New Zealand wicket-keeper batsman BJ Watling is in doubt for the first Test against West Indies at Seddon Park after suffering a hamstring niggle.

Watling could miss the opening Test against West Indies starting on Thursday, 3 December, after New Zealand head coach Gary Stead confirmed that the wicket-keeper picked up a “hamstring niggle” in the opening round of their domestic List A tournament.

New Zealand have called up Devon Conway as cover for Watling, although his debut itself is in doubt after a spectacular showing from Will Young in the tour game for New Zealand A. Conway topped the run charts in the 2019 Plunket Shield season with 701 runs including a spectacular 327*.

He is also the top run-scorer in the ongoing Plunket Shield season with 410 runs at an average of 58.57. Conway’s impressive numbers in domestic cricket and a decent debut series in the T20Is against West Indies has earned him a call-up to the Test side. He will now compete with Young for a place in the XI if Watling is ruled out.

Stead said that the Blackcaps would make a call on Watling’s readiness on the eve of the game, but it is likely that he will miss the Test. If so, the head coach confirmed that Tom Blundell would slot in at No.6 and keep the wickets.

This will leave an opening spot empty and one of Conway or Young could slot in there. Young, who was named in the initial squad, is favourite to open alongside Tom Latham, according to Stead.

To think they couldnt get any broadcasters in UK for this in white ball now test makes me think pakistan series will also not be on TV

Easy series win for NZ i think, they are a pretty strong side at home and WI test side is getting better but is still average at best.

NZ should be pretty disappointed if they dont finish the home season with 2 series whitewashes.

Hard to see WI batsmen coping with NZ seamers in these conditions.

Tough task ahead for West Indies.

It would be a huge achievement if they could even manage a draw in this match.

West Indies won the toss and chose to field.

NZ 21/1

Shannon Garbriel dismissed the debutant Will Young for 5(11).

Just tuned in. Has any rain happened early as the score is just 46/1 in 2nd session?

NZ are batting better than England. England were shaky against West Indies.

NZ - 55/1 after 20 overs.

If the pitches are like this when Pakistan plays Abbas is going to be a massive threat.

Day 1: 3rd Session

NZ - 241/2 (77)

CRR: 3.13

Williamson hundred coming up.

Same old story. Home team bats first and hammers the opposition in the comforts of their backyard.

Day 1: Stumps

NZ - 243/2 (78)

CRR: 3.12

Not true. In n.z if you win toss it's good to bowl first always
However I feel they served a patta for west Indies looooooool.

When India and Pakistan tour they doctor the pitch and prepare a green mamba.

New Zealand finished Day 1 of the first Test against West Indies at 243/2 with skipper Kane Williamson unbeaten on 97 in Hamilton.

An unbroken 75-run partnership between Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor helped New Zealand survive a good spell of bowling late in the day from West Indies. Williamson remained unbeaten three short of a century.

Tom Latham and Williamson had laid the foundation for New Zealand's big batting day as the duo stitched together a 154-run partnership for the second wicket. Latham was dismissed on 86 by Kemar Roach before Williamson and Taylor took centre stage.

Earlier in the day, a drizzle delayed the toss and reduced the game to two extended sessions. With all the rain around, Jason Holder opted to bowl first after winning the toss on a green pitch. Nine balls in, Shannon Gabriel rapped debutant opener Will Young on the pads and confidently went for a review only to find the impact being outside off-stump.

The early loss of a review was compounded when an edge from Young, yet again off Gabriel, went between the wicket-keeper and first slip without either reacting. However, Gabriel made amends next ball as he had Young trapped in front.

Kane Williamson joined Tom Latham in the middle and the duo fought off some quality West Indies bowling. Just nine runs came in the seven overs after Young's dismissal as New Zealand consolidated.

Kane Williamson opened up soon after with a couple of boundaries on the off-side off Kemar Roach and back-to-back boundaries off Gabriel a little later. Gaining confidence from Williamson, Latham started playing some shots and hit Alzarri Joseph for a four and a six off successive balls.

