Last year in December, Abid Ali was batting at 61 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi when he was rushed to a cardiac hospital. He was diagnosed with a case of Acute Coronary Syndrome that kept him away from cricket for four months. On Friday, batting against the same opposition, albeit at a different venue, the right-hander scored his first first-class century since returning to first-class cricket.

Abid scored a brilliant 159 off 287 balls that saw Central Punjab to 418 for seven - in reply of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s imposing 436 - at the close of third day’s at the LCCA Ground in round seven of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23. Over the course of what was his 26th first-class ton, Abid struck 21 fours and two sixes in almost a six-hour-long innings that began yesterday evening.

He put 209 runs for the first wicket with Abdullah Shafique, who fell one run short of what would have been his seventh first-class century. Abdullah reclaimed the top spot as the leading run scorer (636 at 70.67) during his knock as he struck 11 fours and two sixes in his 168-ball 99. He began the day on 54 not out. Abid’s overnight score was 38.

Tayyab Tahir’s excellent form with the bat continued. He scored 62 not out off 75 balls (seven fours and two sixes) as the day belonged to Central Punjab’s batters.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Khalid Usman was the leading wicket-taker in the innings. The left-arm orthodox took three wickets – including the two openers – for 174 runs after Central Punjab resumed their innings on 99 for none.

In Abbottabad, Northern all-rounder Aamir Jamal delivered the best bowling performance of the season against Balochistan. The right-arm medium pacer took eight wickets for 120 in 30 overs as Balochistan made 375. This was Aamir’s third five-wicket haul in 18 first-class matches and bests his previous figures of five for 38.

Aamir announced himself at the world stage during the fifth T20I against England at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore when he defended 15 off the last over on his debut despite the presence of an experienced batter in Moeen Ali at the striker’s end.

Balochistan captain Asad Shafiq put up a solid fight with 131 off 224 balls (17 fours and a six) after starting the day on 47. Haris Sohail, who occupied the other end at the start of the day, added 13 runs to his overnight 66 as he became one of Aamir’s wickets after making 120-ball 79 (12 fours).

Northern were 68 for one in their second innings. They are still 48 runs behind Balochistan.

Khurram Manzoor scored the 32nd century of his first-class career as Sindh built a commanding second innings lead of 340 over Southern Punjab at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Khurram made 121 off 273 (15 fours) after beginning the day on 26. His partner and Sindh captain, Saud Shakeel, failed to add more to his overnight 21.

Sindh were 332 for nine and, with a solid lead in pocket, will look to make Southern Punjab bat as early as they can so they have ample time to bowl them out and secure their third win of the season.

Lahore, 5 November 2022: Sindh thumped Southern Punjab by 202 runs thanks to a consolidated performance by their bowlers. This is Sindh’s third win of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23.

Southern Punjab were set 346 to win on the final day of the seventh round but could manage only 143 as they were bowled out in 40.3 overs at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Muhammad Umar picked up three wickets for 41. Ghulam Mudassar, Asif Mehmood and Abrar Ahmed equally shared six wickets, while the other batter (Azam Khan) was run out.

Usman Salahuddin, who scored two centuries in the last match, put the innings top score of 47. He hit seven fours in 67 balls.

The other two matches ended in draws as no play was possible at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium due to heavy rain and bad light, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the third innings of the match, were 120 for one when play came to an end.

Central Punjab made 471 in 128.2 overs after beginning the day at 418 for seven.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Waqar Ahmed and Israrullah scored half-centuries. Waqar made 60 not out off 80 (11 fours and a six) and Israrullah made an unbeaten 83-ball 57 (six fours and two sixes).

Sindh's Mohammad Umar has been fined 30 per cent of his match-fee for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel during his side’s seventh round match against Southern Punjab in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Umar was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the PCB Code of Conduct, which reads as: “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during a match”.

The incident happened in the fifth over of Southern Punjab’s second innings when after dismissing the batter he directed his finger towards the pavilion, which could have provoked an aggressive reaction from the dismissed batter.

Umar pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Iftikhar Ahmed. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Tariq Rasheed and Alay Haider.

The seventh round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy saw Sindh bag their third win of the season as they rolled over Southern Punjab by 202 runs. Sindh’s previous two victories have been achieved by a 10-wicket margin.

The last round’s win has further consolidated Sindh’s position in the points table. They currently sit at the second spot and are just seven points away from top-ranked Northern. With only three more league matches remaining, Sindh now have a solid chance of securing a berth in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final for the first time since the revamp of the domestic structure ahead of the 2019-20 season.

Captained by Saud Shakeel, Sindh play Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who continue to have a poor season after winning the last two titles and languish as the bottom-ranked side with four losses in seven matches, at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in the eighth round, which commences tomorrow.

Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faced off in the fourth round with the former recording their first win of the season and that is when their campaign kicked off. Sindh will be eager to ensure that the result of their second meeting with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the same as the first one.

In the other two matches of the round, Northern play Central Punjab at the LCCA Ground in Lahore and Southern Punjab travel up north to face off Balochistan at the beautiful Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

Northern are the only other team this season to have bagged three wins. Their last two matches have ended in draws and if recent history is any indicator, their upcoming match promises to end with the two sides sharing points as Central Punjab’s all seven matches have been draws.

Southern Punjab are ranked fifth in the points table as their seven matches have produced two defeats and five draws. They are up against Balochistan, who have won and lost two each. While Southern Punjab suffered a defeat in their most recent match and their previous two matches ended as draws, Balochistan have had a mixed bag of results – a draw in the most recent, a win in the second last, and a defeat in the match before.

