Pakistan batsmen resilient on rain-hit Day 4, reach 100/2 at Stumps, still trail by 210 runs

He has already scored centuries 8n Test and ODis. This is a learning tour for him, wherewven England opener are struggling in overcast conditions.

I am talking his mentality, look at Shan and his scores, once he realised he was in for the next 4 or 5 tests.

I know he had shot range limitations but we need players who can score runs. Sami Aslam is capable of getting big 100s. Shan Masood isn't good enough. We have to try someone else. Sami deserves a chance imo.

Good thing is that Sami improved on that and his SR and stroke play in 2019 season was better than his previous self. I feel he will turn out to be good when given a chance this time around, even in 2016 he was technically well equipped to score 50s in both innings of a test in Eng.

I think it is an away tour of New Zealand in December.

Not great. Azhar looks in good form here. His form could drastically change by then. Also Misbah will think with that time gap he can get away with not making many changes .

This sounds very positive. Sami should be in the next test squad in place of Shan or Abid.

59/1 after 34.2 overs.

Run rate is really low but they are hanging in there and that's the main thing.

Yeah he was excellent, but then again most FC batsmen cashed in on those dead pitches and red Kookaburra.

I'd keep Sami in the squad ahead of Imam who should go back to domestics.

Sami needs to stop crouching and stand more upright. He also needs to watch his innings from Edgebaston( where he was excellent) and understand that he has to balance defense and attack. He went more and more into his shell and ended up wrecking his reputation

I hope PCB arranges a tour against a top team.

Would like to see them play a Test series against SA at home... tough ask but who knows they will come to Pakistan.

59 runs off 35 overs is shocking. If we lose wickets without scoring there’s no way we’re going to save this match. With our huge tail these guys need to make hay whilst there’s no swing and pitch is flat.

Let’s hope tomorrow is washed out because the new ball tomorrow is going to be a lot more difficult to face

It's extremely frustrating that these 2 play some good shots straight to the fielder. Should be getting them into the gap.

IPL is on from September till November in UAE so it seems unlikely.

They are playing very slow 10 (69) partnership, they are well set now. They must not lost any more wicket today.

Crawley double century shows he’s worlds apart in talent and skill from this crop of Pakistani players

Shocking rate. Appears the game plan is to block today and hope the rain will do the rest tomorrow

Isnt that what is needed here to save the test. You seemed very confused about what the situation is

the lesser the lead the better, close to 4 session remaining just Tuk tuking will not work they can't rely
too much on weather forecast so they need to close the gap ball is simply not doing anything at all

Oh yeah I forgot about IPL.

Don’t see Pakistan playing Tests till December then. Which is a shame really as Azhar is looking good.

When is the domestic season starting in Pak?

Big mistake in allowing Bess to settle. He is under pressure for his place and hasn't bowled much.

RR is currently 1.68. Phenomenal stuff.

Flat track and not much for the bowler, we could have easily taken the pressure off here...

I haven't heard about the domestic season starting.

No tests for a while is going to affect players like Azhar and our tests specialists.

Current partnership: 13 runs from 13.2 overs.

It reminds me of that Delhi Test between South Africa and India. South Africa scored something like 132 runs in 132 overs.

There is no taking off the pressure by up rating the rate to say 3 runs per over. The key (and only) aim is to get through to stumps with all wickets intact. They have to bat time — that’s what saving the match is about. The weather forecast for tomorrow is atrocious with heavy rain and gales

Have to admire the resilience of the two 30+ batsmen. If they can hang around for a draw, it’ll be an achievement- rain or no rain.

Azhar Ali is definitely not going to be dropped after this series. It's more likely he will retain the captaincy than lose it if I'm honest.

Aren’t we playing anyone in the UAE?

No plans of any matches in UAE in the foreseeable future. But let’s see what happens with the SA Test series that we’re supposed to host early next year. There will be a definite effort to try and make them tour Pakistan.

Also, the one Test against Bangladesh as MMHS pointed out may be held at some point in the next few months.

There is nothing wrong with the run rate for this partnership given the context of the match . Those calling it a shocking rate have no idea about test cricket.

The key here is not to lose wickets and tire the bowlers out. Pakistan being 74-1 is fine . If they were scoring quicker but 120-3 then they would be in a hole.

With the weather being uncertain tomorrow this partnership is just taking the steam out of the attack .

