New Zealand tour of Bangladesh to play 2 Tests (2023)

Bangladesh: 273/5 (82.5) CRR: 3.28
They lead by 267 runs as the 1st session of Day 4 in going on. That is some good stuff from Bangladesh and this lead will trouble Kiwis big time.

Bangladesh has extended its lead to 284 runs but they have lost 7 wickets now.
The score is 291/7.
Take that lead past 300 at least and then Bangladesh has a huge chance to get these Kiwis all out and win this test.

332 is the target for the NZ team if the fine (saliva incident) is not added . Would be a great contest hopefully.

The target for Kiwis is 332. Tough task ahead for them. I think Bangladesh has good chance to win this one here.

Latham is gone and Kiwis are 1 down. Bangladesh is in this game big time now.
NZ 1/1 after 1 over.

New Zealand has been taken to cleaners by Bangladesh. Total domination at the moment from the Bengal tigers.
NZ score is 60/5 now. The third session is going on and they still have a whole 1 day tomorrow to win it.

Nothing is more beautiful then watching 4ft 5 inch crazy Bengali, bowl some unplayable left arm spin.

Bangladesh need 5 wicket to win

New Zealand is 111/7 and needs 221 runs more to win. Bangladesh's win seems guaranteed. Fabulous stuff this is from Bangladeshi bowlers.

BAN 310 & 338
NZ 317 & 113/7 (49) CRR: 2.31
Day 4: Stumps - New Zealand need 219 runs
Bangladesh is winning this one surely.

At Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, Bangladesh: Bangladesh 310 & 338 (Najmul Hossain Shanto 105, Mushfiqur Rahim 67, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 50no; Ajaz Patel 4-148) met the Black Caps 317 & 113-7 (Daryl Mitchell 44no; Taijul Islam 4-40). Click here to see the full scoreboard.

The Black Caps collapsed in pitiful fashion on the fourth afternoon of the first test against Bangladesh.

At 113-7 in their second innings at stumps on day four at Sylhet International Cricket Stadium, they are on the verge of losing back-to-back tests to the Tigers.

They will resume on day five Saturday with only the faintest of hopes of avoiding their worst result since the last one, at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui in the first week of 2022.

BD shouldn't feel secure yet.

Aussies were at 91/7 too (chasing 290+). They ended up winning. NZ still have Mitchell.

BD should stay focused and get the job done.

Tom Blundell with his cap on reminds me a little of Sir Donald Bradman. Not that both these players are of similar stature in Cricket.

Rachin Ravindra is a massive miss for NZ. In current form he would have been a great difference both as a bowler and batsman

Fightback of sorts at the moment.

BAN 310 & 338
NZ 317 & 173/8 (65) CRR: 2.66
Day 5: Drinks Break - New Zealand need 159 runs

41 run pship...

Congratulations Bangladesh for winning by 150 runs against NZ.
Great Match. Well deserved win on sporting pitch.

Congratulations Bangladesh for coming in the 2nd position of WTC table for the first time 😁

Great win. Well done.

They shouldn't get carried away. This is an opportunity to win 2-0.

Bangladesh defeated New Zealand by 150 runs in Sylhet courtesy of a ten-wicket haul from Taijul Islam.

In his first Test as captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto led Bangladesh to their first Test win at home against New Zealand. This was their second Test win in 18 matches. Their previous victory against the Kiwis had come in 2022 when they won in Mount Maunganui.

With this, the Tigers take a 1-0 lead in the two-game series and have gained crucial World Test Championship (WTC) points.

Najmul Hossain Shanto elected to bat first after winning the toss. Bangladesh’s top-order tried to make the best of decent batting conditions, even as the wicket showed signs of turn. Led by Glenn Phillips (4/53), New Zealand struck back. Bangladesh slipped from a strong 180/2 to 310 all out.

Kane Williamson’s 104 supplemented by Daryl Mitchell (41) and Glenn Phillips (42) helped the tourists gain a seven-run lead. Taijul Islam (4/109) was the standout Bangladesh performer along with batter Mominul Haque (3/4).

In the second innings, a fighting century from skipper Najmul and a good fifty from Mushfiqur Rahim (67) helped Bangladesh set a target of 332.

The tourists crumbled under the assault of Bangladesh spin and folded for 181 despite late resistance from the rearguard. Taijul stood out once again with 6/75.

This was only the second Test for Bangladesh at this venue. In the previous game, Zimbabwe had beaten Bangladesh by 151 runs. Islam had finished with his career-best 11/170 in that game.

The second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand begins on 6 December in Mirpur.

True . Pakistan should copy the model. PCB should ask BCB to loan a couple of players out if BD win this series.

Might change the nature of Pakistan's pathetic series results against NZ since 2010.

