SL vs NZ, 1st T20I: Sri Lanka wins by four wickets with one over left

On a turning track in Dambulla, Sri Lankan spinners claimed six wickets, controlling the scoring rate and holding New Zealand to 135 all out. Despite the tricky conditions, it should have been a manageable chase. Captain Charith Asalanka ensured stability, finishing unbeaten on 35 off 28 balls, guiding his team to victory with six balls and four wickets in hand.

New Zealand faced a challenging start, losing early wickets and finding the ball turning sharply right from the first over, where Maheesh Theekshana showed surprising turn. Though Theekshana's only wicket came at the innings’ end when he trapped Will Young lbw for 19, Dunith Wellalage and Nuwan Thushara made early inroads, dismissing Tim Robinson and Mark Chapman, respectively.

Sri Lanka's slow bowlers continued to dominate, leaving New Zealand at 31 for 3 after the powerplay and maintaining control through the middle overs. New Zealand managed only 66 runs in the next 10 overs, losing five more wickets along the way.

Kusal Perera's brisk 22 off 15 balls helped Sri Lanka through the powerplay, though the team lost Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis during this period. Kamindu Mendis, a key player in recent Sri Lankan successes, made 23 off 16 balls, setting a solid foundation for the chase.

Asalanka’s composed innings ensured Sri Lanka crossed the finish line despite a few hiccups. Starting aggressively with two sixes in his first 11 balls, he later rotated the strike effectively, keeping his team on course.

In just his third international outing, all-rounder Zakary Foulkes showcased his skills with both bat and ball. His quickfire 27 not out off 16 balls lifted New Zealand from an extremely low score to a modest total. With the ball, Foulkes impressed as well, dismissing Pathum Nissanka with a full delivery, bouncing out Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and having Wanindu Hasaranga caught, ending with figures of 3 for 20.

Sri Lanka (19.5/20 overs T:109) 103

New Zealand won by 5 runs

Roughly 20 days after the women’s team won the T20 World Cup and about a week after the men’s Test team completed a whitewash of India at home, New Zealand’s cricketers have once again defied the odds.

This time, they defended a total of 108 all out on a tricky, yet not unplayable, surface in Dambulla. Lockie Ferguson, who bowled only two overs before being forced off the field due to a calf injury, played a crucial role by taking a hat-trick to remove Sri Lanka’s top order, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 7.

As has often been the case on their long South Asian tour, Glenn Phillips was pivotal to New Zealand's success. He had been dismissed for 4 off 9 balls but took three crucial wickets in the final over, a spell he only bowled due to Ferguson's absence. The most significant of those wickets was Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka’s mainstay, who had made 52 off 50 balls. Nissanka attempted to clear the long-on boundary but was caught, becoming the last recognized batter to fall.

Zakary Foulkes, Mitchell Santner, and Michael Bracewell also played key roles in keeping Sri Lanka under pressure, picking up wickets as the batters grew frustrated. New Zealand’s 108 all out is their lowest total defended in a T20I, and only twice have Full Members failed to chase down such a modest target (Zimbabwe vs Namibia in 2023 and West Indies vs Zimbabwe in 2010).

Sri Lanka would have felt confident of victory when New Zealand were reduced to 52 for 6 in the 11th over. However, New Zealand’s recovery, led by Will Young (30), Santner (19), and Josh Clarkson (24), ensured they posted a competitive total, albeit at a rate under a run-a-ball.

This win ties the series 1-1, with Sri Lanka having won comfortably in Saturday's opening match.

BLACKCAPS bowler Lockie Ferguson has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka after sustaining a left calf injury in Monday morning’s T20I victory in Dambulla

Ferguson left the field after experiencing discomfort while bowling his second over and an initial medical assessment indicated that he would not be fit enough to take part in the upcoming 50-over matches.

Ferguson will return home to New Zealand today for scans which will determine the extent of the injury and the period of rehabilitation required.

