New Zealand will be looking to get this series off to a winning start. West Indies had a stunning victory over England back in August so this will not be easy for the hosts.

New Zealand have won the toss and are bowling first.

New Zealand XI: Jeet Raval, Tom Latham, Kane Williamson (C), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Tom Blundell (WK), Colin De Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult

West Indies XI: Kraigg Braithwaite, Kieran Powell, Shai Hope, Sunil Ambris, Roston Chase, Shimron Hetmyer, Shane Dowrich (WK), Jason Holder (C), Kemar Roach, Miguel Cummins, Shannon Gabriel

Apparently our first Test in 8 months :))

Can't remember who it was against, maybe SA?

So we last played in March, we haven't played an away Test series the whole year and wont be doing so until possibly May next year :))

Our next scheduled away Test series is against Pakistan (Oct-Nov).

That's a 2 year gap between away tests.

At Basin, I feel it's a negative call for NZ to put visitors in, particularly on a sunny morning without much rain threat.

Yup, weather is crucial. Always a mistake to bowl first if the the forecast is sunny. What's above is more important than what's below because the sun will dry up the pitch anyway.

at least you lot got to have cricket every month, we forgot we played this game after CT

NZ need to sack Williamson and appoint a captain that will form an identity. They're a soulless team under Williamson.

Something drastic, like Windies winning this series, would have to happen for that to take place. But it will be for the better in the long run.

If NZ lose home series and Williamson doesn't perform with the bat he could be sacked.

He's not bad tactically but he doesn't seem to have the personality of a leader.

I don't know, NZC don't seem too worried about Test cricket. They might use the lack of Test cricket as an excuse.

I for one am happy to see cricket on Sky again.

Pathetic technique from Hetmyer- gets out trying to fend off a short ball on the cusp of lunch.

Made to look like a tailender.

Bhai, I know you rate him and I like the guy but come on that was pretty poor technique.

It wasn't. Experience say bol raha hun. He couldn't move either way or duck because of the length. Though a very good puller, with lunch in sight, he wouldn't wanna risk pulling and that's the only thing you can do with that length or hope it misses your bat.

The ball was angled in to his face and just short of a good length. It's nearly impossible to leave because instinct tells you wouldn't have enough time to move laterally or vertically to create enough space and his mindset was that of leaving the ball instead of taking it on.

Agree to disagree.

It's not just the fact he got out, but the way he got out. It was a well directed delivery but it wasn't as good as he made it look.

WI crumbling on their own.

4 for Wagner, he could end up with 7-8 the way things are going.

Wagner is so underrated. He has done better than both Southee and Boult in the last 2 years for New Zealand, yet no one mentions him as one of the best bowlers around in the world right now. Averages 23.51 with a SR of 46.9 in the last 2 wickets in 17 tests and has 76 wickets. That is world class stuff. Not sure why he is never mentioned.

Poor show by WI - they are out of this Test almost. This wicket should get faster on day 2 & 3, means if Kiwis don’t blow it in tmro 1st session, they should enjoy the best 2 days for batting.

A total of 350+ would have put WI is front seat

Softest five-fer I've seen in a while.

Just a sad state of affairs with Windies. Where is all the ICC money going?

Make that six wickets now!

On a hattrick for the second time this innings.

I have to say based on WI’s performance in recent past, possibility of 5-0 in Ashes & that 2-0 by SRL isn’t fluke .....

Awfully considerate of the WI to turn in performances like this so that when we make our debut we don't need to live up to much......

Rubbish from the WI, unless we play worse this match is as good as over in two seessions into day 1

Nz trying to get their confidence up before they face the 2nd strongest Pakistan side to have ever reached those shores.

Wagner has some pretty serious career statistics. Underrated.

Exactly and in the fab 4 bowlers thread, his name was not even mentioned once. 79 wickets in 17 tests at an average of 23 and SR of 46 is quite amazing in the last 2 years.

Unbelievable from the WI. Every one of them gave their wicket away on a perfect batting pitch. They all look like tailenders.

Sometimes in 90s, against Kiwis at Auckland (?) WI finished Day 1 at 280/0 or so (or 277/1), then lost 20 (or 19) for 200 or so, to lose by 10 wickets inside 4 days.

Am abysmal display of batting today on an excellent batting pitch.

WI still a weak side.

Their captain is barely worth his place with bat or ball and that says it all. WI need help from ICC & other boards but no-one will give it & WI will be a t20 franchise player only producer or will need to be shifted to Test Division 2 /FC status in 5-10 years.

Serious investment in their pitches & domestic professionalism needed to turn around the tide of American sports/athletics.

Windies just couldn't handle the short pitched stuff, although a few of their batsmen, especially Kraigg Brathwaite, made a meal of things. A good start was wasted.

However its not expected when you grow up on underprepared, horribly slow, low bounce pitches in the Caribbean.

Is Cummins really the best Windies have to offer? I think not.

If Ross Taylor scores a 100 here, he'll go level with Martin Crowe and Kane for most Test 100s for NZ.

Is Cummins really the best Windies have to offer? I think not.

Joseph is more promising, don't know why they won't play him. Also, what happened to the tall bowler at the U19 World Cup Chemar Holder? He looked promising too.

I jinxed that lmao, I already had a thread ready to post :)))

What a inning, changed the match upside down completely. Was off and I was watching it from morning while lying on the bed. Great morning for me. Congratulations Aman

Thanks, but this Test has been over since the second session on day 1 :))

Hetmyer does not look convincing against the short ball (again).

Good that this match is being telecasted in India and that too by star sports! Now I can watch pak vs newzealand series on TV.

West indies should have scored more runs in first innings! They are batting better in this innings so far!

Hetmyer seems like a really talented player!! The shot he played against boult was really beautiful!!

Dismal pitch, no wonder test cricket is struggling in NZ.
Test cricket in general is pretty boring. Actually starting to think the way forward with cricket is LOIs.

Tests don't draw and lose A LOT of money.

Really want a proper T20 league in NZ, that would be the best way to promote the game in NZ.

West Indies will be ruing that dreadful collapse on Day 1 as they batted better in the 2nd innings.