This is also their first victory at home against New Zealand. Pretty solid performance from Bangla Tigers. Fabulous bowling.

Not an ordinary feat! Bangla Tigers need special accolades. Pity that in last test championship circle Pak couldn't win tests at home. A great start for shanto also as a captain.

Southee reflects on Bangladesh's historic win led by Shanto

New Zealand captain credits key role played by the opposition bowlers and their newly-appointed skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto in Bangladesh's first Test win.

The first game of the two-match Test series saw Bangladesh record their first win at home against New Zealand.

The contest ebbed and flowed as the two sides stood apart by just seven runs at the end of the first innings. However, a gritty hundred by Shanto and a six-wicket haul from Taijul Islam saw the home side storm past the visitors.

The Kiwi Skipper, Tim Southee, acknowledged the 'pressure' Bangladesh bowlers applied consistently that was missing in their own bowling.

"I think you look at the way that the Bangladesh bowlers were able to apply pressure for a long period of time. I think we did it in periods, but we probably didn't do it for long enough. And then, as a batting unit, you're always looking at partnerships," Southee said during the post-match press conference.

"I think the Bangladesh bowlers bowled well, and were very accurate. And in the way they bowl and the style they bowl, we know that over here in this part of the world, as the Test moves on, it tends to get harder to bat, it tends to take a little bit more turn and a little bit more variable bounce. Looking back, you just need a couple of partnerships, and with the ball, we were probably a little bit off in terms of our ability to build pressure for long periods of time."

Although former Test captain Kane Williamson struck a crucial hundred in the first innings, Shanto soon overshadowed the effort with a century of his own on day three.

"I think Shanto's innings was a great innings, and one that obviously a very timely one as well, the situation of the game, so, there's many things you can look back on and as a side, you're just looking to improve and hopefully, learn from this and move forward in a few days time," he said.

Southee himself tried to land a counter-punch with an attacking knock of 34 from 24 balls in the second innings but perished to a half-tracker from Islam in the dying minutes of the match.

For both teams, it was the first match of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle. A win for Bangladesh meant that they jumped to the second position on the table, just below Pakistan who have two wins from two games.

The second Test between the two sides is scheduled to start on 6 December in Mirpur.

@Aman did'nt see you commenting much, or it only matters when NZ win, the rest are meaningless waste of space and time?
kudos to BD, well played...i also thought NZ batting let them down, they had their moments and fought well
but yeah....certain people take derisive pleasure in downing other teams or putting the boot in when that team is down, when ones team looses -thats the true measure of ones support...cheers M8!

If BD win 2-0, NZ will lose 11 points in ranking. In that case, they will go behind Pakistan and become 6th.

BD will gain 12 points in ranking then (46 to 58).

Yes, I will take valuable BCB loan. BCCI loan discounted right now :(

What about India's results in nz since 2010? They haven't exactly set the world alight in nz. Last series was 2 0 loss in nz? And then a loss in the final of wtc. Away games.

Among the top 6 teams, NZ often lose to BD.

NZ lost 0-4 and 0-3 to BD in 2010 and 2013 respectively (ODI series). They also lost 1 Test at home and now this Test in BD.

2013 Test series was also drawn 0-0.

Well Bangladesh certainly did better than Pakistan did in test matches against NZ earlier this year, so well done to them. We could do with a leftie spinner who can bowl teams out at home as Mr Nouman Ali is not the answer.

BD always gives tough time to NZ. It will be fantastic if they can win series here.

Forget beating NZ in NZ. PAK haven't beaten NZ in Asia since 2002.

And don't forget nz drew vs bdesh in nz

Excellent win for BD.

You can't go far wrong in Test cricket by posting 300 in both innings and taking 20 wickets.

I would take Taijul in PAK attack in a heartbeat.

New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi expects his side to find their rhythm going into the second Test against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh showed top form in the first encounter between the two sides in Sylhet and won by a comfortable margin of 150 runs. After taking a slender first-innings lead, New Zealand couldn’t match up to the Tigers, and were defeated comprehensively.

However, Kiwi spinner Sodhi is optimistic about his side’s chances ahead of the second and final Test in Mirpur. He believes that the team will be able to get over this loss quickly.

“The great success this team's had over the past decade has been being able to park these sort of things quickly, whether its success or loss,” Sodhi said. “It is obviously tough to come out on the losing side in that first game in Sylhet, but I think as the Test progressed, we found a bit more rhythm.”

Sodhi had an underwhelming first Test, he took three wickets at an average of 48.33. But he feels that New Zealand can adapt.

“Obviously, I haven't played Test cricket in a while, so it's always going to be tough in these conditions.

“It's always going to be challenging, not playing a lot of Test cricket over a long period of time, but when you [New Zealand] come together, [it is about] how quickly you can adapt [to the format].”