Top performers

Abdullah Shafique of Central Punjab regained the title of the leading run-scorer of the season during his first-innings 99 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the LCCA Ground. He now has 636 runs at 70.67.

Balochistan captain Asad Shafiq, after scoring a century, follows him on the chart with 604 runs at 54.91. These two are the only players with more than 600 runs in the competition.

Southern Punjab’s Usman Salahuddin and Central Punjab’s Azhar Ali are locked at the third spot with 598 runs each. While Usman averages 54.36, experienced Test cricketer Azhar has the best average amongst the top 10 run-getters as he scores an impressive 85.43 runs per dismissal.

Abrar Ahmed (of course, who else?) leads the table of the bowlers with most wickets this season. The Sindh mystery spinner has accumulated 40 wickets in just five matches. He recorded his best figures of the season in the last match (six for 61) and now has five five-wicket hauls.

Mohammad Ali of Central Punjab follows with 24 wickets at 25.54, while Abrar’s teammate Muhammad Umar is on the third spot with 23 scalps at an average of 27.39

Central Punjab’s Abdullah Shafique is in prime form in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season. He entered the eighth round as the leading run scorer and on Tuesday, the 23-year-old right-handed opener stroked his third century of the tournament against Northern on what was the first day of the first-class four-day affair at the LCCA Ground.

Central Punjab were 302 for five in 82 overs at the close of play with Abdullah’s 155, scored at an impressive strike rate of 70.45, standing out. He punched 20 balls for fours and deposited three over the boundary rope for maximums in his 220-ball innings.

Musa Khan got the better of opener Abid Ali and one-drop Mohammad Saad that reduced Central Punjab to 34 for two. Soon, Tayyab Tahir, who has been in good touch this season, was undone by Nauman Ali as problems compounded for Central Punjab with the scorecard now reading 50 for three.

Abdullah then took control of the day’s proceedings. He added important 92 runs with Qasim Akram, who made 38 off 97 before getting trapped LBW by Mubasir Khan, for the fourth wicket. The most crucial phase of the Central Punjab’s innings, however, was the rearguard partnership between Abdullah and Faheem Ashraf of 145 that shifted the momentum in their favour.

The partnership ended when Abdullah was caught behind off Aamir Jamal.

Abdullah now has 791 runs in 11 innings at a handsome average of 79.10. That he is in good form in the longer format augurs well for Pakistan who will host England and New Zealand for three and two Tests respectively over this winter. Abdullah has already made a name for himself in a brief seven-Test career by amassing 736 runs – which include two centuries and five half-centuries – at a brilliant average of 67.

On Wednesday, Faheem, who was not out on 68 off 108 (13 fours), will resume the proceedings in the company of Aamer Yamin, who was unbeaten on seven.

Due to heavy overnight rain and wet outfield, only two balls were bowled at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium during the match between Southern Punjab and Balochistan, who decided to bowl without contesting the toss.

Southern Punjab’s opener Umar Siddiq was dismissed on what was the second and last ball of the day by Khurram Shahzad as the scorecard stood at none for one.

The third match of the round between Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will commence tomorrow at the Pindi Cricket Stadium.

Centuries from Central Punjab’s Faheem Ashraf and Northern’s Mohammad Huraira were the highlight of day two of the four-day first-class affair between the two sides at the LCCA Ground.

All-rounder Faheem smashed his first-class career’s third century by converting his overnight 68 into 109 not out. The left-hander scored at a strike rate of 80, smashing 20 fours in his 137-ball knock, as Central Punjab made 385 after beginning the day at 302 for five.

Northern’s Musa Khan added two more wickets to his tally on Wednesday and returned four for 100. His fellow right-arm pacer Aamir Jamal took three wickets for 68.

Northern’s reply was led by 20-year-old opener Mohammad Huraira, who was unbeaten on 104 not out. The right-hander struck 15 fours in his 156-ball innings as Northern had managed 194 for three in 52.4 overs by the close of the day’s play.

He was joined by Umar Waheed (42 not out off 77) at the other end.

Two of the three Northern’s wicket were taken by off-spinner Bilal Asif, while left-arm orthodox Zafar Gohar sent the other batter back to the pavilion.

No play was possible in Abbottabad because of persistent rain.

Central Punjab had a second innings lead of 188 against Northern at stumps on day three of the four-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 match, thanks to Zafar Gohar’s splendid bowling performance.

The left-arm orthodox recorded his first-class career’s 16th five-wicket haul, returning incredible figures of six for 96 in 31.2 overs as Northern were bowled out for 333, in reply of Central Punjab’s 385, after beginning the day on 194 for three at the LCCA Ground.

Zafar snared five wickets on Thursday, including Umar Waheed’s who fell four runs short of a century. Umar converted his overnight 42 into 96. He batted for 186 balls, in which he hit 15 fours.

Central Punjab hurried to 136 for three in 25 overs after Abid Ali and Abdullah Shafique were dismissed. Mohammad Saad made 61 off just 64 balls (11 fours) and Tayyab Tahir was unbeaten on 58 that he gathered in only 61 balls, hitting six fours and a six.

Tayyab will have the company of Qasim Akram when the match resumes on Friday, the last day of the eighth round.

At the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium, Southern Punjab were 270 for six after Usman Salahuddin scored a century. Usman was unbeaten on 102 off 200 (11 fours). This is his third century of the season.

All-rounder Hassan Khan missed his century by 16 runs at number seven as he made 84 off 101 (13 fours and a six) before he was dismissed by Haris Sohail.

Khurram Shahzad and Taj Wali picked up two wickets each, while the other wicket was taken by Hussain Talat.

Meanwhile, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa took five points each as their match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium was abandoned.

