NEW DELHI: Norwegian mass murderer Anders Breivik's ringing endorsement of Hindutva and Hindu nationalists has left saffron leaders embarrassed.

Ram Madhav of RSS called it "motivated propaganda", while VHP's Vinod Bansal insisted that his manifesto, in which he has praised Hindu nationalists, "made no sense". However, BJP MP B P Singhal was quoted as saying that the killer's ideas were not wrong but his methods were.

In his over 1,500-page manifesto titled "2083: A European Declaration of Independence", Breivik talks of Hindutva elements as allies and urges them to fight shoulder to shoulder with his knights. His mission: To stem the spread of Islam in Europe. That India occupies a large part of his perverse mindspace is clear from the 100 pages he dedicates to the country. He comes out in support of "sanatana dharma movements and Indian nationalists in general". He provides the BJP, RSS and ABVP websites as references for more information. The Indian government, he claims, should have insisted on a name change of the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan, because they were named after the Hindus who "were massacred" there. Modern India, he says, "white washed this Hindu genocide", which he likens to "Auschwitz".

Breivik quotes an NCERT directive of 1982 (which actually shows India embracing its multicultural identity) to say he is outraged that it stipulates, "characterization of the medieval period as a time of conflict between Hindus and Moslems is forbidden".

Reacting to Breivik's rant, Ram Madhav, senior RSS leader, said: " His entire so-called manifesto quotes conservative writers from both sides of the Atlantic. Ideological similarities have been drawn from all over, so to say suddenly that it is linked to Indian nationalists or Hindutva is simply motivated propaganda."

The VHP's Vinod Bansal said: "Most of what he has to say makes no sense, except the bit about appeasing Muslims is right. Basically, the UPA government under Sonia Gandhi has been indulging in it and also framing policies in such a way that the whole country is converted to Christianity."

Hindus, Breivik says, have been victims of the greatest historical "genocide" by waves of Islamic jihad.

He quotes right-wing historian KS Lal to argue his point. The most important part of this document is his cherry-picking of history and religion to come to some terribly distorted conclusions.

Breivik claims he wrote several emails and also used Facebook to reach out to people in India. It is possible that he sent his manifesto to the addresses he farmed ahead of the massacre.

There are several themes running through Breivik's tortured manifesto. On the one hand, he attacks Islam and the "appeasement" of Muslims by everybody from western countries to countries like India. But on the other, he has a special place for what he calls the Marxist intellectuals, who, he says, dominate western thought and stifle free societies.

an eye opener.

Zionism and Hindutva are both fascist ideologies, two peas in the same pod. Expected.

I read that guy's manifesto and he comes across as an Islamophobe while appearing sympathetic to non muslims. He supports the Tea Party in the US, the BNP in the UK, and RSS/BJP in India. Zionism, Hindutva, Islamist extremism they are all peas of the same pod. We should not be selective in addressing the evils. Religion is not the culprit here, it is the extremist ideology which is the real threat.

Lol just because he praised the Hindutva leaders in his book leads to emergence of Hindu Links with the bombings in Oslo?

The link he talks about is the ideological similarity between those two. Both right wing christian extremists and right wing hindutva extremists are anti muslims.

But to be fair, all kinds of right wing extremist ideologies are similar. Including islamists.

Exactly.

But to me extremism is not dangerous. Its hate for other which makes it dangerous.

Tell me how is it going to impact anyone if someone is extremely relegeous towards Islam or Hindu or Christian or anything else ?

One can be as extreme relegious as one can. No religion asks you to kill people form other religion.

the problem here is, extremism and hatered go side by side.... If you are an extremist, then a just a small spark can cause a great fire and thus develop the hatered. That's why, in papers, these two factors may put aside but in reality, they are interlinked.

He also calls for Buddhists in China to join his cause. If you read the manifesto, he basically reaches out to every single non-Muslim community.

Moreover, he envisions a "servant class" in Europe made up of Hindus and Buddhists. He is just scum.

