Tuk tukking is not of much use on this pitch. Have to be positive. Else, a wicket will fall and you would have gone nowhere.

Cook is batting very poorly this series. Not reassuring stuff this.

Wagner should bowl the middle stump line and has to try to bring it back a little back.

No real chances yet. Just what England wanted.

Time for spin perhaps.

dafuuuuuuq. we just had a decent half-session

Gonna be like a deck of cards after lunch though

Captain Fantastic

He is truly one of our greatest batsmen. Needs to last the day, at least

I get more nervous when we start playing shots and scoring. Then we're one poorly thought sweep away from a collapse.

I'm too nervous to watch this.

Compton-ul-Haq

Shot of the innings that though.

Mockers?

Thanks James, first you give us Root, hype up Finn, try to sneak in another Yorkie in Bairstow into the squad, and now you're trying to get Cook out.

Compton just needs to believe in himself, doesn't look confident yet, but has the skill

Whenever I look up, I see Compton walking dejectedly with his head down. I immediately look up to the scoreboard to see if a wicket comes up, but then I realize it's just him trying to relax between deliveries.

Maybe one thing Cook needs to work on is helping new guys integrate. Strauss was good at that

His problem is clearly mental. He's very technically sound, you have to be to score runs in what I believe was one of the wettest starts to County cricket. But he may or may not be mentally strong enough for International cricket.

Compton looked terrible against Indian bowlers, even on this flat pitches not looking comfortable.

He was on and off against India, averaged 30-odd I think. He got starts, just never could convert.

I think the reason Root came out well is because he's a young lad, and he knows he will have his chances in the future.

But Compton is 29, and he knows that this chance may be it, and probably is buckling under the pressure.

How in the good name of Harvey Dent did we get out for 167 on this thing. Disgrace

50 up for Cook. Looked a touch embarrassed to be lifting his bat. You should be after that first innings!

Rutherford who couldn't buy a run against Finn and Anderson in the ODIs got more runs than we did on his pitch. Proper perspective.

Pietersen is the only one who can't be blame for the 1st innings debacle. This pitch is like one of the highways of Sri lanka

He got the best ball, but even Kevin limply played that yorker as if he hadn't choked the chicken in a good few weeks.

Compton needs to be watchful. Would love for him to get to the ton but he never looks 'in'

I feel like if he picks up a ton or two, he'll turn out to be a machine. But I'm all for dropping him now if he doesn't achieve it soon.

If you have seen the fall of wickets today, you will find it was neither swing nor spin that cost England dearly (except that gem of a 1st ball to KP, again it was a very good surprise block-hole delivery bowled at a perfect length/pace/line). It was the poor careless shot selection from their batters that lead to a dismal 1st inning total . Similarly 2 somewhat easy catches were also went down while NZ were batting (both of Rutherford's bat, who was playing superbly for a youngster on his debut).

This Pitch is an absolute belter (there wasn't much assistance for swing/spin) and there are no demons in it (BTW, Peter Fulton has scored over 40 runs on this pitch and still being not-out is the living proof of it). IMO, NZ need to get at least a lead of 300+ by the end of tomorrow's play. B'cos I doubt English batters will commit the same mistakes again on flat track like this. NZ will need to have at least 160 overs to dismiss this English side once again.

Said this herein this very thread 2 days back. At the current rate England batters(openers themselves) might erase most of the remaining deficit(154 runs) by this evening itself. It looks like, Draw could be the most likely result.

England need to show a bit of Mongrel here, they should look to establish a lead as quickly as possible, 30 overs tomorrow should be more than enough to bowl New Zealand out.

460/9d would suggest otherwise.

20 overs left in the day, can New Zealand find something with this older ball, the new one due in 13 overs...

Very good come back by England, sadly test is moving towards stalemate.

Were England players played arrogantly in first inning? I mean how else can you get out like that for 167 runs on a pitch like this?

All but one wicket was due to poor judgement and a bad bad bad shot, the likes of which you would see in village cricket.

Oh, that poor ball... Compo must be thinking why couldn't I get that one?

Don't be rash Compo!

Gets a crazy snorter out of nowhere. Compo is about to die.

Eng were not likely to make same mistakes again ....... they have very solid batters in top 5