The eighth round matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 between Central Punjab and Northern at the LCCA Ground and Southern Punjab and Balochistan at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium ended in draws on Friday.

After Central Punjab’s Tayyab Tahir scored his fourth century of the season and fifth of his first-class career, Northern were set 274 to win.

Central Punjab seemed on course to a victory with Northern losing a flurry of wickets at the start of their second innings. The scorecard at one point read 26 for three and then 77 for four. That’s when 20-year-old Mubasir Khan, who was the player of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22, stepped up and helped his team to a draw by holding his end strongly and knitting crucial partnerships.

Mubasir scored 58 not out off 98 balls, in which he struck 11 fours. He put a defiant 61-run stand with Umar Waheed (31 in 63).

Waheed had earlier stitched 51-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Umar Amin, who made 34 off 142, to push Central Punjab bowlers back and deny them any further inroads.

Northern remain on top of the points table following the draw with 122 points.

Central Punjab’s Tayyab began the day on 58 not out and helped his team to 221 for seven, scored at a run rate of 5.26. Tayyab recorded a sparkling century, bringing it up in 113 balls and smashing 10 fours and two sixes.

Northern’s Aamir Jamal and captain Nauman Ali took three wickets each.

Balochistan’s Abdul Wahid Bangalzai missed out a century by three runs against Southern Punjab at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Wahid made 97 runs in 130 balls, hitting 14 fours and a six, and laid a solid partnership with Hussain Talat, who was unbeaten on 53 in 89 balls.

Balochistan were 213 for four in 50 overs when stumps were drawn.

Earlier Southern Punjab were bowled out for 350 after beginning the day on 270 for six.

Usman Salahuddin added 33 runs to his overnight 102 before he was dismissed by Bilawal Iqbal, who took two wickets. The other two bowlers to take two wickets were Khurram Shahzad and Hussain.

Taj Wali was the pick of the bowlers for Balochistan with three for 57.

After the completion of the eighth round, third last, Sindh follow Northern by 13 points. Central Punjab are ranked third with 102 points – the are they only side to play all draws. Balochistan are fourth with 93 points. Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are fifth and sixth with 74 and 48 points.

Update in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 schedule

The last round match between Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be played at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi. The fixture was previously scheduled to take place at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium.

The venues for the other two matches remain the same.

LCCA Ground will host Sindh and Balochistan contest and Punjab Derby – Southern Punjab v Central Punjab – will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The 10th and last round of this year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will start on 20 November.
 
This first-class season has produced some exciting contests and outstanding individual performances and the penultimate round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 – that begins on Monday – promises more excitement with the two best sides locking horns in Karachi.

The iconic National Bank Cricket Arena in Karachi will host the fixture between top-ranked Northern and second-placed Sindh. The two sides have dominated the points table for majority of the season and seem on course to secure berths in the final.

While Northern are 13 points clear of Sindh with 122 points, Sindh will remain wary of third-placed Central Punjab who are only seven points behind them.

Northern enter this competition after securing a draw against star-studded Central Punjab at the LCCA Ground in Lahore thanks to a heroic fourth innings half-century from 20-year-old all-rounder Mubasir Khan.

The youngster was the player of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 and has proved to be a vital cog, providing the right balance with his crucial performances with the bat and ball this season.

Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bagged five points each in the last round as their match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium was abandoned. But, Sindh have been on a high. In the seventh round, they recorded their third win by beating Southern Punjab by 202 runs.

Northern and Sindh are the only sides with three wins this season. When they met earlier in the season, the match ended in a draw.

Central Punjab stay at the LCCA Ground where they play fourth-ranked Balochistan, who are the only other team in this edition to win a match (they have won two). Central Punjab are the only side to play all draws, but wins in the last two rounds can propel them to another Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.

When Central Punjab and Balochistan faced off earlier in the season that contest ended in a draw.

The third match of the round will be played between Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. The two sides faced off in the second round at the same venue with their match also ending in a draw.

The two teams are placed at the bottom of the points table – Southern Punjab fifth, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sixth.

Southern Punjab played out a draw against Balochistan at the same venue in the last round as the match was affected by rain.

Top performers

Abdullah Shafique, Usman Salahuddin and Tayyab Tahir scored centuries in the previous round. While Abdullah further strengthened his position as the leading run-scorer, Usman and Tayyab secured the second and third spots in the list.

Abdullah has 797 runs at 63.20 with three centuries and as many half-centuries. Usman, 733 runs at 61.08, is the only other player with more than 700 runs and an equal number of centuries and half-centuries as Abdullah.

Abdullah’s teammate Tayyab has the most centuries in the season and an impressive conversion rate. He has four centuries and one half-century and has accumulated 671 runs at 67.10.

There are not many changes in the top three wicket-takers since the last round. Despite Sindh not playing the last round, Abrar Ahmed stays at the top with 40 wickets at 17.25. Central Punjab’s Mohammad Ali is second with 24 scalps at 25.54 and Abrar’s teammate Muhammad Umar is third on the list with 23 scalps. Northern’s Mubasir Khan joins him on the third spot with the same amount of wickets at 31.26 after the eighth round.

Cricket Associations Championship 2022-23

Central Punjab thrashed Northern by an innings in the previous round as their domination in the non first-class tournament continued. They have six wins from eight matches – the most for any side – and lead the points table. Southern Punjab are second, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa third, Sindh fourth, Balochistan fifth and Northern sixth.

Central Punjab play Balochistan at the KCCA Stadium, Karachi in the ninth round which begins on Monday. Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa face off at the NBP Sports Complex. Sindh and Northern play at the UBL Sports Complex.

