New Zealand tour of Bangladesh to play 2 Tests (2023)

Straightaway after lunch, Bangladesh got the breakthrough as Devon Conway is gone. NZ is 5/1 ATM.
Finally another wicket for a pacer in this match otherwise it was all spin all over.

New Zealand just can't block block to target they should attack Bangladesh bowlers

Things are going towards yet another spin domination as Taijul picks his 1st wicket and overall 2nd for his team. NZ is 2 down for 25. He got the wicket of the big fish, Kane Williamson. Superb stuff from bangladeshi bowlers.

Another NZ batter bites the dust. 3 down for 33.
And it was another spinner who came to the party. What is this pitch doing? ICC should be watching this. Nothing in it for the batters.

Are you saying that based on performance in 1st innings? Even NZ scored only 180.

This is BD's home turf (Mirpur). I say 250-300 is quite possible if they apply themselves.
I told you ,144 all out .now nz just need one partnership to win the game .New Zealand need 93 runs woth 7 wickets in hand .its not impossible but Bangladesh is still ahead

Latham gone but can BD defend this? Either way this is the sorta series that will send Test cricket plummeting to the depths.

Only Glenn Phillips can save New Zealand He have to repeat what he did in 1st Innings

This is a low-scoring pitch.

1st innings: 172.
2nd innings: 180.
3rd innings: 144.
4th innings: 59/5*.

BD need to get Philips out quickly. Also, Mitchell.

NZ - 60/5.

77 more to win. 5 wickets in hand.

Glenn Phillips is such a star player. Ridiculous T20 strike rate. He can wicket keep, he can bowl, and he’s a gun fielder as well.

If he manages to take New Zealand home he’s truly announced himself as one of the best out right now.

a shame that nz selectors did not persist with philips in the test team earlier and for some odd reason favored henry nicholls over him. phillips should have been a regular in the test team since atleast 2 years ago

If glen phillips stays for few more overs, the game is over for Bangladesh.

Phillips is a great player. Not only has the skills but can handle pressure too.

Two poor quality team ( NZ is poor in subcontinent) , substandard pitch making game intresting. Quality of this game is very very poor

50 partnership for Glenn Phillips (27*) and Mitchell Santner (28*) with 18 runs to win.

India barely scraped by the so called poor quality team last time in Bangladesh.

Also bangladesh beat nz before too even at their best. Even Aussies struggle badly in bangladesh

NZ won the 2nd test 4wickets and the series is level at 1-1.

Black Caps beat Bangladesh in second test in Dhaka to level series 1-1

Second test, day four, Dhaka: Bangladesh 172 and 144 (Zakir Hasan 59; Ajaz Patel 6-57, Mitchell Santner 3-51) lost to New Zealand 180 and 139-6 (Glenn Phillips 40 not out, Mitchell Santner 36no, Tom Latham 26; Mehidy Hasan Miraz 3-51, Taijul Islam 2-58) by four wickets. Click here for full scorecard.

A superb match double from Glenn Phillips has guided New Zealand to level their test series with Bangladesh.

In just his third test, the New Zealand batter made 40 not out in his side's second innings to get them home in a tense four-wicket win in Dhaka on Saturday.

Phillips, who top-scored in the first innings with 87, combined with fellow allrounder Mitchell Santner (35 not out) in an unbroken seventh-wicket partnership worth 70, after NZ had slumped to 69-6. Earlier, opener Tom Latham grafted for 60 balls for 26 on a woeful wicket which offered a ridiculous amount of turn and made batting virtually a lottery – and not a richly rewarding one.

Earlier, left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel led the way for New Zealand’s bowlers, taking 6-57 from 18 overs – his second-best return in tests behind his 10-wicket haul against India in Mumbai in 2021, and his fourth five-wicket bag in an innings in 16 tests.

Patel, who kissed the Mirpur stadium turf after taking his fifth wicket, was supported by Santner with 3-51 from 11 overs as the tourists used just three bowlers for the Bangladesh second dig, which lasted only 35 overs.

