Asif Mehmood’s maiden first-class half-century and Fawad Alam’s unbeaten 38 staged a remarkable comeback for Sindh at the close of day one of the five-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23 first-class final against Northern at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

Sindh ended the day on 230 for seven in 81.1 overs with Asif and Fawad knitting an unbroken 79-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Test batter Fawad was joined by right-handed batter Asif with the Sindh scorecard reading 151 for the loss of seven wickets.

The pair played throughout the evening session in which 77 runs were added by both batters in 24.1 overs.

Asif, coming to bat at number eight, struck six fours and two sixes during his 89-ball 56 not out. Fawad on the other hand smashed five boundaries during his 115-ball innings.

Earlier, Northern captain Umar Amin won the toss and decided to field first. Northern’s fast bowler Musa Khan made the first two breakthroughs dismissing Sindh’s captain Khurram Manzoor (16 off 30 balls) and Saim Ayub (29 off 67, four fours) with 62 runs on the board.

After the departure of the opening pair, Saad Khan coming to bat at number three was joined by right-handed batter Omair Bin Yousuf and both took the attack to the Northern bowlers. The pair added 50 runs for the third wicket before Saad was dismissed caught behind off the bowling of Aamir Jamal for 35 after lunch. Left-handed Saad struck four fours and one six during his 63-ball stay at the crease. Omair was next to go getting lbw to off-spinner Mubasir Khan for a 75-ball 36, which included five boundaries.

The afternoon session belonged to Northern bowlers as five Sindh wickets fell after the lunch interval and only 61 runs were added in 28 overs.

For Northern, Mubasir and Test fast bowler Musa bagged two wickets apiece, while Kashif Ali and Aamir scooped a wicket each.

Scores in brief:

Sindh 230-7, 81.1 overs (Asif Mehmood 56 not out, Fawad Alam 38 not out, Omair Bin Yousuf 36, Saad Khan 35, Saim Ayub 29; Musa Khan 2-53, Mubasir Khan 2-59)

Dhani is finished.

Its sad he lost his focus on cricket and startrd feeling like a star beofre he did anything of note right now looks the worst pacer in the game.

I am liking Huraira but looks he will find his success in int cricket in the middle order rather then opening.

He is outstanding vs spin maybe a bit too arrogant for my liking but i was not convinced by his batting vs new ball.

Mohammad Huraira’s fourth century of the season and Umar Amin’s unbeaten 79 put Northern in a position of strength on the second day of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final against Sindh at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Sunday.

Huraira and Umar’s unbroken 269-run partnership for the third wicket helped Northern post 296 for two in 63 overs at stumps. Northern are leading by 12 runs with eight first-innings wickets in hand.

The right-handed batter Huraira, who entered into the final with 803 runs, is now topping the batting charts with 996 runs. The 20-year-old also topped last year’s first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 986 runs.

In pursuit of Sindh’s first innings score of 284, Northern’s innings started poorly as Hasan Raza (14) and Abdul Faseeh (0) were dismissed by Muhammad Umar with 27 runs on the board in the ninth over.

Opening batter Huraira was joined by captain Umar and both batters played shots at will, never allowing Sindh bowlers to settle down. Huraira brought up his fourth century of the tournament off 118 balls. His 150 runs came off 161 and returned unbeaten on 193 off 202 balls, smashing 29 fours and two sixes.

Left-handed Umar’s 145-ball innings included 11 boundaries.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 230 for seven, Sindh could only add 54 more runs as they were bowled out for 284 in 92.5 overs.

Asif Mehmood (78, 111b, 9x4, 2x6), Aaliyan Mehmood (4) and Shahnawaz Dahani (0) were the Sindh batters dismissed today. Fawad Alam returned undefeated on 61 off 148 balls, smashing eight fours. Aamir Jamal and Musa Khan bagged three wickets each, while Mubasir Khan finished with two for 59 runs in 26 overs.

Don't know why 40 year old Azhar Ali with poor recent test form will be playing in test and 20 year old exciting talent Huraira who has been piling runs match after match is not.

Umm agreed that it’s maybe time to move on from Azhar Ali, but there is a middle ground.
There’s players ahead in line piling on the runs much longer like Saud, Ghulam and Usman Salahuddin. There’s also Shan Masood.
Let Huraira dominate a couple more seasons.

IK would have been picked Huraira at this stage , there were many ahead of Wasim, Waqar, Aaqib and Inzi but he looked the talent and current form , not stats and picked them , and all of them were very young , some even young than Huraira's current age.