Adam Milne has been called into the squad as Ferguson’s replacement and will join the squad in Dambulla tomorrow.

BLACKCAPS head coach Gary Stead said he was disappointed for Ferguson.

“We’re gutted for Lockie,” said Stead.

“He showed in the space of just two overs what an asset he is with the ball and he’s also brought a lot of leadership to this group, so he’ll be a big miss heading into an important ODI series for us.

“To be ruled out so early in a tour is always tough to take, but we’re hopeful his recovery will be short and he’ll be back out on the field in no time.

“Adam is a like-for-like replacement who brings genuine pace and plenty of international experience, so we’re looking forward to welcoming him into the group.”

The three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka begins on Wednesday in Dambulla.

Injury sidelines Sri Lanka spinner for ODI series against New Zealand

Wanindu Hasaranga, who has had recent injury woes, picked up a recurring injury during the second T20I against New Zealand.

Sri Lanka have been dealt with a massive blow ahead of the three-match ODI series against New Zealand as leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out after sustaining a left hamstring injury.

Hasaranga, Sri Lanka's leading wicket-taker in the shortest format, picked up the injury while bowling during the second T20I against New Zealand on Sunday in Dambulla.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have named Dushan Hemantha, who has played five ODIs for the Islanders, as his replacement for the upcoming series.

The 27-year-old had finished the two T20Is with six wickets, snapping four on Sunday, and was named the Player of the Series.

While Hasaranga ripped into the New Zealand batting as Sri Lanka dismissed them for 108, the visitors bounced back in style with the ball, clinching a five-run heist to end the series in a 1-1 draw.

Speaking after the match, Hasaranga opened up about his injury, “Finally, I can have a few weeks' break after this match. I think it's bad. I wanted to bowl my four overs to cut down their total. I can't run, so I tried to maximise (while batting) but I got out.”

The leg-spinner has had recent bouts with injuries, having pulled the same hamstring back in August during the home series against India.

Hasaranga is the second player to be ruled out of the upcoming series between New Zealand and Sri Lanka. Kiwi pacer and hat-trick hero from the second T20I Lockie Ferguson will also miss the action owing to a recent calf injury.

The experienced Adam Milne has been recalled into the squad to replace Ferguson.

Kusal Mendis powered Sri Lanka to a three-wicket victory over New Zealand in their rain-affected second one-day international at Pallekele on Sunday, securing the series 2-0.

Chasing a target of 210, Sri Lanka faced difficulties building partnerships on a turning pitch and found themselves at 93-5. However, Kusal, who had been struggling with a groin injury earlier in his innings, played a crucial unbeaten knock of 74 off 102 balls to guide his team home.

Late cameos from Janith Liyanage (22), Dunith Wellalage (18), and Maheesh Theekshana (27 not out) further settled the host's nerves, despite the threat posed by Michael Bracewell’s spin (4-36).

This marked Sri Lanka's first ODI series win over New Zealand since 2012 and their fifth bilateral series victory of 2024.

Earlier, Sri Lanka chose to bowl first and gained an early advantage with two quick wickets. Will Young (26) steadied the innings before rain interruptions reduced the match to 47 overs per side. Mark Chapman (76) and Mitchell Hay (49) then formed a solid partnership, but the end of their 75-run stand led to a collapse, with New Zealand bowled out for just 209, thanks to sharp fielding from Sri Lanka.

Spinners Theekshana (3-31) and Jeffrey Vandersay (3-46) kept the pressure on, dismissing the last six New Zealand wickets for just 36 runs.

Asitha Fernando (2-37) made a key breakthrough, removing Chapman, who had struck seven fours and three sixes and appeared set for his third ODI century, until Avishka Fernando pulled off a stunning catch in the deep.

Sri Lanka won the rain-affected series opener in Dambulla by 45 runs using the DLS method, with centuries from Kusal and Avishka. The final match of the series will be held in Pallekele on Tuesday.

Good decision.

Series is already over. SL won. Better to rest main players and try out bench players.
