What's new

New Zealand v Pakistan | 1st Test | Christchurch | Nov 17-21, 2016 | Day 3

Mark Richardson will love watching Sami.

Must be bringing memories of himself.

Excellent batting by Sami and Azhar.

Weathered the storm and now the sun is out, which will make scoring much easier.

Don't know people are being upset over scoring rate. It's not as if they are dead batting half volleys/short wide stuff. They are bowling immaculate lines and lengths. Giving nothing away. Yes they could be a bit more attentive to strike rotation opportunities but they mostly have been trying to leave which again in perfectly understandable.

Wow Aslam actually played an attacking shot. All the way up to 6 runs off 45 balls now!!

Why the heck sami is trying to open the face at the last moment, want to repeat his catching practice of first inning, play it with soft hands and with as straight a bat as you can son.

Runs coming freely now.

Pakistan's openers seeing off the new ball could be the defining moment of the match.

Why? This is just 2nd day & NZ bowling 2nd time in 2 days - if this pair can take PAK to 100/1 in 45 overs, last 9 wickets can add another 200.

PAK will need around 200 to win.

It's 3rd day 1st day was rained off.

See, now NZ pacers are getting frustrated and trying to do different things and in process have dished up two half volleys and Azhar makes full use of them!

Keep going like this boys..

waleed88 where are though?:13:

I was sleeping but just woke up.. good bowling by Amir but my issue with him has been the use of the new ball and it has no swing seam on it..

Now that they have seen him, maybe they can play him a bit better. Would be big if they can knock Grandhomme out of the attack and get the spinner into the game.

If Australia were batting here - what would be the score at this stage? :murali

Depending on how many ball Waner survives - my hunch is 25, in combined innings, may be 18 in 2nd innings, so 20 from those 18 balls & 20 from other 13 overs. Probably 44/3 ............

What if the spinner wrecks us. He's a bit of an unknown commodity himself lol

Sami played 57 balls , and gets only 7 , if he had played a little fast would have got at least 20 runs.

Poor shot by Sami.

This is what negative mindset does !!

A half volley outside off stump and he pokes at it with an open blade.

I think Babar should just go for his shots.

He needs to play his natural game.

What was the point of Sami innings?

This pitch will eventually get you so better if playing some shots when you can.

This dibly dobler will get another 5fiver

Wrong time to get out - these 3 pacers have bowled 70+ overs in last 28 hours; they are probably at their last serious spell & Kiwis don't have much of a spinner - and the sun is shinning.

These are just laps of concentration more than any thing else. Gradually we'll have to go to a situation where Centrally contracted Test openers won't be given NoC for any T20 leagues.

Atleast babar will either get out very soon or we will sterly get a move on with respect to run rate. Even though second scenario is very unlikely.

Should have been 40-1 had they been slightly positive, instead they are 21-1

I repeat, on a difficult pitch you have to be slightly more positive. If Babar fails here too, I wouldn't be surprised if Sharjeel opens in the next test.

He played out 18 overs of new Kookaburra to 3 seemers, whom has bowled almost 75 overs in 1.25 days so far. Had PAK gone to Tea 65/0 after 35 overs; Kiwis would have struggled. Blasting 30 of 30 by openers doesn't work on wickets that has lot for the new ball bowlers - check every innings of Warner on turners or seemers.

Southee has now bowled 24 overs in the game and they have scored 20 runs off him in those overs.

Seriously, come on.

How come this guy is playing 1st Test at almost 31 & Guptil became "almost legend" by that time!!!!!!!!

Hi guys What's the best match figures ever for a bowler in tests on debut? I guess this Grandhome guy gonna smash that record in grand fashion.

What's the best match figures ever for a bowler in tests on debut.

16/138 (?) by Hirwani, breaking 16/140 (?) by Massie for few runs. GH can break that still - need to take all of remaining 9 for another 70 or so .... But, he can break PAK-NZ Series record of Zahid, relatively easily - only 5 more to take..

Kiwis plan is to keep it as tight as possible here. They are doing well according to there plan.

You have to remember this is only our second hit out in New Zealand so obviously the batsmen are going to be abit more circumspect. Part of it is that they're still trying to adjust to the conditions.

thanks for the answer, and where do you rank this grandhome, just a one hit wonder or does he have a future?

One hit wonder.

He can be a handy bowler on a wicket that has a bit of grass, otherwise he doesn't have much of a future as his batting doesn't cut it, especially if he's going to continue batting at six.

Probably he'll play 3 more Test at home - 2 against us & other one against PAK. Not the best test to be honest, with due respect to both side's batting on seeming wickets.

Last time, after Lord's Test, I believe when everyone was calling Botham, Imran, Miller - I thought let him play 5 Test in IND - Woakes got "Rested" at Vizag, for bowling 15 overs in 1st Test. Similarly, Miraj is not going to take 9.5 wickets/Test at 2.2 economy & 12 average. So, hold your horse a little & let this innings finish ........... as of now, he is going to win MoM on debut.

Risky way to bat, but we're a one dimensional team aside from Sarfraz and Asad, so 'blunting the new ball' for 20-30 overs is all we know and letting Southee accumulate maiden after maiden.

Should've taken a page out of NZ's book earlier on the way they gave respect to good bowling but didn't hesitate one bit to put away the trash Rahat, Sohail, Amir and Yasir offered.

Even de Grandhomme did that.

This match is going no where ... we've lost matches before due to this extremely negative approach ... recall the match at Capetown in 2013 where both Misbah and Azhar put on a blockathon and then threw their wickets away and we collapsed from a position of strength to give an easy target to Saffers ... we don't seem to learn!

26 / 1

22 overs !!!

I think Pakistan really have bogged down too much here.

May be condition & bowling is too good. Though, I think this gives the best chance of win if the remaining batsmen apply themselves. Those 3 pacers won't last longer after this work rate, besides longer innings brings Yasir in the game & I believe Rahat will get some reverse in 2nd innings with semi old ball.

Obviously 80/1 would have been great, but this is probably better than 70/4.

Guys do you think if babar fails in this test series, he will be labelled another umar akmal, i mean considered only for LOIs ? Or will he still play in australian series. My guess it will be the 1st scenario, if he don't even get a fifty in these two tests, but may be mickey can persue management to still give him another go in australian series.

Will probably resting his bowlers for Misbah & YK - won't bowl Astle against them.

Why are we playing so slowly?. Speed up a bit for heaven sake.

This is the stage where all went awry in 1st innings, will we let that happen again, common sense says no because pitch is easier bowler more tired, sun shining, and batsman better accustomed to conditions. But hey pak batting and common sense don't go hand in hand.

Insha Allaah, Babar to play the innings of his life

(please don't get out while I'm typing this)