The ninth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 season began in Karachi and Lahore while the opening day was lost due to rain in Abbottabad. Northern who opted to bat in their game against Sindh at the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi) made great use of a batting friendly pitch as openers Mohammad Huraira and Hasan Raza combined for a 266-run stand.

Both Huraira and Hasan dominated the proceedings from the start as Sindh bowlers failed to make inroads.

Hasan was the first to reach three figures, the left-hander hit 19 fours in his 135 off 203 balls. He was eventually dismissed by Abrar Ahmed in the final session of play.

By stumps, Huraira was still at the crease as Northern reached 350 for one in 90 overs. The right-handed Huraira has so far hit 22 fours and one six in his 170 (279 balls). Umar Amin was unbeaten on 32, the two have so far added 84 runs for the second-wicket.

Balochistan made most of their bowling first decision against Central Punjab at the LCCA Ground after rain and a wet outfield reduced the day’s play to a single session.

Left-arm pacer Akif Javed did the damage by taking three wickets for 31 runs by close of play on the first day.

Qasim Akram was unbeaten on 24 when stumps were drawn after 23.3 overs due to bad light. The Central Punjab top-order consisting Abid Ali (2), Abdullah Shafique (15), Mohammad Saad (1) and Tayyab Tahir (14) fell cheaply.

Umar Amin and Qasim Akram scored hundreds for Northern and Central Punjab respectively on day-two of the ninth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches being played in Karachi and Lahore. There was once again no play in Abbottabad in the tie between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Southern Punjab due to overnight rain and a wet outfield.

Over at the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi), table-toppers Northern resumed their first innings at 350 for one and went onto cross the 600-run mark to finish with 605 for eight (declared) against Sindh.

Umar scored 140 off 198 balls (11 fours, two sixes) to spearhead his side’s batting performance following first day centuries by openers Hasan Raza and Mohammad Huraira. Faizan Riaz contributed 47 and Umar Waheed scored 35. Northern called-off their innings after 154.5 overs batting.

Sindh who are number two behind Northern in the points table, finished day-two at 52 for no loss (19 overs). Khurram Manzoor was batting on 20 and his opening partner Saim Ayub was 32 not out when stumps were drawn for the day.

Over at the LCCA Ground, Central Punjab made a resounding comeback against Balochistan courtesy a smashing century by promising all-rounder Qasim Akram. Resuming at the overnight score of 67 for four Central Punjab managed to post a hugely competitive 349-run total.

Qasim recorded his maiden first-class century and played a pivotal role in his side’s recovery. The right-hander hit 17 fours and one six in his 111 off 162 balls. Qasim added 140 runs for the fifth-wicket with Faheem Ashraf, the left-handed Faheem hit seven fours and a six in his 60.

Wicketkeeper Ali Shan provided the impetus to the innings from the lower-order by compiling 53 off 113 balls (seven fours), he was the last batter to be dismissed. Ali’s dismissal brought an end to the day’s play. Balochistan will start their first innings tomorrow.

Akif Javed who captured three wickets with his left-arm seam on day-one, added another scalp today to finish with four wickets for 97 runs. Kashif Bhatti, Bilawal Iqbal and Yasir Shah took two wickets apiece.

The pitches have been mostly flat but not as poor as they were in 2019-20. Bowlers with skills have taken wickets like Abbas, Abrar, Umer, Sameen etc

The batsman have made hay mainly and its been difficult to determine who is actually worthy of selection and who is not.
 
Huraria have treated abrar ahmed like a club level bowler.He is indeed one of the best player against spinners

Lahore, 16 November 2022: Sindh were guided towards potential safety by an undefeated century by promising batter Omair Bin Yousuf on day-three of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round nine fixture against Northern while the Central Punjab-Balochistan match was poised for a draw. Third consecutive day of the Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa match in Abbottabad was lost due to rain and a wet outfield.

Over at the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi), Sindh resumed their first innings from the overnight score of 52 for no loss in reply to Northern’s 605 for eight total. Middle-order batter Omair Bin Yousuf (101 not out 205 balls, 12 fours) was the star of the day for his side as his unbeaten century took Sindh to 345 for five (97.2 overs). Omair held the innings together to ensure his side stay poised towards a valuable draw.

Omair found good support from the seasoned wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed who joined Omair at 216 for five. The two have so far added 129 runs for their unbroken sixth-wicket stand. Sarfaraz was unbeaten on 62 off 76 balls (eight fours) when stumps were drawn for the day. Saim Ayub scored 60 while captain Saud Shakeel contributed 43.

Off-spinner Mubasir Khan took two wickets for Northern. Sindh would resume their innings tomorrow, 250 runs behind Northern with five first innings wickets intact.

Over at the LCCA Ground, Balochistan finished day-three at 219 for four in their first innings in reply to Central Punjab’s first innings 349-run total. Opener Imran Butt top-scored with 80 off 147 balls (11 fours). The right-hander provided Balochistan a 115-run first-wicket stand with Imam-ul-Haq (43 off 93 balls, seven fours, one six).

Abdul Wahid Bangalzai contributed 43 off 91 (five fours, two sixes). Central Punjab bowlers didn’t allow the Balochistan batters to get away as the run rate was kept under three. Left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar was the most successful bowler for Central Punjab with three wickets for 64 in 24 overs.

Balochistan will resume their innings 130-run behind Central Punjab tomorrow, at stumps on day-three Haris Sohail was unbeaten on 29, Hussain Talat was five not out.

The ninth round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 concluded at the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi) and the LCCA Ground, Lahore today (Thursday). Northern and Sindh played out a draw in Karachi while the Central Punjab-Balochistan tie also ended in a stalemate. The match between Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Abbottabad Stadium was abandoned without a single ball bowled due to persistent rain and a wet outfield. No play was possible on any of the four days.

