England win the toss and bat.

Complete joke so far, 3 early wickets. Vaughan didn't play a straight one, Strauss is just in dreadful form and batting in the wrong position, Cook bowled off his pads. :( Apparently a dream wicket. Going to watch it soon but thought I'd post this first.

Please don't lose, England...

Disgrace that the man in form - the class OWAIS SHAH gets dropped over Vaughan's mate, Andrew Strauss.

Hope England get smashed

Rooting for England off course, but I would love to see Fleming score those 113 runs and finish with a career average of 40. It would be a travesty IMO if he were to end up averaging 30+. he's too good a player.

Looks like one of those 'new ball/plucky debutant/batsmen not getting a start' rush of wickets that happens a lot actually. If the worst is over then there is still potential for a good score for England, but no more wickets for a while please.

What is Strauss doing in the line-up, he is a walking wicket at the moment.

Picking a walking wicket is forgiveable, if the rest of the lineup is doing well, and the walking wicket is showing signs of playing himself back into form at some point. However neither of these things apply with England and Strauss right now.

Neither Bell nor Pietersen have made an important hundred in a long time, about time they delivered, and frankly they need to now.

all this media and fan hype about how great it would be if Fleming ends with an average of 40.

yet when our Inzi talks of it, he gets slated for being selfish.

Pathetic talk.

I hope Fleming gets 2 Golden ducks!

the run rate is pretty atrocious, 1.11 !! not that its a bad thing but they will only get themselves under pressure if they play too timidly

kp is due for big run, so nothing to worry bout...haven't had a half century in last 10 innings..

What the hell are England doing? Ian Bell - simply blocking isn't good enough!

26/3 off 18 overs.

Pietersen 15 not out of 28 balls
Bell 6 not out of 44 balls

But Inzi ruined his own average by trying to come back rather unfit and out of form to beat Miandad's record. Had he not he would have retired with a 50+ record in all test forms.

It still baffles me how Bell scored so heavily against Pakistan, home and away, and the impact he had in 2005-2006 when he has always struggled and looked so ordinary against lesser opposition.

brilliant performance by Eng (ger) land

you can just imagine the pakpassion knives being sharpened if this was Pakistan

Pietersen 50 off 74 balls. the balls are significant if you look at the number of overs Eng has taken to get to 69
Eng 69-4 after 32.4 overs

eng last hope is pietersen after tea, to get them to the 250 mark. but nz doing excellent.

KP isn't just a great in the making anymore, this century just proves what we all already know: He is a modern master. Who else in this world can score more than half the teams runs at a strike rate of more than 60 where the next highest score is by No. 6 Paul Collingwood (30)

Good knock from FIGJAM but England will do it tough to get to 300 I reckon.

An absolutely pathetic batting performance from England. This has to rank as one of the worst of recent times, even when measured against the other dismal efforts that have been a feature of this Winter. We are 200+ runs short of a competitive target on this pitch. Unless New Zealand bat really badly (or the England tail can salvage something), England will have to bat for two days in the second innings to save this game.

Something in the England camp must be very badly wrong for players of this calibre to be underperforming to the extent they have been recently.

Yes they are massively soft and overrated by themselves and their media. The English team batting wise gives up without a fight (KP & Collingwood excepted)

Meek and embarassing in the main part, yet still a gripping day thanks to one of KP's best innings in a long time. To score such a high percentage of the runs, at a good strike rate, dominate the partnerships, and look in such a different class was reminiscent of Gooch. I can't help wondering though, in 10 years time and beyond hopefully KP will be remembered as a great player in a sucessful side, rather than a lone light in a crap one.

The match - I don't think it's over, but the next four days are going to have to see a much more professional team performance than this one, or it's a dodgy draw at best for England.

Borad ct behind first ball of day off Southee
Eng 240-8
(PS: my screen is upside down so can't see or read well)

Sidebottom ct at midnon off Southee. Southee gets 5fer on debut
Eng 253 all out

Bell let the ball go and LBW off Sidebottom. Typical left armer ball swinging in from off stump
NZ 1-1 after 3 balls

I actually don't think they are overrated. If I did think that, I wouldn't be so angry about it. I've been following these players long enough to see what they're capable of when they're right mentally. Every one of them has a Test average of over 40 that has been earned over a number of seasons, during which they've all played against the strongest bowling attacks. Strauss is out of form, but the rest seem to look good for a while until they've done enough to maintain their averages and make it hard for them to be dropped for the next game, before needlessly getting out.

That kind of individualistic approach is not going to win us too many Test matches.

I expect Jesse Ryder is getting hammered, too. Probably at home, because pubs in New Zealand close on Easter Sunday.

Seriously though, this is typical Anderson. When he's good, he looks like a world beater, but he's just so inconsistent.

New Zealand are showing just how easy this pitch can be to score runs on once you've taken the trouble to play yourself in.

What a delivery By Sidebottom to get Brandon Mcullum bowled him around the wicket 5 wickets for him!

NZ collapsing going from 2/103 to 6/137

Sidebottom has got 5/33

137-6!!! Amazing turnaround.

Poor Kiwi batting, but tremendous spell from Sidebottom, and Broad!

And two more sixes by Southee. The new beast is roaring. moves to 47 off 27
158 to win

another six by Southee to move to 53 from 29 balls

couple of 1s and 2s and
NZ 409-9 - 142 to win

This is amazing- he has hit another 6!

He can break Viv's record of the fastest ton ever and also Akram's record of most sixes

six #9 to move to 76. Get a hundred to go with a 5fer on debut - this feat is not common for experienced players either

A likely chance if the other player wasn't Martin.... he is one of the worst number 11 ever

Most clueless batsmen I've ever seen from an international side...
Watched him in a domestic game, he was utterly a joke.
