What's new

Pakistan and the most overrated bowling unit

Too many extras today for Pakistan against Kiwis in the 1st ODI game.

Naseem and Rauf are bowling within their auqaat now and that's good to see.

Naseem was bowling too fast and getting injured every now and then while Rauf was getting smashed while bowling high pace.

Both have cut pace and bowling good areas.

Likes of Akif will also learn it maybe the hard way.

Good signs for PAK bowling.

How is 60 for 1 on a helpful pitch good bowling? Naseem has always "looked good", without good figures. That's the story of his entire career

Because you can’t take a bowlers figures in isolation. You have to look at how he troubled the batsmen and created pressure and allowed his bowling partners to maintain pressure. As a unit. I think Akif, mAli, and Naseem were good for their 30 overs. Not world class but good enough.

The days were one bowler rocked up and got through a lineup has long gone. Bowlers have to learn to treat ODIS as shortened tests maintain impeccable control at all times.

I think Pak obviously made a mistake by not having a 5th bowler and Rauf is just awful but it’s the way it goes sometimes. Conditions suggested it was a pure seam surface and chapman was beaten many times. Was tighter than the score suggests.

Bowled well in the powerplay.
As I said, he always "looks good", without doing much in the end. The pitch was tailor made for him and doing much more in first innings.

Yet he took just one wicket and most he did was beat the bat a few times. Which is the story of his career.

When Mamoon bhai created this thread, Pakistan were a good bowling unit which was hyped to be the best bowling unit in the world.

Right now Pakistan is a poor bowling unit so im not sure if bumping this thread is fair now because nobody overrates them anymore and a mediocre bowling performance is now expected. If anything it’s a slightly underrated bowling unit now.

My original point was how he had found a pace range to bowl sustainably

Exactly. You can't look at it in isolation anymore. Even Rauf was good today.

Problem was that Agha and Niazi gave 118 runs In 10 overs.

True. But Rauf bowled well within himself barely went over 140 and maintained good lines. I do prefer that to him spraying it around at 145+ but when you take his speed away you realise he’s just a straight up and down bowler. Pak obviously don’t have seam allrounder and clearly erred by not having a full time spinner. Who makes these decisions??? Jeez salman and Niazi aren’t good enough to bowl more than a couple of overs each.

Nevertheless good to see the main three bowlers putting pressure on. I like Akif and M Ali. I think they will do well. Imagine Wasim Jr will come in at some point.

Think Arafat Minhas can bat at 7 and be that 5th bowler .

Only one of Khushdil, Niazi, or Tayyab should play and that too at #6.

Naseem averages 35 in tests and t20s in his whole career.. For last 2 years in ODIs he averages over 40. These are not "isolation" but pattern in his entire career. His figures always end up being similar every match.

His blowing figures is a feature, not a bug

Well I’m not disagreeing with you. I think he’s bang average and in most other teams he would be the 3rd seamer or 12th man but if those countries are Sena and he’s able to use conditions then his figures might be better if we go by statistics alone. In the first 10-20 matches of Odi or tests figures can often be misleading. There are many examples where a bowler looks either great or awful but the statistics balance out. Mo abbas , amir, Junaid being cases in point.

Naseem had helpful conditions and beat the bat regularly like you say. For now it’s good enough. My main point is Pak really need to work on having a bowling attack as a group that can regularly take 10 wickets or at least restrict for under 250 or there abouts. For this the weakest link isn’t Naseem it’s the lack of a full time spinner or a very good all rounder (spin or seam)

Once they have that then the likes of Naseem can be rotated for somebody like waseem jr or even a returning SSA or some other promising player. So that way you don’t just discard players after a few tepid performance.

Right now I’m seeing Akif and M. Ali as bright spots. Let’s see if they take the new ball next match over Naseem