At the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi), Sindh resumed their first innings from the overnight score of 345 for five (97.2 overs). Seasoned campaigner Sarfaraz Ahmed completed his 13th first-class century in the first session of the day. The right-hander scored 102 off 131 balls (11 fours, one six) before falling to off-spinner Mubasir Khan.

Sarfaraz added 218 runs for the sixth-wicket with Omair Bin Yousuf. Omair, the centurion from yesterday was dismissed for 150 off 293 balls (17 fours).

Sindh were bowled out for 476 in 144.4 overs, Northern collected a 129-run first innings lead. Northern captain and left-arm spinner Nauman Ali took five wickets for 130 while Mubasir finished with three for 65.

Northern then scored 101 for one in 26 overs before stumps were drawn for the final time in the match. Opener Mohammad Huraira followed his first innings century with an unbeaten 58 off 66 balls (eight fours). Umar Amin scored 41. Zahid Mehmood took the only wicket to fall in Northern’s second innings.

Over at the LCCA Ground, Balochistan resumed their first innings at 219 for four. They lost their last six wickets for the addition of 99 runs to concede a 31-run lead. Hussain Talat fought hard on day-four with an unbeaten 76 off 103 balls (eight fours, four sixes). Left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar completed his five-fer, he ended the innings with figures of 33-8-94-5. Off-spinner Bilal Asif took three wickets.

Central Punjab batters Abdullah Shafique and Muhammad Saad registered unbeaten half-centuries as the match ended in a draw. Abdullah who is the leading run-scorer of the ongoing season scored 55 off 126 balls (eight fours) while Saad contributed 57 off 143 (five fours, one six). Kashif Bhatti with one for 40 was the only wicket-taker for Balochistan.

Some winds being taken out of the sails from this tournament last week weeks with all the rainouts & bad light.

Bit disappointing because it's been pretty decent to watch in terms of the matches that have been broadcasted.
 
All these domestic performances should be taken with a pinch of salt, vast majority of these games have been played on Highways and usual senior TTFs looking brilliant due poor standard of cricket domestically.

Nope. Not at all. Only Pindi has been batsmen friendly. Otherwise it’s been competitive between bat and ball
 
The tenth and final round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 season begins at three venues across the country tomorrow (Sunday). Number two in the points table Sindh will take on Balochistan at the LCCA Ground, Lahore, fifth placed Southern Punjab play third placed Central Punjab in the Punjab derby at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore and top-ranked Northern face bottom placed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

The Sindh-Balochistan match is of vital importance for Sindh who are harbouring hopes of playing their first final of the prestigious domestic trophy since the tournament was revamped as a six-team competition in the 2019-20 season. In the ninth round, Sindh drew their high scoring home tie against Northern at the National Bank Cricket Arena (National Stadium, Karachi).

Sindh at present have Central Punjab breathing down their neck, the two have a mere five point gap – Sindh are at 118 and Central Punjab have a 113 points tally at the conclusion of the ninth round. The Saud Shakeel-led Sindh cannot afford to slip-up in their last match. Both Sindh and Central Punjab would be playing their matches a mere 100-metre or less apart – LCCA Ground and Gaddafi Stadium to add another twist to the intriguing 10th round tale.

Sindh need to look for an outright win or ensure that they don’t lag behind Central Punjab in terms of the bonus points in case they draw the match, a loss can seal their fate in case of a win or a draw for Central Punjab with bonus points grabbed.

The Mohammad Saad-led Central Punjab played a rain-affected draw against Balochistan at the LCCA Ground in the previous round. They would have to make a big effort to push for a win against Southern Punjab to improve their chances of a final’s berth. The two sides had drawn the first match of the Punjab derby in October at the Multan Cricket Stadium.

Southern Punjab who are at the fifth spot would be hoping to salvage something out of what has been a disappointing season for them with a victory, they are yet to win a match in the season having drawn six games besides two defeats. Southern Punjab had their ninth round fixture against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa washed out in Abbottabad.

Northern have all but confirmed their place in the final following their draw against Sindh and only a big defeat and victories for Sindh and Central Punjab in the tenth round can halt their progress to the tournament decider.

Northern currently have a 132 points tally with three wins and six draws from the first nine rounds. Defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would be hoping to upset the table-toppers to finish on a high following their worst season to date in the revamped format. They languish at the bottom with a mere 53 points (three draws, four defeats, two abandoned matches).

Top performers

Openers Abdullah Shafique – Central Punjab and Mohammad Huraira – Northern, are the only two batters to have reached the 800-run mark so far. Abdullah tops the list of tournament run-getters with 867 runs at 72.25 (three centuries and four fifties).

Huraira who scored 173 and 58 not out against Sindh in the ninth round has now tallied 800 runs at 72.73 (three centuries, two fifties). Southern Punjab’s seasoned performer Usman Salahuddin is at number three with 733 runs at 61.08 (three centuries, three fifties).

Sindh’s Abrar Ahmed continues to mystify batters with his leg-spin in the ongoing season. Abrar is on the top of the bowling list with 43 wickets in six matches – five five-fers – at an average of 21.95.

Northern’s off-spinner Mubasir Khan is number two on the list with 26 wickets in nine games at 30.15 – one five-fer.

Central Punjab pacer Mohammad Ali is at number three with 24 wickets at 25.54 – two five-fers.

northern most likely to get into another final, another win for their positive approach as they seem to have hoovered up batting points even in draws, 9 games and 9 draws is shambolic for punjab, yet again strange selections tend to plague that team despite have the top run scorer of the season.

sindh has benefitted from dropping some of its old guard, with younger players like abrar and umar doing well with the ball, and bin yousuf, saad khan and saim ayub showing some form too. southern punjab seem to be stuck in a bit of no mans land as they continue to struggle to develop their youth players.

