4 on debut .Dude stop smoking what you are smoking

Relax. Fans were also going after Shaw in the first day night test he played where everyone failed. Didn't see you defending him there? :inti

Well he’s 28 and Saini has also been hyped a lot based on the idea he’s a ready made product.

The 17 year old bloke who was hyped was hyped on potential, no one called him good enough already to play against Australia in Australia which most thought was foolhardy. Only reason he got the callup was because we didn’t really have anyone else except maybe Tabish Khan.

The 17 yo still has that potential by the way, but needs to stay away from Waqar Younis. Right now he’s pretty crap, but he has a long 10 years still before he gets to Saini’s age. So don’t understand the comparison.

Let Saini bowl outside Sydney before making any conclusion on him. He can be useful on Brisbane type wickets with extra pace and bounce.

Navdeep Saini has complained of pain in his groin. He is currently being monitored by the BCCI medical team.

From BCCI

Saini, Siraj and Natarajan are all releasing the ball from a low height.

It’s like watching Pakistan!

Should stick to LOIs

Time to try Prasidh Krishna,Ishan Porel and Nagarkoti

Kohli hasnt build any bench strength in home season

Saini was at his best around 2017-18 period. But as is with Indian management, they bring in the players after they are done and dusted, especially with fast bowlers.
Saini can at best be a good support. But if he can put in the extra effort and bowl at his fastest which is around 148ish, he can still serve the team.

I would really like the management to try out Prasidh Krishna. Bowlers like Krishna, Mavi, Kotti, Avesh etc still have to spend some more time in FC, but they sure should be tried out in smaller ODI's and tests.

I don't mean play him immediately but hes the one for the future.Certainly quick

Another name that comes to mind : Avesh Khan

Basically 140+ bowlers
At his height, Nagarkoti has to be really skilled to trouble SENA batsmen. Avesh Khan is good prospect though he hasn’t done much yet in any A tour opportunities. He is currently bowling well with good pace in the SMAT T20 championships though.

Not interested in a debate on Naseem's age here.

Stick to Saini.

I hope they pick Natarajan too.
India need his yorkers to add some teeth in the bowling dept.

UPDATE: Navdeep Saini suffered a left shoulder injury while fielding during the second T20I vs Sri Lanka on 28th July.

He might have to undergo scans to ascertain the extent of injury. His progress is being monitored by the medical staff.

Kent Cricket is delighted to announce the signing of India international fast bowler Navdeep Saini for up to three LV= Insurance County Championship and five Royal London Cup matches, subject to visa and regulatory approval.

The 29-year-old has represented his country in all forms of the game after making his IT20 debut for India in August 2019.

Hailed as one of the top five fastest Indian bowlers in world cricket, Saini is capable of clocking 95mph and has taken 148 first-class wickets at 28.80 with a career bowling economy of 2.92.

The right-armer will wear his preferred shirt number of 96 and will follow in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid to become the second Indian Test cricketer to play for the county.

On joining Kent Cricket, Saini said: “It’s a great opportunity to play county cricket and I’m looking forward to giving my all for Kent.”

Kent’s Director of Cricket, Paul Downton, said: “In a year when it’s been difficult to take wickets, we’re excited to have the opportunity to add a fast bowler of Navdeep’s quality to our squad.’’

Its sad that at the peak of his career, Shardul thakur was preferred over him because, apparently thakur can bat a bit.

Atul Sharma MK2 is back... at 29 years old, his time has gone. Fun seeing another Indian Phaast bowler bite the dust. Long may it continue!

Why didn't he play against Ireland and England? All these phaast bowlers are coming and going like mumbai local trains now. Bhuvi, Bumrah, Shami are the only reliable bowlers at the moment. Even Siraj averages over 30 in test cricket. :inti