With New Zealand's score in the forties, West Indies missed a crucial chance to make a breakthrough. Latham nicked one behind to the keeper off Jason Holder, but the skipper didn't review the decision only for Hot Spot to show a mark in replays later. At the tea break, New Zealand were 99/1, with Latham and Williamson appearing quite solid.

The opener completed his half-century with a lovely pull off Roach, but couldn't convert it into a 12th Test ton as Kemar Roach returned for a spell in the 56th over and cleaned him up from around the wicket with a brilliant delivery.

Ross Taylor and Williamson counterpunched with a quick start to their partnership, smashing five fours in the first 28 balls that yielded 25 runs. West Indies, however, came back strong with the ball swinging around and tested the batters. Late in the day, Darren Bravo was taken off on a stretcher after he hurt his ankle while chasing the ball to the fence. Taylor and Williamson stood firm amid all the drama.

Are you saying flat pitches will suit abbas and the rest of the bowling line up

It's not really that flat, the WI bowlers haven't been up to par. I'm guessing the NZ bowlers will get a lot out of this same pitch when WI bat.

Ken can get a triple here, there is enough time left in the game.

Why are they still blocking? Blundell came in and scored 14 off 63, now Mitchell is 9 off 35.

Consecutive boundaries for Williamson. He gets his double hundred.

Well done.

NZ - 408/5 (125.3 overs).

Williamson is cutting loose now. He is on 221*.

Aggression from NZ.

429/6.

I think they may declare way before that.

This is 2nd session of day 2.

There are still 45 overs left today, he can bat for another 29!and allow his pacers 14 overs against the WIN openers - then, they can use 14 overs old ball tomorrow morning. WIN will go to lunch 5-6 down.

Per fect time to declare. have 25 overs against the west indies batsmen.

Good to see west indies showing some fight hope pakistan are watching

nz seam attack is too good, southee has swing, boult has pace, wagner is a left armer with stamina and jamieson gets it to move and bounce alarming off a length. in these conditions i don't think many teams would fare too well against these four.

southee has swing i agree but he is slow.
boult has pace? what games have you been watching
jamieson gets easy bounce due to this height. yes and he can move the ball. he can also bat.
wagner doest get tired even after bowling short pitch deliveries continuously.

very diverse and functional seam attack for n.z conditons. will get exposed in asia though.

pakistan can match these 4 if they play

hasan ali
naseem
shaheen
junaid khan or sameen gul.

hasan with the movement off the pitch
shaheen with his bounce and ability to move the ball
naseem with his pace
junaid with his accuracy although his action is dubious. i do rate junaid khan very highly.

i dont know why pakistanis discredit junaid. he has nothing wrong.

We needed Sami Aslam to just stand there all day and score 50 runs until the next new ball.

Yaad tou aati hogi...

got to say i am extremely impressed with n. z in home conditions.

they know how to win in n.z period.

i really want to see if pakistan can beat them. You need to prepare well for n.z conditions to win there.

i look at their batting and honestly their batting is vastly underrated.

yea we know they have kane but they also have these guys:
taylor : averages 46.10. close to 55 at home.
latham: averages 42 in tests
nichols: averages 38
blundell: averages 46 albeit he is new to the game
CDG : averages 37 in tests

not to mention their tail can bat. guys like jamieson averages 19 in first class in batting and has bowling average of 23 in first class. Still unproven outside N.z but for those conditions in n.z, he is extremely handy.

after india and australia i must say n.z is the toughest place to tour and win. you need to win the toss there otherwise its all over.

aussies and saffers are the only teams that seem to crush n.z in their home for some strange reason. more of a mental block i would say.

God save Pakistan from this bowling attack

Not to forget WI even had practice matches before the series which Pak doesnt have other than the one they scheduled just now over A team match. Not much training too.

If we beat NZ still the banter will be unreal on this forum. Absolute madness

West Indies need to score 381 runs to avoid an innings defeat.

It doesn't seem likely.

WIN needs another 109 to avoid innings defeat from Williamson.

NZ bowling looks rock solid. Pak better have plans ready to counter this attack.

I can already see Abid Ali flashing outside off against Boult/Southee...