KP devoid of Iftikhar seem to have totally lost their leadership, from finalists last year to scraping the bottom of the table, one of the most consistent fc teams in Pakistan seem to have completely lost their mojo. Balochistan continue to be balochistan, however emergence of haseebullah khan as a local youngster is a positive.

there seems to be a general theme however, or the teams which best promote and develop their younger players doing well. hoping teams like CP and SP take note going forward. an OK season, but still far too many draws.

Pathetic pitches... Everyone is hitting centuries for fun and so many match are being drawn without any win/loss results..
Where did all the talk about pitches go from chairman? First that drop in drama and investment from big banks and companies in drop ins.. Then taking u turn and telling us that it is not feasible but we are bringing soil from aus to make pacy tracks and we will see different pitches being prepared this season... All rubbish... Look at how mediocre cricketers are hitting centuries and having fun..Eg: Abdullah gets exposed with incoming delivery as he leaves the gate opened and bat comes across.. But instead of working on that, he is having fun on these phattas and once quality bowling and alien conditions come, he'll again get exposed.. That is our players' failures main reason.. Instead of working on their weakness, they score runs on these pitches and think they are again in form and fail again when come back.. Same issue with Haider, Khushdil, asif.. They don't work on weakness of short pitch fast bowling but score runs in psl in 1 or 2 innings and make come back..
The bowlers who are even performing well on these phattas should come straight into the test team.. Bcz they'll not find worst conditions than these internationally... Abrar and umar are must...

Sindh made a formidable start to their bid of reaching the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 final courtesy centuries by Khurram Manzoor and captain Saud Shakeel on the opening day of their tenth round tie against Balochistan at the LCCA Ground, Lahore on Sunday.

Southern Punjab also made an explosive start in search of their first win of the season with Zeeshan Ashraf scoring a blazing century against Central Punjab at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore while table-toppers Northern were sent packing for 223 against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Shoaib Akhtar Stadium, Rawalpindi.

Sindh who are currently number two in the points table did their chances of securing a final’s berth no harm by a powerful batting performance on day-one against Balochistan after opting to bat first. Seasoned opener Khurram led the way with an unbeaten 174 off 258 balls (24 fours, one six) – his third century of the season. After a 70-run opening stand with Saim Ayub (41), Khurram was joined by his captain Saud.

The two took control of the proceedings and dominated the Balochistan bowlers with an unbroken 279-run alliance for the second-wicket. Saud scored his fourth century of the ongoing season, the stylish left-hander was batting on 124 off 159 balls (13 fours, one six) when stumps were drawn for the day – Sindh ended the day at 349 for one (75 overs).

Southern Punjab made Central Punjab pay for their decision to field first at the Gaddafi Stadium. Left-handed opener Zeeshan Ashraf scored a scintillating 145 off 230 balls (22 fours, three sixes) to lead the way. Imran Rafiq was batting on 58 off 131 balls (eight fours, one six) when play was called-off in the 75th over due to bad light.

Zeeshan and Imran added 140 runs for the third-wicket. Southern Punjab were 270 for three at close of play. Central Punjab who are searching for a bagful of points in order to reach the final would need to claw back into contention tomorrow by bowling out their opponents for a manageable first innings score before potentially recovering the initiative with the bat.

Northern had a poor start to their match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Shoaib Akhtar Stadium as they were bowled out for 223 after being asked to bat first. Wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir held the innings together with 82 off 158 balls (seven fours, one six). All-rounders Mubasir Khan and Aamir Jamal contributed 31 runs each.

Ihsanullah took four while Niaz Khan took three wickets. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were six for one when stumps were drawn for the day.

To be fair, they are not playing Mohammad Ali & Faheem because they have likely been selected to the squad. Pakistan certainly cannot afford more fast bowler injuries and both have played a lot of FC matches lately so a bit of rest is needed too.

Will be interesting to see which pacers selected. Naseem, Haris & Faheem are likely locks while Hamza/Ali or both may get selected along with Abrar/Zafar/Nawaz as spin options.

Sindh further consolidated their chances of a final’s appearance in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 season by cruising past the 600-run mark in the first innings against Balochistan in their tenth round match at the LCCA Ground, Lahore while Southern Punjab were helped by centuries from Salman Ali Agha and Imran Rafiq on day-two of their tie against Central Punjab at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore on Monday. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the other hand took a slender first innings lead against table-toppers Northern at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

At the LCCA Ground, Khurram Manzoor and captain Saud Shakeel resumed the Sindh first innings at 349 for one. The two took the partnership to 279 before the seasoned Khurram was dismissed by left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti for 174 off 260 balls (24 fours, one six). Saud fell for 181 off 259 balls (19 fours, one six). The left-hander spent 414 minutes at the crease during his outstanding innings. Omair Bin Yousuf who had scored a century in the previous game in Karachi scored 71 off 132 (nine fours, one six).

Fawad Alam (55 not out, 135 balls, four fours) and Saad Khan (57 not out, 113 balls, six fours, one six) had both passed their fifties when stumps were drawn for the day. The two have so far added 103 runs for the fifth-wicket. Sindh finished day-two at 607 for four – 155 overs. A draw will all but guarantee Sindh a place in the five-day tournament final that will be played from 26 November.

