What's new

Pakistan (191/3) comprehensively defeat Netherlands (186) by 7 wickets; Take unassailable 2-0 lead

Usual rubbish start I see then over to Babar.

Can someone put Rizwan out of his misery? 9 from 22 when the other batsman is going at over run a ball.

Rizwan really struggling out there. Odd he has struggled as much as he has when he's been superb in T20's. Just doesn't try to play the same shots or take the risks like he does in T20's.

To do that, he needs to open. Rizwan has a very limited game and mostly relies on boundaries, on the leg side, to score the bulk of his runs. When the field spreads out, which generally happens when he comes out to bat in an ODI, is when he struggles big time.

He has done nothing to deserve a spot in this format. Takes too long to get going which is unacceptable really.
Both him nd imam play similarly in this format we can afford only 1

He basically opened today considering how early he came in.

He also scores quicker in T20 as the match goes on and doesn't score at a crazy rate in the powerplay.

IMO, it's about the mindset and playing attacking cricket instead of defensively like he does in ODI's.

Rizwan saved by umpire's call. Would have been nice if he was put out of his misery.

A disastrous inning to watch.

He needs to go. Stop ruining the careers of players just so this guy can be spoon fed runs

Salman meanwhile has looked better in 2 balls than Rizwan has all innings.

To play in middle order in ODI'S u've to be a wristy player which salman is. Working the balls into the gaps and creating your own angles is how u bat in middle overs.
Also u got to have good footwork.
Rizwan plays with hard hands and always looks stuck at the crease

Early days but Salman looks to play pretty positively and often shuffling around the crease to make things happen.

His list A strike rate is 95

Which is why I had no issue with his selection unlike some people who were losing their minds of his selection after a couple of Test matches.

We saw how useful Hafeez was for this done in the middle and if he can basically be that, it would be a welcome outcome. Might not be as useful with the ball as Hafeez but seems like someone who could bat at a quicker pace though.

Salman looks very watchable. I like his batting stance, it enables him to thrash a poor ball, unlike other batsmen who either block everything or premeditate an aggressive shot.

If Salman can stay not out, he will have a perfect start to his ODI career.

He can then afford a poor innings here and there and make up for it with a good one here and there. That’s how cricket works. He will still have a decent average and a decent strike rate.

Both him and Naseem could not have asked for a better start to their careers

How is a guy who is playing his 2nd ODI out batting a bloke who has played so many ODI’s and has 1000 runs to his name?

Salman looks very good vs spin. Another reason why he may make sense long-term at #4/#5 and the next WC is due in India.

Kamran Ghulam is another very good middle order batsman with solid temprament. Best no. 4 in Pak.

Rizwan not able to succeed in ODIs is because he lacks offside game ...if he wants become a permanent member of ODI squad he must improve his offside game otherwise he will struggle big time against good teams....

If Pakistan is barely scratching past the Dutch with a full strength squad it tells us how big a problem there is mentally.

Even against an associate team that does not play against full members team on a regular basis they can't bat with much intention either.

Rizwan scoring and playing big shots now so Salman can't get to his 50 haha.

Kidding aside, good to see Rizwan turn it up after being horrific early on. Hopefully something for him to build of going forward.

Salman is a solid player of spin and can play some unorthodox shots against as well. If he deliver some impactful performances against better sides can be a useful player.

Wow Salman ending it in a fashion. Brilliant and gets to his fifty.

Great innings and it just shows why he should have been sent in earlier last match.

I dont think a convincing win by 7 wickets and almost 15 overs in hand can be said as scratching past.

In the end, it's a good thing for the team long-term that Fakhar/Imam got out early and middle order got to bat for plenty of time and carry the team through to an easy win.

I hope we get to see Haris and Dahani play in the next match.

Well today atleast they had the sense to promote Salman. He should have come at 4 but atleast it's better than 8.

We lack a middle order and should give the middle order prospects as much time as possible.

Even series against these teams can be meaningful if used for the long term good.

Look at the overall picture, the first game Pak scored just over 300 yet the Dutch got to 298 losing by 15-16 runs.

Even in this game none of your top 4 went at even a 90 SR just Salman came out swinging at went at a 100+ SR.

Babar Azam: It was a good effort by the fast bowlers, they bowled well with the new ball. The spinners bowled well later on, so we were happy. In the morning there was moisture on the pitch, that's why I wanted to bowl first. The wicket was under covers yesterday, anyway credit to the pacers and the spinners. We are trying different combinations, Salman showed his class today. He played very well today, so looking forward to the next game.

