Good support for Pak

Pakistan getting hammered tbh considering this is Netherlands, this is not good.

Looking like they have a good chance to chase this down.

Pakistan's bowling hasn't been great and the fielding has been subpar with a lot of singles let through.

Pathetic bowling display. Look at the Eco rates of some of the bowlers.

NL has lost wickets but scoring at a good rate.

Seriously pathetic display the bowlers.

Naseem has been brilliant today. Looked like taking a wicket every over.

On a different level to every other bowler today.

Done justice as SSA's replacement

The next ball was even better. The one that somehow got away for 4 was great too.

Lol the Dutch commentator knows every young pakistan quick all the way to Zeeshan Zameer.

Some really poor cricket by Pak here. The fielding is all over the place.

Very low standards and on top of that, they have this sheepish smile when giving extra runs away.

Pakistan has a habit of playing at the level of the opposition. If they play Argentina, these Pakistani players will play at their level and make a match of it.

If only it was in football and not cricket

Dont know bro, but this is a shocking display. Should have scored atleast 350 and now getting smashed while bowling to tailenders.

There is no intensity whatsoever. Speaks volumes about Associate level teams that they can’t compete against this rubbish too.

11 an over required

A poor over of 15-20 and it might just tilt their way

Even If Pakistan win this match, this is just a horrible performance. Much Respect to Netherlands for playing with such fight.

Such sloppy fielding, singles not stopped. Singles turned into doubles. So many run outs that didn't happen. Catches dropped.

Not to mention all the extras they gave up with their bowling. It's why Netherlands is still in this game.

The fact this game is even close as it is right now shows what a poor ODI team we are.

But nothing will change, i mean they are even messing up the basics.

Against NL you get away but the ICC W20 SF is a good example, you play poor you lose.

Just catching up in the U.S. and watched the last hour. Surprisingly close, Netherlands, entertaining. Good to watch this from an emerging team.

Funny that this Edwards batsmen has more shots in his toolbox than any of our batsmen.

48 needed of 24 balls. There are two set batsmen out there again

They had some close matches vs WI too, which is pretty close to where Pakistan are. They are not England/India level.

Pak is playing very poor cricket. This is what you get when players play for stats. Should have scored a minimum of 350.

Also the bowlers, apart from Naseem, club level.

Netherlands for an associate team is pretty good, but Pakistan should be doing better than this.

Netherlands also did give a scare to NZ in their 1st t20 match they played.

They only positive I have from this match for Pakistan is Naseem Shah, I have really enjoyed watching him bowl

Netherlands have 27 extras due to Pakistan bowling and there was a bunch of poor fielding.

Pakistan just taking it too easy and bowling loose in the middle overs didn't help.

Naseem has been the star of the match for me. The positive which we wanted to see out of this series.

Coming to the match, Pak’s fielding other than PP batting was really ordinary. Dropped 3 catches and missed around 3 runouts. Need to do better.

Bowling was okish and poor on occasions but, it was pretty inexperienced so have to give that levy.

Got nothing to do what NL did vs NZ or WI. This is about Pakistan.

Imam pathetic batting display.
Babar should have batted with more intent.
What is Rizwan doing in the team and even batting at 4.

On top of that such a poor fielding display!

Even though it’s just a poor Netherlands side but I am still so happy for Naseem

He was thrown right in the deep end in Test cricket and has taken a lot of battering in his career by the world’s best players. He deserves this success on ODI debut

Really good effort by Netherlands coming this close irrespective of Pak bowling experience.

lol Netherlands giving us a tough match. I think my interest in Pakistan cricket dropped at right time.

Another no ball for Naseem. That's 4 for the day.

Unacceptable in ODI's and it makes Naseem unusable against a top side.

He produced enough wicket taking balls to take 10 wickets today lol.

I agree. We asked way too much from him in tests right away, without easing him in white ball.

Motm for me.

The reason I bring up the other results it to show they are a pretty decent side,
BUT that does not take away the fact that PAK were poor today in all aspects, except for Naseem Shah

PAK 314/6 (50)

NED 298/8 (50) CRR: 5.96

Pakistan won by 16 runs

It's his debut and probably a carry on from tests. Let him play more odis.
Hasan and Wahab before him have done worse than this despite having far more experience.

Ireland beaten Eng in a match in Eng in a 3 match ODI series. BD after a tremendous ODI season has been beaten by Zimbabwe in an ODI series. SA lost an ODI to Ireland and lost ODI series at home to BD.

I believe we Pak fans need to be less fickle and make it a all doom and gloom affair every other series.

It was a poor performance no doubt but, its part and parcel of the game.

Pakistan weren't at their best but credit to Netherlands for playing really well and making it a tough win. They bowled well and pretty tight and batted fairly well too.

Agreed. Pakistan are also simply not an elite team that's going to steam roll through these teams. In the end a win is a win and Pakistan still won despite not playing all that well anyways. Hopefully we'll see them be a bit more dominant in the next match.

Pakistan has been dying for 20 years supposedly.

Reality is Pakistan just plays up or down to their competition. This is nothing new.

Give Netherlands some credit as well.

Pakistan has lost to Ireland in the WC, not made it past the WC round robins, lost tests to Zimbabwe. I could go on.

If your opposition is in the game till the last 5 overs, and they're a considerably inferior team(no offense), then it means either you haven't done well enough.
Maybe we were 30 runs short and let them score 30-40 runs too many.

Naseem Shah, ODI specialist?

I didn't watch the first innings, but just looking at the score of 315 my guess is they played their usual style, slow for 35 overs, then tried to accelerate in the end. I think they're actually pretty happy with a 300 score against a side like Netherlands. This is where Mickey Arthur had set a different tone.