Southern Punjab resumed their first innings at 270 for three at the Gaddafi Stadium. Middle-order batter Salman Ali Agha led the way for his side on day-two with an imperious 158 not out off 168 balls (23 fours, one six). Salman added 134 runs for the fourth-wicket with Imran who converted his overnight unbeaten half-century into a 117-run innings. Imran faced 211 balls and hit 17 fours and a six.

Skipper Hasan Ali blazed a quickfire 38 not out off 24 balls (five fours, two sixes) as Southern Punjab declared their innings at an imposing 550 for eight total. Central Punjab openers Imran Dogar (39 not out) and Abid Ali (35 not out) provided their side a confident 70-run start in 20 overs before stumps were drawn for the day.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resumed their first innings at six for one and reached 241 for five by close of play on day-two. Middle-order batter Kamran Ghulam top-scored with 81 off 128 balls (10 fours and one six). Talented youngster Maaz Khan was unbeaten on 70 (178 balls, eight fours, one six) when stumps were drawn for the day. Opener Israrullah scored 49 runs, Kashif Ali with two for 47 was the most successful Northern bowler. Northern had been dismissed for 223 runs in their first innings on day-one.

Maaz Sadaqat currently at 70 not out for KPK. Huge props to KPK for not dropping him. In his first two matches, he had 8, 0, 0, 0 but he had been exceptional in the 2nd XI during FC & T20's so they have stuck with him and moved him in the middle opener as he was struggling opening & it has paid off.

This is good development and that is what you want to see. If a player has earned a spot with his performances at lower level, he needs to be given a long enough leash to prove himself, especially when he is a talented 17 year old with potential. Hopefully he can continue to build on this.
 
So more easy runs on dead highways for most batsmen. pakistani domestic cricket is shockingly poor, as soon as test side plays on a slightly sporting wicket they will be found wanting due to lack of technical ability. You know when hacks like khurram manzoor and Sarfraz are scoring heavily how bad the domestic game is.

Day-three of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy tenth round was staged at three venues today (Tuesday). Sindh and Central Punjab are poised for draws against Balochistan and Southern Punjab respectively at the LCCA Ground and Gaddafi Stadium Lahore while Northern are facing a defeat after a poor day against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the Shoaib Akhtar Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

The players selected for the Pakistan-England Test series were withdrawn from Sindh’s side and were replaced by reserves or by players competing in the CA Championship matches in Karachi. The players withdrawn include Saud Shakeel (replaced by Danish Aziz), Sarfaraz Ahmed (replaced by Muhammad Hasan), Zahid Mehmood (replaced by Arish Ali Khan) and Abrar Ahmed (replaced by Aaliyan Mehmood).

Sindh declared their first innings at 644 for six after resuming at 607 for four. Saad Khan was dismissed today for 87 0ff 141 balls (nine fours, one six). Fawad Alam returned undefeated on 62 off 168 balls.

Kashif Bhatti with three wickets was the most successful bowler for Balochistan. In reply to Sindh’s mammoth score, Balochistan finished the day at 240 for two with Imran Butt scoring an unbeaten 105 off 171 balls (18 fours). Abdul Wahid Bangalzai scored 52 while Imran’s opening partner Haseebullah contributed 44. When stumps were drawn for the day captain Asad Shafiq (35 not out) was at the crease with Imran.

Central Punjab resumed their first innings at 75 for no loss. Openers Abid Ali (37) and Imran Dogar (44) perished in the first session. Tayyab Tahir fell for 23. At this stage in form all-rounder Qasim Akram joined captain Mohammad Saad. From 129 for three, the pair took the score to 351 in a super fourth-wicket alliance worth 222 runs. Qasim scored the second century of his short first-class career having also notched a century in the previous round.

The former Pakistan U19 captain was dismissed for 138 off 159 balls (24 fours, one six) by Sameen Gul who took two wickets for 83. Saad provided great support to Qasim and reached his own century, the right-hander was unbeaten on 135 off 213 balls (15 fours, one six) when stumps were drawn for the day. Central Punjab will resume tomorrow at 415 for four, Southern Punjab scored 550 for eight (declared) in their first innings.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa resumed their first innings at 241 for five, the lower-order performed superbly to take their side to an imposing 444-run total – 221-run first innings lead. Maaz Sadaqat was dismissed for 91. Mohammad Imran (55 not out), Khalid Usman (38) and Sajid Khan (23) contributed efficiently to deter the Northern bowlers.

Northern were then reduced to 46 for four by close of play (175 runs behind Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). Imran followed his batting performance with a three-wicket spell.

Lahore, 23 November 2022: Northern suffered their first defeat of the tournament as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ended an otherwise disappointing season on a high on the fourth day of the tenth and final round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 tournament at the Shoaib Akhtar Stadium, Rawalpindi. Sindh confirmed their spot in the final for the first time under the revamped domestic season (2019-20 onwards) by playing out a dominant draw against Balochistan at the LCCA Ground, Lahore while Central Punjab narrowly missed out on a final’s berth after a stalemate against Southern Punjab at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.

Northern will take on Sindh in the five-day tournament decider at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore from Saturday, 26 November.

Northern finished with 135 points to top the table. Sindh occupied the second spot with 128 while Central Punjab stood third with 124 points. Balochistan accumulated 114 points to finish fourth. Southern Punjab had to contend with a fifth spot with a tally of 89 points and despite their impressive tenth round win, defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa ended at the sixth spot with 78 points.

On Wednesday, Balochistan resumed their first innings at 240 for two. Imran Butt who had reached his hundred yesterday went onto score 195 off 314 balls (35 fours). Imran added 210 runs for the third-wicket with his captain Asad Shafiq who also crossed the three figures mark. The seasoned Test batter was dismissed for 105 off 144 balls (19 fours).

