New Zealand Vs Sri Lanka 1st Test Match thread

So the first match about to get underway in an hour. Should be interesting. New Zealand favourites since they are at home, but you don't know, this young Sri Lanka team could cause a surprise.

I for one am looking to see how this turns out. Match predictions?

pulling all nighter because of exams but might watch this on mute

Was the last Test in Dunedin the one where NZ scored 600+ batting first? I wonder of the SRL decision is a defensive one to avoid the Kiwi seamers early on...

My 3rd team is Lanka so I hope they win, sadly it's unlikely.

was hoping SL batted first. wanted to see jayasundera bat.

not too much swing or seam movement so far.

Its a green top, but SL bowlers not doing enough so far. NZ openers have started nicely.

Want to see how Chameera does here, very pacy and did well in the warmup match.

Latham has the best defensive technique in the world.

Not that he isn't great offensively but Rahane and Williamson have a slight edge currently.

Can someone please explain why SL are playing in NZ back so soon? I remember that series (where Sanga hit that amazing Double ) was not so long ago. I don't recall NZ playing in SL after that, or am I missing something here?

Thanks.

20 overs bowled. No Chameera so far. What the hell is Mathews playing at? I hope they haven't picked an unfit bowler.

Sri Lankan bowlers have been awful.

Don't they know you have to pitch the ball up especially on the first morning ?

Make them drive, what's this short and wide stuff ? Just bizarre, really poor stuff.

Because its Sri Lanka. Any time an international cricket stadium goes 2 months without a game the entire Sri Lankan squad and backroom staff appear fully kitted out of nowhere and start a 5 Test. 9 ODI and 1 t20 series.

Then they head to India for dinner and desert with a 3 ODI series thrown in for good measure and await the next ground that calls them in its time of need.

They have wasted the new ball and any movement they could have extracted in the air or off the pitch.

Far cry from the days of Chaminda Vaas or even Nuwan Kulasekara...

Surprised Chameera was not given the new cherry, Lakmal and Pradeep have been ordinary. Lakmal was bowling scrambled seam meaning the ball was getting roughed up whilst Pradeep was trying to swing it...but then you'd want the new ball as shiny as possible ! No planning or coordination whatsoever.

Nothing special in him. AVG of 50 in SL FC = Avg of 30 in international matches. Vithanage is the only good talent but he chokes a lot like McCullum. Vandersay is a leggie but he isn't playing. Nothing exciting here.

People were hyping so much Chameera . He is no better than Dilhara Fernando, he atleast bowled faster and his action never gave away his shortball, yorker or length ball. Innings loss is on cards. Missing Prasad and Kusal Bonds Perera here but its not like they were gonna make a huge difference anyway.

1 year man its not too bad. Can't be worse as facing India every 4 months and Pakistan every every 6 months. I wish SL plays Ireland or Afghanistan cons but even WI don't bring any money so there is no way SL is inviting Ireland or Afghanistan to face SL.

Buffet bowling from Sri Lanka in Dunedin on a green top and from West Indies on a green tinged pitch in Hobart.

We may criticise Pakistani bowlers on here but I hope we won't bowl this bad next year, especially if there's a bit of assistance from the conditions.

One can expect Wahab to bang the ball in regardless of the pitch conditions.
Amir could be the difference, though.

Someone at stuff trolling Guptill :))

Watching Santner batting for the first time.. looks compact! great prospect..

is this sensible batting from the kiwis? i know they are a better team but this is just throwing ur advantage away.

Interesting aman giving it to our lot for being arrogant in their approach, this sri lankan bowling is pretty awful yet the kiwis are batting like the game is already won and they can just have a swing.

SL always expected to struggle on this tour and their in experienced bowling has been found wanting already 1 day into the series.

I guess even if we had Prasad it would have been 390 all out or something, instead of 8/409. How much difference can one guy make when there are boundary leaking machines like Pradeep and Chameera at the other end?

The best Sri Lankan pace attack would be Prasad, Lakmal, Eranga, Mathews. Hardly world class but enough to at least put up respectable performances away from home. Pradeep, much as I love him for his hilarious incompetence, and Chameera, are just not good enough at this time.

Nah, they play like this against every team. That arrogant comment was based off what a lot of Aussies were saying on another site.

Not a fan of bringing school boy cricketers into the national team. He averages 30 in FC with 1 century , 1 half-century and verages 18 in List A. How is this guy supposed to play well in NZ ? Stupid SLC brain. Should have brought in Roshen Silva(I know, another Silva).

Half decent start by SL. Karunaratne is a very tidy player.
Its only a matter a time you feel though before Boult or southee make inroads.

Trial by fire.
Kid just slapped Boult for four. Not a bad start.

School boy gone without scoring without double digit figures, supriseeeeee

And there goes Mendis. Was up against it. Here comes Jayasundera. Let's see what the hype is about.

Top talented school cricketers in SL are generally like NCAA athletes, they have good raw talent and most of the players playing for the top schools will end up playing for a FC team soon as they graduate. Chandimal has the best school record, followed by Dilshan. But not all of them end up becoming good enough to play international cricket. Talent is one thing but converting into a developed skill is another thing.

No hype in Jayasundara. Watch out for Vithanage, he is the real talent, but stupid and might get out very earlier on.

Ah man. I was looking forward to watching him bat. Poor shot to get out. Oh well.

I'll keep an eye out for vithanage.

McCullum needs to do drop the captaincy ASAP, he's not going to win a series against Aus the way he's leading our side.

It's selfish of him to carry on when there is another player who could gain greatly from this series and the next against Aus.

Gonna get a real hammering and a half this series. Hopefully at least a few guys can put up some decent performances.

Its about limited overs match, SL has always been a poor Test side even with Sanga, Mahela, Murali and Vaas. Can only expect to do well in Lois. Poor Prasad is injured, last time useless Thisara injured him during practice before WC and malnourished Barry Bonds isn't in the side either. Can't wait to watch Kushal Silva play ODI with sr of 60. Crapugedara is in the squad as well along with Carrom boy  Epic pounding awaits.

Not to worry my fwend we'll hammer em in the T20s. We'll have the last laugh. You know what they say. He who laughs last, laughs longest.