They say you can apply that logic (sometimes) with bowlers but with batsmen you need the mileage under the belt, specially in test cricket.
The risk you run with fast tracking undercooked batsmen is that if they fail, they get labeled quickly and get lost in the system. In Pakistan, it’s better to bring a 23-25 year old ready product who can click from the get go as the media and fans are super impatient.

Btw, Inzi had already played and dominated 2 FC seasons with UBL and he scored
almost 800 runs at an average of 50 in QEA Trophy. In the BCCP Patron’s Cup, the man from Multan was the top scorer with an average of 81. 1990/91 was also a successful year with an average of 46, 50 and 80 in three domestic tournaments. Before playing for Pakistan, young Inzamam had played 56 First class or Pakistan A matches.
Inzi was someone who had made an excellent start to his international career. He came after acing the domestic system the PCB had devised.

Yeah dont see the point of Huraira being fast tracked. I think he is a genuine 20-21 and another season or two will not do him any harm

Its Saud and Kamran that needs their opportunity first.

Aliyan has good potential.

Nice high arm action and gets some spin. He is alteast 21 not 17 as listed but looks a decent prospect better then Abrar imo.

Huraira’s double-century, Umar Amin and Umar Waheed centuries give Northern 309-run lead

Lahore, 28 November 2022:

Mohammad Huraira’s double century and centuries by Umar Amin and Umar Waheed have given Northern a 309-run lead over Sindh at the close of day three of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

Resuming their first innings at the overnight score of 296 for two in pursuit of Sindh’s first-innings score of 284 all out, Huraira and skipper Umar Amin started their innings where they left off the previous day. During the course of the morning session, the right-handed batter Huraira brought up his double-century off 217 balls, which included 31 fours and two sixes. Umar Amin was later joined by right-handed Umar Waheed and the pair stitched 48 runs for the fourth wicket. The Northern skipper was next to return back to the hut not before scoring his fourth century of the tournament. The 33-year old struck 13 fours during his 207-ball 114 knock.

Next batter to join Umar Waheed was Mubasir Khan, who was dismissed by off-spinner Aaliyan Mahmood for four runs with the Northern scorecard reading 389 for five in 87 overs. At that point of the match, wicketkeeper-batter Rohail Nazir and Umar Waheed got together and the pair knitted a 155-run partnership for the sixth wicket.

During this stand, Umar Waheed brought up his first century in the tournament. He was dismissed by Asif Mehmood after scoring 109 off 162 balls, smashing 21 boundaries. Rohail Nazir was dismissed by Aaliyan six runs shy of his second century of the tournament. His 94-run innings included seven fours and two sixes, which came off 149 balls.

Northern were finally bowled out for 593 in 141 overs.

For Sindh, Aaliyan and Muhammad Umar bagged four wickets apiece.

Sindh – the champions of National T20 this season – will come out tomorrow to start their second innings with a deficit of 309 runs.

Congratulations to Northern - after heartbreaks in 2019 and 2021 they finally win the big prize.

great for northern, the most positive of the first class teams, and the one that gives the most opportunities to youngsters. great to see their two most influential players, hurraira and mubasir have come through the system.

only real disappointment for them would have been that abdul faseeh and mehran mumtaz have failed to kick on. aamir jamals bowling would be a plus too.

also for sindh, great to see them reap the benefits of giving younger players a chance, Mohammad umar is a good seamer for these conditions, and abrar has already made it to the test team. saim ayub would be disappointed with his season, after a lively start fizzled out pretty bad.

Lahore, 29 November 2022:

Northern created history here at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday when they defeated Sindh by an innings and 55 runs to win their maiden Quaid-e-Azam Trophy title inside four days of the five-day final. Northern’s captain Umar Amin bagged the winning trophy and also PKR 10,000,000.

Northern have been the finalist twice since the revamp of the domestic system in 2019-20. They were lucky the third time after losing out on the title both in 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons.

Starting their second innings with a deficit of 309 runs, Sindh lost six wickets in the first session and were 105 for six at the lunch interval. That the Sindh managed to score 254 in 56.2 overs was largely due to Fawad Alam’s 43rd first-class century which included a 63-run partnership with first innings top run-getter Asif Mehmood (21 off 33 balls) and a 62-run eighth wicket partnership with Muhammad Umar (36 off 31).

Fawad’s 113-run innings came off 130 balls, which included 18 fours.