Balochistan however, lost their last eight wickets for 93 runs and were bowled out for 485 in 132.5 overs. Left-arm spinner Danish Aziz who was drafted in the eleven yesterday took five wickets for 75 runs. Off-spinner Aaliyan Mehmood took three wickets.

Sindh then asked Balochistan to follow-on, Balochistan were 31 for one when stumps were drawn for the final time in the match.

Central Punjab were bowled out for 490 (119.2 overs) in their first innings in the first session today to hand Southern Punjab a 60-run lead. Captain Muhammad Saad was dismissed for 182 off 280 balls (20 fours, one six). All-rounder Aamer Yamin scored 50 off only 43 balls (seven fours, one six). Skipper Hasan Ali and Hassan Khan took three wickets each for Southern Punjab.

Southern Punjab had another excellent outing with the bat as Usman Salahuddin finished the first-class season with an unbeaten 100 off 134 balls (10 fours, three sixes). Opener Sharon Siraj contributed 74 runs (121 balls, 12 fours).

The match was declared as draw with Southern Punjab at 216 for two in 55 overs.

Northern resumed their second innings at 46 for four. The lower-order failed to offer much resistance to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bowlers as Northern were bowled out for 171 in 73.5 overs to hand over their opponents an innings and 50-run victory.

Faizan Riaz did not come out to bat due to an injury. Wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir who scored 82 in the first innings, fought hard in the second innings as well with 62 off 158 balls (eight fours).

Hasan Raza scored 45 runs. Off-spinner Sajid Khan took five wickets for 50 in 20.5 overs. Mohammad Imran captured three wickets for 47 in 17 overs.

Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament Quaid-e-Azam Trophy is set to have a new champion as last season’s finalists Northern take on Sindh in the five-day final at the headquarters of Pakistan cricket, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium from Saturday. Northern have been the finalist twice since the revamp of the domestic system in 2019-20. They would be hoping to make it a case of third time lucky after losing out on the title both in 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons.

Sindh are appearing in their first final under the revamped system. They will be looking forward to clinch second title in this season, after winning their maiden National T20 Cup, held earlier this year in Multan. The five-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final will be streamed live on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s YouTube channel and broadcast live on PTV Sports. The toss will take place at 0900, while the first ball will be bowled at 0930. This is also the first final to be staged at the GSL since under the new domestic system, Karachi’s National Stadium (now known as the National Bank Cricket Arena) staged the last three Quaid-e-Azam Trophy finals.

Both sides will be missing some key performers in the final as Pakistan’s Test squad begins preparations for the series against England. Northern’s captain Nauman Ali, Sindh captain Saud Shakeel, wicketkeeper-batter Sarfaraz Ahmed and spinners Abrar Ahmed and Zahid Mehmood would all be engaged as members of the Test squad.

Despite the absence of some seasoned and top performers of the ongoing season, the final is set to produce riveting cricket with the teams competing for the historic tournament trophy and the winners’ purse of PKR 10,000,000.

Both captains have meanwhile expressed their desire to lift the trophy at the headquarters of PCB. Khurram Manzoor said, “The players are focused on the final, they have taken one game at a time in the tournament and are looking forward to playing the same brand of cricket in the final.

“We have played quality cricket throughout the tournament, and we are looking to repeat the same to get positive result in the big game.

“It is a great honour for us that four players of our team are currently on national assignment. It is an opportunity for other players to step up and grab the opportunities on offer with both hands.”

Umar Amin said, “Our team have completely dominated the tournament from the start and we are looking to repeat the same performance to lift the trophy. We have kept things very simple, we will try to keep it that way in the final as well to get positive outcome from the big game.

“I am fond of Mohammad Huraira’s temperament and thinking when he is batting. This is a great sign for the team and for Huraira as well that at this age he is scoring runs and that too since last year.”

Top performers:

Central Punjab opener Abdullah Shafique tops the run-getters chart with a tally of 867 runs at 72.25 (three centuries, four fifties). Southern Punjab middle-order batter Usman Salahuddin is a mere five runs behind with 862 runs at 66.31 (four hundreds, three fifties).

Northern’s Mohammad Huraira who topped the batting charts last year (his debut first-class season) can accomplish the feat once again in his young career as he will start the final with 803 runs – needing 65 to overtake Abdullah. Huraira averages 61.77 going into the final, his run tally includes three centuries and two fifties.

In the absence of Saud, Sindh’s pair of Omair Bin Yousuf and Khurram Manzoor would aim to score heavy in the tournament decider. They enter the big match with 604 (average 50.33, three centuries, one fifty) and 602 runs (average 54.73, three centuries, two fifties) to their credit respectively – occupying 11th and 12th spots in the batting charts.

Abrar’s outstanding season has earned him a Test squad spot, the right-arm mystery spinner bagged 43 wickets in a mere 12 innings (average 21.95, five five-wicket hauls) to top the bowling charts. Northern’s all-rounder Mubasir Khan is number two with his off-spin taking 28 wickets in 10 matches at 31.54 (one five-wicket haul). Northern’s seam bowling all-rounder Aamir Jamal is at the third spot with 25 wickets in eight appearances while Sindh’s pacer Muhammad Umar is fifth with 24 wickets in eight games.

this is actually in line with historic trends for Pakistan in tests, so I'm not surprised 4 day games have even less results. think games have very similar draw ratio to test matches with stronger teams.

theres actually a massive problem in that teams dont seem to mind drawing, lots of games petering out into the 4th day.

id just make it a 5 day competition, help develop spinners and increase a bit of batsman technical skill. cos i dont see the pitches ever changing given they've been like this the 25 odd years I've been watching.