He was amazing today, but no need to pigeon hole him as an odi specialist.

He is statistically our best test bowler in 2022.

Our homegrown fielding coaches are too laid back.

We need a Steve Rixon to wield the danda to keep the boys on their toes in the field.

Babar Azam: I am relieved. Fakhar scored a lovely century. The wicket was double-paced. We should have done better. These are challenging conditions. There was a bit of moisture on the wicket.

Scott Edwards: It hurts. We are getting ourselves into good positions. We dropped 3-4 catches. It was a sort of surface which suits us. We have improved throughout the summer but we let ourselves down today.

Fakhar Zaman: It was my lucky day. The wicket wasn't easy. We could have done better. My elbow is fine despite the wasp sting. We were just surviving but when we realized we had enough wickets, we went for it. I always enjoy batting with Babar.

Yes Pak was really impressive under Rixon. Under Abdul Majid team has been hot and cold, there have been some good series fielding wise but consistency is not there.

Things to improve

- PP batting
- Too many extras given
- Fielding was ordinary
- Rauf and Wasim tried too many half baked short deliveries which went for runs, they need to control them better

Thing to think about
- Is there much assistance for the spinners or need to play an extra seamer?

Another seamer 100% imo.

There wasn't much for spinners here. Add Dahani to this group and Netherlands will have much less breathing space.

We need to be more flexible in these kind of series.

This is so wrong. What are FZ and Babar on about?

Surviving, double paced bla bla.
NL just scored 300 runs!!

Fakhar Zaman:

"After Imam got out, Babar and my plan was to not give away our wickets regardless of what the score is because we felt we that if we stayed on, we could make up for this after 25 overs"

"At no time did we feel that the match had slipped out of our hands but then this is cricket and you cannot relax until the last ball has been bowled"

"We must give credit to the Netherlands side for how well they played but the match was always within our control"

"Naseem Shah is a very talented bowler, and we say this amongst ourselves that if Naseem can take care of himself just like Shaheen Shah Afridi does, he has a good chance of becoming a superstar because of his talent"

"Just like the way he bowled today, we can say that Naseem Shah can become a star for Pakistan in the future"

"Agha Salman is an experienced domestic player who plays alongside us and the way he batted towards the end of the innings, you can judge how good our benchh strength is"

Pakistan really need Shaheen and Hassan fit and firing on all cylinders.
Hassan really??? That fit and Firing Hasan Ali the LOI bowler was just a purple patch which is never coming back, so chill out man, any future he has is in red ball, that too not a long term one with his limitations.

Rotterdam, 16 August 2022: Pakistan joined Afghanistan in third place with 100 points on the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League leaderboard with 16 runs victory over the Netherlands in the first ODI on Tuesday. A couple more wins this week in Rotterdam will lift Pakistan to 120 points and will assure them of a place in next year’s event proper, irrespective of how their remaining two series against New Zealand and Afghanistan pan out.

Opener Fakhar Zaman scored his seventh ODI century in his 60th appearance, first in 10 matches, to lift Pakistan to an imposing 314 for six after a slow and cautious start that saw them reach 100 for one in 23 overs.

Fast bowlers Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Junior then shared seven wickets between them to restrict the hosts for 298-8, despite impressive half-centuries from Vikramjit Singh, Tom Cooper and Scott Edwards.

Singh’s 98-ball 65 included five fours, while Cooper struck six fours and two sixes in a 54-ball 65 as the two batters added 97 runs for the fourth wicket. Singh was lucky to be dropped thrice, including on the very first ball of the Netherlands’ innings as Pakistan’s fielders missed a number of run-out opportunities by failing to hit the stumps.

Edwards showed resistance towards the latter part of the Netherlands’ chase, remaining unbeaten on 71 off 60 balls including six fours and one six with his fighting effort not enough to haul the home side over the line.

Fakhar showed flashes of his brilliance, talent and skills with the willow during a run-a-ball 109 that included 12 scorching fours but only one six. He added 168 runs for the second wicket in an entertaining and exciting second wicket partnership with captain Babar Azam, who was elegant and stylish, as ever, while scoring an 85-ball 74 with six fours and a six.

Following the early departure of Imam-ul-Haq (4), Fakhar and Babar consolidated the innings with watchful batting, before unleashing their wide ranging shots in the second half of the innings as the inexperienced Netherlands bowlers ran for cover.

While Pakistan scored 214 runs in the last 30 overs, including 99 runs in the last 10 overs, only Bas de Leede was able to keep the Pakistan batters in check. He picked up two wickets for 42 runs and though Logan van Beek also scooped two wickets, he went for 89 runs. Vivian Kingma and Tim Pringle also went for over 60 runs each.

Apart from Fakhar and Babar, Shadab Khan joined run-feast when he scored a rapid 28-ball 48 not out with four fours and two sixes. Debutant Salman Ali Agha returned not out on 27 as he added 48 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket in 25 balls with Shadab. Khushdil Shah chipped in with an 18-ball 21.

The second match of the series will be played on Thursday, while the final game of the tour will be on Sunday.

Scores in brief:

Pakistan beat the Netherlands by 16 runs

Pakistan 314-6, 50 overs (Fakhar Zaman 109, Babar Azam 74, Shadab Khan 48 not out, Salman Ali Agha 25 not out, Khushdil Shah 21; Bas de Leeds 2-42, Logan van Beek 2-89)

The Netherlands 298-8 (Scott Edwards 71 not out, Vikramjit Singh 65, Tom Cooper 65; Naseem Shah 3-51, Haris Rauf 3-67)

Player of the match: Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan)

Not too alarmed, Pakistan historically has never dominated minnows. Our performances against Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Bangladesh show it.