Black Caps bowler also thinks that the team can look to Bangladesh’s success in the first game for lessons.

“The way that Bangladesh played, they certainly outplayed us. But upon reflection, I think they gave us a blueprint on what's successful in these conditions, and hopefully, we can apply that to this next Test match.”

“It is about just working in partnerships and being a little more accurate. That's something hopefully we can come together as a bowling group over the next couple of days.”

The second Test between Bangladesh and New Zealand starts from 6 December.

In case you missed the toss, Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat first.

Day 1: 1st Session
BAN 41/3 (14) CRR: 2.93
Bangladesh is not in a good position at the start of the day 1.

Bangladesh lost 4 wickets for 47 New Zealand bowling better than last match

Bangladesh is all over the place atm. 4 down for 66. Not looking good. Need to score 250+ here.

Bangladesh is 5 down now for 109 as they lost Mushfiqur Rahim for 35 runs. Bangladesh really need a good partnership here to get a respectable first inning score.

5 wickets out of 6 today were taken by spinners and of course, the 6th one was that obstructing the field one. Bangladesh will like this track as their spin attack won them the 1st game as well.

7th one down now as Glenn has his 2nd wicket of the innings. Bangladesh is 135/7 now. Situation is looking very weak for the bengal tigers

Typical mirpur turning pitch... didn't expected this time at least... should have prepared sporting pitch like sylhet

8 down for 145 runs as Santner has his third one. Problem problem

New Zealand innings started but they are not in a good position to start with. 24/2 in reply to Bangladesh's 172 in 1st innings.

Spin has come to the party on this pitch. Another wicket fell down to a spinner.
NZ score is 31/3 now.

NZ 5 down
Intresting thing is no one talk about pitch but yea pitch talk is only about India.

New Zealand is under deep waters now. 55/5. All spin wrecking havoc on batting ATM

Bad light has stopped the play for now. It might be stumps early on day 1.

15 Wickets fall from 79 over today between Bangladesh and NZ test match at Mirpur.

Unfortunately, the bad light has caused the play to end on Day 1.

1701858294415.png

BD now are very well in the match after taking 5 wickets early.. Hope they continue to do the same in the next day and take 50 runs lead at least and try to bat much better than the first innings and give a target of 250-300 and win it

Wickets tumble on day one of Black Caps v Bangladesh second test

Second test, day one, Dhaka:
Bangladesh 172 (Mitchell Santer 3-65, Glenn Phillips 3-31) versus New Zealand 55-5 (Mehidy Hasan Miraz 3-17). Click here for full scoreboard.

Never judge the performances of the two cricket sides until both teams have had a bat and a bowl.

It’s a much-used maxim for good reason, and stood out again amongst the surrounding gloom in Dhaka on day one of the second and final test between New Zealand and Bangladesh on Wednesday.

The Black Caps – and their fans – would have been chuffed when the spin trio of Mitchell Santner (3-65 from 28 overs), Glenn Phillips (3-31 from 12) and Ajaz Patel (2-54 from 17) dismissed the hosts for just 172 in 66.2 overs.

But a false dawn was rapidly revealed as the tourists lost five wickets for 55 runs before bad light brought about a premature stumps, as a number of the batters who succumbed poorly in the second innings of their defeat in the first test in Sylhet last week again looked short of form and confidence.

Devon Conway fell for 11 when bowled without playing a shot to an arm ball from offspinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and fellow opener Tom Latham perished to a cracking low catch from wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan only two runs later.

The booming clamour for World Cup breakout star Rachin Ravindra to replace Henry Nicholls had fallen on deaf ears amongst the tour selection group, but the criticism over the left-hander’s retention will only grow louder after he perished to an awfully mishit attempt to change the direction of the game and his fortunes for just the solitary run.

First-test century maker Kane Williamson (13) survived a missed catch before falling to a stunner close in on the leg-side and Tom Blundell was plumb lbw for a duck, playing back, to leave their side still 117 runs behind, with only five first-innings wickets up their sleeves.

Included amongst the Bangladesh batters to fall was Mushfiqur Rahim, who bizarrely opted to handle a ball after a defensive shot played against a Kyle Jamieson delivery which wasn’t threatening to hit his stumps, and resulted in him becoming the seventh player to be dismissed in that method – now part of the ‘obstructing the field’ laws.

Skipper Tim Southee lost the coin toss and admitted his side would also have opted to bat first, after just one change was made to the beaten first-test XI.

Santner, thought to be regarded now solely as a white-ball specialist, replaced legspinner Ish Sodhi.