The 35-year-old ended with match figures of 8-111 and must wish he could roll up the Mirpur pitch and cargo it back to New Zealand, so he may add to his paltry collection of three test appearances in this country.

The hosts resumed their second innings on Saturday at 38-2, knowing that batting on a pitch offering more spin than the most seasoned politician was likely to be a short-lived affair.

So it proved, as New Zealand’s slow bowlers ripped through the remaining batters, but the hosts did get key resistance from inexperienced opener Zakir Hasan.

The left-hander became just the second player in the test to score more than 35 runs as he struck six fours and a six in making 59 from 86 balls in almost batting through the innings.

The visitors thought they had Zakir out lbw to Patel when on 40, as he came down the wicket and was struck on the pad when not playing a shot. The opener was given not out, New Zealand skipper Tim Southee asked for the decision to be reviewed, and the TV replays indicated the ball ‘would’ have hit the stumps, but because Zakir was hit when more than three metres down the pitch, the laws state he couldn’t be given out, due to the uncertainty of the ball-tracking given the distance it still had to travel.

Bangladesh’s last-wicket pair of Taijul Islam and Shoriful Islam added 16 runs to make New Zealand’s pursuit stickier, and when opener Devon Conway fell for just two, the pressure was instantly on the visiting side.

First-test century-maker Kane Williamson was stumped off the bowling of key Bangladesh left-arm tweaker Taijul to have NZ precariously placed at 24-2. Under-fire Henry Nicholls (3) was next to fall, to complete a forgettable series that returned just 25 runs from four innings.

New Zealand lost the first test in Sylhet last week by 150 runs

After the 1-1 result of the Ban v NZ Test series

It's amazing how the likes of BD, SL and PAK cant win a single series against NZ even in Asian conditions.

Aiaz Patel's bowling figures in the 2nd Test Match against Bangladesh are:

Overs 35
Runs 111
Wickets 8

He performs well in Asian conditions.

Overall, Bangladesh has put up a good fight against New Zealand. In this series, Bangladesh has showcased a good batting intent.

It was an opportunity for BD to win 2-0. But, they threw it away (with reckless batting and crucial dropped catch of Phillips).

Nonetheless, it was a good series for BD overall. Tied the series 1-1 (which they were expected to lose 0-2).

New Zealand skipper Tim Southee was pleased with his team's exceptional effort with the bat on Day 4 that saw them level the Test series in Bangladesh on Saturday.

Southee reserved special praise for Player of the Match Glenn Phillips, who shone with bat and ball in the series. Phillips' counter-attacking 87 had given the Kiwis a slender lead in the first innings and he was once again the key player in the fourth innings on a difficult wicket.

Combining with Mitchell Santner after the team were reduced to 69/6 in pursuit of 137, Phillips made an unbeaten 40 in 48 balls to take the team home and help them level the two-match ICC World Test Championship series.

"Glenn Phillips's effort throughout the match, his innings in the first innings was obviously crucial to keep us in the game and get us past Bangladesh in the first innings," Southee said praising Phillips' effort.

"He's still young in his spin career and the impact he's had with the ball in this series has been pleasing."

"He's a very positive guy in the way he plays. It's a different format, he still trusted that his way was the right way. So, I think it's pleasing to see on a difficult wicket, which I think, I look back to a few of his innings and a lot of his great innings have been on difficult wickets."

Southee wasn't too pleased with the wicket, where spinners thrived and claimed it was the "worst wicket" he has come across in his career.

"I think when you come to this part of the world, especially for us, the conditions are so foreign, particularly this Test match, very foreign to what we're used to," Southee stated.

"And I guess to lose the toss as well, and then to come out on top on a wicket like that was very pleasing. Like I said, a number of different guys have stepped up in different ways, and it's nice to bounce back after the first Test.

With a win apiece in the series, New Zealand and Bangladesh have 12 points each in the World Test Championship cycle after their first series.

Apparently, Tim Southee wasn't happy with the pitch during the series.