Hopefully that Bangladesh test happens. We need test matches so we can get the right combination and experience for Shaheen and Naseem.

4 for Abid. He has done well so far. Not a big fan of his but credit to this start so far.

It's amazing how some out here want your team to lose because you want a shake-up.

That's good. Should keep all players game ready and be motivation to do well to be in contention for the NZ series.

NZCB have said that the Pakistan series will definitely happen btw.

That’s great! I hope Naseem and Shaheen will have more FC experience before going to New Zealand.

What a horrendous point of view!

You are happy for Pakistan to lose so that a player/coach you dont like will go away.

How do you think the players in that squad feel? Do you think they would like to rollover and play dead?

Not exactly, i definitely wanted us to win but we've lost the series now. My concern is that the leadership is incompetent so we're better off having weaknesses exposed rather than hidden by rain.

If it had rained on thursday groundsman wouldnt have been able to prepare this flat wicket they were going to use the used wicket which would have suited us but thats our luck..

Despite all i think we have been extremely unlucky in this series...when was the last time in three tests we never dropped a single catch...there has been two centuries obviously lot to work on

Wouldn't be shocked if we move to this style of play gong forward. It was Misbahs method during his captaincy.

Different circumstance. Azhar almost matched him in first inning, butnow he is extra defensive for reason. England need only 6 wickets and they won the match, ourtail end batting is non existent.

This was the flattest wicket of English summer. I think if other batsmen have contributed a bit more in the first innings to support Azhar Pak could have been in a much better position.

Junaids must be pulling his hair out that 30 plus players have gotten us off to this start.

Pakistan got unlucky to not win the toss.

Good toss to win for Eng.

England is attacking more getting on top of these two , as they are too defensive.

Pak has to counter attack and hit some boundaries to scatter England’s plans.

England were 100 for 4 i dont think they cruising. Crawley came out with a point to prove and he put the bowlers on the back foot.

England prepared this pitch on purpose.
.u can block on here all day long

Commies mentioned that ground staff didnt have much time to prepare the wicket due to the weather last week.

This is team England at home with their umpires. Things not going well, they want to have the ball changed.

Totally. On a flat wicket if you can bat first and put on a good total then you are always on the front foot. There was no guarantee that Pak would have batted well but, still this one could have been a good toss to win.

One thing that might be an issue here for PAK is the scoring rate - eventually wicket will fell, but at this rate PAK might need 150 overs to cross ENG, which always keeps the risk of losing the game with Poms not coming to bat again - that saves hours. I think, PAK should focus on a bit scoring faster as well, so that the deficit is covered earlier, otherwise I am sure ENG will bounce back with second ball and tmro morning session - it'll be a 10:30 start.

They need make England work for their wickets. It makes no sense to hit 3 boundaries in the guise of positivity and get out. It's a fiat wicket, dead bat everything

Abid should try to play his shots.

Need the deficit to be under 150 before tomorrow.

No- 30+ players have saved the face here. First Yasir & Abbas with ball, then Azhar alone with bat and now these two. Age is definitely a factor - 29 years old Imran Khan was definitely better than 36 years old Imran Khan ..... but before that, most important is to become Imran Khan first, then comes age.

and now sudden reverse, Poms they are the best at this, and never get caught unlike mighty Aussie and saffers,

It's a totally flat pitch, no purchase for the bowlers after the first 20-25 odd overs

Agreed. I do get where Junaids is coming from in terms of age but it is too agenda driven in his posts.

Yep.

I wonder whats happened to ball...our thick batters only need a sight of reverse to lose their head

Fully agree — and 40 Test Championship points to then be shared

Most important is a hard fought Test - points are just a foot note. This is one aspect of Test cricket that I explained Junaids MANY, MANY times regarding 4 day Test - no matter what you do and how much point you assign for a direct win, no team will ever risk to lose a Test trying to force a win unless they have a remote chance or in a hopeless situation.

Make Tests scheduled for 4 Days - game will be even more boring even if you allocate 10000 points for a win & 1 for a draw - 1 is always better than 0 and if teams can figure out that they can block their way to that 1 point - from day 1, the side is little behind, will go for defensive, time wasting game. Make it 3 day game - on paper weaker team will start the toss with 9 batsmen in playing XI.......

I actually think other way - allocate 6 days for Test, scoring rate will improve, game might finish inside 3 days.