This Guy made some good observations too .

Extremely religious is not the reason for this. The real reason is intolerance to others.

The people who are doing violence can never be extremely religious. They are kind of redefining the religion to their own agenda and get more support.

No religion asks for harming other religion. So how can being extremely religious prompt me to take that step. Its ones intolerance and insecurity for others that makes one do those things.

i have met few hindus in my life and those who i befriended ... were quite friendly and easy people .

My friend came up with an interesting one over a drink on Monday night. She doesn't distinguish Christian extremism from Muslim extremism from whatever extremism. She considers extremism to be the belief - the religious subtext is simply added afterwards, for justification and suppression of guilt. Not sure I agree but I have been thinking about it...

How the White Nationalists Who Love Trump Found Inspiration in the Group That Gave Us Narendra Modi

QUESTION: WHAT IS the connection between controversial Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi — who is visiting Houston this Sunday for the “Howdy, Modi” summit, as well as a meeting with President Donald Trump — and a spate of white nationalist terrorist attacks across the West?

Answer: Anders Breivik.

You remember Breivik, right? The homicidal Islamophobe who massacred 77 people in Norway in 2011? Brevik, who was sentenced to 21 years in prison, is now viewed as a “saint” by far-right activists. Christopher Hasson, the Coast Guard lieutenant and self-proclaimed white nationalist accused of plotting the assassination of prominent Democrats and journalists, has cited Breivik as an influence. The Christchurch shooter Brenton Tarrant described the Norwegian mass murderer as his “true inspiration” and even suggested that they had been in contact, while the El Paso shooter Patrick Crusius, in turn, expressed support for the “Christchurch shooter and his manifesto,” as did the San Diego synagogue shooter.

But where did Breivik himself draw inspiration from? It probably won’t shock you to hear that he name-checked a range of conservative and far-right commentators from the U.S. and the U.K. in his rambling and racist manifesto. But it might surprise you to discover that this modern icon of white nationalist terrorism also mentioned India, and in particular Hindu nationalism, on a “remarkable 102 pages” of his 1,518-page screed.

BREIVIK CALLS ON his “Hindu Nationalist brothers” to “rise up” against the Muslim conquerors of India, and extols Hindu nationalist groups because “they dominate the streets” and “do not tolerate the current injustice and often riot and attack Muslims when things get out of control.” However, he complains, “this behaviour is nonetheless counterproductive.”

“Instead of attacking the Muslims,” he continues, “they should target the category A and B traitors in India and consolidate military cells and actively seek the overthrow of the cultural Marxist government.”

For Breivik, it is essential that far-right, Islamophobic movements in Europe and India “learn from each other and cooperate as much as possible” because “our goals are more or less identical.” He even provides a list of online resources for his readers — and it includes the website of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh among them.

The RSS is a far-right, male-only paramilitary volunteer organization, founded in India in 1925. Breivik may have been lauding the RSS in 2011; but back in the 1920s and 1930s, the founders of the RSS were heaping praise on Europe’s far-right, totalitarian regimes — from Mussolini’s fascists in Italy to Hitler’s Nazis in Germany.

M.S. Golwalkar, the second leader of the RSS, wrote about how he was inspired by Nazi Germany, which he said displayed “race pride at its highest” and was “a good lesson for use” in India. V.D. Savarkar, who coined the term “Hindutva” to refer to the RSS’s vision of India as a Hindu state, claimed that “Germany had every right to resort to Nazism, and Italy to Fascism.” He even compared India’s Muslims to “Jews in Germany.” A former member of the RSS — and acolyte of Savarkar — would later assassinate Mahatma Gandhi, in protest of the latter’s pro-Muslim views.

SO WHERE DOES Modi fit in here? The Indian prime minister is the leader of the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party, which is accurately described by Breivik in his manifesto as “the political arm of the RSS.” Modi himself began training with the RSS when he was 8 years old; by the age of 22, he was a full-time “pracharak,” or missionary, for the group. As chief minister of the state of Gujarat — the scene of brutal anti-Muslim pogroms in 2002 — Modi oversaw the distribution of high school textbooks that described Hitler as a leader who “lent dignity and prestige to the German government.”