For Northern, Aamir Jamal and Musa Khan bagged three wickets apiece, while Mehran Mumtaz took two wickets.

This edition of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will also be remembered for Northern’s complete dominance in the tournament. Mohammad Huraira topped the batting charts with 1024 runs and was awarded best batter of the tournament. For his match-winning double-century, Huraira was also named player of the final. The 20-year-old Mubasir Khan for his all-round performance (522 runs and 31 wickets) was named player of the tournament. He was also named the player of the tournament in last year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Another young 21-year-old Rohail Nazir was named best wicket-keeper of the tournament. He completed 43 dismissals behind the stumps and scored 434 runs in the tournament.

Sindh’s Abrar Ahmed was named best bowler of the tournament, he took 43 wickets in 12 innings. The mystery spinner couldn’t feature for his side in the final as he, for his outstanding performance, was named in Pakistan Men’s squad for the three-match Test series against England, starting from 1 December at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi.

Congrats to Northern for a well deserved victory and its nice to see both teams who played their youngsters and were rewarded for it. Northern have been doing it for a while and they have been the most exciting team to watch as a result but it was a great surprise from Sindh to see players like Saim/Omair/Abrar/Umar being played and often carrying the team in the T20 & FC.

Huraira & Mubasir have made themselves staples & best part of the Northern team. Both are good bets to get a debut in a year or so. The most surprising development from them seems to be Jamal and he had an excellent final too. Pakistan are really desperate for a pace allrounder and it would be great if he can fill into that role.

A statistical review of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2022-23

Lahore, 30 November 2022:

Northern – the champions of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 65th edition – outclassed Sindh in the final to hold the trophy along with PKR 10,000,000. Umar Amin-led Northern side achieved this feat at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, the venue that was hosting the premier first-class tournament’s final after 2013-14 season Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.

Northern have been the finalist twice since the revamp of the domestic system in 2019-20. They were lucky the third time after losing out on the title both in 2019-20 and 2021-22 seasons. Meanwhile, Sindh – who won their maiden National T20 title this year – made their first appearance in the final since the domestic structure revamp.

Dominant performance from Northern to clinch their maiden title

Northern were dominant throughout the tournament, having topped the six-team points table with 135 points ahead of the final. Over the course of the double round-robin stage, which started from 27 September, Northern won three matches, lost one and played six drawn games.

The charged-up Northern side demonstrated supremacy in all departments of the game in their successful campaign. In the batting charts, Mohammad Huraira topped the table with 1024 runs, while Umar Amin occupied fourth spot with 774 runs. In the bowling charts, Aamir Jamal and Mubasir Khan took 31 wickets apiece and grabbed second and third spots, respectively. In the fielding department, Northern’s Rohail Nazir bagged 43 dismissals behind the stumps and gained the top position.

The young-trio’s role in Northern’s win this season

Mohammad Huraira, Mubasir Khan and Rohail Nazir are aged 20, 21 and 21, respectively. The young trio’s outstanding performances led Northern to the title win this season. Mohammad Huraira’s 1024 runs from 11 matches included four centuries and two half-centuries. His highest score of 221 off 236 balls in the final against Sindh helped him earn player of the final award. He was also named best batter of the tournament, his second such award in as many seasons.

Mubasir Khan’s all-round performance (522 runs and 31 wickets) helped him take the player of the tournament award while Rohail Nazir’s 43 dismissals behind the stumps earned him best wicket-keeper of the tournament award.

Highest team total this season

Northern also posted the highest team total in this edition of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Their 651 for nine in 197.1 overs came against Central Punjab at the Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad in the fourth round match played from 15 to 18 October. The match was played out a draw as 1,160 runs were scored in the match.

Top performers in the tournament

Three batters managed to score over 800 runs in the tournament which include two Test cricketers Abdullah Shafique and Usman Salahuddin. Huraira’s 1024 runs came at an average of 73.14 whereas right-handed batters Abdullah and Usman scored 867 and 862 runs, respectively. Abdullah’s 232 – also the highest individual score in the tournament – came against Sindh in the first round match at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi from 27 to 30 September.

In the bowling charts, Sindh’s mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed leads the table with 43 scalps from 12 innings, and as a result was adjudged best bowler of the tournament. Northern’s Aamir Jamal and Mubasir Khan hold the second and third spot with 31 wickets apiece. Aamir Jamal’s eight for 120 remained best bowling figures in an innings in this edition of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. He achieved the feat against Balochistan in the drawn seventh round match held at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium from 2 to 5 November.