Scott Edwards: We knew it was going to be hard at the start. Always hard to come back from that (8/3) situation. I thought 250 would have been enough, but we couldn't get going. I think this wicket works well for finger-spinners. There are a lot of positives to take, hopefully we get a win on Sunday.

Mohammad Nawaz | Player of the Match: It looked like Karachi today. Once they ( the opposition batters) face 90 miles against the pacers, they come after me. Sometimes that's good, sometimes it's not. My focus is to perform as an all-rounder, I try to give my hundred percent. I am there for my team whenever they need me.

Rizwan,Fakhar and Naseem should be rested.Dahani,Abdullah and Haris(WK) should play.Naseem needs more games but he needs a rest to keep him injury free.

Rotterdam, 18 August 2022: A signature Babar Azam innings and sixth career half-century by Mohammad Rizwan lifted Pakistan to third in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League with a comfortable seven wickets victory over the Netherlands on Thursday.

Babar scored a strokeful 65-ball 57, while Rizwan completed 1,000 ODI runs in his 49th match on the way to 69 not out as Pakistan achieved the 187-run target in 33.4 overs. The two reliable and dependable batters had joined the act at the score of 11 for two and added 88 runs for the third wicket.

Babar, who reached his 21st career half-century from 52 balls with six fours, struck seven fours, while Rizwan hit six fours and a six in an 82-ball innings. The wicketkeeper-batter had completed his first half-century in four matches from 72 balls with four fours.

The two had paired together after Fakhar Zaman found a leading edge to be caught by Vivian Kingma off his own bowling. Four balls later, Kingma dismissed Imam-ul-Haq, who was caught by Logan van Beek at point.

While Rizwan was innovative and cheeky, as always, Babar was elegant, graceful and attractive, as ever, hitting almost everything from the sweet-spot of his willow until he perished with a mishit off off-spinner Aryan Dutt. The two batters dominated the proceedings from the very start and immediately shifted the pressure back on the Netherlands who were aiming for more wickets after quickly removing the two openers.

Following Babar’s departure, Salman Ali Agha joined Rizwan and returned unbeaten on 50, his maiden half-century in his second appearance.

Salman showed signs of talent and skills when he played some delightful strokes, including his only six that turned out to be the winning shot that also brought him his 50. He faced 35 balls and hit five fours and two sixes, and added 92 runs for the unbroken fourth wicket.

Earlier, the Netherlands elected to bat first and lost their first three wickets for eight runs and last seven wickets for 178 runs to be bowled out for 186 in 44.1 overs. Haris Rauf and Mohammad Nawaz equally shared six wickets between them conceding 16 and 42 runs, respectively, while Naseem Shah snapped up two for 27.

22-year-old Bas de Leede was the Netherlands’ leading scorer with an impressive 89 (120 balls, 2x4, 3x6) before he fell to Haris, while Tom Cooper followed up his 65 on Tuesday with 66 (74 balls, 7x4, 2x6). The two batters put on 109 runs for the fourth wicket.

The third match of the series will be played on Sunday.

Scores in brief:

Pakistan beat the Netherlands by seven wickets in second ODI

The Netherlands 186 all out, 44.1 overs (Bas de Leede 89, Tom Cooper 66; Haris Rauf 3-16, Mohammad Nawaz 3-42, Naseem Shah 2-27)

Pakistan 191-3, 33.4 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 69 not out, Babar Azam 57, Salman Ali Agha 50 not out; Vivian Kingma 2-32)

Player of the match: Mohammad Nawaz (Pakistan)

In the first game no team would have batted first. Fakhar also mentioned that how there was a lot of moisture and the only reason Babar batted first was to be prepared for situations when wicket is tough. So we have to take into account the context. Irrespective match should have been finished by the bowlers better but, look at the experience of our pacers. Them faltering a bit on occasions isnt end of the world.

Further Eng and SA have both been beaten by Ireland in an ODI (Eng at home) in last couple of years and those teams have had much more experience then the supposedly full strength Pakistan overall. BD recently beater SA in SA and lost to Zim in Zim.

I believe we sometimes are too critical. Yes no doubt its far from a perfect team but, going to be in a decent direction overall so far, few issues aside.

Naseem's performances with the bowling giving me a lot of confidence. Agha is impressive too. I hope for the final game we give rest of the remaining squad a chance as well.

I like Agha, remember how classy he was when he played his first PSL for Qalandars.

Still think he should bat at no4 and Rizwan at no5

but Pak then need to give beast-mode mindset to Khushdil+Shadab+Nawaz. they should almost always be able & looking & and scoring at SR of 150+ . cannot have a below 150SR if we have the top 5 we have

That's why I would want Agha at 5 because I think he can play his shots from ball one whilst Rizwan takes time before he can unleash.