The left-arm spinner, who excelled at the recent World Cup in India, had made just one test appearance since December 2020. Regularly criticised for not turning the ball enough for a frontline test spinner, the 31-year-old had no problems refuting that on the extraordinarily helpful Mirpur pitch as he bowled with lovely flight and control also.

On his birthday, Phillips again showed that his added value with the ball is no longer a surprise, while Southee returned the strangely incredible figures of 1-0 from 5.2 overs.

When play began, the weather resembled New Zealand in November conditions, and seemed set up for a surfeit of seam and swing.

But despite there being plenty of movement for Southee and Kyle Jamieson, the captain rapidly switched to spin. Patel’s first ball – to start the sixth over – was a ripper, and opposing opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy looked like he was terrifyingly occupying a minefield.

Tom Latham missed a run-out from close range at silly mid-on at the end of the over, but wickets tumbled quickly as Bangladesh fell to 47-4 after 15 overs.

Mushfiqur (35) and second-test rookie Shahadat Hossain (31) put up stubborn resistance in adding 57 for the fifth wicket before the veteran’s inexcusable dismissal opened up the tail.

Things had initially gone so well for the visitors that Southee – with Santner’s emphatic pleading – even got another DRS request to fall in his favour, while wicketkeeper Blundell took a couple of difficult catches standing up to the slow bowlers.

New Zealand also managed to bowl 21 maidens in 66.2 overs – compared to 23 over both innings in the defeat in Sylhet. That seemed impressive until the home side spun their magic.

The Mirpur wicket would likely have been prepared long before the hosts upset New Zealand in the first match, which left them requiring just a draw to score a maiden test series win over their rivals.

No doubt the home team’s batters would have liked a road, baked under the sun, allowing them to bat for two days after winning the toss, but with winter setting in, they were left with a pitch which looks likely to lead to a result well before the end of the scheduled five days – and with every chance of it being again in their favour.

BD need to stop playing in Mirpur if they ever want to improve and compete in the bigger stages. This toxic culture of wanting to give players flats, cars, etc after one measly win need to stop too.

Also, how convenient of BD management to setup a series right after taking L's from Netherlands in the WC.

Ashok, Clarkson & O’Rourke called up for Bangladesh ODIs

BLACKCAPS fans will get an early look into the future with three potential debutants included in the 13-player ODI squad to face Bangladesh.

Twenty-six-year-old Central Stags all-rounder Josh Clarkson and Canterbury seamer Will O’Rourke (22) have earned their maiden call ups, while Auckland Aces leg spinner Adi Ashok (21) has been selected in an ODI squad for the first time after making his T20I debut against the United Arab Emirates in August.

Ashok will feature in the squad for the second two matches, with the team’s premiere leg spinner Ish Sodhi included in the squad for game one, ahead of a planned break leading into a busy period of T20 international cricket.

The squad will be led by Tom Latham and features seven players from the group at the recent ICC Cricket World Cup in India, including breakout star Rachin Ravindra - who finished as the tournament’s fourth top run scorer with a New Zealand record-equalling 578 runs from ten innings.

All three potential new caps are former New Zealand Under19 representatives, with Josh Clarkson, Finn Allen, and Rachin Ravindra part of the 2016 alumni, and Ashok and O’Rourke from the 2020 tournament squad.

With several senior players either injured or resting after a busy winter, BLACKCAPS selector Sam Wells said the series against Bangladesh which starts next Sunday in Dunedin, represented a great opportunity to introduce some new faces to the One Day unit.

“After a very busy winter of touring it will be exciting to have the team back playing at home,” said Wells.

“The volume and intensity of the cricket over the winter this year means we need to strike a balance with workloads for players, particularly those that play multiple formats.

“That need for balance also creates opportunities and it’s great to be able to give some players their first call-ups.”

Wells said all three potential new caps had impressed with their work in domestic cricket and in the New Zealand A environment.

“Josh is someone who, while still only young, has played over 150 matches for the Stags, developing his skills with bat and ball to become a consistent contributor.

“Adi and Will are both still fresh to domestic cricket but have been impressive in their early efforts and stepped up well this year in the New Zealand A matches against Australia A.

“Both offer valuable skill-sets, Adi with impressive control as a young leg spinner, and Will with natural bounce and variation as a tall pace bowler.”

“As we’ve seen in the ongoing Test series and the ODI Series in September, Bangladesh is a quality international side and we know it will present a strong challenge on this return tour.”

With the Bangladesh Test players not due home until next week, the decision was made to rest Kane Williamson, Tim Southee, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Glenn Phillips, and Devon Conway ahead of a full home season.

Michael Bracewell (Achilles), Matt Henry (hamstring), Lockie Ferguson (Achilles), James Neesham (ankle), Ben Lister (hamstring) and Henry Shipley (back) were not considered for selection due to injury, while Trent Boult made himself unavailable.