I hope it was worth it for Litton Das spend time with his family over once in a lifetime opportunity to win series against NZ.
BD wont go anywhere playing in Mirpur and having minnow level mentality despite playing for 30 years. I would be weary of Uganda in the next T20 World Cup. They already took down Zim and you know BD is their next target. Unless the current crop of management changes, I see no hope for this team.

Dhaka Pitch Labelled "Worst Wicket" By New Zealand Captain Tim Southee

New Zealand Test skipper Tim Southee slammed the pitch at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka and called the wicket the "worst" he has seen in his career after Blackcaps tied the two-match Test series with Bangladesh. Thirty batters were dismissed by spinners as 36 wickets fell in 178.1 overs of play - the third-lowest number of balls bowled in a Test (1069) for that many wickets to fall - and Southee felt the pitch was far too friendly to bowlers, creating an uneven contest.

"It is probably the worst wicket I've come across in my career. The balance between bat and ball was heavily favoured in the bowler's hands. I think for the match to be over in 170 overs sort of reflects that. So, for our guys to scrap away and then come away with the win was a big pleasure," Southee was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

"I think it was just a scrappy Test match. It was a tough wicket. Runs were hard to come by, and just those little moments and partnerships throughout were crucial, whereas, in other matches, I guess when conditions are a little bit more even between bat and ball, they don't get noticed as much," he added.

"When we play Tests, we are not here to improve. This is not a place for practice. We are trying to win the Test. We must prepare to win the Test, but we should take this type of advantage. We can prepare in first-class cricket by trying out good wickets. We should prepare wickets like these and wickets like away conditions in NCL [National Cricket League] or BCL [Bangladesh Cricket League]," Shanto said.

When asked if the pitch in Sylhet for the first Test, which extended into the final day, gave the squad a "home advantage," Shanto pointed out that bowlers suffered there.

"It wasn't a very helpful wicket for bowlers in Sylhet. Bowlers had to work hard for their wickets. There was a bit of help for both bowlers and batters. We didn't bat well in Dhaka. We should have scored 230-240 runs in the first innings. The wicket seemed bad because we got 172. New ball was a challenge, but that's also true anywhere around the world. It wasn't anything different here, but we could have avoided this situation if we batted better in the first innings," he said.

New Zealand levelled the two-match Test series against Bangladesh by clinching victory in the second game within four days on Saturday at the Shere Bangla National Stadium and the Test series on 1-1 scoreline.

Glenn Phillps once again stole the show with the bat scoring 40* off 48 balls and stitching a crucial unbeaten 70-run partnership with Mitchell Santner. The Tigers began the day with a score of 38/2 with the spinner duo of Ajaz Patel and Mitchell Santner combining to scalp eight.

New Zealand had a slender lead of 8 runs after the end of the first innings, as a result, the Kiwis set out to chase a target of 137.

Its fashionable for SEN teams to complain about SC pitches. Again its the "same' pitch for "both" teams. And it's a "test" match. So you have to be prepared for everyhting. Too many cry babies around. The great Aus team of 99-07 never complained about the SC pitches. They wanted to win on these and labelled it final frontier. Pak missed a trick when they laid out flat wickets fro Aus and Eng. They should have prepared raging turners - no guarantee they win but still a better shot than the flat pitches. Again its the "same pitch" for both teams

Glen phillips is fast becoming spin version of Collin Degromme. He has this low center of gravity like Rishabh Pant. Great meeting points of the ball on turning wicket. WIll be very handy. Also more than an useful spinner.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that the pitch for the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur has been rated as “unsatisfactory” under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.

ICC Match Referee, David Boon, submitted his report to the ICC expressing the concerns of the match officials and after consulting with the captains of both teams. Following the assessment, the venue has received one demerit point.

The report has been forwarded to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), who now have 14 days if they wish to appeal against the sanction.

Mr Boon said: “The outfield was very good and held up extremely well with the rain. However, it appeared that the pitch may have been under prepared, as it was not hard and was covered in grass clippings on day one. From the first session onwards, throughout the remainder of the match the bounce was inconsistent with numerous balls bursting the surface. Deliveries from spin bowlers often went over the batter's shoulder when playing forward and then occasionally stayed very low.”