Today, as prime minister, Modi continues to bestow praise on the likes of Golwalkar and Savarkar. He considers the former to be his ideological mentor and “Pujniya Shri Guruji” — a guru worthy of worship — and the latter to be an epitome of “courage, patriotism, and unflinching commitment to a strong India.”

Meanwhile, on Modi’s watch, the secretive RSS has seen a spike in membership — to around 6 million members — and an unprecedented level of political influence in the nation’s capital, despite the fact that a former inspector general of police once described the group as “the country’s No. 1 terror organisation.”

The rise of Modi, the RSS, and Hindu nationalism has led to an explosion of hate crimes in India. “Today, under Modi’s iron-fisted regime, Christians, Dalits, Muslims, Sikhs, and every Hindu who disagrees with the hate, violence, and supremacy of the RSS lives in fear of their lives,” South Asia affairs analyst Pieter Friedrich explained to Houston City Council on Tuesday, as part of a last-ditch attempt by anti-Modi activists to prevent the prime minister’s high-profile summit in the city. Mobs have beaten and murdered Muslims for allegedly slaughtering or even transporting cows; churches have been burned and vandalized.

“Fascism,” as Yale University scholar Jason Stanley told me earlier this year, “always involves something like white nationalism, but it doesn’t need to be white nationalism.” Is it any wonder that the Hindu nationalist from India has formed such a close friendship with the white nationalist in the White House? They have fascism in common. Modi, though, is much more dangerous than Trump — unlike the latter, the former is a true believer, a proud ideologue.

It is therefore difficult to disagree with Friedrich. “Rather than ‘Howdy, Modi,’” he told council members on Tuesday, “the City of Houston ought to be saying, ‘Adios, Modi.’”

He’s likening the ”massacre of Hindus in Afghanistan” to ”Auschwitz” while he gives Nazi salutes in court. Great.

Propaganda pushers like Mehdi R Hasan keep trying to drag other religion and races and link them to terrorism.

LOL ;) ;)

This article suppose to get the members of RSS and supporters of RSS upset.

He just pointed out what both racist and ignorant groups have promoted.

The over exaggeration of the alarmists is laughworthy. RSS and Hindu organizations are mostly toothless and were called coward baniyas by the same people not too long ago. All of a sudden somebody comes along and shows some spine and all Hindus are extremists now. As far as the Hitler worship goes, people need to understand that Hitler was liked because he opposed the British who occupied India. Your enemy's enemy is your friend. That's pretty much it. A few hundred ISIS morons have more weapons than 6 million RSS members. That should tell you how stupid the propaganda is.

Extreme elements have indeed taken over the spineless baniyas of RSS & VHP. But they are no threat to the world. They are only threat to the minorities and helpless weak people who cannot stop eating beef.

Should be no issue to disown this ideology then,

What ideology? The akhand Bharat or beef ban? Both are ridiculous. The nationalism bandwagon I have no issues with. The Valentine's day couple bashing I abhor. Preserving a way of life while adapting to changing generations is an art not many can master. The national pride I can appreciate. RSS is about Hindutva which is the way of life of peoples in this part of the world. It should not be given a religious color. Hindutva in it's true sense doesn't discriminate between religions. As I said RSS is being given way more attention than it deserves. Imagine this. Ayodhya, the perceived birth place of Lord Rama, a godly figure in hindu mythology vs Babri Masjid, a mosque built by Aurangazeb an invader is being fought in the courts as we speak. If RSS has so much pull and if India is awash with Hindu radicals why will it be fought in courts. Imagine a holy Muslim site vs a Hindu temple battle in any Islamic country and guess what would be the result.

Beef is cheap. It helps feed the poor. What happened to beef eaters during congress? I don't know the history of beef in India. Seems such an innocuous thing that rest of the world takes for granted.
