What's new

New Zealand [427/8d] beat England [58 & 320] by an innings and 49 runs in the first Test

Poms will not mind kiwis getting 100 runs lead here , anything over 150 would make it very tough for Poms.

Strewth. What happened?

Not often that a test match is decided by day one.

Looking at the pitch it isn't exactly a green mamba. Also Boult bowled in the first session and right now I'm watching the match under lights when the ball usually does a whole lot more.

So either Boult was otherworldly or England batted like schoolboys

Williamson's solid defense is so good to watch at the moment. As far as defensive technique goes he is without a doubt the best of the fabulous 4 eventhough he is easily inferior to Kohli and Smith overall.

Boult was awesome.

Well done NZ, in Test cricket the match is not totally dead until it is dead, and England still have a minute chance of a comeback, but seems very unlikely and NZ will look to be winning this match within 3.5 days I think.

Looks like D/N test has not made any difference in spectator interest in NZ tests. Disappointing to see just a sparse crowd.

I think ECB needs to stop wasting money and every ones time by sending England on tour during the winter, it embarrassing every time they leave england in last 4/5 years barring the odd miracle result.

The worst Test humiliation in a long list of them under Bayliss.

Pakistan should fancy their chances against this batting lineup in May/June but our batting is as feeble.

Key will be Azhar. If he can perform we can win.

Does anyone know how KW uses such soft hands? I mean his edges hardly carry.

Embarrassing performance from Poms. 200 run lead should be enough for NZ to win this game.

Brilliant match.

Trevor Bayliss’s brainless Uber Attack model falling over again in Tests.

Loosen the bottom hand and open the face slightly.

It will also make it difficult to drive as the bat tends to turn in hands.. Good technique if trying to be defensive and looking to milk bowlers.. Excellent technique if facing swing bowling

It will fail anywhere over a long time. This approach of picking bowlers for their batting ability will take them nowhere.. They need to find 10 specialists in their starting 11

New Zealand are pulling away from England quite a bit. The advantage is that they don't have to push for runs and there is lots of time left in the game. NZ now 229/4 and lead by 171.

I take it that you refer to Moeen and Woakes. Moeen is the best spinner in County Cricket, sadly. Woakes would get into England for his bowling alone.

If I was whoever-the-Kiwi-captain-is I would declare overnight.

England's bowling will be better though. Their batting seems to be suffering from the shift towards T20 cricket, a lot of these guys would probably look a lot better in that format.

I think Cook may be finished. Stoneman is half a class short of test standard. Root is in a slump. Bairstow is being handicapped with the gloves. There are three number sixes and we don’t know who to put where.

It’s a far cry from Strauss, Cook, Trott, KP, Bell, Collingwood and Prior.

Dropping Bell a few years ago is starting to look like a big mistake now. I know he was hardly a great player, he was just average to good, but his years of experience of genuine Test cricket playing conditions and knowing how to weather new ball pressure has been sorely missed. 3 wickets in the first 15 overs seems to be the norm nowadays, then it’s just a matter of whether Root and the lower order players can rescue the innings.

This match meanwhile has been a letdown. England look like they are going to very undeservedly get away with a draw.

Hah! The way England are playing, NZ could declare now and win by an innings,

After watching the English first innings, no doubt Kohli & Co. are super excited about their chances in the upcoming series.

yeah i was referring to Moeen and Woakes.. Moeen may be the best spinner in the county circuit. That is because of the counties obsession with finding spinners who can bat. Spinners are never considered a wicket taking option.. Otherwise you will have better spinners..

Why are they still batting? Shouldnt they declare? Or are they sure there wont be anymore rain breaks for the remainder of the match?

320 run lead is plenty

NZ should declare now if they want to win, lead is considerable. Considering weather they have limited time,

I think, Kiwis will try to bat till 30 minutes to dinner - then they have around 140 overs to get 10 wickets, allowing Boult/Southee to bowl with new ball in twilight.

That's drinks and New Zealand have declared with a lead of 369

Normally that would be enough time. But with rain threat, I hope they do not regret the late declaration.

Not a great declaration to be honest. I thought they were going to give England 20 minutes this session to bat, so the ball would still be new for the night session. Instead, they just wasted a whole lot of time and the ball won't be so new later on. They will, of course, have the option of a second new ball tomorrow night if they need it.

I hope they bowl out Eng in less than 50 runs :D

soft dismissal. Poms are losing this to Kiwis 8 wickets in total.

2 down England..

It seems a matter of time tbh. Roooot is there though. It is to be seen if he registers a hundred or a 50.

Root is looking good, which roughly translates as he will get to his half century tonight and then get out, or will be at the crease for the first ball tomorrow morning and will be tipped for a match-saving century however will then get out for 80ish.

Either drop Cook to #3 or he should retire to his farm.

Silly Stoney, had a golden chance there.

Can’t we try a different opener alongside Stoneman and then have Cook at 3, Root at 4, Malan at 5 etc. Seems like a much more natural batting order.

Root gets to 50. Start the countdown to his wicket.

To be fair didn’t he pick up a rather stinging injury the ball before this time? But yes an absolute joke. Always just before the close or just after the restart as well. Disappointing!!

He should have played a blockathon kind of inning. He would have never reached 50 and hence never got out. Could have saved a test scoring a 40 odd off 300 balls.

I dont understand what is this love for Root with 50? Is he looking for most fifties record?

Unless rain intervenes again, its now about damage limitation for England.

Bob Willis's rant on the 1st inns had me in stitches: looking at the scorecard, I've seen fewer rings (0s) at the Olympics."
